I took a dress with a crooked hem in to be checked, straightened and hemmed with a roll hem. I had already pinned it on myself at home but wanted it to be checked by a trained eye. The appropriate way to hem a crooked dress is to measure up from the floor by yardstick, or use expert eyeballing and pin all around the dress. I sew myself and my grandfather was a tailor but regardless of experience, common sense tells you if you take 3" of fabric off around an already crooked hem, it will yield a crooked result. One of the tailors, who told me I was making his life harder, insisted on taking all my pins out, marking one spot and then said he would measure that three inches up from the original hem all around. I asked him how that would yield a straight hem if the dress is already crooked and he became very angry with me. English is not his first language and he thought I didn't understand him rather than vice-versa. I repeatedly attempted to explain that the dress is crooked to begin with and he raised his voice to me, stated he has 70 years experience, I know nothing, and stormed away and told me he didn't want to work for me and I should go home. So take your chances if you dare. You might get a good result, you might not. If you have any questions or concerns, be prepared to be mistreated. If they can afford to alienate customers, they don't need your money so why should they care about customer satisfaction? That makes them a risky company with which to do business. Finding a good tailor is as important as finding a place to get a hair cut. Every dry cleaner has a tailor, but is hit or miss with skill, technique and pricing. Thank god we found San Remo Tailors Shop. The two guys in the place do great work with very reasonable pricing. Wife had some shirts fitted and at $12 per shirt; amazing work. Perfect fit and very professional job. The service and skill here is old school. Very detailed and finished work. Suits the same. Fitted as requested with that same professional work. The guys work fast with a 4 to 6 day turn around. Not bad for excellent work. I am fortunate I live about a mile away, but I know one thing I would certainly travel here if it took an hour by train. They are closed on Sunday's and they take credit cards, just no AMEX. If you need an item to be tailored like shirts, pants, suits, slacks, jeans, etc. San Remo will be a Home Run for you. They tailored my jumpsuit for my cousins wedding so well. I found them professional, and good humored. They only charged me 50 for the alterations, where the last dress I had altered in the city cost me over 100 for a much simpler hem. The quality of the alteration was very high. The only thing I would say is make sure you call them or find out when they think your garments will be ready. Mine was done with time to spare, but I did not get a call to notify me. These men are PROFESSIONALS, and that's that. Came here one day to have suit pants tailored, the pants originally fit strangely along the leg and were way too long. The gentleman who helped me pinned and made adjustments as I wanted to make sure that it will fit the way that I liked. The whole process took only a few minutes and I was out that door and told to come back in a couple days. A couple days later, came back to try on the pants and they fit EXACTLY as I envisioned. The fit along the leg from the thigh down made me feel like my pants were worth a million bucks. I saw some reviews before coming here and I have to admit I was hesitant, I've brought pants to be altered at different places and never quite got them to fit the way I wanted so I always have some anxiety about trying a new tailor shop. I can't say their quality for anything else besides pants but I'm definitely impressed with their work this first time I've been here, and I will definitely be bringing more pants here in the future. My experience here was exceptional. One of my favorite shirts snagged on something and tore yesterday. I brought my shirt here and within 30 minutes it was good as new. It's super important to have a tailor that can do the small things that way I know they can handle the big ones. I'd definitely recommend them and plan on coming back for additional work. the main reason i came to san remo tailors is due to the old looking front sign stating what they do in alterations and nothing beats the old school tailors . i had two dress jackets and one pair of slacks that needed some major fixing and these guys did the job and the price was right . from jackets , coats , slacks, tuxs, suits, etc, this tailor shop is the place to get the job done right .they also do ladies garments including dresses and gowns and if you need a tux for a formal event they have a good selection for purchase . i may be a bit bias but its the truth , italians are the best tailors without a doubt and just bring something that needs alterations or repairs and i bet you will agree. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE in caps !!! between my friend and I, we spent more than $500 to have our uniforms tailored, most of our things fit well but we had to come back to fix our pants as they didn't have the tapered/skinny fit at the bottom which is what we asked for, one of the guys was immediately over aggressive saying that if we wanted tights, that we should have told him that thats what we wanted... that customers come in asking for the exact numbers taken out and that is all they can do... we told him we are not tailors we do not know numbers but we do know how we would like them fit and to look like. We can only go by our eye and it wasn't what we wanted. One of the 2 guys seemed more willing to work with us but the other guy just continued to make us feel stupid said we had to pay again and questioned if half an inch makes a difference, to which we said yes- that is why we take clothes to a tailor, if not we can just buy clothes off the rack and wear them as they come. I read a review of someone who had this kind of problem with them but we decided to give it a try. DO NOT make the mistake we made, spending over 500 bucks with people who are not willing to work on the details to make the tailoring perfect as it is meant to be. i got a dress that had super long straps. i went to the tailor in the dry cleaners and she said she could not do it... then i proceeded to another 2 places and same thing. i came in this location and this super attentive gentleman told me to come back as his partner would help me out possibly. so i came back, an to my bliss, his co worker said he would take the challenge and fix my straps. now so you understand a bit of my predicament, the dress has beads all over the straps and most tailors wont want to touch it because of the possibility to destroy the entire thing. however here they are so confident on their skills that there was no hesitation, and i loved also the fact that they are not expensive, they are super fair on pricing, attentive and super nice. overall i found that this business did a great job and i will definitely come back read more

