My bank recently moved into this complex so I had an opportunity to try this place I had driven by often. I asked for a falafel wrap. And for the most part I was a little disappointed. Now I have a rosey memory of the falafel wraps I had back in the day at cedars deli at the u of c. But even factoring that in, it was not great. Not horrid just a solid 3 stars worth. Now I did not see this on the menu, so they make it often. Next time I have to get laundry change, I will try a donair and maybe update the review if that's a stronger showing. read more

So, it was Boxing Day and I was begrudgingly driving to work around lunch time. I figured, if I have to go to work, I might as well bring my favourite food for lunch... Donair Poutine! Now, I won't lie. Despite having worked in this area in the past and being well aware of Simon King for the last 10 years... I had never checked them out. But my first two choices were closed, so I headed in. And i'm glad I did! They will never be 3rd choice again, and when I'm in the area I will definitely be a regular customer. Service was fast and friendly. They do have a lot of variety on their menu, but it's confusing. They just have the names of the items listed, no details at all. Does "mushroom donair" mean it's a donair with mushrooms? or is it a vegetarian option that replaces meat with mushrooms? I have no idea. Luckily, I knew what I was getting and it was really straight forward. Fries were crispy. meat was flavourful. Sweet sauce was DELICIOUS and they didn't cheap out on it. read more

If I was a stoner, me and my friend Peter would definitely be able to star in a movie called "Samson and Peter go to Simon King Donair" We got the Jumbo Donair, and the Cheese Donair with an order of fries and onion rings. This was a big mistake. My friend isn't a small fella, and I had a massive gym workout and we could not finish our orders. Our donairs came out fresh and hot with crispy yet soft donair meat. I can honestly say I've never had a better donair in the city. I've been to high voltage and queen donair and this beats them both. Massive huge donairs defeated us and we left a mess of unfinished fries....but we will be back to be avenged on you! With all this , why didn't Simon King get a 5 star review? It comes down to atmosphere. Seriously , how does a donair place have to have atmosphere? It's a freakin' Donair place. If you've seen the show "Diners, Drive ins and Dives" this would be a Dive. Great food. Greater poor service. When we came in there were screaming children running around, and we thought , no big deal somebody brought their kids in, then we realized they were the kids of the owners and management. This really isn't a big deal , but coupled with surly service behind the counter it made me think one thing. It's a family run restaurant, and some of the family members don't really want to be there. Unemptied over flowing trash cans, empty ketchup containers, dirty tables. Went along with a friend who raves about this place. Apparently this place has been here since the 90's if not longer based upon a newspaper article from 1993 that they have framed on the wall. The place started getting long lines closer to noon but it seemed most people preferred to do takeout orders, so there was a few tables still available. Anyway we ordered what we came for...the highly recommended Simon King Burger with fries and it was ready in under 10 minutes. The burger looked enticing with it's generous amount of meat. It was practically had burger patties with donair meat loaded on top. I took a few bites and I new instantly this was good food and would delight any meat lover. Apart from the continuous struggle to keep the meats from sliding out of the buns, overall the experience was enjoyable. I think this is one of the most amount of meat I have seen on a burger. The fries on the other hand were disappointing. They were bland and seemed undercooked. A star lost for the fries. My coworkers and I went to simon king for lunch today. We all ordered "Jumbo" donairs. 17 dollars for the combo. Turns out the "jumbo" donairs have about 4 pieces of meat total in them. Smaller than a regular donair from anywhere else. But Jumbo price. Also, the sauce is bland and flavorless and the staff is rude. No one in my office will be back. I like this place because it's close and the staff are friendly! The Donair here is like most in the city, not quite my favourite place to have donair but it fills the void when a craving arises! This places offers a variety of sizes of donair, some of which include cheese. I believe there are 3 sizes to choose from. I usually get the regular with cheese. It's always packed with lots of meat and sauce but still remains delicious to the last bite. It doesn't get soggy by the end, but you're still able to have all ingredients in every bite. I'm a messy eater so most of mine ends up on my plate and I eat it up with a fork at the end! The meat isn't as spicy as I would like, but it's still far from bland and full of flavour. It's the only thing I've ever had here and next time I will have to venture out and try something different! It looks as though their menu is quite large, offering many different combos! They used to have one of the best Donairs here in Edmonton, well worth travelling across the city to get one. The 'Jumbo' used weigh well over a pound. I got a Jumbo Donair on Friday, August 10th, 2018, it weighed less than 12 ounces, Very Very Disappointing. The Curry taste on the first bite, is a little over welming. 4.5 Stars I have been eating donairs from Simon King for the last 25 years. Not consistently since I live in Los Angeles and they don't travel well, but when I am in Edmonton, this is one of the places I stop in and visit pretty much every time I come. This past October was no exception. The restaurant is a decent size and is set up like a Middle Eastern restaurant with the chairs that look like you're in a hotel ballroom and smaller rectangular tables. It's always clean (even when it's snowing and they've sanded the parking lot) and the staff is consistently quick in making the donairs. They could be friendlier though. I get mine with beef (and they are generous with the amount of meat that is put into the donair by the way) and cheese. The pita/flatbread they use is soft and chewy, the meat is juicy and cooked to perfection and the sauce has just the right amount of spice that the cucumber sauce nicely balances out. It does get messy eating them with all the juices running out all over the place so I suggest leaving them in their wrapper. They aren't super cheap, but they are super delicious! Honestly, I don't think I've ever had anything else on their menu. 25 years of the same thing. That tells you something. Can't wait for my next one! read more

