My husband and I like to think of ourselves as vey "sustainable". We walk to the grocery store and patronize our neighborhood retailers. But we're snobs when it comes to restaurants and flee to the city of Portland for a good restaurant experience. Why not when we find Portland on the national culinary map? Tonight we wanted to go out enough to "get out" but didn't feel up to driving into the city for dinner. Imagine our surprise when we ran across this little treasure 1 1/2 miles from our house! Our first criterion was that the restaurant should have patrons. Bethany's Table had about a 2/3 occupancy when we arrived and when we left it was full and buzzing. The wine list was very accommodating and we were surprised, after ordering wine, to learn that one can choose a bottle from the wine collection at the restaurant. The menu was impressive, covering all of the bases-vegatarian, fish, beef, etc. I found it interesting that there was very little price variation among the items. The ante was upped when we learned our waiter (owner?) was from Bordeaux. We knew it was the real deal when he didn't over-wait our table but left us alone to enjoy the whole experience. The food-I wasn't too hungry so ordered the beet salad which was more like cooked beets and greens-fine with me. My husband, not the cook in the house, loved the burger but he never met one he doesn't like. So, I defer to my friends who had raved about Bethany's Table (yes, I didn't believe them). This place is a nice little getaway in the heart of suburbia. My in-laws and some friends live nearby, and this is a nice, upscale-ish change of pace from the chain restaurants in Bethany. The owners are very hands-on and while some find the male owner a little overbearing he has taken the criticism into consideration as apparently a few people have complained. I never found him off-putting, but he has backed off lingering at tables if he gets the vibe he's outworn his welcome. The female owner is the chef, and if she's out of something or anything goes awry with your dish she will personally come out and explore different options with you! Very nice touch. The FOOD: I love the several specials listed on the board as you walk in, there are so many options and they rotate constantly based on the season/availability. I was sad to see my scallop salad leave the menu, but it will be back soon and is a must try. My in-laws love the bavette steak which seems to be a mainstay on the regular menu. My only gripe: I do find that at times the portions can be a bit small, and the prices a bit high. This can especially be the case with appetizers, which feed two but aren't priced accordingly. The SPIRITS: They have a very hands-on approach, you choose the wine or beer you want from their wine or beer "wall." The owner loves talking about his wines which he picks carefully, and servers are often quite knowledgeable about the wines if you're having a tough time. Since there are no really good restaurants on the West side, Bethany's Table stands out as the only beacon full of surprises. I've been to this place many... many times and I haven't been disappointed. Janet (the chef) strongly believes in sustainable veggies/produce and therefore the menu changes every 3-4 months. When in season, cioppino is strongly recommended - it's the 2nd best cioppino I had in this country. read more

I wanted to take my boyfriend out for a nice dinner but didn't feel like driving into Ptown so we decided to adventure across the street to Bethany's Table. Should have gone to Ptown. We each did the wine flight that they offered which was reasonably priced and each wine was a really solid wine. We started off with an artisan cheese plate which was pretty much what you think it would be, nothing too extraordinary or horrible there. We then moved onto a caprese salad which was very disappointing. The tomatoes were still unripened and had really hard centers which was unappetizing. For our main course we got their New York steak special which was served with a side of potatoes and green beans. The steak itself was fairly underwhelming and their maple bacon glaze didn't add much to it. The side potatoes were clearly from a box as they had that very noticeable artificial flavor to them. For dessert we ordered the cheesecake with bourbon soaked peaches. Peaches tasted fermented and neither of us ate them, the cheesecake was bland and underwhelming. Service was good, friendly staff who were knowledgeable about the menu and wines which was nice. Had a nice atmosphere although we were the only ones that under the age of 65 at the time. Overall this would probably be a good place to meet up with someone for appetizers in the wine bar and possibly would be a good lunch spot. But in the end, for dinner I feel I payed way too much for mediocre/bad food and next time I'd just take the time and effort to leave suburbia and enjoy the foodie wonders of Portland proper. read more