This is the only good tailor shop in Astoria. I've gotten many things done by these guys and I've never had a problem. They are up with the trends, they do their work correctly, and it's reasonably priced. I've gotten custom suits re-fitted here and was very nervous bc of the cost of the suit, but they did the right thing and the job was great. 5 stars from me is a feat. This 80-(70?)-year-old Italian duo takes the pants. I have been bringing about two outfits a month here over during the six months I've lived in Astoria. Everything has come back to me with an amazing fit. The stuff I bring isn't simple like a pant hem or the like. I ask them to redefine the waist on dresses and skirts, make jacket sleeves slimmer, refashion dress backs. Pretty tough to fit me into the tight seams I'm asking for, and they do it. One tailor mostly works on men's clothes while the other specializes in women's. They both have their various tailoring certifications informatively if not proudly placed around the shop. Prices are reasonable. They quote you on individual items, and will inform you if they think the cost of the requested work isn't worth it. They do accept credit cards, but charge a fee. As for past reviewer Manny R's 2008 comment: I allow for two 80ish-looking tailors a bit of snappiness after decades in the fashion business. Don't we like our fashion guys to have a pointed personality? I find both generally pleasant, with the men's tailor (whose name I forget) maybe a bit more gruff than the women's. They both talk about their trips to Italy (they close for about 3 weeks in the summer and I think again in the winter). And the women's tailor will laugh and tease me about having my dresses so tight -- "if you've got the body, well flaunt it, yes?" he will say. I'll keep going back. read more

Don't go there! I've been there twice. The first time I tailored 4 pair or pants for a certain price and the work they did was not bad but also not great. 4 months later I went back to tailor 5 more pants and the price they wanted to charge me was more than double from the first time. I asked them why and they said that that was the price for everyone, which is not true because I paid much less the first time. Their pricing is very incosistent. They were also very rude. They told me to not bring the pants back I decide to not tailor them for that price. A waste of time and the worst experience ever!! read more

Prior to having work done, the owner laughed cavalierly when I asked if they altered men's suits, stating they MAKE custom tailored suits, adding the actual exorbitant cost they charge for a tailored suit, and sarcastically asking if I was going to get a full tailored suit made. I should have done an about-face at that point, but I ventured on. Long story short, they fixed one problem on a high end suit jacket...it wrinkled a bit on the back... and created a new one...it now wrinkles on the shoulders!...ta-dah! When I brought it to their attention, they explained that it was caused by the way I stand. When this didn't prove true when I tried on one of the store jackets, it changed to the cause being men's shoulder bones!... I guess I'm a hunchback and never noticed? Then it was ALL jackets having this problem. Finally that my jacket was in this condition all along, they just never mentioned it, nor fixed it, nor would entertain the idea of fixing now! Wow. Ookay. Had it needed this work, which it didn't prior to bringing it here, they certainly would have caught it, and I would have paid additionally to have them fix it as part of the work. They stated there was simply NOTHING more that could be done, would not revisit it, and literally walked away, went back to their work and left me standing there at the counter. The other tailor simply stayed in his seat the whole time trying not to make eye contact with me and finally shrugged his shoulders as if to say, "It's out of my hands". Infuriating and Incredible, but what can you do. I paid and took my newly misshapen suit jacket with me. The epitome of arrogance and poor service SR. EDIT: Interestingly enough, I was contacted by another Yelper demanding I take down my review! Nice. After I did not remove it, a raving 5-star review was added to this page and a NEW clone listing was added to Yelp! This sort of thing undermines the very purpose of Yelp, doesn't it? I went there to get my Bridesmaids dress hemmed. The guy marked off the hemming spots with chalk. After I asked how much and he said $65. This seemed like a lot to me so I said I was gonna shop around for a lower price. The guy got visibly angry and said "I want to take the chalk off then" so he took my dress in the back and steamed the chalk spots leaving permanent marks all over, then had the nerve to say I "shouldn't have made him do all this work". This place is praised in many reviews for their high quality alterations and while it appears that they usually do great work, I will not be bringing my business here in the future. I brought in a bridesmaid dress for hemming ($50) and was told it would be ready in two weeks. My boyfriend brought home the dress (Tuesday) and I tried it on when I got home only to realize that the dress was still too long. Initially it was approximately 8 inches too long and after alterations, with shoes on, it is still folding onto the ground about an inch. I called Wednesday morning first thing knowing that I am flying to the wedding on Thursday. I let them know the problem and the man accused me of changing my shoes, a statement that is untrue and verifiable because they measured my heel height when I went in for the fitting. Regardless, he told me to come in that afternoon and they'd work to finish it that evening (yay!). When I arrived he explained that there was an emergency and the man who does the alterations was unavailable, offering no solution or apology. He accused me twice more of changing my shoes and stated several times "this never happened before so I don't know what you did" I did nothing different between the fittings! I pressed him asking if there was anything that could be done or any sort of refund available and he shook his head saying "no there is nothing." There is no time for me to get it fixed before the wedding. I understand that emergencies come up and these things can be unavoidable with small shops, but I believe the customer service left something to be desired and I wish they had done it correctly in the first place. Also this place smells like moth balls so your clothes will have an odor when you get it back. read more

