They did a great job replacing the water heater. They were prompt, professional and went above and beyond for the installation. They are not pushy or trying to upsell at all. Our 7 unit residential condo complex decided to replace our 17 year old hot water heaters all at once. After some research on my own and then with a recommendation from our management firm, we chose Bernie's. I coordinated their inspection visits & custom installations. They ordered the appropriate heaters for each unit and stored them in an empty spare room in our basement until 2-3 owners at a time could schedule an installation on the same day. We did this over the summer when many of us are absent but Bernie's made it all work for us. One HWH was damaged during either shipment or installation; the owner asked Bernie's about it. They offered to replace it or give a $200 credit. We determined that the damage was cosmetic so they took the credit, which seemed very fair to us. The Rheem HWH's seemed a bit more expensive than I'd expected but we felt that Bernie's would do a good job & they did. They also gave us a $100 discount for the bulk order. I've moved six times in the last five years, I own property across the country, I've lived in more than 15 different apartments, houses, duplexes and condos in my lifetime and have worked with an array of plumbers all over the U.S. (and overseas.) I've never had an experience quite like this one. The plumber who came to "fix" the porcelain tub in the house that I rent contributed to more problems in and around the bathroom than there were to begin with. He visited the house twice (because one just ain't enough) and both visits resulted in verbal altercations which led to the plumber literally walking out on the job. I called the company because I felt like there was some kind of misunderstanding. I had no idea what I'd done to perturb this man, and I couldn't understand why in the end, nothing was fixed. Every other plumber I've worked with has been pleasant, courteous and willing to explain the technical issues to a non-plumbing enthusiast like myself. The owner of the company then proceeded to talk down to me for a good 10 minutes, making me feel like my experience was completely my own fault (it takes two to tango.) Furthermore, I was stunned when the plumber who visited my house told his owner that I'd used profanity while he was working on the tub. This was very much a bold-faced lie. I'm no saint, but I know when it is or isn't appropriate to swear in front of someone. At the end of the day, my landlord can choose who she wants to hire for certain projects around the home, but if it were up to me, I would look elsewhere for plumbing services. read more

We have a condo in Boulder that had a bathroom leak. We called Bernie's plumbing whose plumber spent a few minutes and decided that the leak was due to unsealed shower tile. In 2 days the leak was much worse. They sent a different plumber who saw that the leak was actually inside the wall of an upstairs bath and was leaking into the downstairs bath. The drywall was replaced after the first plumber, but now is completely ruined. Bernie's will not stand behind their first screw up. The manager said that "we can't always diagnose the problem." Then why call a plumber??? Their screw up will end up costing us about $600. A mistake is understandable. Not owning up to it is not. PS. they did deduct the cost of the first trip - $155 from their over $300 new bill! Big deal. read more

In summary, when Bernie's messes up their work - THEY WILL TRY TO DOUBLE CHARGE YOU to fix it. Very frustrating. They inexplicably replaced a water heater and installed the new one unnecessarily far away. When asked to move it as close to the original location as possible, Mike first tried to intentionally mislead me and say it was per the request of someone else. After wasting time getting him to back peddle and admit that wasn't the case he explained that it would take time to move it, so it would be another $500 (installation cost again). It was very clear that he understood if was their mistake and it was pretty shady to act like he isn't aware that companies typically stand by or correct their work. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OF MONEY WITH THIS COMPANY. read more

This is a great company. I've called them for two household emergencies... my refrigerator/freezer going out and my heater breaking down on a very cold January day last winter. They provided good old fashioned customer service at a very fair price. They were personable, skilled, timely, efficient. With the heater, they looked for ways to keep the price as low as they could, knowing that the sudden $500+ expense was a heart-breaker for me. They didn't even hand me a bill when they left... they mailed it and allowed me to pay over time. How great is that?! Bernie's technician was capable, efficient, and tidy. I was pleased with his diagnosis and work. He replaced a Honeywell motorized valve control and a small transformer. I've used them for boiler installs, boiler repairs and minor plumbing fixes. They worked with me for over a year to get my new boiler installed and repaired at no additional cost. Bernie's was efficient and professional. They tried to fix the faucet to save us some money and apologized when it had to be replaced. Upon a recommendation I called up Bernie's to install a new garbage disposal, a new kitchen faucet, and fix a leak in my shower. They promptly sent a plumber out and he gave me a quote for over $600. Since I needed to get the job done I went with it. I kept track of the time and I ended up paying about $375 per hour for labor which is of course ridiculous. Then to boot the plumber fixed the leak in my shower and when I got into take a shower both hot and cold water turned on to the right which you never see. He came back out and made it right but I was disappointed and felt gouged by the price. read more

I needed to replace our hot water heater quickly and called them at 8 am on a Friday morning and I had a new one installed by the afternoon. They gave a installation time between 1:30 and 2 pm and they called at 1:00 to say they would be there closer to 2 pm - amazing! Their prices are reasonably and they use good reliable products. I was extremely dis-satisfied with this service and feel taken advantage if and ripped off. I called and asked him to come out - he apparently owns or bought an old business called Redworks and also owns Bernies Plumbing - so beware of either business. I wanted him to look at it and give me a quote while I was at work and my mother in law was at home with a check ready in case I approved. He did not call back with a quote andb started the work and way over charged for the job. I called him and 1st he said ti was too hard to esitmate - this was a simple job and above ground so he could see the problem - so that was no excuse. My poor mother in law did not know what to do and paid the outrageous fee for the job I estimate should have beed around $200 was $350 -I will never ever hire this person and I feel he definitely ripped us off. Very unethical. If I could give them less than one star, I would. I may also report them to the BBB. They said they'd come out at no charge to diagnose my water heater and tell me if I needed a new one. While they were at my house, they suggested turning up the hot water heater to see if that solved the problem. The technician wiped out the area around the knob so he could turn it up. I then received a bill for $155! They described that action (turning up the knob) as "diagnostics." I spoke to them about how ridiculous the charge was and they wouldn't budge. I truly feel like I was defrauded and will never do business with this company again. read more

I very strongly recommend not hiring plumbers from Bernie's. I used Bernie's in the past and like to support local businesses. The short version: They did a poor installation on a water pump in my upstairs bathroom, causing thousands of dollars of damage to my home. The restoration is not yet complete, two months in. Their insurance coverage is cash value only (not replacement) so they offered me $1400 for over $6000 in damage. One of the owners, Michael, treated me as I were at fault and was rude and unprofessional to me throughout the ordeal. He acted like he didn't get messages from me and didn't know who I was. He never apologized and never identified himself as an owner even though I had asked to speak to the owner/manager and have them come out to my home. In fact, the plumber who did the installation (a much nicer, friendlier individual than his partner) is also an owner. Bernie's has no after hours service so you're on your own if they mess up. The capper? They sent me a bill for $1475, the cost of the pump and installation. Poor work, awful customer service, unethical and unprofessional followup and they're under-insured (and don't care that they're under-insured). Hire at your own risk. read more
