Eastern Pearl (also known as EP) had a huge transformation for the good about 6 years ago. The space was cleaned up, with a much more clean vibe, while still having the game tables, Karaoke, sports tvs, and video poker machines the OG crowd knows and loves. The menu got a makeover as well; now mostly Asian fusion. I typically order the poke or ceviche bowl. The raw-raw-ish tuna dishes Eastern Pearl serves are good. The rice dishes I've had, not quite so good. The bartenders are friendly, as is the karaoke DJ. The EP on a weekday is the friendly neighbor spot. My friend asked if if I wanted to go grab a drink so of course I said yes, this was my 1st time going here. We walk in and right to the bar and get drinks , then head to the video poker machines. After a little while my friend hit a 600$ spin! At this time we were a little hungry so we got pot stickers & rolled tacos, they have an Asian & Mexican theme on a lot of the food & both things were good. I'll admit I came in with heightened expectations from Google and Yelp reviews but not so much that it skewed my honest opinion. First off, service was friendly, fast and attentive which is important. But not more importantly than the food which was just average and slightly below average when it came to anything chicken related. The chicken friend rice was just a hot mushy mess... it almost wasn't even recognizable as fried rice but more like a drier version of risotto. The Vietnamese fried chicken was so crazy dry that it was like eating jerky. While it had a nice fish sauce glaze and dipping sauce, it was a big disappointment. The Szechuan wontons were probably the best part of the meal. Also had a Yum Yum salad with chicken that was good but the chicken was also very dry. The pricing was excellent and you do get a lot of value, unfortunately not much else. It is a sports bar that offers slots, pool, and lots of tv's to enjoy. I would come back but I think I'd try more of the pub food next time and stay away from the Asian inspired items. read more

Wasn't sure what to expect on my first visit; Looks more like dance hall from the outside, but it feels like bar once you step through the door - or at least the room to your right does. The room to your left feels more restaurant-y, and the good news on that front is that the food is actually legit. It's definitely a step up from greasy burgers and jalapeño poppers, which thank god isn't what the menu is about. Seems to be counter service here (order at the bar). We got the chicken lettuce cups, which was comprised of a nice plate of sturdy greens to form the cup, ground chicken with a nicely seasoned sauce, some crisps and limes. Warm and filling, with good portion size, and very tasty. Someone else in the party got the lemongrass chicken Banh Mih, another dish that went over really well (it's all about the bread). There are other Asian-themed dishes on the menu too, which is pretty diverse; Brussels sprouts, salads, fried chicken, fish tacos and more. I believe breakfast/brunch is served on weekends only. Weirdly we didn't really see any true servers on a busy Saturday night but the bartenders were totally on their game and delivered everything without breaking a sweat. We ate in the bar area, which has a high ceiling and a long full bar counter on one side, with a bunch of TVs hanging up on the walls. The video poker and lottery games toward the back seemed hella busy, too, and beyond that is a game room with pool tables and ping pong, all sitting a foot lower than the bar space. Dunno why. This place is definitely a weirdly laid out jumble of rooms, all very separate in design and purpose. There's even a dedicated karaoke space on the other side of the building. It's all oddly compelling, so I will definitely be back to more fully experience this spot. read more

This place is huge! So you will mostly find a place to sit. It is diverted into the bar area and a dining room. The decor could be a bit more so that an empty room doesn't look cold but it's clean and there are some play night like bingo that will fill the room. The funny thing is that you would not expect an Asian inspired menu in a video lottery bar. But it is and it's good. The menu is not to big but especially during brunch time (9-1pm on weekends) they serve the typical American breakfast with twists. For example they have malted waffles. Which btw are delicious! Try them. I had some fried chicken and since I was so hungry forgot to take a picture haha. But I then had a club sandwich with fried chicken which was good. The service is so great fast and friendly! And they use real fabric napkins which is always a winner for me! This place is right by my house. They have a kind of Asian fusiony menu and also are a popular local drinking establishment with karaoke on the