Once again, I don't intend on posting any negative reviews, but when things are out of hand, I have to ensure we are informed and on the same page. I love donairs and there is a standard for which they must be held to because there are so many donair restaurants with so much history here in Edmonton. When a shop asks me if i want the regular toppings: lettuce, tomatoes, onions plus donair sauce, I expect thats what will be inside... when I kept biting into a tough chewy piece of vegetable, I pulled it out, and realized that, in fact, it was a huge piece of CABBAGE! In fact instead of lettuce, the greenish vegetable this shop is using is large cut chunks of CABBAGE... not lettuce. I need not say more, but I should have known when the person put shredded sprinkles of cheese on top of watery gravy on what was supposed to be poutine... I couldn't see what he was doing behind the counter with the donairs, but had I seen, I would have questioned him right there... I like cabbage, but normally when it has been diced and seasoned as a coleslaw or salad type of thing. And if a restaurant asks me and confirms what their normal toppings are, I expect that is what I would get... this is extremely disappointing and verging on insulting. Listen, if you are trying to sell a product (especially a culturally/regionally significant one), expect that you will be held to the standards. Don't lie to or swindle your customers, and learn from those who have done it well (there are plenty of them in these parts https://edmontonjournal.com/life/food/donairs-explained-how-humble-street-food-conquered-edmonton) I hope this lands as constructive, because we all deserve a chance to learn and grow. Update review and this place is still just as delicious as it was a few years ago :) The owner is pretty friendly and he sure knows how to make a mean donair I ordered a jumbo donair during lunch time to share and look how much meat is packed in there. Not only that it was fresh, it was filled with a layer of lettuce, onions and tomatoes. Also make sure that you get the sweet sauce, it totally completes the flavour. I'm really interested in trying their burger next time it claims that it's one of the best .. time to end the debate haha has anyone tried it? Let me know what you think read more

Best Donair on Stony and 149st came recommended by a friend. While it was not the "best" it was quite adequate. Lots of meat, decent veggies and a small squirt of sweet sauce. Overall taste was not bad, a little dry and could use a touch of more sauce. Fries were standard fare and nothing crazy, missed opportunity by not getting some of that sweet sauce on them. Atmosphere had a 70s feel with dull orange wooden seats. Meanwhile the service was this place was deadly slow. Having one person working was not a good move for a lunch rush. I was surprised there was no entry for this restaurant on yelp. My roommate and I drove out of our way to visit this little unassuming restaurant, because a friend told me I would find the best shawarma in town. I tend to avoid restaurants that claim they are the best after being duped in the past. I'm pretty sure I gave my friend the *seriously...* look when he recommended this place. I ordered the chicken shawarma and a regular falafel. The falafel was $4.50. Wow. O_O The chicken shawarma was tasty with moist pieces of chicken and a balanced sauce, but unfortunately could not top by "best shawarma" contender (Sunbake Pita). I would have liked it better if had some picked veggies and a more garlicky sauce. HOWEVER, their falafel has taken the "best falafel" spot in my heart... and stomach. Their falafel balls have a delicious crunch and flavour to them. They are so tasty I wouldn't be surprised if there was pure lard added. Best Donair is a typical hole in the wall type place. The Donair shop looks like it was setup after another food establishment vacated, and in it's place Best Donair came in and are only using part of the original setup and didn't have the budget to renovate. Walk into the place and there are 5-6 tables, with the grill and order counter along the side. The times I was there, there was only the cook. So you order and once the cook gets to your order, then when it's done, he calls you up, you pay and you walk back to your table with the food. It's dead simple ! The Cook (who I assume is the owner), is very friendly and even though he is busy cooking, makes sure that he gets your order. First time into Best Donair, we ordered, what else. Donairs. The meat was nicely spiced, the lettuce was nice and crisp, the sauce was good. Ordered fries with that, and the fries are spread out on the tray, no holder, very simple. The place is nothing to look and the prices for the meal are hard to beat. Overall, I like this place, it's easy and simple. Food is good, fresh and hot. Value for the meal is hard to beat, 2 donairs, fries and a drink ($12), hard to go wrong. I like it, and this is going to be my go to donair place. read more

Best Donair is really the best donair in Edmonton. I love their burgers too. These guys work very hard to keep the customers happy. Many regulars can attest to their consistency. They have great unique middle eastern yogurt drinks too. read more