There's is a place over the hills of Forest Park where people go to eat fresh food. I went to Bethany's Table and enjoyed salad niciose and bowl of gazpacho. The salad nicoise, was made with fresh greens, just the right amount of vinaigrette, with a fresh steak of tuna on top. Every bite was a delight. However, what I most enjoyed was the Gazpacho soup. For those of you who don't know what Gazpacho is, it is soup made of raw vegetables with a tomato base served cold. I have to admit that when it comes to Gazpacho, I'm picky. I haven't finished a bowl of Gazpacho since 1984 when I used to work as a busboy and waiter at Piccolo Mondo, a northern italian restaurant on John's Landing. You see, Piccolo Mondo, set the standard for my palate of what Gazpacho was supposed to taste like as well as what consistency and texture it should have in my mouth. Since 1984, I have been searching for a bowl of Gazpacho that I could eat in it's entirety. For the past 31 years I have tried and not finished Gazpacho in dozens of restaurants. I have to admit, I may have finished a bowl of Gazpacho served to me by a friend or family member. But the completion of those bowls was out of a sense of obligation towards my friends or respect for my family members. Little did they realize how difficult it was to finish the Gazpacho I was served. But love for ones friends and family will always triumph or a bad meal. So, here I was, sitting in a restaurant off Exit 65 on HWY 26. This restaurant, nestled between Forest Park and the suburb of Bethany, created for me a bowl of the freshest most perfect temperatured Gazpacho, to enjoy on a hot Portland summer day, that I've had in 31 years. How can I describe to you the feeling of a multitude of subtle taste, the fresh texture of vegetables in a cool tomato base. I can't. Just go and eat it yourself. I will assume that Bethany's Table prepares all their dishes with the same care they took to create the salad nicoise and the Gazpacho soup. If so, I can't wait to go back and try their Coq Au Vin, mussels in coconut milk, spicy prawns and polenta or their hamburger made with local, organic, grass-fed "brew beef" 8oz patty. What's "brew beef"?, I don't care, if Bethany's Table is serving it. I'm eating it. read more

Best Polenta Ever. Came here for the first time for lunch last week. I had the polenta with spicy prawns. It was the best polenta I've ever had. Creamy and absolutely delicious to the last bite. I had to give my compliments to the chef. The dish was a bit on the small side but the quality more than made up for the quantity. I also appreciated that the waiter asked how spicy I wanted the prawns to be. Excellent and attentive service, lovely wood tabletops, nice atmosphere overall. Also, remember to ask for bread. Don't know why they didn't bring out bread without us having to ask, but when it came, It was warm, soft, freshly baked, accompanied with a dish of butter, and a wonderful addition to the meal. Bread is something that I've found many restaurants--even high priced ones--neglect. It's too often not warm enough, or not of sufficiently high quality to match the restaurant. Bethany's Table is making hay with its location near big expense account spenders from local corporate headquarters. They are one of the very few independent "better" restaurants in this "restaurant desert" suburb of Portland. However, know before you go. We wanted a quiet evening, but there were 30 people having a large business gathering when we arrived. They were extremely loud and drinking a lot, and so they got louder and louder. We could not even hear the waiter describing the specials. A restaurant that only seats 50 should shut down for a "private party" instead of forcing other diners to endure the decibels of a big rowdy group. We should have turned around and left, but it was a wedding anniversary and we just went for it. Food was not notable, for the $20 minimum charged for entrees. Would try again, but with some hesitation. Also, there is no visible sign on the restaurant, just a window etching. Good luck! read more

I am giving them four stars because of the food, not the service. We made a reservation and ended up waiting 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated. Then we didn't have anyone come to our table for close to 15 minutes. No apologies. The quality of our meals were great though! The Cesar salad, shrimp and polenta main dish, and the special tuna poke was amazing. The seared tuna was tasteless and I didn't even finish it. My husband and I both ordered the chicken Marsala. We both liked it but the mushrooms were very strong compared to the rest of the meal. Also thought it was strange that the chicken had a bone. It was delicious with crispy skin but it was difficult to get the meat off the bone. I told my husband that his chicken Marsala was just as good. We ordered the vegetable medley. It was very small and not worth the price. Dessert was disappointing. I ordered the sweet biscuit with strawberries with cream. The biscuit tasted savory and not enough strawberries (also not sweet). Disappointed that I paid $10 for it. My husband ordered an ice cream dish that had a bourbon (some kind of alcohol anyway) and it was so strong he couldn't eat much of it. I took one taste and to me it was awful. It was a wasted $12. Overall we were disappointed to pay over $100 with tip for this meal. Nice atmosphere. I just can't say enough nice things about this charming spot. I've had everything from snacks on the patio to Valentines dinner here. Every visit is a treat. I'm a former chef and can be picky, but have never been let down here. They use high quality ingredients and try to incorporate as much organic, local and seasonable fare as possible. Unlike so many places that espouse these virtues and then turn out average and uninteresting dishes, Bethany's offers beautiful, simple dishes, that enhance their ingredients. Everything from the bread and almonds, through dessert is made from quality ingredients. They have a nice selection of wines, with some inexpensive and eclectic choices. The atmosphere is friendly and casual, and the prices are reasonable. It's my very favorite place to eat, and one of the few that tempt me to sneak into the kitchen. read more

I ate here once before and the food was great as well as customer service. So then I brought my husband for a night out and all I have to say is it only takes one bad experience to leave a bad taste in the mouth forever. We were first greeted by two hosts/waiters backs for as long as 2 mins before they acknowledged us. Then we were sat in an almost empty restaurant near the busy kitchen and when we asked for one of the many empty other tables we were told they could not accommodate us. We are not difficult people, this was a customer service faux-pas times 10 in our eyes: take care of the patron in front of you. This seemed a concept very difficult for them. Will never go back, which is so sad because the food is not bad and it's near our home. Unfortunately they lost a potential long-time, repeating customer because of terrible customer service. read more
