This was our first time here and we absolutely loved it. If you need a restaurant to try for a special occasion, definitely come visit. The atmosphere here is very cute and their covered (basically indoor) patio has ambient light and does not feel stuffy at all. The menu felt like there were options for everyone, but not overwhelmingly long like it is at some restaurants. Our waiter was very personable and never felt like we were waiting a while for him. Both entrees (lobster lobster and filet mignon) and the appetizer we got (oysters) were amazing and had big portion sizes. The dessert, turtle cheesecake, was a little too sweet. This is a must visit!!!!! I have been wanting to come here forever and tonight my friends and I had a girls night here and everything was excellent; the food, the ambiance, the service, the drinks....all top tier! Firstly, sitting outside was the first great move. The in wall "fake" fireplaces were so cozy and the table decor was simple but charming. The tables were spaced nicely as well. You can see outside as well so you don't feel claustrophobic. Our waiter, Josh, honestly made our visit. He was kind, courteous, and friendly! He described all of meals so well and made excellent recommendations. He made us feel like we were VIP! We all talked and believe he may be the best waiter we have ever had! Thank you Josh! The food, ahhhhh the food. We started with bread service, a must. The butter and bread were both soft and delectable. We got a goat cheese tart that was melt in your mouth and had excellent flavors. I ordered the duck breast with cabbage, polenta and figs and it was cooked to perfection!! Lastly, I finished it off with the chocolate mousse cake by Josh's recommendation....i will have dreams of this cake. Just get it! My drink, the house cab, paired perfectly with everything. My girlfriends orders scallops and shrimp and their plates were cleared and they both said that meal couldn't be topped. The ambiance of Bernardin's is very cute! The covered patio is adorable and nicely decorated. We got the fried calamari appetizer. It was fine but lacking some seasoning. I found the accompanying spicy mustard to be really pungent not my favorite. For entrees, we got the duck breast and ribeye. Once again everything was cooked greatly but needed salt/pepper. I used to visit the spot when it operated as The Zevely House many years ago. Bernardin's had escalated the vibe and blown the menu off the charts! I love a one-sided menu because that means the kitchen can focus on perfecting a shorter list of options. The menu carries anything you'd need for a great dinner - light to heavy. Hubby got us 7:45 reservations for New Years Eve the weekend prior. We were so lucky to get that! We arrived 15min early, hoping we could be seated early. We're were blessed to be taken to the outside glass building that's beautifully decorated. There was a lovely couple seated next to us that chatted with us about the restaurant, the food items, and the waiter. Blessing #2 was being sat at Josh's table!! We will want no other waiter at future visits!! He is 10/10 for service, personality, suggestions, etc. My friendly neighbors raved about the black-eye pea soup, so I started with that and hubby started with the rolls and garlic butter. MY, MY, MY!!!! I can normally eat and recreate foods at home. THIS SOUP was so fantastic I wouldn't know where to start!! I don't even eat bean soups, and hubby doesn't eat beans. He ate the andouille sausage that was in this soup! The crispy collards on top- perfection!! The garlic butter for the rolls has the perfect hint of butter so you're not warding off vampires later. It was a tough choice for my main entree - black pepper shrimp or salmon or ribeye.....so many choices. I went with the ribeye. Great choice!! I did change the accompaniment to potato cake, spinach, and Brussels instead of portobello. That potato cake was the right amount of crispness and flavor I could've ordered three more!! Hubby's filet and double potato sides were outstanding as well. I didn't want dessert because I ordered another bowl of soup to go (YES - it was that good); wanted it for my New Years meal. We did order the cinnamon roll bread pudding... I figured I'd have a taste and that's it - I'm good. NOPE!! We split it and I definitely ate my full half with the ice cream!!! Just added this place to our go-to date night restaurant list! The food was delicious, service was good and the house-turned-restaurant aesthetic was a cute vibe. The food! The complimentary bread rolls were served with what tasted like light airy herb-y butter perfection. We received and ate several baskets. The calamari was the perfect texture and the batter was one of the best cornmeal seafood breadings