I'm not an avid cyclist - mostly just bike for transportation to and from school, and the occasional trail - but Bicycle Express came to SJSU for free tune-ups and I lucked out and was one of the last in line before they had to leave. My bike (an older hybrid diamondback off craigslist) used to squeak and groan probably due to age and me just not taking care of it too well, but now it rides so much more smoothly - honestly I didn't even know how much of a difference it would make through truing the wheels, oiling the chain, and adjusting gears. All of the staff were super friendly, and clearly had an expansive knowledge on bike parts and the mechanics. They gave recommendations and were really easy to talk to. Local mom&pop store... would definitely recommend to anyone in need of a tune up, or maintenance. read more

WOW! Don't know how to express how impress I am with Bicycle Express except WOW! My son's bmx need some work done and I shop around my area coz' it is convenient and the quote I got from those shops are from $75 to $110 and one of them turn me down coz' I only want the tire fix and the other told me it's better for me to look at Craigslist and just buy him another used bike. I'm so glad I found Bicycle Express. the cashier is really nice and Jose is really helpful. Here's what they did: Replace 2 inner tube, replace rear tire, fix the brake clamp and adjust them and align the handle bar. They quoted me first for $42 and when I picked it up, the final cost is $32. the shop might be small but they are really friendly and won't cost me my arm and leg to get my bike fix! My father gave me his old Raleigh bike from the 80's for my last birthday. It was in good condition when he gave it me, except maybe needed a tuneup. So I took it in to Bicycle Express. Right away, they recognized the bike and what year it was from. I got the impression they really know their bikes here. All in all, I got the tuneup, new ties, pedals, and lights. I really appreciate they didn't try to sell me on a bunch of things I didn't need, but rather let me decide what I'd like to purchase. They quoted me one week for the work to complete, but it ended up taking even less time than they quoted. I got the bike back now and its running just fine. Found this place on Yelp and I took my daughter's bike (Giant Liv) which had a broken freehub on it's rear wheel. The repair included replacing the wheel, replacing the tube, tightening the brake and adjusting the derailleur as the chain was slipping sometimes when you change gears. A young gentleman named Nikko helped me with the right service advice and all the repairs. Very pleasant service, good quality repair at a very affordable cost. Stopped in this great little shop to get a new inner tube. They had my bike on the stand within a minute or two of walking in. It cost me $19 to have a new heavy-duty tube installed. Tubes seem to sell for $6-10 and up for higher quality tubes after a quick online search. So $19 for a quality tube installed was a great deal. The mechanic also did a "safety inspection" which was complimentary. I am not sure exactly what the policy is on that, but I really appreciated the extra service. He made sure that the chain was much tighter and thus less prone to falling off. My bike was back on the road in minutes, which was great, as I recently installed a child seat and wanted to be able to safely ride around with my son. They also fixed my grips by shooting some air into them to snug them onto the handlebars. The staff were friendly and cool. A very good vibe in their tiny shop. Good prices on the accessories I browsed while they did the work. I can't speak to their selection of bikes for sale or rent or the prices on those things, but based on the services and prices I did see, I would assume that they have very reasonable prices. If you are near SJSU or downtown, I would definitely recommend you check this place out. Totally pleased. read more

When they let me do so, they actually take the time to make adjustments so when I ride it, it was much more comfortable and fitting such that I actually want to buy it. Brought in a brand new bike for a tune-up. It took about 5 days to get it back. The front wheel was flat and the air cap was missing when I got it back. I didn't notice till I got home but I'll let it slide. Chuck was still very sweet and the woman that rang me up said she they stand behind their work and to give them a call if anything. For $50, they can keep the air cap! I've been quoted $100 as a base price for a bike tune-up around the corner. I'll be coming back for my next tune-up. Just leave some air in the tube and the cap on next time! read more

You know how there are those noobs that come in a store and ask for something super vague, and with the vocabulary of "uhms.." "stuff and like.." tied to their descriptions? Sadly, I'm one of these noobs. Gas prices are rising, and a broke college student such as yours truly can't keep up with it! So I turn to my bike to take me places. The store is on the not-so-spacious side, and I find myself becoming claustrophobic when I'm there on busy hours. But I'm not here to whine about the lack of space, this review is about their service! I've come here for parts and for their services. Super friendly, very warm and welcoming. At first I expected a bite or some sort of pretentious attitude towards noobie cyclists but it wasn't the case here. No need to name drop coz they carry most of the brands that people look for, and if they don't have it they'll order it in for you. $15 to break down my bike, and about $25-$30 to put it back together - the price varies a lot so it's best if you go down there yourself and get a quote. read more