Not sure why I bother going anywhere else to be honest as this is the place I always compare donairs too. I agree with an earlier reviewer about opening times as even I was there around 11 the other day and it was closed. I really enjoy the little samurai behind the counter as hes friendly and generous. They have your beef donair, chicken donair, burgers and fries and such. A surprising amount of people order burgers whenever I am there by the way! The beef donair is a nice blend of spice and texture but I usually have the chicken donair. Great garlic tzatziki sauce, usually fresh veggies (ask for more and bam! More will be added happily!) Fair and honest prices considering the portions as well. It a steady pace of business there which says a lot in my opinion. Simply good ingredients and a keep it simple attitude make this quick stop delicious food choice a solid pick! Now get out there and make a mess! ps. it's bring your own bib ;) read more

Meh! I expect a lot better donairs from a place that is named Best Donair. The donairs weren't bad at all, they were pretty tasty. I won't lie I let myself be fooled by the name and was expecting something mind blowing. One thing I did like is that they PACK their donairs with meat. I have only seen a few places do this, the rest usually hold out. You get a bang for your buck here and it's worth it. I would go back for sure. read more

This is a hidden gem. Located in a area that is sketchy at times but don't let that shy you away. The staff are great. Always friendly quick service. Clean restaurant , tv (last time they had lumber jack competitions playing lol). The food is good and the prices are great. May not be the "best" in town but they are good! Being from Ontario I love a good Shawarma! Which is a difficult task in a city riddled with Donair! This shop is very close to my work and I sometimes treat myself to a less than healthy lunch from here! It gets very busy here during the lunch hour so be prepared to wait. The guy working behind the counter is the only one there, and he works hard! There has never been a day I haven't seen him... He remembers what you usually have and how you like your donair or shawarma prepared. Which is huge in my books! He even noticed when I changed my hair! Lol... While I have only ever had a donair or shawarma from this shop I can attest to both being above average. It's not my favourite donair shop but it is my favourite place to go for a shawarma. The chicken is cooked perfectly with that tiny bit of crunchy skin for texture. The garlic sauce is amazing!! Make sure you have breath mints!! One of the things I like best about the food is the couple of onion rings thrown in with the fries :-) such a nice touch! Service, like I said is slow! In my opinion it's friendly and efficient, he moves quickly only stopping to take payment or the best order. But it's a one man show and well worth the wait. It's relatively clean and never have I seen the tables dirty or strewn with trays and garbage. I only give it 3 stars because it is not a restaurant of high caliber. Best Donair really does have good donairs. I wouldn't day BEST but pretty darn good. The first time I ate here, the man behind the counter talked on his cell phone the entire I was in there! Even while he made my food! Despite this annoyance, I returned to Best Donair because the donair I had was delicious. My second experience was much better - no cell phone. And both times I ate there, the amount of meat in my donair was monumental! I have to admit, as an avid donair eater, I was completely shocked at the amount of meat they gave me (but perhaps that is where the name Best Donair derives from). They also have ice cream for a sweet treat after your meal - if there's room! read more

I love these guys, they are some of the friendliest donair guys around. (Probably because they only open until 12AM and don't see too many people stumble out of bars.) It is not something to be proud of to call yourself a donair connoisseur, so I won't do that. I would say there donairs are on the side of very good and above average. If you like your donair a certain way, they can do it. If you want burgers, they can do that too. I don't usually make a mess when I get a donair but the way they throw french fries on a piece of paper and tray makes you think that they expect you to. The restaurant was once a Blimpie's and has changed hands several times through the years and it is pretty interesting to see artifacts from the past poking through - I don't think this place is called Chef Donair anymore. It could use a good wipe down but otherwise, when I get a craving for a donair, Best Donair is near the top of the list. read more

Great food, but the service was terrible. Only one person was working the counter when I went and they overcharged me while also not putting enough meat and sauce on my chicken shawarma. Additionally, I had to wait 20 minutes for service when there were only two customers ahead of me. The ingredients and the taste of the food are excellent, but the service needs some upgrading. Just stopped in for lunch with my co-worker and had Best Donair's falafel combo... so good! The service was quick and the food delicious. Loved that you actually got to see him make the falafel instead of just throwing a frozen, pre-made one into the fryer. Some of the other reviewers are out to lunch: this place does not pack their donairs with meat. If anything, their donairs are on the small side. An average man with an average appetite would have to order a super-sized donair to be satisfied. That means their donairs are not big. Not only that, they're not even of average size. The donairs here are awesome. Unfortunately the posted hours on the door are only a suggestion for the guy who works the weekday early shift. It says "open at 10:30am" but it is never open before 11:15am. Often we show up for lunch, stand outside at 11 waiting for him to open the doors. He usually ignores us and we end up somewhere else.