I've ever tasted. It was served with a Thai green chili sauce and a mustard sauce which had a bit of horseradish, which we enjoyed. (I would've ordered another helping of this to-go if we didn't have after dinner plans!) My main dish was the Lobster Lobster special which is a 6oz tail served on top of house made lobster ravioli. This dish did not disappoint! The sauce was creamy, buttery, and included sundried tomatoes and properly cooked asparagus and shrimp. My husband enjoyed his 16oz ribeye, which was properly cooked medium rare, and served over a potato cake. Bernardin's is a restaurant steeped in rich history. According to our excellent server, Josh, it was the first structure built in Old Salem, and it was moved to its current location. Sadly, we didn't get to eat inside the original structure, but we weren't upset once we saw the patio. The added patio seating had some great ambiance and was just the right temperature on a cool February evening. To begin, the table shared a few appetizers. We ordered the escargot, brussel sprouts, and tuna tuna. My boyfriend also ordered a cup of clam chowder, which he said was delicious. The escargot had an incredible sauce that was super dippable with the bread that was provided for the table. I'm always a huge fan of brussel sprouts, and these were no different. They were perfectly roasted and seasoned well with the soy bourbon molasse. The tuna tuna  was probably my least favorite of the three. Although the tuna was cooked perfectly, it wasn't very interesting to me from a flavor perspective. For my entree, I had the pan seared grouper special. I was a big fan of the purple carrot puree, and the acidity of the Mediterranean vegetable salad added a nice depth of flavor to the dish. However, I enjoyed the other dishes that some of my friends ordered much more. In particular, the sea scallops were divine! They were cooked perfectly, and the risotto was so creamy and comforting. The emu also deserves an honorable mention for being the most interesting item on the menu, and it tasted great to boot! We also shared some desserts at the end of our meal. Our spread included bread pudding, peach and blueberry cobbler, and strawberry shortcake. I wasn't a huge fan of the shortcake because it had the texture of a biscuit and was very dense. When I think shortcake, I envision a light, airy dessert, and this was not that. Of the three, the  bread pudding was my favorite, which could be because the cobbler burnt my tongue.  Overall, we had a lovely evening with excellent company and service. Although a couple of the dishes were a little underwhelming, I think I now know better what to order next time! read more

We had a gift card to use for Bernardins and we always go out with a group of friends on Christmas Eve Eve so it was a no brainer we ended up here. We were pleasantly surprised at how good our dinner was. By photos online the entrees looked small so we were afraid we would leave hungry but the portions were a great size and everything was delicious! My husband said his ribeye was the best he's had at a restaurant and that's saying a lot. I got the lobster special and I'd order it again and again. It was our servers birthday so we had a good time bantering back and forth with her while ordering our drinks, apps, entrees, and dessert. Over all she was really funny and also a great waitress. Was looking for a fine dining experience and that is definitely what I got from this establishment! From the ambiance to the service all the way down to the food everything was great. They have a great drink menu for those who like wine and they offer your standard bar drinks as well. I started off with the clam chowder which was probably some of the best I've ever had. The flavor was spectacular and the consistency was there as well, you can tell a lot of time was took to make it. As far as the entree I decided to go with the duck I must say I have never had duck that was my first time trying it. It was cooked to perfection and had a good char on it but I will say it's definitely an acquired taste pretty gamey to say the least but it was good I was just in a daring mood! Excellent food, great service and wonderful ambiance! We were in one of the cozy front rooms as a group of 8 and we loved it. We had many appetizers including the delicious calamari. Ok. We were in town visiting family and we had dinner reservations for 7:00 for 6 of us. The restaurant sits in an old house in what I was told was once "the place to live" in W/S. We were seated out on their enclosed patio First impressions often live up to reality. Our table was on a slant due to the way the concrete sat ...a little unusual for an upscale restaurant. The overall take was this was a business that might be