The true ride or die type of business, with the real go to guys that gets it done! - This is the only place I know where I can get a bar tape and a derailleur adjustment for less than $25. True story.. these guys and gals here know what it is to be a cyclist, a student, and be broke- I can say that because I've been all three at one point and they've kept me on the road on my bike just hammering away miles and miles chasing that better future. Well guess what? - I'm all well and done now- I've graduated, opened a small business of my own and I came to get my old partner in crime (my bike!) a derailleur adjust.. it gave me chills just stepping into this small shop with a humble heart because they don't know what they've done for me as a struggling person. Without these guys (along with ramen noodles + eggs!) I wouldn't be where I am. So without hesitation- this has got to be the easiest 5 stars i've put on yelp in my few years of yelping. I brought my bike here today because it was getting constant flats / slow leaks. I was encouraged by all the great reviews on Yelp, but it was a small shop crowded with boxes and cheap accessories. The repair person took my wheel off, looked at the tire, looked at the rim, and checked the tube for leaks. He said he couldn't find a reason for the leak. He pumped it up again and I left. An hour later, the tire was almost completely flat again. I brought it to Cognition Cyclery in Mountain View and the repair person diagnosed the problem: a rough spot on the rim that was piercing the tube, which he sanded down. He also pointed out a loose seam on my tire, so I replaced the tire as well. Diagnosing flats is a basic issue and the repair person at Bicycle Express wasn't able to notice either issue. Of course, I didn't notice the chip on the rim either... but that's why I take my bike to a shop, because I don't notice little things. I won't be bringing my bike back here again. Two stars only because they didn't charge me (but did waste my time). read more

I was mounting my bike onto the car rack--ready to leave and Chuck came up to me outside and introduced himself as the guy who worked on my bike. How cool! He gave some details but I had a headache and was pressed for a deadline so wasn't being my usual cheery receptive self. Went to Bicycle Express today to rent a bike so I could go riding with my son. I had been calling around to get prices and Bicycle Express ended up being the lowest cost for a Mountain Bike, they only wanted $25.00 for the day compared to $50.00-$75.00 at some of the other shops I checked with. So naturally I went with them. So I drove over to the shop, walked in and was quickly greeted and asked if I needed help. Told them I wanted to rent and the guy recognized my voice from the phone and quickly got me setup. One of the employees asked if I would have it back by 6pm and I said maybe but most likely not, turns out the shop is closed on Sunday and its a 24 hr rental. So I asked if I would need to pay for 2 days rental. Guy said nope just bring it back on Monday and I would only be charged for 1 day. After that I was quickly fitted to a bike. The Mountain Bike I received was a quality bike that has been maintained well. They even threw in a helmet, bike repair kit and asked if I needed a lock, all for $25.00! So yeah great service and they even let me take the bike longer then a day for the same price. I will definitely be coming back to these guys for future service and when I am ready to buy a bike soon. read more

It seems like we're constantly stopping off these days at one bike shop or another to pick up little items here or there for our bikes.....Move over Xzibit, we're pimpin' our rides! :) I'll be honest, first look of Bicycle Express and I thought it looked a bit sketchy. The store itself is pretty small and there are things jammed around everywhere. But when you walk around, you really see that they've got everything you'll ever need for great prices. The staff were friendly and extremely knowledgeable about products and bikes. And I loved that I didn't feel like they were trying to get us to buy the more expensive items. Great little community store. Lesson learned: Don't judge a book by its cover :) read more

I just want to mention how wonderful and helpful Bicycle Express is. I called the other day needing a horn. Yes, the little thing that goes "honk" that one puts on a kid's bike. They had it and I bought it. As I was walking out I asked if they had, in my layperson parlance, "one of those thingies that attaches to the seat post to make a bike into a tandem". What followed was some great service and explaining. They also said "yes", a used one, that I could get for a good deal. I said sure. I get a call in a few hours, walk over, and it was indeed EXACTLY what I wanted and did get a GREAT deal. I can't illustrate enough how important this was to me. My son is autistic and has trouble with balance. He's a bit too heavy for me to train in the traditional sense (I dislocated my shoulder trying), so I needed something that gave him the sense of riding, pedal and a bit of balance. He took right to it! It was fantastic! The service at Bicycle Express is A-list with the perfect amount of mom and pop. The prices are more than reasonable. The selection is upper end utilitarian. You may or may not see Lance Armstrong in there (or whomever it is that's popular and not a doper these days), but you WILL see the local athletic rider AND the local daddy, like me! I haven't done a yelp review since early last year, but I had to do one for these guys at Bicycle Express. All the good things you hear about this place are true. Chuck and Eric know their shit and work with your price range. At first glance this place looks smallish with an intimidating hipster bike-snob mentality. Don't be fooled! I wanted to do a SS-coaster for a junk road bike I came across, and all I needed was the rear wheel with the coaster brake setup. They ordered it on a Thursday and it came the following week, cause it had to be shipped in. Here's where it gets messed up. During the weekend one of my drunk friends power-slides and taco's the new wheel. Of course I'm pissed and I'm like "Oh Hail No". But he said he would pay for it. So I bring it back in and Chuck without judgment was like, leave it here over night and I'll see what I can do. Sure as shit, he did some magic and the next day, good as new! Plus he didn't even charge me. But feeling bad about the hard work being for free, I bought some stuff anyways to show my LBS some love. The rear tire of my bike just went flat. I walked the bike home and realized that the wheel has a slight wobble to it so onto yelp I go to find a shop to help me true the wheel. I saw bicycle express with its many reviews and decided to pay them a visit. I went in and the guy took a look at my wheel and said it's not fixable. That I would have to purchase a new rim and have it rebuilt which would cost $40. Saddened, I went home and ordered another rim. Just in case, I called up another bicycle repair shop and they said to bring it in so they can take a look. In 10 minutes, the rim was straightened and I'm on my way. Total cost? $10. To this day, I'm still not sure why the guys at bicycle express didn't even bother trying to straighten the wheel. Maybe they were too busy? Maybe I looked like a sucker? Who knows. read more

