This is a little late but the saying is, better late than never. Honestly, I thought I had left a review but when I checked, it was not here so here it goes... For my husband's birthday I decided to give him a charter fishing trip. We woke up bright and early and signed in. My husband told me to take seasick pill even after I told him that I don't get seasick. I kind of think this was the cause because... Yep, you guessed it, after we were on the bumpy water and I had caught one whole fish, I started feeding the fish. My entire trip was me feeding fish. Oh, wait, except the one time I decided to feed try the reel again and slipped going head to head with the fish in the bins beneath me. I could have sworn one was screaming "Nooooooo!!!!" As I was trying to avoid him. The crew was so amazing! They had to try and balance taking care of me along with the many fishermen/women/kids. They even changed location of smoking because I told them it was making it worse for me (yes, they smoke on the boat). The crew caught my fish for me so when hubby and the rest were finished we had plenty of fish. I highly recommend taking this charter and plan on going again sooner than later...but without the seasick pills. If you want to go fishing, take one of the other boats. My Dad and I had not been fishing in years. I spent a lot of money bringing us together so we could enjoy the morning fishing. Nice captain and crew. When we got to the first spot, 2 people caught Lingcod. We hoped to as well. We were getting bites and the captain said not enough action pull it up. Only 15 min fishing and we were on our way. The next stop about 20 min later had no real bites. The next stop was so full of rock cod some were pulling in on two hooks. They were passing the fish around till everyone had 5 whether you caught them or not. My Dad was given two fish and they said ok limits reached let's go home. Maybe 45 min of fishing home at 9:00. We could have gone to the store and bought more fish for less. We wanted to fish. The captain wanted to get it over with ASAP. read more

Went on the Shamrock for a half-day rock-fish trip. It was a great trip overall. The captain made sure to find the best fishing spots, and we would move somewhere else as soon as the fish stopped biting. The deckhand was very good at explaining everything, and both him and the captain made sure everything went smoothly and that all the fish that were caught got onto the boat and that nobody got tangled up. This was my six-year-old daughter's first time out on the ocean or even in a boat. She was extremely excited and very much enjoyed catching her first fish. It was a memory of a lifetime for my whole family. It was the best part of our vacation, hands down. Everybody on the boat caught their limit and seem to be having a really good time. Had a great time today! The trip was easy to book and pay for on line. Captain Bill and Bam Bam were great. Bam's enthusiasm and positive attitude really made the trip fun. He was alway right there to untangle a line or net your fish and remove the hooks. Caught lots of fish. They had fresh coffee and donuts when we boarded. That was an unexpected treat. We also saw a whale shark!!! I'm recommending this charter to all my friends and family. read more

We're from Seattle but were touring around the area. I had wanted to take my 5 & 7 year old out for some real fishing, and catch some good ones. There are a lot of charter companies in the area so I didn't know where to start. I asked around at a boat dealership, the local tourist office, and a few businesses. Many were mentioned, but every one of them included Betty Kay in their recommendations. The price was right, and Captain Kathy was great along with her First Mate (though I don't remember his name, he did a great job). The kids really got to do some great fishing, and they took care of all of us. Would happily go back to Coos Bay and spend a week fishing with these guys, it was that good. read more

This was quite the adventure! The good, the bad, and the ugly. The captains assistant who I believe was Matt was really patient when I got my line tangled like 5x. (I got the vibe that Captain Kurt might not have been so patient lol) Warning: it is freezing so dress really warm. But more importantly take Dramamine according to directions and bring more with you. You don't want to be getting sick the entire time! Some poor woman did not stop vomiting for four hours and was sobbing. Pretty sure it was one of the worst days of her life. I felt a bit nauseous even taking the max amount, also saltines help. The three of us had a splendid time on the Shamrock, one of this company's two vessels. The captain seemed to have a magical connection to the fish we were targeting, over and over again putting us on them, despite having to run over an hour and a half from port to find them. The boat limited, and so did we. The manager was kind enough to offer us secure storage for our bikes while we were fishing. Yes, these folks are tops. The port, by the way, is Charleston, a quiet genuine fishing town that hasn't given itself over to tourism. It's worth a visit even if you don't go fishing. We had our catch packed, frozen and shipped by Chuck's Seafood, who could not have been more helpful. read more