i will never be back to this establishment. i came here last week after reading the positive reviews. i wanted a leather skirt altered to be more snug around my legs. after the tailor pinned the sides, i asked if he could tighten the sides more, and he said not without potentially ruining it - this was after asking him 5-10 times if the material would allow for further alteration. he finally explained that the material wouldn't have a natural curve if he tightened it more, but he insisted he could try it. i did not appreciate the i-can-do-it-but-not-well response so i decided not to pursue alterations & told the tailor as much. he started pulling out all the pins and THROWING them to the floor even though i had NO SHOES on. i asked him to stop because i didn't want to accidentally step on a pin. he told me i would be ok & he continued pulling pins out & throwing them to the floor. never in my life have i seen a tailor react this way. never in my life have i seen a business person react this way to losing a customer who has a legit reason not to pay for a service. i have heard of people getting infections from stepping on nails, & i don't know if stepping on a pin would cause the same problems, but i didn't want to find out. i was honestly scared & appalled. i got dressed as fast but as solely as possible, and left without even putting my coat on even though it was 40 degrees outside just because i wanted to get out that much sooner. also, the store has an undeniable odor that made me almost walk out as soon as i walked in. i do not understand the positive reviews. this man was beyond unprofessional. read more

This shop did an excellent job on a dress I had altered. I thought it may be a difficult job because a big portion of the dress is lace, which cannot be sewed. The tailors were up front about what could and could not be done and they took the time to figure out how to make some alterations that would be a challenge due to the lace. The perfect old school Italian tailor! I bought a very complicated bridesmaid dress in for alteration. It was three levels of fabric and a pretty intensive transformation. They did it in THREE DAYS! The guy was so thorough when going over the alteration with me and had it completed long before anyone had told me to expect it. I brought it in several weeks before the wedding anticipating a slow turnaround. It was a little pricey, but for what I needed done, was appropriate for the complexity and quality of the alteration. I will definitely be going back to get the same dress altered at knee length so I can actually wear it again after the wedding. read more

They also relined a wool coat that I have had a long time and loved but the lining was thin and tearing in certain areas. They do a great job on everything I bring them. I used to work about 100 meters from this place but never noticed that there was a Tailor / Tux shop here. Had to do my jeans alteration and then found out about this place. I went there and the 2 gentlemen there were nice. It looked like an old store and I asked them on how long were they in business. They said 47 YEARS. Now that's something. Obviously they knew what they were doing, so I told them my measurement and how long I wanted it and they wanted to confirm again by measuring up. A yellowed awning, creaky wooden floors, a familiar "attic" smell, and racks filled with suits and styles you haven't seen since that time you were a kid and you remember your dad putting on a velvet blazer, or double-breasted suit to go out with mom. Honestly, I write this review as someone who doesn't want this place to be discovered. It's a little-known gem that has been quietly unnoticed among the bustling stores of Steinway. I'm a little selfish here--I don't want my experience to change. I don't want the hoi polloi, the business of the streets outside, making its way into this time capsule. Behind the counters are two talented European (Italian and Istrian) tailors. They speak softly, while quietly basting, thumping and tacking on their rusted Singer sewing machines. The quality of work they produce is peerless. You tell them what you want--they always say anything is possible if you have the money--and a day or two later, boom, it's ready. A bespoke suit that will add some hop in your strut. I've trusted them with my $1,800 suits (given it needed little work) and I've brought $200 suits (it ended up looking like my more expensive suits). They work magic on these things. Three years, four suits, one tailcoat, two jackets later, I've never been happier with what they've returned to me. My girlfriends have loved the tailoring and the fit, my mom, my sister, my girlfriends' moms, Jesus, strangers have asked me if they could try on my suit jackets. Treat them well and they'll treat your threads even better. Tell them exactly what you want. Ask the price right away. Show them a picture on your mobile phone. Bring your lady in there with you. And listen to them when you get fitted. A+++ to San Remo and the sartorial splendor these two men produce.
