Bike Ex is the BUSINESS. The crew there is VERY helpful and friendly. I always go them for my bike needs(if I have a choice and I'm not stuck somewhere...). The store is kind of a hole in the wall store that you imagine seeing in the Final Fantasy Series and some of the workers look like old messengers and even have messenger names. I think all that adds to this places charm. Also, if you're a hipster and skid every where you go for no freakin' reason, buy tires here. Alright, I want to start off by saying that I have been here before but was discouraged and left. Months later when I found my fixer upper I learned that most tools and small inexpensive items are easily bought at your LBS (local bike shop) So Yelp was very helpful and the this bike shop had good reviews. So I gave it another try with my research and an intend to buy things. The reviews on Yelp were true because I went in again with the intimidation feel but this time although there was a line and the shop is uber small, one of the mechanics asked if I needed help. I said I needed to buy a couple of things such as basic tools. he says ok the desk person will take care of me. The fact that the mechanic ( possibly the owner) acknowledged me because I looked confused was a plus. I knew what I wanted and didn't need a bike assembled or worked on and they were very busy putting bikes together. I counted 4 of them in that small space. Once at the counter i asked her for various parts and she would always have to ask the mechs to clarify what it is and they would always stop what they were doing to point out what item i was looking for that was behind the counter. Every single mech helped her out because they would get back to what they were doing and the next would be free for a second. I ended up bringing in the wheel that I had trouble with to explain things better and have them look at it. They determined I had a cog with a thicker width and needed replacement. i bought locking remover, cog, chain breaker ( just wanted to buy it for future only 6 bux) 2 brake levers, brake cable in housing, and quick release for the front wheel. They clarified how to use all of the items I bought. Overall this place rocks and I have to come back for more things. I really wished they were at a better location with a larger space where you can take your time browsing what you need and want. I felt rushed because a line of 5 people developed behind me so I tried to do it fast. I ended up forgetting the chainwhip and I couldn't finish the job that day. Parking was kinda bad too because its in a downtown housing area. read more

I would first like to say that this place has really great customer service. Though it can become very hectic at times, it still delivers a high quality of customer service. Its a great place for everyone who likes bicycles. Fixie, vintage, mountain, all types of bicyclist come to this store. I think the best quality contained within this store is the ability to borrow tools and fix your own bike. Now that is some trust to your customers. I mean rather then pay 20$ for a flat tire, buy the tube and learn how to fix it on your own for future reference. I enjoy it this store for their materials and service. A 1 minute bike ride from SJSU. Something was wrong with my gears so I stopped by here to see what was wrong. The guy looked at my bike, took it to the work area, and rolled it back to me in a matter of 5 minutes. Didn't even charge me. They have a really, really nice staff. I ended up buying some handlebar tape and a cable lock. On my way out, I noticed I was missing my wheel caps and the lady just gave me a pair for free. This was my first visit to bicycle express. I went in, at the end of the day, to get my front mountain bike wheel bearings and cones replaced. The shop had a line of customers, and all of the shop employees were busy getting work done. I was greeted and was told they'd be with me in a second. No worries. The wheel was inspected, and I was advised to replace the bearings and cones. What stood out for me was that I was given the option to replace the cones with some used cones from their parts bin FREE. That's just an awesome way to recycle and save money at the same time. WINNING I let them know I was in no rush to pick up, just whenever they had time. So the next day, I received a call that my wheel was ready. Dropped by, paid for service, and the wheel was good as new. Lubed and inflated! These guys are awesome and very knowledgeable. Would recommend for your biking needs. read more

Service: 5 stars I had a rack purchased at the store installed as well as a gear adjustment done at a different time. Both times it took less than 1.5 hrs despite me being a walk in and were done well. Gear adjustment cost $10 as did the mounting of the rack, which I think was more than reasonable. Furthermore, everyone was friendly and helpful. Store: 3 Stars It's a small, cramped store, that mostly had Raleigh, Diamond Back, and used bikes from what I could see. There's no air conditioning which can be miserable during the summer and there's not enough room to move around to get a good look at the bikes. Highly recommended if you're in downtown San Jose. read more

This place is great, I won't ever take my bikes anywhere else. What I enjoy about it, is the friendly staff who are nothing but nice and anxious to be of help. they are very knowledgeable and obviously really enjoy what they do. the next best thing. THE PRICE. So so reasonable. they don't try to take advantage and the work is good quality. They really give the bikes a good look over and fix it to be better than expected. the small size has its charm and i like that they are working on the bikes right there and not hidden in a back room. very great business. these guys rock. often i see young kids with bikes in front trying out new things and the owner is so nice about lending his tools out if they wanna tweak something on the bike out front. he says to "just bring it back when ur done" and they always do. read more

Chuck and his crew at Bicycle Express are simply the best, nicest mechanics on the Central Coast. They also offer the best bikes for the money - period. I have time and have gone to many bike shops between Palo Alto (Sunnyvale, Santa Clara) and San Jose (including Good Karma Bikes). In late July, early August, I revisted my favorite shops and went to some new to me to find a nice bike for my daughter to take to UC Davis. In the end, Bicycle Express was where we purchased an upper-end Specialize Hybrid bicycle. Bicycle express actually offered three choices of bikes that fit her (5' 5") that none of bigger shops could. They offered the best prices, way better than Sports Basement, Mike's Bicycles and all the rest. Chuck's has a long history for quality work and fair prices. I was first a customer four years ago when I heard many good things about them. There is a reason his shop surpasses all others on YELP with consistent 4.5 stars. Go there. You won't be disappointed! Bicycle Express has been around ever since I moved to San Jose in 1996. A friend of mine had a great experience and since I just bought a new used bike that needed a new back tire, I decided to check them out as they are downtown nearby where I live. I called to ask about their hours. The gentleman was very professional and positive. I asked about how long service took to get my back tire changed. He said that they would do it then and there. They had a bunch of people but I waited 2 minutes to get someone's attention. He took 10 minutes to change the tire for $9.95. I bought a nice tire pump kit and was done in 15 minutes. The staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend them and am certainly going to return when I need more work done. read more

