To start off, nowhere online does it say "No Vapes", it's stapled at the bottom of the courthouse Rule as you enter the building and You will be denied entry with it and have to go back to your Vehicle and leave it there. Secondly, do not Wear clothing with a permanently attached Belt, you will be denied Entry, the Security will raise their Voice at You like that will make the Belt magically not be permanently attached. Lastly, be very mindful that the security Staff have a Mount Everest size Chip on their Shoulders, apparently making Eye Contact Warrants a Strip Search for Jury Duty. I'm all for doing my "Civic Duty" but when you are Talked down to like You are a Child, at that point I question My Civic Duty. I'm still trying to Wrap My Mind around how a Belt is deemed a threat. read more

You should definitely come early to in order to get a spot in the parking garage (211 S Flores St). I parked by the B stairs and that was the one right next to the crosswalk you need to take to walk to the courthouse. You're going to walk diagonally and go down one block to Dolorosa St. The building doesn't open until 7am, but they are very prompt. Go through the security checkpoint and take the elevator down to the basement. There will be signs to show you where to go (central jury room). The courtroom doesn't open until 7:30, but people are lining up right at 7am Don't forget your postcard! And make sure you do the questionnaire online. Before the doors open, someone comes out to explain what's going to happen when you go into the room. They scan your postcard at the entrance and someone inside the room validates your parking ticket and tells you where to sit. Everyone files in and takes a seat accordingly. The seats that the front people get (on the right side of the stage) don't look as comfortable as the rest of the seats in the room. When you're eventually called to a room, there's a lot of standing around and waiting, I feel like they could be more efficient with this. You can give your excuse/reason to be dismissed to the judge but they don't actually dismiss you. My whole entire group of 75 stayed until the very end, 4:30, where they tell you who they've selected as their jurors and then everyone can leave. A little annoying considering now everyone is headed to the garage and it'll take forever to get out. read more

We visited the Bexar County Courthouse today 13, March early in the morning. The staff there are very rude. I got no response to my Good Morning. I am a senior and exercised appropriate manners by greeting. The people looked like they would rather be elsewhere. We visited the basement floor and also greeted the man at the window and requested assistance with some paperwork, he looked totally miserable. THIS IS THE COURT HOUSE!! They have a job!! Apparently they are not happy there. Is this who my tax dollars employs? Suggest that all employees get training in customer service. read more

Note: This review specifically pertains to showing up for Jury Duty at this building. Kudos to both the staff and my fellow Yelpers for helping me make my Jury Duty here go smoothly. The restrooms, hallways, and court areas are kept clean. Everyone working here was friendly and understanding of the mass numbers of new people coming in every day and looking for the location of the jury room et al. Some notes for those doing jury duty here: 1) You'll likely be instructed to be at the main jury room in the morning. Show up at the Bexar County Parking Garage at 211 S Flores St by 7:30am to get a spot. As of April 2023 it's only $5/day. Bring your ticket, get it validated at the main jury room, and it's only $3/day. I've heard of the neighboring lots charging quadruple that rate or more, so it's worth showing up early. 2) The courthouse is one block north and east of the garage. There's a diagonal crosswalk at Flores and Nueva that helps you get there quickly. 3) You'll need to go through a security point with a metal detector. The main jury room is in the basement, they'll directly. Once you show up, expect a long line since the room opens at 8am and they'll be giving you juror ID stickers to wear. 4) Jury duty is a lot of 'hurry up and wait'. You'll be given plenty of breaks though, so no worries. If you didn't bring something to snack on, there's a full-service cafeteria directly across from the main room, and plenty of restrooms. (The best are across the basement courtyard in the next building over.) Don't expect much from the cafeteria, but it's passable. 5) Keep your eyes out for comfy chairs. If you're stuck outside a courtroom waiting 30 minutes for someone to show up, look around corners or down hallways within sight of your fellow jury members. Otherwise you could be leaning against a wall for a long time. Also, bring a jacket if you get cold easily, it's pretty chill in this building. 6) Once you're done with your jury duty, take advantage of the fact that you've got the cheapest parking in the area for the day. Walk two blocks north to visit Pinkerton's, a long-time San Antonio BBQ institution. Get the moist brisket and the jambalaya, you won't regret it! 7) Finally, don't grouse too much about jury duty. The time spent is a small price to pay in terms of service for the rights and benefits we get in the United States. (That said, if you get stuck in a months-long case on something boring like insurance fraud...yeah, sucks to be you.) read more