struggling. Our waitress was lovely. We all ordered and I believe most were a bit disappointed with their meals. I ordered the Ahi Tuna over pickled cabbage. It was sprinkled with a very weak wasabi aoli mayonnaise. Strange. I'm more accustomed to real wasabi paste. Our NC friends recommended and joined us for dinner here just before gears & guitars event in downtown Winston-Salem! We were seated outdoor in this nicely appointed converted dining area with white table clothes and napkins portray fine fining in this part of town. Place was well ventilated with fans and high ceiling and glass doors were open so while it was somewhat a sweltering day, this place was comfortable and pleasant! Waiter was friendly, exuded confidence in his job, and narrated the two specials entrees of the day: chilean sea bass as sort of a topper in array of salad style vegetable and lobster with ravioli with truffle oil. We ordered two of each mimicking each couple's order. Hubby also ordered a Cab Sav from a collection of their Sonoma County, I had the veuve de varné (sic) brut split which was refreshing! My friend Laura ordered her usual vodka & water as did her hubby Austin! Both chilean sea bass and lobster were very good, a 5! However, both the appetizers Escargots and Foie Gras were disappointing! For the two appetizers I would give 1 star. First off, the snails were served not on shell but rather, the plate presented 5 unappealing snails over a few pieces of vegetables-did not look edible and proved it so. The foie gras was just as disappointing. It is a shame because the rest of the menu especially the entrees look very good. If this was an attempt to provide some français experience, it failed miserably! If I may, i'd recommend they revisit or tweak or just take them off (the escargot and foie gras off) their menu as they put a bad name to their otherwise very good selection of entrees... We also ordered desserts, I had the raspberry cheesecake and it was decadent but in a good way, and most important that it tasted fresh, 5 stars! The cinnamon bread pudding was okay, 3.5! Upscale restaurant in what seems like a restored old house, I've driven by this place many times not realizing what it was. Not until my husband booked this place for my birthday dinner celebration with friends did I get to experience Bernardin's. We came in with a party of 9 including 2 young kids. Immediately we noticed a beautifully relaxing ambiance of the place as we walked by the outside dining area, draped in overgrowth. It piqued our curiosity for the experience we were going to have. When called, we were taken upstairs to a long table by the windows. The ambiance is lovely. It was dimly lit with warm lighting, dark stained wooded interior with modern deco as well as pieces of art that were hung all around. Each for sale! I had myself a lobster, the season's soup of the day and for the table, escargot, calamari and seared tuna. For many of us, it was our first time having snails, but all of us were in consensus that it was delicious. It takes the flavor of the ingredients you throw with it, so I feel like this was a great place to experience this first. Overall, we enjoyed really enjoyed our food and the variety of options it offered in this small corner of Winston. Friends got to try new things, particularly emu which was unusual but fun! Our waitress didn't quite vibe with some of our company which made it a little awkward at times but she was accommodating to my kids which I appreciated. In a downtown full of casual restaurants, I can't help but wonder...how good can a fine dining experience be in Winston-Salem? I finally convinced Mr. Big to take me out for a romantic dinner on the town. You'd think I was trying to convince him to give me a key to his penthouse! All in good time. Bernardin's set the perfect scene for me to finally pop the question I've been wondering for months, "what are we?" Nestled in a historic home, the atmosphere at Bernardin's was stunning & cozy. We sat out in a newer building that felt like a renovated greenhouse - complete with a fireplace. Our server was extremely knowledgeable on the menu and seemed to really have a passion for food. His kindness was both inspiring and very welcomed. We started with the Escargot, which was delicately rich and flavorful. Big refused to try it because "snails, kid." Boy did he miss out. For our entrees, I ordered the Lobster Lobster. The dish so nice they named it twice. Following suit to the Escargot, the flavors were so well balanced and rich without feeling heavy. Each ravioli was stuffed to the gills with bright red lobster. Despite not wanting to try the escargot, Big ordered an equally exotic menu item - NC Emu. Unlike him, I proved to be adventurous and I'm so glad I did. It somewhat reminded me of my favorite NYC staple - Duck but with a slightly deeper flavor. Between the food, service, and atmosphere Bernardin's is a perfect romantic spot for a fancy night out with someone you love. