A/C vent
D P.

When I search for a decent place to stay to break up our trip, I should NEVER have believed this site: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g34242-Gainesville_Florida-Hotels.html This hotel/"conference center" appears to be 35 years old and never been updated. The rooms were run down, ants in the sink, cobwebs in the ceiling corners, vent on the A/C unit was filthy, pull out bed was broken in several places. Oh and the service was horrible. NEVER AGAIN!

I'm writing about my stay, July 17-20, 2025 at the Best Western Grand in Gainesville, Florida. The cleanliness of this hotel was HORRIBLE. The bathroom floors were dirty (I provided a dirty paper towel to management from wiping it), the carpet was dirty and unvacuumed. The furniture was dirty and dusty, the refrigerator was poorly maintained and not working correctly. The air vents, particularly the bathroom was caked with dirty and dust. I brought all of this to the attention of the manager Juan, and everything was ignored. Be it the hotel is dated, I get that, but it's NO excuse for being dirty.

My husband and I affectionately call this "the omelette hotel." They have a fantastic complimentary breakfast which includes an omelette station. One of the best complimentary breakfasts we've had anywhere. The pool area is beautiful and every employee we've met there has been super friendly and helpful. The rooms are acceptable. The bathroom is one of those where the vanity is separate from the tub and toilet. This makes taking a shower a little difficult because you have no where to put your clothes/glasses, etc. And even when using the toilet, it's hard to move as the door closes into the tight space. Finally, there is no room for a bathmat on the floor when opening and closing the door. We like the hotel amenities, but I think it's time for a bathroom remodel.

All lamp shades crooked

This year's visit not great. Room disheveled, sheets looked old and spotty. Asked for clean sheets but housekeeping refused. Towels old and worn. Sofa very uncomfortable. Pillows small And hard. Breakfast is outstanding.

We need a -0- review point This is the nastiest, dirtiest hotel I have seen in my years of travel and they have been many. Room was dirty, toilet had caked on pee on the side, rust and grime from bathroom to everywhere. Mold and mildew on curtains. Mini Fridge never been cleaned. So much caked ice there was no space to see inside. Floor dirty. Just too much to mention. I have so many photos and they were sent to their corporate office.

Long black hair in tub, presumably from the prior guest

This is a lengthy post. If you don't have the time to read it all, here is the executive summary: DO NOT, DO NOT, under any circumstances consider staying at this run-down, unclean, unsanitary, dingy, aging-badly hotel with the comically pretentious name of "Gateway Grand Best Western". Now on to the details: As an aside: If possible, do not visit Gainesville on a weekend when the Gators are playing at home in the "Swamp", because every hotel in Gainesville charges more than double their normal nightly rate. There are laws about "price gouging" that apparently do not apply in Gainesville. How this Best Western property received a rating of 8.6 on Hotels.com is completely unimaginable, unless of course, 10 is the worst possible rating on a scale of 1 to 10......and if that is the case then it should be rated at 9.5. First indications of a potentially negative experience begins outside where the sidewalks leading to the entrance are obstructed by fallen tree debris...which remained untouched throughout the afternoon and was untouched the next day. Lack of staffing or just complete indifference? Check in was uneventful, or so we initially thought....we arrived at 2:30pm and check in is at 4:00pm. Being early, we asked for a room as far away from the elevator as possible. No problem we were told and we were then assigned to the room 10 steps from the elevator. We returned to the front desk, patiently waited in line and matched up with a room that met our elevator criteria. Time wasted: 30 minutes. Now here's the part you should all be interested in: How was the room? It was what one would expect to find at a cheap run down hotel charging $49/night, not what one would anticipate for the outrageous charge of $250 (taxes included) for one night! Upon entering our room and closing the door, the first disappointment we encountered was that the safety lock on the inside of the door was broken, the metal actually snapped in half, the screws that once secured it, out of the door frame and just hanging in the air. So much for the additional security one would expect while we were sleeping. As we tentatively continued inside the room, the next disappointment was the bathroom which featured a toilet and ancient bathtub crammed together with a door that separated that claustrophobic space from the sink / mirror that shared the open space of the room. The towel rack over the toilet was bent and never replaced, the tiles defining the tub area had mold growing on the grout, and then there was the long black hair inside of the tub, presumably from the prior guest. The water overflow on the sink was filled with some sort of "growth" that was nothing short of disgusting. Moving on into the room a bit more, we encountered a rolling chair / desk. The chair being torn with the interior upholstery visable through a fairly substantial hole. Five more steps brought us to the side of the king sized bed and revealed a stain on the bedspread. Air conditioning was provided by a wall mounted mega-unit typical of an older hotel and it did provide cold air as it noisely cycled on and off throughout the evening. The mattress was comfortable and was fortunately free of bed bugs, which I was sure we would have encountered at this point. Lighting in the room was dim despite multiple lighting fixtures. Probably better that we did not have brighter lights to see what else was deficient in the room. We were originally intending to spend two nights but had decided upon check-in to cancel our second night. I could go on but at this point, I hope the takeaway is that unless you have no other options for an overnight stay in Gainesville, DO NOT STAY AT THE GATEWAY GRAND BEST WESTERN IN GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA! Footnote: Upon checking out we advised the front counter of the deficiencies in our room and the response was, "We'll mention it to housekeeping." Hilarious.