I am reviewing this courthouse as a historical building, and the importance of it as such, not as a business. The building was designed by architect J. Riely Gordon in Romanesque Revival style. It is located right off The Riverwalk and can be seen from afar, and if your visiting San Fernando Cathedral (and you should), it's right across. It is almost impossible not to notice four stories of native granite, red sandstone, terracotta, beehive dome and towers, and green tile roofs-absolutely gorgeous! In 1977 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Lady Justice sculpture located right upfront the building, gives it excellent visual contrast. read more

At some point in your life you will go to the County Courthouse. It's just a given and an unavoidable truth. Be it to pay a traffic ticket. Marriage. Divorce. Maybe to dispute land. Or god forbid you are here for some felonious reason. This place was created to be punitive. Not just for the accused but also for regular citizens. And yes at some point in your life you will receive a Jury Summons in the mail. For a very small few being able to become a juror is an exciting prospect. For everyone else you pray you don't get picked. The day becomes a game of lottery. I've been here a few times in my life. I assure you none of them were felonious in nature. At least that I can recall. Firstly, parking here is sparse and nonexistent. It's best to be dropped off by someone. Otherwise if you're a juror they will validate your parking ticket. The thing is once you're here it's best not to leave. There's no escape. You're at the mercy of their overpriced cafeteria food and tight quarters seating. Secondly this place is not user friendly. Yes I came here because I received a Jury Summons. Entering through the security check point you can sense the "Misery Loves Company" vibe. The staff operates as though all humanity has left them. For example I asked a guard simply where the Central Jury was located. They responded in a language that even with subtitles could not be decoded. There is an electronic directory but someone neglected to plug it in. I followed someone who was as lost as me. A line snaking around the corridor with a sea of people assured me I was in the right place. You are checked in with your mailed summons. Then you are seated. As I was seated I could hear the constant sounds of sneezing and coughing up God knows what. As luck had it I sat next to a biker who tried to use a prior conviction to get an exemption but to no avail. A bailiff calls out names at random to fill panels or potential jurors. In between waiting they offer what appears to be stand up comedy, I suppose to bring a levity to the day. And then a call for seventy five people. Two groups of forty people. Everybody looks at their summons card. Am I next? It's like a lottery or a draft. When someone's name is called you can see everyone looking intently. Followed by that walk. The changing of demeanor. From elation to doom. Your once supposed early release time is now taken off the table. Your expected dismissal time of 1:30 pm is now 5pm or later. I guess for me the one star reflects: poor signage, unhelpful staff and miscommunication throughout the process. At 11:30 am we were all supposed to have a break. Someone didn't come in until closer to 12pm to dismiss us. Not that I was going anywhere. Potential jurors came down and were sent back to their courts. Even though they were told to return to the Central Jury Room. It's all a big mess. It really needs to give people the option to meet using Zoom. I imagine the same production day after day pushes everybody to the point of anesthetitzation. All the TV shows and films that glamorize the judicial process should be eradicated. At its base it is tedious, time consuming and above all boring. By 2pm. I saw people in the almost empty room asleep in their chairs. I must tell you I wasn't picked. Every person in the row I was seated in earlier were chosen Including the biker. I wasn't expecting to be greeted as a tourist in Acapulco with a pina colada. However it needs to change the way it interacts with everyone particularly citizens. It's three years before I am eligible to be a jury. Hopefully A.I. technology would've progressed by then so I can have my likeness, in my place. Poor thing will get picked probably. read more

I was out trying to renew my passport as the post office appointments were pretty far out. I attempted to do all my research before heading to the courthouse. I don't get down that way often so I ended up paying more for parking than I desired but it's a learning experience. So, unlike the city where I'm from, the court house isn't really one place or two places with significant distance apart. I ended up at a criminal courthouse only to find out I was at the wrong building. Thankfully, it was a beautiful day and the walk to the right building was quick. No one was in line and I got out pretty quickly. The worker was friendly and even let me take more than one picture (it's the little things like looking halfway pretty on your license or passport photo, that count). If you decide to renew or obtain a passport, they do have photo capabilities for passports so you don't have to bring your photos or worry if they're right or not. I wasn't picked today but I spent 6 hours doing my duty. Lots of restrooms, everything is clean. Everyone was friendly. Jury summons was light and the employees explaining everything were humorous. I waited until 1130 to get called to a panel just to be told we could go home! That was awesome, but the second I walked outside and sat down to wait for my ride, a Jehovah witness came up to me and would not leave me alone no matter how many times I told him I wasn't interested in converting/religion nor did I want to talk to anyone. If you leave your jury duty, beware of the creepy man who tries to shove his Bible down your throat. He was so weird he followed me to my Lyft... Getting a jury summons comes with mixed emotions, it messes with the flow of your life. I can tell you as a person who has health issues that everyone from the screening area was friendly. The staff inside the central jury area have the patience of saints. I listened as each one answered questions after questions only to repeat the answers several times. The speakers added humor into the day, and the judge we had shared why serving can be inconvenient and why it was only a small thing in the grand scheme of things. The cafeteria food is okay. It will fill you up. The guys at the grill were a lively bunch. Overall, jury duty was made alot easier by the staff in the courthouse. read more

