I recently wanted to have some alterations made to a few high quality suits. Hemming is one thing that I'd let most tailors take care of - although I've had some disappointing experiences even in that department - but when it comes to taking in jackets I wouldn't want to deliver clothing that I care about to just any dry cleaner. Actually, I wouldn't want to deliver it to a dry cleaner at all...With that in mind I set about to find a decent place for alterations and after a few searches I stumbled across Bhambi's. I only have good things to say about the expertise and staff at Bhambi's. If you care for your suits, bring them here for alterations. They are a bit expensive, but it's a job very well done...and you always feel welcome when you step inside. Alterations are guaranteed for the next few months, so if you're not entirely satisfied you just bring it back and ask them to change it. I am no authority on their tailor made suits (they apparently run from $1,800 and up!) so I can't comment on that part of their business. read more

Talk about LUX, this place is totally swank. It was recommended to me by a friend when I needed a tailor to make some modifications to a very expensive jacket I bought. I didn't want to trust this to just anyone, so I took it to Bhambi's. They quickly fitted me and had the coat altered in a week. It was $70 to have sleeves let out and a lining extension added to the coat. I think that might be on the pricey side, but I didn't care. I needed this coat taken care of by the best, so that's what I did. I would feel secure leaving my most prized clothing in their hands. A great tailor, hands down. read more

Thoroughly impressed with Bhambi's. Certainly as good as the custom clothier industry gets. The since-1968-father-and-son brand name and respectable clientele base (celebrities, top executives, politicians) speak volumes to this shop's quality. It pays to look nice, and I looked no further than Bhambi's to revamp my professional wardrobe. The timelessly classic wood-floor tailor room, vast selection of fabrics and customizations are unparalleled. You walk into the shop knowing things will turn out great. Albeit the turnaround being a bit slow (approx. a month), it is absolutely worth the wait. The attention to detail I saw with my dress shirts left me in awe. Take a look at the immediate sample work around the shop, you'll know what i mean. Also, Harry is a gentleman. Very knowledgable of his craft and personable to clients. I've had suits made by Harry and Lal since around 2005 or 2006. Fantastic quality, down to the last detail. Incredible selection of fabrics. Their staff is lovely. I'm picky about fit and they work with me until I am 100 percent happy. One time, Harry sensed I was not happy and offered to completely remake the jacket (that wasn't necessary)...the point is that they want their customers to be really happy with the suits they make. Do yourself a favor and try having a suit made at Bhambi...it won't be your last. read more

I had my wedding dress altered here, and it came out looking absolutely perfect even though the fabric was a smooth white silk that would have showed every error. It was a relatively small job for them, and they nonetheless made me feel like a valued customer. I found the (not so cheap) price reasonable given the quality of their work. If I'm ever feeling insane enough to get married again, I'll go back to Bhambi for the alterations! read more

I've been coming to Bhambi's a long time for alterations and suits and I'm never disappointed. They do great work and make me feel like family. Not too long ago, I went through a period where I had a bunch of business trips upcoming. A few of my older suits badly needed updating. I had lost some weight so the alterations that they were able to do on my 2 suits were crucial. They worked with me to get the specs just right. After the alterations were complete and I tried on the suits, the fit felt amazing. I was shocked that the could make the suit feel so new but not shocked at the quality of the work. I received so many compliments from my business partners about how the suits fit on me. I loved it! I would definitely recommend this shop. They know their stuff and are top notch. read more

Absolutely fantastic! Was in NYC for a couple of meetings, seam of my trousers gave out, hotel concierge recommended Bhambi to fix the seam. Wasn't really sure what to expect, but hiked over to Bhambi. When i arrived was immediately impressed with the displays of fabrics and suits, staff was incredibly accommodating and friendly well beyond expectations, and best of all the tailor fixed the trousers while I waited. They make beautiful custom suits for my husband with the most precise measurements. Very meticulous. You won't find better quality.

Not worth the price. Hemmed two pairs of my trousers, no better than my local dry cleaner would have done, for 2 1/2 times the price. Not a professional job. When I questioned the tailor, he said "Oh we only use tape if the client asks for it. I use it on my own trousers of course.", and lifted his cuff to show me a properly hemmed trouser. No offer for a partial refund and too late to do it over. Apparently they take checks and cash only. NO credit cards. read more