Now must be under different management because service is almost rude and quality of food is dropping. I just recently ordered the donair pizza which was actually not bad but a little overdone. If you love donairs you will definitely love this place. The one thing that sets them apart from other donair joints in the city are their spicy donairs, they add a cajun type seasoning which makes for a delicious donair! I also love the people that work here. They really love their donairs and will not let you do anything that may butcher the taste (ie. adding or taking out specific items). This may annoy some people but I like the fact they are so passionate about the food they make. It is a pretty big place for a donair restaurant and they always have the sports channel on but it's not somewhere to go to catch a game. In my opinion they are on of the best donair spots in town so do not hesitate checking it out, the spicy donair alone is worth it. DO NOT get extra spicy though.. you will thank me later. read more

Definitely a go-to spot when you're hankering for a gastronomical experience of donair in that area of town. The meat is flavorful and delicious, and their 'spicy' option has a nice kick. The pita the meat is served in is fresh, soft and tasty. Also, their sweet sauce is superb! My only qualm, after trying donairs all over the city, is Simon King's jumbo sized donair is not the behemoth I've come to expect from other restaurants. I've been coming here for years and I've always loved it. Recently they have gone through some sort of transition to the way they had typically done business. While the new screens they use to show the menu is nice, the prices of the donairs have jumped up a couple of dollars. Now, a $11.50 "jumbo" donair, wouldn't pass as a regular anywhere else. In addition, previously the majority of any donair was donair meat, now sadly, it's the vegetables. So, cost has increased 20% but the amount of actual donair had decreased approximately 30%, how very unfortunate. I will not be returning after a decade of loyal support. read more

Solid 4 or 4.5 for the 91st street / 51 ave location. I go here weekly. The donair meat here is more seasoned than what I've found other places and it's great. The sweet sauce is awesome, a little thicker in consistency so it's not watery like a lot of places. Choice of veggies is good - always seem fresh. Jumbo "spicy" beef donair is great, really they just add paprika but it gives it a little zip. Place is a "busy" lunch location, and moderately busy otherwise. Pretty friendly staff and place is usually very clean with exception of bathrooms. They have burgers and pizza's and I've been told their pretty good as well (I generally stick to the donairs). A little inconsistent on the donair sizes though - I usually have the "Jumbo Spicy", sometimes I get it and it's "big", occasionally needing a 2nd wrapper to close it up, and other times it's what I would normally think of as their Large. Despite that, the Jumbo is $10 even, so you're getting a good sized donair for the money. Other prices all seem in line too. Very good overall - great donair flavor with the meat and sauce. read more

Regardless of the Soup-Nazi-esque service, the food is incredible. Absolutely my favourite donair shop in Edmonton. If you haven't been, I highly reccommend it. The prices are fair, and your donair is heaping. My favourite meal to get is a Cheese Donair with only onions and a poutine on the side. Try it. You will not be disappointed. Just try not to be intimidated by the service! Also, contrary to the other comments I've read, the six or seven times I've been, it hasn't been busy at all. Perhaps I've just missed peak times, but I've certainly never had a wait longer than 5 minutes. My only real advice would be to make sure you grab a bunch of napkins. We have noticed quality has not been as good lately and lacking more often than not - if you order donairs in the evening from them. During the day - well put together , tasty awesome. But at night - the meat has been dry, the donairs have not been well done as those done during the day. Best traditional Donair ever ( actual cousin of Swiss Donair, and formally owned by Swiss ha). Heavy, Plain, Traditional. I average 2-4 a month around the city, so I know. They are kinda 80s style joint, not a date place but i am shocked by the amount of ladies getting the Jumbo. When they know you they treat you like family, but it can take time to develop this. This place is a well oiled assembly line. Get the King spicy ,or the Jumbo,no veggies, (they just get soggy, this is a meat dish). I get cheese. The cheese gets messy buts its good. Sometimes my girlfriend orders the chicken donair ,its good,but she always ends up trying to eat my Jumbo. Nothing fancy , fast , friendly, cheap. Lots of seating if you gotta eat in. Sports on the TV ,and lots of sunlight, i repeat probably not a date place.Simply the best Donairs. I drive from the north side to get here.I live near Swiss! and drive the extra 35 km round trip for this meat.Then i put it in the oven until I am settled down and dont intend to get up for the rest of the evening..Unless its lunch then i can usually only take a couple bites, and thats enough until i get home and got time to treat myself at the end of the day . Really awful service and poor food to boot! There is an old man who makes ALL of the donairs, and regardless of what you ask for on it, he'll make it how he wants, not how you do. Ask for no onions but loaded with everything else? No worries, just tomatoes and onions coming right up! Ask for a remake because he didn't read the slip with your order? Perfect, they'll fight you all the way, refuse to even add hot sauce or put close to the right amount of meat on the remake. Avoid this place. read more