Well you guessed it, I'm here to serve my wonderful state and city. The signage in the building helped me find where I needed to be. Also, staff had been very welcoming and mindful that this day is tough, but we were shown gratitude for being here. If you happen to win the lottery of serving the county through jury duty, then here are a few tips to help you through the process. Try to park in the Bexar County Parking Garage off of Flores. It is the only garage that offers validated parking of $2 for the day. Anywhere else you are on your own. I recommend arriving early, at 7:30 AM it was already filling up. The garage is just across the street from the courthouse, and the city put in an awesome diagonal crosswalk so you only have to cross once. Construction seems to be finished, and the entrance is through the Cadena Reeves justice center. There is a metal detector, but it moves quickly. Walk past the elevators and go through the doors to the outside. Head down the outdoor stairs into the basement and there resides the glorious jury holding tank. Make sure the bottom portion of the jury summons paperwork is filled out, otherwise you will be scrambling with tons of other people trying to fill out the document and get inside. They will then hand you a laminated description of what it entails to be a juror and a badge to wear for the day. Now, I was surprised to see that the SA Library has a set up inside of the jury holding tank. It's a bibliotech and they even have free e-readers to rent in case you forgot to bring something to read. They also offer free wifi, and I never had problems with it dropping. There are plugs all over the space to charge computers/cell phones. The issue for me was cell service. Since it is a basement I was on roaming the whole time. I had to go out into the courtyard to be able to text. In between waiting and selection times, there are two TV rooms, a cafeteria and the aforementioned courtyard. In any of these spaces they have speakers where they will announce if you have to go back into the holding tank. The cafeteria has a hot kitchen with breakfast in the AM and sandwich type stuff in the PM. There are tons of drink cases and plenty of coffee selections as well. They take debit cards, but I think there is a minimum charge so it's a lot easier to have cash. I also saw employees of the courthouse microwaving their lunches, so that is an option as well. There is an SACU ATM close to the doors that go out to the courtyard, but I didn't check to see what the rate was. The first day of jury duty pays a fabulous $6, which can be donated to Child Welfare services. There are forms right at the front where you can opt for the $$ to go to this cause. Also, do NOT forget to have your parking garage ticket validated. If not the garage charges $10 instead of $2. read more

They make it as comfortable as possible for Bexar County citizens to do their Civic Duty here at the Central Jury Room... There's a Bibliotech: The Bexar County Digital Library within, where you can register for free, and check out Kindles etc with digital books, and availability of not just books, but also a ton of other apps and free content, like language learning, in addition to the NYTimes Bestseller List etc (supercool program, with other locations throughout the city - I can see myself using it afterwards!). Comfortable temp in the room itself and comfortable chairs, but you're also free to roam around a bit... Cafeteria across the hall (gas station set up with snacks, water, and dinner hot food... Smells funky though. ProTip: Bring Your Own. Don't be Christine.) I'm really digging this courtyard! Nice way to spend a beautiful day! Packing list: Cardigan/hoodie - it tends toward the chilly. Book (they advise against newspapers, though. Allowed, but not encouraged) Charging cord for your devices, but also a **back-up battery, or cordless charger** - there are electrical outlets, but not enough, and they're awkwardly placed. Headphones Water Bottle Snackage Patience (Edited to add...) Also bring a fresh shirt, for when you hit up the Señor Softee ice cream truck parked at Main Plaza and immediately drip it all over the front of the cute top you arrived to the Central Jury Room wearing. PROS: great exterior building. Nicely centered ..! Great artifacts on the inside, and decent staff. CONS: Nobody really wants to be at "the courthouse". It's most often not for a good reason (except weddings...)parking ticket, divorce, child custody and support ... etc. That being said, there are more things I despise about this money pit. Parking..... there are scams when it says "Public Parking" and one has a Legion of Merit DV license plate, (all public parking is free) and you get slapped with a $38.00 phony charge from a third party company with no phone number and a P.O Box address... rubbed me the wrong way. Misrepresented themselves with their sign... Can't find a judge to rule on a case that was set for trial...??? Really...? Court reset a few days later. Inconvenient for a father trying to get visitation for his daughter, while he serves our country in the USAF...and only gets ten days off. So he lost 3 precious days. Then the ruling was mediocre. Whatever. Now.... my sticking point. For those of us allergic to mold, please.... fix it. You have a leak in that magnificent building of yours. If you're into awesome architecture, then our Bexar County Court House is a must-see for any enthusiast. Forget about what's going on in all of those court rooms, focus on the craftsmanship and design that you don't see in any modern buildings anymore. As you walk the hallways, look at the hand carved railings and facades on each floor. Take the stairs, forget the elevator, trust me, it's much more rewarding. I've been called for jury duty 3 times now and every time I'm excited to go back just so I can walk around and admire the beauty of this magnificent building. Had jury duty today and just wanted to let people know about COVID precautions taken at the courthouse. During the zoom pre jury process they show you a video that indicates wearing a mask is a requirement upon entering the courthouse with distancing recommended. Guess what-more than half of my panel were maskless and we all were told to sit next to each other on the benches in the courtroom. If you don't care- feel free to ignore this post. But I, for one, am continuing with precautions as positivity rates are on the rise. read more

