I was in the area for work on a Monday afternoon so I took a lunch break to get in some ocean air. I have been to one Better Buzz location before and loved it so I decided to check out this one. Super walkable area and a great decision to grab coffee and soak in the ocean view. I got lucky with no line as other reviewers have mentioned. Customer service was great and they were super efficient. I barely sat down and got my notebook out when they called my name. I tried their seasonal special: ice peppermint mocha. Do not expect your food to be there when you order ahead. After probably about 100 or more times we've been here, I have to finally leave a review. We have an apartment right above this place, their ceiling is our floor. The pick-up area for the food is about the same distance most of us walk from bedroom to the kitchen in our homes. So when any of us are at the apartment, Better Buzz is just plain convenient. The food and coffee is really good 90% of the time, the app for ordering is simple, and a couple of their employees seem to care about things a little bit which is why I gave 3 stars. But when it comes time to pick up the order, it's so frustrating! Do not order online and expect that to save you any waiting time. The order is either not ready because they are running behind, or more annoying and AVOIDABLE, someone else has taken your order. And it's OFTEN! They put the online ordered food and drinks on a shelf on the other side of a busy walkway/waiting area where people walk by to get to the back entrance or the bathroom. And where people stand waiting for their orders. So the food and drinks are often taken by other people- either purposely or mistakingly. I've never mistakingly taken anyone's order because the name is printed on the sticker of each and every cup, container or bag. So my guess is it's on purpose. It happens ALL THE TIME. When I ask about my order they say "oh I put it on the shelf, someone must have taken it." And then you have to wait while they remake your order. Usually with no sense of urgency on anyone's part other than the kitchen I guess, since the food portion usually comes undercooked - avo toast is never extra toasted like we requested, or even toasted at all. But the whole experience shows how little they care about the customer. The food is already expensive and I always add a tip when I put in the order in, but tipping makes no difference. I will probably stop as they don't even care anyway. We've stopped going there as often as we used to only due to the pick-up issue. There are ways for them to solve it but apparently they don't even see it as a problem. Probably because it's always busy so they figure people will keep coming no matter what. So if you have plenty of time on your hands and don't care about customer service or prices, I would recommend trying this place. The food and drinks are actually really good! read more

One of my favorite places to drink coffee and chill out when I have work to do. I usually always get the blended drinks, but lately I've been trying different drinks every time I go. If you go to a drive through you won't be able to order any actually food besides bagels and cookies. However if you go to one of their bigger establishments like in Encinitas or hillcrest, not only will you be able to order actual breakfast food but you can also each there and enjoy the atmosphere. My favorite locations are the two that I listed, mainly because they're super nice to sit and relax at and they're also pretty big. I haven't gotten to the new building they have in pacific beach but I plan on going there sometimes soon. If you're going for aesthetics, the bigger buildings are super cute and super clean. Better Buzz has a bee theme and you can find it in all the little details. Inside the bathroom at the hillcrest location the tile floors are homey combs and there's bee decorations everywhere in the building. I'm not a fan of the expresso, because they grind up the expresso beans and put it into your drink which is something I don't like. When I got the grounded up expresso beans in my blended vanilla drink it tasted really weird and I didn't like the texture. If I just want something caffeinated I just order a Best Drink Ever or some coffee drink. I personally find most of the drinks really good overall, just without expresso beans. This location has been a favorite of mine for years. The coffee is exactly what you expect- they aren't trying to be hipster and too funky. They have charm and amazing coffee, which should get them the business they deserve. Truthfully, I've never tried the food here so I can't speak too much to that. Bam! This may be rather busy during peek hours, but they sure know how to make some great coffees and eats, not to mention some scrumptious eats as well. Stopping on an early Saturday morning before the mad mid morning rush, I ordered, although not on the menu at this location, the Café au lait and the avocado toast on multi grain bread, topped with sweet cherry tomatoes, a sprinkling of fresh feta cheese, and a small side salad. First of all the Café au lait or coffee with milk was dynamite. The amount of hot milk was just right that it produce a light frothy semi sweet foam right on top, but just thin enough so that it did not interfere with the full flavored bold coffee underneath. The Café au lait did not come with any sugar and it did not need any. The coffee itself was very smooth and rich, and the natural flavor and sweetness of the hot milk provided a nice balance. The avocado toast was bliss. The avocado spread was abundant, quite fresh, and flavorful. The saltiness of the feta was paired perfectly with the milder Hass avocado. The cherry tomatoes provided a nice mild sweetness and acidity to the toast, and the multi grain toast was terrific. I thought it was keen that they offered a thick slice of toast with a very light toast. The bread was very moist and filled with a great high grain natural flavor. It was the perfect vessel for this avocado toast. The young ladies who made my Café au lait and avocado toast were great. I ordered a nonfat dark latte, for my mom, a nonfat light roast latte. Both were delish! I also ordered a hearty avocado toast, which was yummy and filling. The decor inside is very cool, lots of earthy wooden tables and metal chairs and light fixtures makes that now very common, yet still really aesthetically pleasing, industrial chic meets modern farmhouse, a wonderful setting to sit and chat over a latte topped with a leaf artfully dribbled with steamed milk. Anytime I'm in Encinitas, it's a must stop for BDE. If you don't know, then you need to find out. I love this place, but damn, it gets super busy with the lines, and lack of parking (since it's downtown Encinitas). Usually at least a 15-20 min stop for me to grab a drink, and yes it's worth it.