From my experience, Bhambi's is highly overrated...and by such a small sample size of reviewers here. The low number of meritorious reviews thus far for this crock of a tailoring shop--in our business and fashion mecca, no less--should raise a red flag of suspicion. Statistically speaking (for those prospective customers out there who regularly work with "figures"), 9 total reviews do not provide enough appraisals from which to draw any significant predictive validity. One would think that such a chop shop that allegedly has received countless customers referred by Barney's, as one reviewer asserts, would have commanded a much higher turnout of supportive reviewers, if Bhambi's work had been so highly and widely regarded. Initially, I was turned off by some very personally intrusive, inappropriate comments made and questions posed to me by the younger Harry Bhambi, himself, during a preliminary fitting of my cashmere topcoat. He bluntly asked my age, outright, which I thought was very personal and unprofessional, especially with other customers present in his intimate boutique setting. He proceeded to say almost flirtatiously (while smirking) that I looked young for my age, having a "baby face" (possibly a Title VII violation in today's workplace). He then pointed out that I didn't wear a wedding ring and chose to focus on that topic for an uncomfortably long while. I'm actually recently widowed, but I didn't divulge that info as he kept probing. He also pressed me for information regarding my type of employment, after which he proceeded to ask me for my professional opinions regarding specific types of investments...as if trying to test my credentials and to get me to breach ethical fiduciary responsibility. At one point, he rudely questioned, "You can't afford a gym," when I discussed how I used to be even more muscular than I am now, almost to the bodybuilding competition level of development. I should not have been put in such an awkward position to firmly correct his rude, unprofessional commentary and questioning, as I did quite tersely. C'mon, how many men with 100% fine quality cashmere topcoats in Manhattan (or anywhere, for that matter) wouldn't be able to afford a gym membership? The replacement cost of the coat would more than pay for a year's membership at an elite health club in this city. If Harry had belonged to a gym, himself, then he would have been able to answer his own arrogant question. Furthermore, he seemed completely ignorant of the British Royal Family historical significance of the fine Aquascutum brand of the sport jacket that I courageously had one of his employees take in through the sides, in order to accentuate my "V"-tapered lats, broad shoulders, and slim waist. I actually heard one of his customers elucidate to him the historical royal significance of that brand. Since Bhambi and his profoundly "experienced" employees seem so blatantly unfamiliar with Aquascutum, would any of you risk overpaying him to whip up a custom-tailored suit or to entrust him with altering an irreplaceable, premium brand garment? His standard of care should be much higher, in my legal opinion. His completion time is not fast, either. It took 10 business days for one of his employees to do a few simple, uncomplicated suit alterations that would have taken half of the time elsewhere and for nearly half of the price. There were some other blatant errors of tailoring professionalism that I could elaborate upon, but I believe more than enough has been said, "Res ipsa loquitur." In fact, the initial first-time customer "tester suits" that I presented to Bhambi's (2 premium brand name suits and the premium Aquascutum sport jacket) did not receive a gentleman's passing "C" grade, either in professional attention to detail or to me, the customer. Thus, I assigned only 2/5 stars (40%) for a grade "D" experience (on an Ivy League curve), since the stitching was barely adequate and grossly overpriced for what was produced, and for the lack of professionalism presented on the two occasions I visited his shop. Harry does not seem to proof the work that leaves his business, otherwise I would not have been inconvenienced to return an item for additional repair of damage that seemed to have occurred while previous alteration work had been performed on it by one of his other tailors. Conceivably, I could have received better and quicker service and more professional alterations and attention to detail from my neighborhood dry cleaner. Don't let the hardwood wainscoting or high rent address sucker you into thinking you're in good tailoring hands! It's all a sham, seemingly. Shame on Harry Bhambi! "Caveat emptor," fellow Yelpers. There are other tailors in Manhattan located in less glam boutique settings that are much more competent, professional, and deserving of your business. Bhambi's Custom Clothiers is hands down one of the best places in the city to have a suit or shirts made. They offer excellent service, a wide variety of fabrics and make the best quality clothing. Their prices are very reasonable (i.e., comparable to high-end manufactured clothes) but their fit, finish and overall quality are head and shoulders above. OK. So after reading a whole bunch of very positive reviews, I took 4 new and expensive suits (outside tailoring) to get fixed here, work mainly consisting of: taking in waist, taking in sides of jacket, lowering collar, and shortening sleeves. The bill was around $700. Nice surprise that they didn't ask for payment upfront. Fast forward. They called me 2 weeks later, as promised. I went in to try on the suits. TERRIBLE. The pants were too tight, the jackets were taken in but they didn't set the sleeves properly so there was a lot of pulling around the armpits. Also, they did not replace the stitching for the button holes (not working) on the sleeves after they shortened them. Very shoddy. No, I am not talking about "not perfect" for a supposedly excellent tailor - I mean terrible even for a seamstress you might find at a neighborhood cleaner (good at simple alterations). Now, this place charges a lot of money based on their reputation, but when you play in the big leagues and charge big league prices, the consumer naturally expects more. In other words, when you go to Burger King and pay $12 for your meal, you are a lot less upset that it tasted bad than when you go to a fancy restaurant and pay for a $150 meal. That's why I am giving them 1 star. If I had gone to a dry cleaner and paid much less, I would give 2 stars. Anyway, like any good shop, they acknowledged the problem (after 5 minutes of "nothing is wrong" and "you have to press it") and they offered to fix it. Now, regardless of the outcome, I was hoping by going to an "elite" tailor, I would avoid the time and headache related to do-overs. Time is money, right? Fast forward. They called me a couple of weeks later and I went in to try on the suits. Better, but still not what you would expect from an elite tailor. I give their final work product a B-, but since they are an elite shop charging elite prices, I must take them down to a C-. To this day, the suits do not fit well - I suppose I was just worn down by the process and at some point, I will get the suits fixed there or elsewhere (more likely). It is worth noting that my outside alterations were an [expensive] audition - I was at the time in the market for a custom suit. Needless to say, I did not buy a $2,100 suit from them. Most custom suits require multiple fittings and I had absolutely zero confidence in their ability to detect nuances and execute the proper alterations - the little details which make your suit cry out "Custom Made". I did end up buying a custom suit elsewhere, but that's a story for another review... But I will tell you, they are true masters of their craft, and make these guys look like the neighborhood seamstress. read more