Jury Duty: Get here early for $2 parking!!!! Get here really early in case you forgot there's a selfie stick in your bag, it set off the metal detector, and now you have to run all the way back to your car to store your lethal weapon of a selfie stick...Also, watch where you park, you don't want to be that person they call out in front of everyone to move their car for parking in the judge's parking spot... no that wasn't me. Don't forget your parking stub for validation and your jury summons in the car! There's wifi, plenty of outlets, vending machines that only take cash, and a small cafeteria that has a $3 credit card minimum. Plan according it may be awhile. Monday's are the busiest days, most cases start Mondays from what they told us. Also, there was over 500 people there for jury duty and there wasn't always room for everyone to sit. What Bexar County Court House lacks in inexpensive parking and directional signage, it certainly makes up for in excellent people watching. We had a terrible time trying to find the marriage license place (we walked aimlessly, even after getting directions from employees), but once we did, it was a quick and painless process (although not necessarily friendly.) My suggestion? Bring your best "don't fuck with me" face and get in and out as quick as you can. read more

Park in garage at 211 S. Flores as jury summons informs you. The garage will probably fill up, so get there early if you can. Oh and pay attention to left turns...those are for special access only on most if not all parking levels. Take diagonal crosswalk across street and get in line with others to go through security/metal detector. If you forgot a bottle opener or something potentially weapon-y in your bag/wallet, you'll have to run it back to your car if you don't wanna give it up. The main juror room is downstairs..this is where you'll turn in the questionnaire on the bottom half of your jury summons, get your parking ticket validated, and get your marching orders. Everyone meets in the main room to get briefed. If you want to be excused or have your service postponed for a vacation or something, they'll direct you where to go. There's a machine where you can pay your parking ticket (after validation) so you can get out of the garage faster when you're released for the day. We were split into groups: Your name will be called and you'll be given a number and asked to stay in that order. Then you'll be moved somewhere where you'll stand around clogging hallways and doorways while waiting for further instruction. I loved my jury duty experience: our judge gave us a briefing regarding how the law works - what we'd be ask to uphold as jurors if selected - that, and the infinitely interesting complete Democracy of the whole experience: people from all walks are called to serve or are milling about the courthouse. I was a little sad not to have been selected to continue my exploration of our legal system in real life (as a juror instead of a defendant - the way I'd much prefer....). One more tip: when leaving the garage after dismissal, I believe the right lane must turn right...I ended up taking a little scenic detour thru downtown as a result. read more

Look, there has to be a better way to accomplish jury duty than locking 500 people a day into a gigantic room and playing "wait here" for 8 hours. We have technology now. Do we really need to waste three-quarters of a million dollars in lost productivity to pick a DUI jury? On the upside, at least there is a cafeteria and wifi. The wifi is spotty and so is the food. Oh, make sure that you bring your parking receipt to get it validated, but only on the first day of service. After that, you are on your own. They will pay you $36 a day after the first day, but take $10 of it back for parking. read more