Overall a great stay. Hotel is older, but the rooms have been somewhat updated. There is a sports bar on site so we didn't have to drive anywhere. Breakfast was what you would expect from a hotel. AC in room would not drop below 74, but I managed to sleep through it. I would stay here again.

We have stayed at another hotel in the past but it is not part of the Hilton brand. Both times we stayed here, the weather was colder. The first time, we used the fire pit outside and the fireplace in the lobby was on but not the recent visit. I was looking forward to that. We had a digital key and I arrived prior to hubs, with no issues. The room was clean but there were no regular coffee kcups- just tea and decaf. I unfortunately did not notice that until the morning but was smart enough to bring my own. I used the shower first, which the cold water was almost non existent. If I turned the dial maybe to the 11 o'clock dial, it was not scolding my skin. The water also felt very slimy, which I believe means the water was soft. We had credits to use so after I picked up hubs, we went to the bar in the lobby for a couple of drinks. There was only one employee working and he was super busy. There were a lot of patrons there so we ordered drinks from him in between him taking care of others. We were enjoying ourselves lounging in the lobby and were able to order a second round. Their lobby is very nice and cozy. We requested a late checkout when we were done and told 1pm. Hubs paid in advance for the breakfast so we headed there around 10am. When we checked at the front desk, one of the breakfast staff informed us they did not have much food left. I thought that was messed up because breakfast is not included so there should be plenty of stock. The kitchen dude cooked us up some eggs and bacon, which I think was the last of what they had. We also checked with the desk to assure we had the late checkout, to which the employee gave us an earlier time. We then reiterated what was given to us the previous night and he put it in the computer. Shockingly, housekeeping knocked on the door of course at noon and we had to tell them again. We do like this hotel and will consider this location the next time we stay in Gainesville but will not pay for the breakfast and I will have to check immediately entering the room for supplies. The staff were professional and friendly so that is always a positive attribute.

Grateful for that** Immediately upon arrival there were young kids playing baseball in parking lot, parents got upset that I wanted to get through to park car...that was the beginning of the end...went in to check in and noticed they were hosting A LOT of kids baseball players. I asked if I left and didnt check if if they'd NOT charge me as I didnt want to stay in a Hilton with a lot of screaming obnoxious kids. Clerk said that NO they WOULD still charge me. OOOOOK then. Then mid conversation with desk girl, some rude dude stumbles up to the front desk asking where the bar is. Front desk cuts off my conversation and tells him where to go to meet his friends. Like what?! You're checking me in...why cater to that type of person when you're already dealing with a guest? There were limited rooms available so I was on first floor. The room itself was great...except mini frig didn't work (apparently common in gainesville) However, within minutes of being in room with door shut I could hear and feel the thumping music and kids screaming. I was there on a BUSINESS trip. I detest thumping foul music to begin with but especially at a HILTON! I expect more than that. I've never had this problem or any problem at any other Hilton other than now the 2 in Gainesville. I was advised by the front desk that "quiet time" starts at 11pm. That's pure insanity and totally unacceptable. In the morning when I checked out the gentleman that was at front desk asked how my stay was. I replied "awful" He wanted to know why. I proceeded to explain and he made excuses the entire time. Told me "That's Gainesville. A sports community." blah blah blah. I don't care if it's Gainesville or anywhere else, when I go to a Hilton I expect peace, quiet, quality otherwise I could stay at a grotesque Motel 8 or some nasty place. Ironically though I've now stayed at 2 different Hiltons in Gainesville and apparently "it IS Gainesville" equates to low quality, substandard service and accommodations. The other hilton was gross/nasty/maintenance issues but quiet...The Garden Inn Hilton was opposite...clean but loud, rude and obnoxious. After this stay, I've decided I will no longer be doing business in Gainesville because it's apparent that the Hilton's there don't meet my expectations like they do in Ormond Beach, Daytona and other areas. TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY and wish I had driven the 300+ miles home when I was done with my client on Saturday instead of staying...had I known how bad it was going to be, I'd have gone ahead and lost my $170 for the night and driven straight back. TOTAL FAIL on Hilton.

They keep the front area and dining room clean and offer tea and coffee throughout the day and evening times. They do have an outside pool and gym available. The rooms have a full size refrigerator and microwave which I appreciate. The downside is the trash builds up quickly outside room doors and near the elevators. The waste baskets in the rooms are way too small. Because of this people are putting their trash outside their rooms so housekeeping will pick them up or they put them near the completely full trash bins near the elevators. My niece had a room on the 4th floor and said someone had put out dirty baby diapers that stunk up the elevator area badly. With that said, when she brought this up to the front desk they addressed it quickly. It's just sad that housekeeping or maintenance didn't notice all the trash. I was on the 3rd floor and someone had their trash outside their door for two days with no pick up. I asked for extra trash bags since my bins were so full. My toilet started not flushing correctly as the flap was not closing completely on my last night. It worked like one out of three times. I could have called to ask it get replaced but I only had one more night and figured by the time they got to it I would have checked out. At night even though the A/C was on 68 degrees the suite felt warm. During the day it was freezing when it was on 68 degrees but at night it was a little uncomfortable to sleep in at least for me.

I went back to room very irritated and was informed there was no sheets or blankets for the pull out. Mind you none in room. Went back down and got those. Thinking this place had worse service than the motel 6 I stayed in 20 years ago I then discovered there was a smell of sewage coming from toilet.