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. What a pleasant surprise! Parking was a little tricky and finding the entrance was an adventure at night, but once we found our way it was smooth sailing. Alek was our server and he was absolutely 100% amazing. Dude was sharp as a tack, he took our complete order-- drinks, apps, entrees, didn't write down anything, went to another table and spoke to them for a few minutes and took THEIR ORDER and then I guess rang it all in. Everything came out perfectly timed and wonderfully delicious. My wife and I both ordered the specials. She got the lobster 2 times and I got the swordfish. Both were splendid. For an appetizer I ordered the jalapeño mussels. OMG y'all let me tell you they were to die for! The broth the mussels came in was so good I would snort it up my nose! My old fashioned was made with love and the Sauvignon Blanc went perfect with the fish. Went to Bernardin's for our anniversary. Had never been there before or even had heard of it. Found on a yelp search. Was an absolutely amazing place. One of the coolest restaurants I've ever eaten. It didn't even feel like a restaurant. The bar is the living room of the house. So cool to have a drink there. Seating area felt like having dinner out in the garden of an old estate. My wife and I spent a good portion of our time talking about of how neat the place was. The wine, meal, service, ambiance all were incredibly perfect. I had the she crab soup and Mahi. She had a salad with golden beets and the rib eye. All of the food was fresh, perfect cooked and prepared well. The wine was fantastic paired with our meals and desert was wonderful. We are locals who returned to Bernardin's for our wedding anniversary and were very disappointed. Our "fine dining" experience began by being seated outside next to a boisterous group of 12, who were literally shouting from both ends of their table. My wife ordered the charred salmon, which was good. I ordered the scallops, which were awful. Tiny, rubbery (likely frozen), gritty, and hard to stomach. Not at all what you should expect for over $36! More like frozen from Food Lion. To be honest, I should have sent them right back and changed the order. Dessert (cobbler) was underwhelming. And never was there any mention of our anniversary, despite it being noted when we made the reservation. We won't be returning in the future. Was happy they don't make you work with the shelll !!!i In a lovely garlic, tomato and cognac sauce this dish was super buttery with some chanterelle and shiitake mushrooms served with bread . Quite the decadent start. My friend had their seared ahi tuna for her entree and that looked and tasted amazing . The tuna was literally a steak and perfectly rare. With soba noodles this was a light but still plentiful dish. That tuna was wow. My seared scallops were also awesome. On a bed of risotto with asparagus, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and a chipotle plum sauce . The buttery scallops were again cooked nicely and so light . So good. Our chocolate mousse cake was a medley of richness and heaven in a cake !! With vanilla ice cream and strawberry sauce . Intense and a true chocolate lovers dream. Delicious and a must . Still a 5! This is certainly a "special occasion" place for us as it's always $100- $200 for the two of us. I wanted to try a new dish, but I just can't not order the filet! It is the best! This time the filet was served with most delicious pillowy gnocchi that paired perfectly with sautéd spinach, and a horseradish sauce. Soooooo amazing. I did ask for more horseradish sauce though, because I wanted it with every bite! We were seated in the outside patio/sun room area this time. It is heated & still cozy. Learned about the history of the restaurant & decided to come here for the first time. I was one of the two customers dining in at the time. I was placed in a small, secluded room, which I felt took away from my experience because I felt isolated. I politely requested another table & accommodations were made. My waitress, Felicia, was very pleasant & attentive. There was a smell in the air that reminded me of mildew or something. It smelled like eggs or a perm or something. I got over that. I started out with calamari & a glass of Malbec. The calamari was okay. I then ordered the filet mignon, which was amazing! I'd return for that. I finished with the blueberry peach cobbler & it wasn't what i was expecting. The fruit tasted fresh, which is good. However, it didn't have much flavor.