We've got a beautiful, historic courthouse here in Bexar County! This building shows off some wonderful Romanesque style built in red Texas granite with some limestone. This place is amazing. They don't build 'em like this anymore. Once you get past the inconvenience of the security upon entering the building, it turns into a hustling, bustling beehive of activity. I have served on juries here, and I do have to admit, it is fun to people watch down here, or listen in on some case going on. If you've been hanging out in Main Square and are in need of some air conditioning, this is a welcome respite from the heat. The parking here is easy, right caddycorner across the street. It's fun that regular jaywalking rules don't apply, and you can go running diagonally through the intersection! Try it! The building is a bit on the old side, but it's really neat with how it's laid out, and the architectural details are really nice. It was built in 1896, and it kind of shows it. The exterior has two towers, one of which is seven stories tall, capped with a bee-hive looking spire. The architect was James Riely Gordon, who built a whole bunch of courthouses across Texas. I try not to come down here often. If you're seated in the defendant's chair in this building, I'd give it one star. read more

What can I say? Went here for emotional support for an individual of whom I will respect their privacy and not mention anything of. As my fabulous former SA Yelp CM Gloria said, it's a great place to people watch. So many different people, with... so many different problems. Not really a place I wanted to stay longer than I had to. It was truly a get in, and get out asap situation. I failed to notice any of the pretty architecture mentioned in other reviews. Wish the courthouse had a better parking system. Still on the cheap side, but still peeved I had to fork over $4 to a rude parking attendant. Love San Antonio; DREAD THIS PLACE! I recently filed for an assumed name license online, printed the application and mailed it in. I quickly found out how good these guys are at coming up with fees - seriously the Bexar County Court House should consider starting an airline! They make you pay for a notary, they make you pay a filing fee and the filing fee DOES NOT include a copy of your business license! WTF. On top of that if you ever try to call this place, have a good HOUR set aside to be transferred around, wait on hold and hear about every phone extension for every part of the City of San Antonio's departments. The first lady I spoke with pretended she couldn't hear me and hung up on me. So I was real primed and ready for the 2nd person I talked to. This is something that could be avoided if they would just be clearer online about the fact that your business registration fee does not include a copy of your actual business certificate. Instead, it mentions that nowhere and talks about how much "additional copies" are, which seems to imply that it comes with at least one? Your phone system needs a makeover and your staff needs to be more knowledgeable; God forbid you ask a dumb question like "what all do you need for me to obtain a copy of my business certificate?" and they reply "do you mind if I place you on hold?" (sure it's only the sixth time what's one more right?) read more

When I went for jury duty they got mad at me for exercising on our break and on top of that they made me wait all day. I was never selected because I think they discriminated against me for wearing bright blue lip stain. Regardless of their intentions I was still a human with exercising capabilities and needed to get the blood flowing because they keep that room super cold. As a tourist, this building along with it's fountain is eye catching from right across the Historical Main Plaza. It stands to be the Bexar Courthouse of the fourth largest County in Texas and the 19th largest County nationally. Tips for Jury Duty: 1. Park at their garage...211 S Flores. Bring your parking ticket because they validate and you'll end up paying $2 only. But be early, by 7:35...I parked on the roof, there were so many people. 2. Cross walk works...once you cross, you can use the first entrance you see at the front if the building. No one tells you this so many of us were lost. 3. You will have to go through metal detectors here. Do what they say. They are helpful. 4. Walk straight through the building, you'll walk through some doors that take you outside again and keep walking to next building. Again, no one told us this so I asked the metal detector guys. 5. You'll walk down some stairs...and you are there. 6. They say they have wifi but I couldn't get it to work, plus texting did not work either, probably because you are in a basement plus courthouse. 7. At the parking garage, there's a machine next to the elevator where you can pay and then just drive through lane 4...if you are worried about the traffic getting out of the garage. It was a Monday...so I'd say 900 people were there...standing room only. But we made it through the day! Good luck. read more

Louis Jensen was amazing!!!! My now husband, Kai and I were planning a "secret wedding" and thought we'd just do it at the courthouse. Sitting down Sunday night, we pulled the courthouse number off the internet, but then came across the website for Louis. We were immediately interested. Kai called him Monday morning to see his availability, as we were hoping for a Friday evening wedding. Louis was able to accommodate our request. But we didn't have any venue in mind, as this was a spur of the moment decision. Louis was awesome, he picked the perfect venue. He got us so exited about the wedding that we invited our close friends and family...so no more secret wedding! The evening of the ceremony he was on time and very thorough. Louis surprised us and included my mom, Kai's kids and sister in the ceremony, it was so beautiful.
