Small family run shop. MY FAV LBS (local bike shop). Prices are reasonable. They have a small inventory of stuff, just basic gear. Friendly, reliable, not bullshit. I like the fact that they don't push stuff that you don't need. No high end bikes, mostly cruisers and hybrids. They carry Raleigh, mongoose and Dahons. Don't expect fast service. They only have 1 or 2 people working on a bike at a time. If you need stuff done to your bike, drop it off then head over to Downtown SJ for a meal or a movie. I had a junky walmart bike, and they owrked on it without a sneer. I like that. Now that I've upgraded to proper road and mtb's, I still go there for their service. read more

Seemed like they had no time for me (they were super busy), but as soon as I had thought that a lady behind the counter asked me how she could help. I explained to her that my tire wouldn't hold any air. She told me that unfortunately they don't patch tubes anymore. They could sell me a patch kit or they could change the tube for $5 parts + $5 labor. I had class so I chose the latter. Seriously, it seemed like they were too busy for me but they had me out of there in like less than 10 minutes. A friendly and somewhat scruffy looking gentleman named Eric was of great help to me. I bought my single speed Raleigh at Bicycle Express about six months ago. I walked into the small bike shop, and as I was checking out the inventory a worker came over and provided excellent insight based on what I told him I was looking for. He pulled the perfect bike--and after riding it around for a moment, I had to make the purchase. I feel that Bicycle Express met the three major objectives of a solid business 1) a quality product 2) EXCELLENT customer service 3) reasonable prices. I should mention that after purchasing the bike, the team did a detailed tune-up. I now have a reliable bike that I love to ride--and a bike shop I can take it to for maintenance and repairs. I don't like fixing of maintaining my own bike because I feel like I always mess something up. So when I got a flat on my rear tire, I looked around for somewhere I could get my tube patched since I've lost contact with the gearheads that normally fix this stuff for me. Called around. This place doesn't mess around with patches, but they replace the tube for 5 dollars! That's a bargain! Labor is 5 dollars too though, but still im happy to pay to have an expert do this for me. After walking around for 25 minutes, the bike was ready. I ended up buying a bell, front light, and a rear light to replace my old gear. What was great was the guy that helped me out listened to me and what I was looking for. When you hear "then you don't want this one. This other one here is what you want then," you feel like they aren't just trying to sell you something just for the sale. Highly recommend. read more

I took my bicycle to Bill Jr at Hyland and he said I had to replace the brakes, cable, (bracket?)... Anyhoo, they couldn't tell me what was wrong with it. Wait, a bicycle shop that doesn't know what's wrong with a bicycle??? A tune-up for $150??? I took it to Bicycle Express. I spoke to a guy name "Chuck." Chuck took 5 seconds and BOOM.......fixed a "loose" bolt. They also quoted me $35 for a tune-up. I KNEW that Hyland was trying to sucker me in buying stuff I didn't need. - I am forever in Bicycle Expresses debt because they are "real" bicycle people. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite bike shop ever! The staff is always friendly. It is a very small store, and you are always greeted and asked how you can be helped. They are the only bike store I know to have both new and used products. They are extremely knowledgeable, from fixed gears to mountain bikes to helmets, they know it all and they are happy to help you find the best for your biking experience, and your buck. Plus, they always pump up my tires for free when I am riding downtown. read more

The shop is a bit small and hard to browse around because of all the merchandise everywhere, but the staff are generally really nice and helpful. I went in last week to get bicycle helmets for me and my husband--they didn't have any above a size small in the store at the time, but one of the men who works there (really tall guy) offered to zip over to their storage locker a couple streets away and pick up a few more for us to try on and check out. When he came back and two of them fit, he gave us a few bucks off the helmets as a thank you for waiting, which was a kind gesture. It can be a little hectic inside with people in and out looking for parts and sometimes working on bikes inside or outside the shop, which I find a little hard to handle, especially because I only recently started cycling and I'm a little clueless about things still. However, the great customer service makes up for the slightly chaotic nature of the place. read more

