big menu. big portions. not-so-big prices. sounds good right? bernards cafe has been a staple lunch option for many folks working in the area. there aren't too many decently-priced options in the area with menus large enough to appease a variety of palates. from huge sloppy-joe deli sandwiches, to large loaded salads, a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, soups, sides... it's hard not to default to bernards cafe. even though the quality of the ingredients is definitely lacking. make sure to have them read back your order if placing it over the phone- they tend to forget requests like "and a side of bbq sauce" or "with onions" or "extra dressing" or "no cheese". if you're picking up- check your bag before you leave to make sure everything's set. they often fail to provide napkins, utensils, etc. too. order pick-up for lunch is okay- service is typically rushed, no frills. parking can be difficult in the area, so be prepared. delivery was never much of a problem until the last time my coworkers and i placed an order. i spoke to a very nice gentleman over the phone, placed our order, got the total- wonderful. as my company's complex is HUGE, i gave my cell number so that the driver could call when they were close - this way i could start walking down to our visitor center/ front desk to meet them and save them some time. however, this didn't happen- no call from the driver. i received the call from the security desk once the delivery driver arrived and left my desk no more than a minute later to walk down. upon handing over the money, the delivery-woman snapped at me, saying "i was about to leave, i have other things to do, you know?!" and stormed away. she's lucky this took place in the lobby of a corporate office building, and also after she already had our money (including a large, undeserved tip) in hand. ...in case you're interested, that order was missing a requested side of bbq sauce, a side of chips that was supposed to come with a sandwich, and napkins and utensils. i'm sure you can guess why bernards cafe loses a star in my book, as well as loses my business. read more

This is the best café on route 202. The food we had for breakfast was phenomenally affordable and generous. Two people can eat for the price of one brunch down the street. It's a nice ambiance without being loud. The dessert counter is really enticing, and Jenna, our server took great care of us. read more

I'm a little disappointed it took me so long to finally visit the Bernards Cafe. It's a great place. It's like a diner/deli combo type of place that has an incredibly extensive menu. There is seriously a ton to choose from. It's the type of place that's perfect to go to if you have no idea what you want. Everything I saw them bring out looked very good. It's located right in downtown Bernardsville directly across the street from the movie theater. Unfortunately, that does mean there is no parking lot, so you have to get lucky and snag a street spot. My wife and I came here for the first time on New Year's Day and the place was absolutely packed. I was going with lunch and she was going to have breakfast, so we asked for the two separate menus. Like I said before, the menu is very large. They have a ton of apps, salads, all different kinds of sandwiches - wraps, triple deckers, specialty sandwiches, etc. You get the picture - a ton of stuff. I ordered the Cobb Salad and my wife had French Toast with a side of Pork Roll. I'll also say that they have some pretty good coffee, as well. The food came out and it looked absolutely amazing. My salad was huge and the ingredients were incredibly fresh. It was served with a ton of chicken and some really great balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It was a borderline phenomenal salad. I will definitely be ordering it again. My wife said her French Toast was very good. I tried a piece of the pork roll and that tasted great, too. It was cut nice and thin. I was incredibly impressed by the food here. I'm already looking forward to going back and trying something else on the menu. Prices are pretty standard - if anything, I'd say it's a pretty cheap place. The only knock I have against this place is that the service was definitely lacking on our visit. I think the lady we had was a little overwhelmed by the amount of tables she had. Other than that, everything was fine. We will be coming back. read more

Haven't been to the Bernards Cafe in a few years. I ordered the mango salsa salmon with rice pilaf and spinach. It was delicious! The salmon was grilled to perfection and the flavor of the mango salsa was so flavorful. Kudos to the chef! I will be back! read more

Heard about this place from my husbands boss so we took a ride out today. It was pretty busy even though it was later in the afternoon. We were seated quickly & our waitress was friendly and sweet. I had French onion soup (my fave!) and my husband had lobster bisque. It was loaded with chunks of lobster, he really enjoyed it. Next I had the southwest steak salad. It was a huge serving & had to bring it home. The steak was really tender & had great flavor. Husband had a Cuban sandwich which he said was very tasty and despite being tempted by dessert, finished the sandwich instead. Perhaps dessert next time! read more

Being from Bernardsville decided to take my four children here this morning for breakfast. Unfortunately three of my kids have peanut and tree nut allergies. We eat at many restaurants that are always able to accommodate and understand, however we were addressed with such abhorrent and ignorant behavior it was truly surprising . We were told that there was no way of preparing anything that was not cross contaminated. This is very unfortunate. Food allergies are so prevalent today they should be addressed. I would NEVER go to this restaurant if it didn't have great tasting food. They need to be sent a message by its patrons by the reviews reflecting their horrible service. I have been going to the Bernards Cafe for years now and only once out of all the times I've been there and spent money there has the service been good -- and it was just 2 weeks ago. Every single time I go, my server is unpleasant, never checks in beside when taking the order and bringing over the check whenever they decide to mosey on over. Unfortunately, every time I eat there the food is great. That's all well and good, but what the restaurant owners and workers don't understand -- and probably complain about daily but don't do anything to resolve -- is that you need great service to survive and make tips. I imagine the servers, who stand around gossiping to each other when you're waiting for your food to arrive, complain that they don't get tipped well working here. Well, change your attitudes, do your jobs and CHECK IN with your tables! As a former server, this place's service is an absolute disgrace. You're better off ordering take out and suffering the wrath of street parking in Bernardsville. Also, hopefully someone who works there will read this: I have stopped getting your brewed iced tea because EVERY TIME I get it, there's some goop floating in the glass! Driving through this pretty town and needed a quick bite. The café has more of a diner menu, and its very cute. I was seated quickly and ordered a salad "special" with chicken, peaches, oranges, strawberries and pears. Salad was a pile of mixed greens with canned fruit in top and a few fresh sliced strawberries, a good amount of rubbery cold grilled chicken, super sweet dressing that tasted like jam. $12.95. I might have complained if my waitress checked on me even once. Its end of summer so pears and oranges are in season, so I am confused why they used soggy canned fruit in a salad. Looking around I could see that the sandwiches other peopl ehad looked good so maybe I just ordered a bad thing. read more