It resides very close to downtown San Jose which is very convenient. Second reason bicycle express was right for me was due to the immediate service I received, and on such a busy day for this small bicycle shop. Third reason bicycle express was right for me was the price of the new bicycles and accessories - very reasonable and the selection was good. I purchased a Raleigh FT3 and I love it. The bicycle was easy to choose and it was prepared with the accessories I wanted and I was able to ride it home in a very short time. again, the shop was very busy but the owner made time to get the bike ready in a very short time. This place is popular for good reasons. The location is conveniently located right next to SJSU in downtown San Jose. The staff there are knowledgeable and efficient. And most importantly, the prices are very reasonable. I took my bike down there to replace a tube. The store was busy with people going in and out and/or waiting around. All the staff were working on bikes. Nonetheless, I walked up to the counter and asked for help. Yes, I ASKED for help -- because they were busy and there were a lot of people in the store standing around waiting/looking/chatting with friends. It's hard to tell who is waiting for what. So, if you need them to fix your bike or answer your question, I strongly suggest you ASK for help. Stop acting like a princess in a 5-star hotel waiting to be pampered. This is a no nonsense bike shop, they can fix bikes, they cannot read your mind. Anyway, I got a new tube put in, got my brakes adjusted, and was out of there in 8 minutes! All for less than $10 (compared to $16 at the other bike shop in Milpitas). Another satisfied customer! read more

Live nearby so have stopped by many times to pump tires and do some minor fixes. overall staff are nice and friendly. based on past experience and the high rating on Yelp thought it wouldn't be wrong to have my bike assembled at their place. took the bike there in Sat morning and they were quick to do the job so went to get it in the afternoon. after few minutes' ride, I noticed there's some noise from the chain scratching somewhere so took it back. The young guy with long hair was very helpful, took a ride and adjusted it for me. so I tried it again, shortly after I switched the gear, the chain just fell off!! took the bike back again the guy put the bike on the stand and adjusted it for a while. afterwards I just went home. later I rode a longer distance and found that the wheels are not well tuned. so I took it back again. the guy spent some time tuning the wheels. when he brought the bike out he apologized for having me going back again and again. This morning when I tried a even longer ride, I found shifting between gears is clunky and there's even louder scratching noise. When I finally arrived the destination I noticed the inner surface of the crankset is severely scratched and some tops of the teeth were rubbed off. It's sad and disappointing to see a new bike has to undergone such torture. They might have provided excellent service to many others but definitely not in my case. And I don't think I've done anything inappropriate to them to deserve this treatment. read more

These guys are all sorts of nice -- I came in here for a presta valve adapter and they sold it to me, as well as two replacement valve caps, for like two bucks and change. They were really busy and still kind of shifted me to the front of the line since my request was a small and quick one and a lot of the people ahead of me were dropping off bikes for repair. One of the people ahead of me was an woman in her 70's who was getting new brake pads put on her bike and one of the guys working there kept telling her that he was going to put hot pink ones on for her, but she didn't get the joke and got all indignant about it. I admired the staff's persistence in the pursuit of good humor even if the old lady didn't. As an added bonus, one of the guys who works there sounds almost exactly like Tommy Chong when he talks and that makes every shopping experience better. Five stars for this place -- even though I've spent less than three American dollars in their store, their attitude made it worthwhile and I'll definitely be coming back here for repairs and replacement parts and to see if I can get the Chong guy to say "Dave's not here, man" for me. read more

We've only used their tune up services but they didn't make us change all the chains and cables etc which another shop said we'd need. Did a good job with the tune up and saved us a few bucks over the other stores hefty estimate for same work. We also tried a couple of women's bike but weren't comfortable riding or buying right away. Still no pressure or aggression from sales person. Good business. read more

Tiny shop, with every available inch packed full of bikes and parts. Very nice/helpful staff. I haven't ridden for over 10 years, and was looking for a cheap around-town bike to get back into it. The owner found a used bike with a bent rim/dodgy tubes/etc, and had it in riding shape in less than an hour. Even showed me how to get the wheel off so I could fit it in my car. Cost: more than craigslist, but worth it. My bike cost $85 and was in great shape; looking around the shop, some of the fancier bikes were $400-500. Prices for accessories were reasonable. I'll be going back for anything I need. Parking's pretty tough to find; either bring lots of change for the meters, or cough up $8 to park at the university two blocks away. read more

I have come to this place twice to get some work done on my commuter bike. they are really nice with a family run atmosphere, i trust the staff to be honest and reasonable, the owner recommended another bike shop to do a professional bike fitting because they had not been trained to use the equipment yet but i trust them and am planning on waiting until they are ready to do a fitting. they always have a lot of techs available to help with any last minute tire changes or chain installs. Been coming here for years. I trust them for services - tune ups, brake lines, installations, anything really. A couple months back, one of the guys was able to find out why my back tire was chronically going flat - by finding a near microscopic piece of metal in my tire. Fixed the problem for the cost is a tube. Yesterday, after expressing it was my first time taping my handle bars, technician handed me a used roll of tape and encouraged me to practice. Great place with very affordable options in tyres and other spare parts. They have deals on apparels on certain days as well. I was looking for a trainer Tyre for my bike to be mounted on an indoor trainer, for working out in the winter. I got a Tyre here for 15$ and 6$ installation fee.
