We found this place because every place we came to before it was packed, it didn't look like much from outside, but we were thrilled (and lucky) that they had a table big enough for 5 of us. The service was top notch, I love when that happens. Everything came out quickly It was great that we could get lunch or dinner, so 3 of us got breakfast, the pancakes were good and the bacon was cooked perfectly. My son got the bacon cheeseburger omelet and he was raving about good it was. The Reuben was so good! The portion of chicken tenders was big, it became 2 meals when we took it home. The fries and homefries were cooked perfectly. The coffee was good, the small chocolate milk were tiny but we'd just get the large next time. Overall a great experience! read more

Greasy spoon with traditional fare. My meal was fine (lunch sandwich) but the water in my coffee and ice water glass I asked for was HIGHLY questionable. "Oily" describes both examples. I usually give anyplace a second chance but not this one. Portsmouth Health Department would have shut this place long ago - no so in this town. read more

Classic New England Diners are some of my favorite places to eat, particularly on a Sunday like this where I had been out late Saturday and had a long drive ahead of me. I've been to many, many places like this in Maine, New Hampshire, and Connecticut, so while I really wanted to enjoy Betty's, the service and food both left something to be desired. Service was mostly friendly but quite slow; even on busy days (and even with parties of 6) I expect faster than 20+ minutes for food to arrive. The food that did arrive was about average, though the sausage gravy + biscuits were some of my least favorite anywhere. The gravy was runny, the sausage tasted like ground beef, and the biscuits were small and hard. My friends' meals were good sized but equally disappointing, with most nobody in our group (all of diner-lovers) giving any major kudos for the meal. read more

Today was our first visit to Betty's Kitchen. Upon entry we were immediately greeted with friendly faces and the overpowering smell of fresh cooked bacon. It took us a little while to decide what we wanted because everything in the menu looks amazing. Finally I settled on coffee and a bacon cheeseburger omelet with a side of hash and hollandaise sauce. It's safe to say I wasn't disappointed the food was expertly cooked. And our server Linda was very attentive. Betty's rises head and shoulders above your average diner. Everything on the menu is scrumptious, from the New Hampshire omelette (with maple sausage) to the Polish breakfast (with kielbasa, eggs and hash browns). Even the corned beef hash was noticeably better than any I've had (and I've had lots) -- the waitress asked me if I wanted it crispy, so I didn't even have to tell her! Wait staff is friendly and accommodating (and they and the cooks seem to be 100% female based on our several visits). They deal with longtime regulars and summer tourists and everyone in between. Great people watching and a mellow, contented vibe prevails. One downfall: the coffee is just average diner coffee ... meh. Otherwise though, Betty's is sure to please! read more

I love this place for breakfast. My friends and I go here once a month for our girl's day out. But I have to confess, I've only eaten one thing here: eggs benny. We always get the eggs benny, and it's probably the best I've ever had anywhere. In fact, it's the gauge I use to judge other people's eggs benny. The decor is plain and nothing fancy. This place was recommended by a friend. We loved it!! I had the Betty's Omelet and it was huge. All of the ingredients were fresh - real slices of tomato, fresh mushrooms, and the best bacon!! My daughter got one of the Benedicts and the waitress, who was super sweet and on top of everything, asked if she wanted a whole or half. Betty's is the best breakfast diner in New England. I love the stuffed French toast which has strawberries, blueberries, and banana slices between the two slices of French toast and also on top of the stack. It is then smothered in whip cream sprinkled with brown sugar. Yum. A little girl at a table next to us asked her dad for desert after she finished her breakfast. He told her that they do not serve deserts for breakfast. She immediately looked at my meal and knew it was desert. read more

I have driven past this place MANY times on my way to Kittery. I was hungry the other day and choose to stop here. I was greeted with a smile and sat at the counter. Coffee was offered and filled before I even looked at the menu. Ordered my normal order 2 OM, HF (well done), Bacon (Crisp), Wheat. Grill is in front of the counter so you can see the cook. there were several orders before mine but the food came in a reasonable time. Coffee was kept full (important to me). The food was cooked to order. Home fries needed a few doses of salt.... but did taste OK. The Bacon is thick cut and was really good! Prices are fair. Early bird specials (5-8 AM) are a steal. Kids breakfast is reasonable as well. They are open until 2 PM daily. I would certainly eat here again. read more

I can't say enough about this quaint little diner. Thank goodness our GPS was working enough to get us here! My bf had an omelette which he enjoyed, the coffee was hot and they kept it coming. I had two perfectly cooked eggs on rye toast and breakfast potatoes and it was all delish. The prices are what you would expect for a diner. The decor was nice, the place was clean and cozy. The women who were working during our visit were just the sweetest! My boyfriend and I were on vacation and they gave us some great local tips and suggestions of beaches before sending us on our way. I went to Betty's for the first time in thirty years and it hasn't changed a bit. The food is just as good as I remembered it to be. My only complaint is they use Spic n' Span to clean off the tables and it leaves a strong odor. Traveling from NH to Maine, we were starving and decided to see what was in the area for breakfast. We drove up to Betty's Kitchen, where there were lots of outdoor tables with umbrellas. The service was prompt. The food was GREAT! I had the 2-2-2 breakfast: 2 pieces of bacon, 2 French toast and 2 eggs. Doesn't look like much and the inside isn't necessarily the prettiest, but the food was so so so amazing. I have the Veggie Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was so rich and creamy, the best I have ever had. My girlfriend had french toast and she said it was the best she never had. It is what it is a diner. Great food for breakfast and a lot of it. Yes everything is cooked on that 50 year old flattop but that's the way it should be. Regular old school home fries sitting on the grill crispin up no rosemary or other junk. Staff is great and Tim the cook is an amazing line cook just pumps it out. I've had high hopes four consecutive visits but have been let down all four times (and each progressively worse). My most recent visit I ordered the NH omelet which sounded delicious, in theory, but turned out to be a watery, unapologetic mess of an omelet. I've tried this place multiple times to let it live up to its rep (especially considering it's right down the road), but have decided on not giving it another chance.