Took my wife and three grandkids on a trip with Betty Kay Charters on the afternoon of Aug 2, 2020. Although I realize the crew doesn't control the weather, we picked a beautiful day. Mild winds, warm and sunny. About a 1 1/4 hour trip south of Coos Bay, they found a school of sea bass. The crew was very attentive, assisted with landing the fish and being sure everyone had fun. The boat limited out. The trip back was very scenic and the captain allowed the kids to join him in the pilot house to learn about the boat's pilot system, radar and depth finders. Went above and beyond. When we got back to the dock, there were two fish filleters who also were excellent and entertaining. The boat was clean, well maintained and the deckhand did a great job of explaining safety procedures. Highly recommend Betty Kay Charters. read more

Nothing but good times and fish, every time I go. This is a longstanding local treasure. These guys are very experienced and know what they are doing and how to get you into the fish. If you are inexperienced, they will help you and make it fun and if you are experienced (and being safe) they will leave you alone. Tips- check the marine forecast (NOAA Medford office- Coastal waters forecast) and dress in layers. I have been both colder and warmer than I imagined I would be. Bring a coat and rain gear, if indicated by the weather. Sunblock and sunglasses are pretty important too. Take your sea sick pills- it can be pretty calm or fairly rough depending on weather and swell size- the non drowsy ones work well for me. Bring a lunch and some snacks. I usually bring a backpack full of my stuff. It is a truly spectacular, beautiful and fun way to spend a day, and see the world from a different angle. Put on your adventurous attitude and it is guaranteed fun! read more

Had a great time! They were very professional and allowed us to change our charter trip at the last minute. The Captain and deck hand were very good at keeping us on the fish. Our trip was fortunate enough to limit out on Rock Fish. We also pulled in about 6 Lin Code. Remember its the ocean, and the seas might get rough, but if you want to catch fish these guys can get you there. read more

Boat and tackle were really bad. Didn't bleed fish and only used shrimp flies. Really disappointed.

Went out on the Betty Kay with Capt. Kurt and deckhand Max. Both were very friendly and helpful! Max was especially patient with the newbies fouling their lines. Fishing was very good a lot of limits were caught. Several lingcod hit the deck. I caught a HUGE vermillion rockfish, the biggest I've ever seen. The only thing I didn't like was the condition of the building and the boat. I saw a lot of small things that needed repairing and cleaning. However the boat was in safe running condition and at the end of the day all that matters is a safe, fun, and successful trip. My expectations out of a charter service were met and exceeded. Would go again and would recommend to my fishing friends! read more

I took my husband deep sea fishing for his birthday and it was incredible. Captain Kathy and her First Mate, Bam Bam, were so great. That was our first time deep sea fishing and we couldn't have had a better experience. We caught our limits and even saw some whales. Highly, highly recommend this charter to anyone who wants to deep sea fish. They also had a fillet station on the dock that was very reasonable and they did a great job fillet our catch. read more

The boat we were on did limit out but the fish we caught were considerably smaller and less varied than the fish caught by the other boat from this same charter company. Every tub of fish from the other boat had several species of very large fish in it and one man caught a 25 lb. ling cod. Our boat caught four small ling cod and the majority of the rest of our fish were small black rockfish. When we asked the captain of our boat why the other boat caught so many large fish and ours were so small, he appeared visibly angry and said the captain of the other boat did not communicate with him. He even mentioned while we were out on the water that he wondered why they weren't talking to him. He said they had gone down to Bandon. When we inquired in the office as to why the other boat had such a large catch and we didn't we were told that the group on the other boat is a group that comes every year and they are extremely experienced fishermen and we were just inexperienced and that is why we didn't catch any large fish. We were also told that we were all fishing in the same area, yet we never saw the other boat once while we were out. The captain of our boat did his best to get us fish and if we were so inexperienced why was it we caught our limit. We will never use this charter company again and recommend that anyone else not use it unless you happen to be on their list of "experienced fishermen" who get their preferential treatment. read more