I love this place. They have very friendly people working there that will help with anything. I was building a custom fixie with a vintage nishiki road bike frame and they helped me out from head to toe. All the parts are super cheap and the install is such a good deal. The place itself is very small but its not a big deal. The environment is why I love the place. Its a very family oriented place with many students hanging around. Fantastic bike shop. Rich was really helpful in diagnosing the issue with the bike, turned everything around very quickly and was impeccably honest (even though I authorized him to change both the cassette and the bottom bracket when he found out that it was only the bottom bracket that had the problem he called me, then went through the trouble of taking off the cassette he had already installed when I told him I didn't want it). This a great place to get fast repairs. I called to gat an appointment and they said to bring it by that day. They quickly diagnosed the problem, found another problem and gave me several repair options. They had to order the parts, and it took a week, but none works great! I decided to bring my bike in for a tune-up. The folks at Bicycle Express are certainly very friendly, but: - the tune-up was overpriced ($50! Significantly more than I've paid elsewhere), - I had to leave my bike there overnight, which was problematic since I use my bike to commute to work. And they didn't call me like they said they would, so I didn't know I could pick it up. - the tune-up service itself was terrible. Tune ups are not very complicated. They managed to drench my chain in incredible amounts of oil, such that I later had to spend time un-oiling (it was getting on my clothes, and too much oil attracts dirt and particles, wearing down the chain). I'll definitely save my $50 and do it myself next time. Three stars for friendly service. read more

My bike's brake is not aligned properly, I took my bike to the shop, the staff was very friendly to show me how to fix it, but it was way beyond my knowledge and capabilities. He fixed for me and only charged $10. Before going to the shop I searched bike repair fees online and the tuning showed up as $80 or more. Let's just get it out on the open: This shop has got to be among the top in San Jose. I've been coming here for a while now, and during every visit, I feel welcomed and comfortable. The friendly, courteous staff will, without a skipped beat, stop and ask if you or anyone at the store needs help. They may be busy, but the service is all the same, questions in queue don't go unanswered, and the experience level is outstanding. A BIG thing to mention is the graciousness of the staff lending fellow bikers tools on the fly- pumps, wrenches, Allen keys, anything to get you on your way, they gladly let you borrow. One of the two setbacks i will mention of this store is the overall size- although cramped, it adds to the "local charm." Given that they aren't a "bug name store," you might find prices cheaper online, but the service and know-how/support is what keeps this place pristine. They may not have all the wheels/rims for your bike, but if you set an order, you'll be more than happy, and usually they can be cheaper/better quality than going to the flea market or 'Sports Center.' The other thing is the time for 'bigger' repairs, such as tune-ups or overhauls/repairs. This shop is popular, and, because of the well known service and lower than average prices, there is huge demand for bike-servicing here. On an average week, it'll take about 1 - 3 days for you to get back your bike (I've once had my bike returned to me that same day, in the evening before closing after a tune-up). Don't let the above mentioned 'setbacks' scare you, think of them as 'tips/warnings' ... This shop is worth it and I'm sure the reviews here will more than back up that statement. read more

My rear brakes were not working And I didn't have to much time, I had to go back to the San Francisco area before 5:00 I walk in around noon and they told me that my bike will be done at 5:00 so I explained my situation and immediately they game me a way shorter waiting time. I saw the other reviews here and thought, could they really be that good? The short answer, yes. I went in with a worn out bike that I got from the San Jose Flea Market that I had been let sitting out in the weather. About the only good thing on this bike was the frame wasn't bent... They took that and for less than $60 turned my bike into a fully functional machine that I enjoy to ride. And they were really nice while they did it. Bicycle Express is one of the most amazing service and parts oriented shops in the bay area. Are there places that will sell you a fancier bike? Sure. Are there other places with super high end parts? Sure. If you are a young person or a person who is looking to keep your bike maintained on a budget, this place is for you. They will help you maintain it yourself and offer parts at the cheapest possible prices I've found. If you're trying to fancy up your fixie for Bike Party, they can do that too and will at least help you put a brake on that damn thing. PLEASE PUT A BRAKE ON THAT THING. Great tune-up on my 25+ year-old bike, at a great price. My derailleur was having issues for the last year (I've been doing a LOT more bike riding), and at first, I tried making adjustments myself. :( Bad idea, don't have the rack to properly mount bike to do work. ) Anywho, got the thing so fouled up I decided to just go for a complete tune-up. The derailleur issue was actually caused by a mismatch of components installed during another tune-up by another shop over 10 or 12 years ago. Long story short, Chuck installed new drive cage (front derailleur, rear gears, new chain) and did the other bits of the tune-up for a GREAT price. I could not have bought the necessary tools, repair stand, and parts -- nor could I have done such a masterful job -- at even 3x the cost. The bike is simply wonderful to ride now! read more