weekends. Yesterday minion and I needed breakfast and I remembered they offer brunch on weekends. At about 10:30 we called it in from my credit union's parking lot 5 minutes away (13 minutes! he said) and then swung by to pick it up. The place was pretty empty. Minion walked in and saw few people around so he asked the bartender about our order and it was all ready.Two breakfasts were $26 per the receipt. On the menu Minion's basic breakfast was listed at $11 and my cheddar and green onion omelet at $13. We got our food home in two minutes. It was hot. Everything was good. My omelet was tender, Minion's eggs were not too hard or too squishy so he was satisfied. The bacon was perfectly crispy. The small amount of potatoes were oddly dry and healthy tasting, not greasy like typical restaurant potatoes. That was ok, just unexpected. My omelet came with an English muffin whereas the menu said it came with a biscuit, but that was okay too. Luckily I had jam and ketchup at home. It was fine. All in all a decent meal. We had espresso from elsewhere which is why we didnt eat there ( I think it is rude to bring outside drinks in) but I think we would try eating there next time. Happy they are in my neighborhood. Decent place to get some food and watch a game. Drinks and food were both good. Yakisoba, lemongrass tofu and poke were all good quality. I am on the fence about 3 or 4 stars rating due to the service. I had visited them before with a friend and I had a good time. This time, we visited as two couples and two toddlers. I called ahead to ask if children were welcome. They confirmed that they are. Ethan, who had also answered my call, was friendly and helpful. He made us feel welcomed. He made sure the tv worked in the dining area for the game and overall had a welcoming demeanor. If the owner is reading this, make sure to treat Ethan well. All the other areas were closed off to minors including the billiards and ping pong tables. The dining room had a shuffleboard but we didn't get to use it because it was covered up and we didn't feel like bothering them to let us use it (see below for more on why) The bartender who actually served us had a passive aggressive personality which made us feel unwelcome. They got a little frustrated when someone changed something on the tv and sports channel went away. They were also a bit restless when our table was taking a few seconds longer to review the menu to order food. Almost snatched the menu away from my friend's hand, hah. They forgot to put two items in from our order and we had to remind them. Nobody checked on us for more drinks and we were not told to just go to the bar. To be clear, this establishment doesn't seem like the one to be visited with kids, even though they have a pretty large dining area and things kids will enjoy. I get it that we were not their regular clientele. It is a dive bar and a decent one for that but not a place to go as a family due to its service and all entertainment off limit from dining room. We still had a decent time. Beaverton/NW Portland area has a lot of young parents (with desire to spend money) who would love to go to such places with entertaining setup (good food, TVs, billiards, ping pong etc). The Korean fried chicken was way over cooked, and the carrots that came with that tasted perfumey. Came here for Portland dining month. The exterior looks like any bar (with it's own parking lot), but when you get inside you see a really nice, large bar on one side and a restaurant on the other. The bartender was the only server on at that time, so we opted for the bar to make it easier on her. No problem, it's a nice bar. You might think one person serving for a bar and restaurant might mean bad service, but you'd be wrong. She busted her butt and was prompt and super friendly. They have specialty cocktails named after the Chinese zodiac. It's a nice variety from $7-10.50 so we decided to try a couple. They were so delicious. They all sounded good so it wasn't an easy decision. We got our food that was beautifully plated and very delicious. I never thought I'd say a salad was the star of a meal, but damn that beef on top was flavorful with a bit of a kick on the end. Everything was prepared wonderfully and tasted delicious. They impressed me again with the best flourless chocolate cake I've ever had. Not usually a big fan, but it was so creamy it reminded me of cheesecake. The regular menu looked really appetizing too. The Pearl is our local favorite considering we can walk there from our house. It used to be the dive bar where everyone knows your name, but has since shined up thanks to new ownership. The drinks are cheap, the bartenders friendly & the slots are fun. We have tried food items from the updated menu & while it's pretty good, we prefer going just for drinks.