Came here for a late lunch last week around 3pm with my dad, he got some sort of French dip type sandwich and I got a turkey wrap. The price for the food is pretty good, and the food was good as well. The only that that bothered me was that I have a milk allergy which I informed to my waitress and she said that they would accomidate me but I ended up having an allergic reaction anyways. Also the menu is immense, big menus tend to mean that a lot of their food is premade/frozen. read more

Bernards Cafe has been one of our regular local go to places for family and friends casual get togethers for years. We were planning a Manhattan baby shower for my daughter and after shopping local Manhattan prices I thought I would give Bernards Cafe catering a look. I am so happy that I did in that not only were the prices much more reasonable but I pulled up on Saturday morning, Mike loaded up the back of my SUV, I drove to the city, unloaded luncheon at building door and the Baby shower was perfect! All the local guests were so happy to have a little taste of "home", and the preparation was beautiful. Mike made everything effortless. read more

I am giving this restaurant 5 stars for a combination of great food, atmosphere, and service. My wife and I go here at least once a month for breakfast. They not only have one of the best omelettes I have ever had but they offer a wide range of unusual options from various types of eggs Benedict to breakfast burritos to more unusual things. Unfortunately we got a new waiter so that probably threw the experience off. Nothing like seeing our food under the heat lamps for 5 minutes while the waiter gets cappuccino for another table ( do they have to make their own?) Food came out wrong but was an easy fix. chicken parm comes on top of a box (or 2) of spaghetti... No kidding! It is way too much. I'm not sure what is going on with Bernards Cafe, but quality has slipped some recently. The kids meals are a crap shoot. Their Mac and cheese used to be homemade - tonight it was Kraft. The chicken finger meal had two of the smallest chicken fingers, and would leave any kid older than 3 starving. Hamburgers are still safe, and their regular sandwiches are good. They do tend to forget things or just get things messed up when you do take out, so check your bags carefully. It's priced fairly, provided you get a couple of additional nuggets and homemade mac and cheese. Three stars because of past good experience, but if things don't get better if will drop to 2. read more

Incredibly rude and unhelpful service. I walk in to pick up a doordash order where I am greeted with no help from the multiple employees surrounding me. I go and pick up my order but the worker on the phone loudly yells at me to put it down. She then apologizes to who she was speaking to on the phone and tells them their order will take 30 mins -- not sure why so long when theres only two people in the store, there's only one to go order, and it doesn't take that long to microwave their crappy food. She comes over and asks me the name of my order so I tell her then she rudely dismisses me and points to the sign 3 feet to the right of where my order was (not sure how I was supposed to know there's a correlation when it's posted above another table) that says "Don't take bags". I understand they do not want people stealing their food but what's the point of her just asking what the persons name is if it's posted on the bag anyway? Also why couldn't have one of the other few workers just done the same thing so screaming could have been prevented? I hope to never pick up an order from this place again since they will make your job inconvenient. read more

We really enjoy the hummus appetizer with pita chips and fresh salads with their homemade vinaigrette. The burgers and fries are also a family favorite as well as the wraps and sandwiches. Great any time of day! Delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I personally love the buffalo chicken salad because it is a really generous portion of chicken on top of a great mix of veggies. For breakfast, you cannot go wrong with an omelette or their pancakes! Omelets are fluffy and filled with your choice of veggies or meat. Pancakes are super yummy! Highly recommend! read more

I've been to the Bernards cafe about 7 or 8 times. Their food is always excellent--I think they have some of the best burgers in the area. In general, their food is heavy and flavorful, with a few sophisticated touches to elevate it above average diner food. They also do delivery, which is great! The service can sometimes leave something to be desired though. It's almost never fast. On one visit, my dining companion and I only ate half our meals (burgers and fries that were easily enough for two full meals each) and asked to take home our leftovers. 15 minutes after the food was taken away, they brought us our check... and no leftovers. 25 minutes later, it became clear that they had no intention of bringing our leftovers back. We assumed they threw them out. It was very disappointing that we lost about $10 worth of food for no reason. That said though, it might have just been a miscommunication. I still go to the Bernards Cafe fairly often and enjoy the food, which is worth the mediocre service in my opinion. read more

Went there twice for breakfast got very bad services. The Spanish waitress with glasses always very very rude. Never had smile on her face , never asked how is everything, more coffee or anything else, just put food on your table and leave, before I haven't finished my breakfast still have food in my mouth she put the check on my table and left. The lady next table was in shock when she saw that, she said to me the waitress is very rude , she"ll never go back again. If you wanna a day with good mood do not ever go there. read more