Whenever I get a new/used bike, I always bring it to Bicycle Express! The folks here are super nice and definitely know their stuff. Each time I'm always helped by the nice lady behind the counter who is super knowledgeable about bikes as well... There have been a couple of times where I walk in and stand there for a bit and I see some people complaining about how they walked into the store and weren't greeted... Just say something! A "hello!" or "can i get some help??" is how I get their attention. The folks behind the counter are usually busy repairing bikes! Cut them some slack! I brought my Trek Multitrack here for a tune up and new tube/tire ($60 total) after finding it on Craigslist but then 3 months later it got stolen! A month later I found a bike on CL and had to go all the way to SF without a car to pick it up! The bike needed some serious help... New tires/tubes were needed and the brakes were worn. While in SF, a friend suggested I take my new/used bike to a bike shop in the city but no! After miles of walking with the bike then taking BART, and then Caltrain, I took my bike to Bicycle Express to get new wheels, brakes, and a tune up! The price for repair service is very reasonable and good for broke students like me :) read more

Wow what a moving, inspiring and heart felt experience. If there were more businesses like this we would not need all the consumer protection legislation that exists. Helpful, knowledgeable, competent, efficient and ethical. I twice saw one of the staff walk away from a sale because it was not the right equipment for the consumer. One of those consumers even tried to talk him into a sale, and he stood his ethical ground exclaiming they could manage to get it on the bike, but it really was not designed for that bike style. Just got the cheapest bike I could find off amazon to replace my stolen old bike. I assembled the bike but couldn't figure out how to tune up the brakes and gears. Saw the flying reviews on yelp and knew right away that this is gonna be my spot. Went in and they said they didn't disappoint. Was worried I would have to wait a few days but they got all fixed up as I got there in the evening. There were damages from the the shipping and they fixed it at no extra charge. They even said that if I contact amazon regarding the damages that they would talk to them and probably get them to flip the bill on the tune up. I'm so happy I have spot I can trust while I finish school in San Jose. This place has integrity and that's hard to come around these days. read more

This place is great. I recently bought a bike off of Craigslist and I needed to get the brakes tuned up a little and have a messenger rack taken off the back. I took it in and he looked at my brakes and said it would be an easy tune up and after I suggested replacing the break pads, the guy said they were fine and there was no need, i.e. they don't bullshit you to drive up the price. It was $24 to adjust both the front and back brakes, and they took the messenger rack off of the back for no charge. The best part was that right before I was about the leave the bike there, the guy that was helping me noticed that my front gear mechanism was a recalled part from Shimano from 10 years ago! He said that Shimano warranted the parts for life since they were recalled and they replaced my entire front assembly for free and handled all of the paperwork, etc. with Shimano. They even had the part in stock and switched it out for me while they adjusted the brakes. I am moving to Mountain View soon, but will be making the trip to San read more

I passed by this place plenty of times in the downtown area, but never gone in. Now that I've a bike, I have a resaon! I entered the small shop thinking, "Man, this his place is grungy! But I kinda like it." Despite the garage-feel of the shop, I couldn't complain with the service. I was helped by an elderly woman for decent set of front/back bike lights for $16. The mechanic near by added reassurance by recommending the compact light set "to get the job done." I couldn't be happier with my purchase and the service. Fast service, great prices, and a great staff! I've been coming here ever since I bought my bike 2 years ago and this is pretty much the only shop I NEED to go to. They have a lot of basic stuff you need for repairs or if you just want to spice up the bike a little bit. The components they carry are pretty much generic stuff but it works and it's cheap. Their labor is also really fair and if you just need something simple done they can get it done pretty quick. The staff is extremely helpful so don't hesitate to ask questions. It does get pretty busy and it's really cramped inside but they are still able to tend to your needs very promptly. The best thing about the shop is that they don't mind letting you borrow tools if you need to quickly fix your bike outside.