Switched to this bike shop after bad repair experiences with another big name bike shop where I originally bought my bike. I told them that if they could fix a problem and a flat that another bike shop had messed up on, that I would come back to them rather than the other bike shop. So far, so good, after coming by about 3 times. This place not only looks legit (been around for years, always has customers, attentive staff, looks a little grimey-- good signs), but is also a great bike shop. They also test ride the bikes when needed and mark seat posts so they put them back at the right height. Both good signs. Do they live up to their name? Bicycle: yes, they sell bicycles...and parts...and repair bikes. Express: yep, they're pretty darn fast! My non-major issues have been done within a couple hours. These guys have come up with some creative fixes to problems on my bike too, where other bike shops have said "oh that's just the way it's going to be." I'm definitely a loyal customer now. Small bike shop jammed with experts who are usually friendly (not always) and definitely empathetic to the needs of the bicyclist. I just go in and tell them how much money I have, what I need done, and whether I can do it myself, and they work it all out on my budget. They loan tools if you need 'em, and they're conveniently located downtown. It's this place or Wheels Away for me. Long story short, I recovered my Raleigh mt. bike after it was stolen from my back patio. After being stripped of all the quality parts, I took it in to get the parts replaced. Chuck, who was very knowledgeable in his craft, assisted me. He recommended some upgrades w/marginal cost and even let me borrow a seat (since mine was not recovered). After a couple of days (and some hard work from the bike mechanics Eric & Jose) my bike was restored back to normal. Karen finalized the transaction with her infectious good-natured attitude. She reinforced my decision to pick this shop when i'm about 25 miles out of the area. I was so impressed that I ended up buying another bike from them...and since I couldn't fit both bikes in my sedan, they offered delivery to my work the next day - what!? talk about service - you can't beat that! I can't say enough of this 'lil shop, they're friendly, courteous and really do go above an beyond when it comes to customer service. Bicycle Express, keep up the amazing work. Recently I got a flat tire, so stopped by to get a new tube. Bought a backup one too since the price was really reasonable. However the tube went loose and released air without any usage of bike after a day. Returned to the shop and was given a free tube. The manager is a very gentle and polite man. My new favorite and now ONLY bike shop. I went in today after readin the yelp reviews. I want a bicycle shop, not fancy schmancy spandex clad yuppies pushing $5000 carbon fiber bikes. I want guys who work on bicycles, have oil on their hands, and know the business. From the moment you walk into Bicycle Express? you KNOW they have passion for bicycles, ALL bicycles. I brought in 2 bikes, an Indian (dot not feathers) Hercules I want to do a 3 speed conversion on. They told me where to find a 3 speed hub, and they would lace one on, but it is a vintage part they cannot order. They suggested another shop as a Source. Second, my old mountain bike, which I want to turn into a "haul the kido around on" bike. They fitted a kick stand and are ordering a rear rack-seat combo. I can go on and on about how friendly they are, but I wont. Instead, I'll tell you, I will not go to any other shop, Bicycle Express is now my ONLY bike shop in California. And I will take all my business here, and refer all my friends here. And yes, as they last guy posted, one of the mechanics has a striking resemblance to a younger Tommy Chong. :) Hooray, more guys named Charles! read more

These guys are like a Bicycle ER. My brand spanking new bike suffered a flat which I managed to fix on my own, except for one problem: the front disc brake somehow closed up and I couldn't get the wheel back on. (rookie problem, I now know) I was DYING to ride it as if I going through caffeine withdrawal, so when Yelp summoned Bicycle "Express" I was ecstatic. I immediately called and explained my problem hoping they'd be able to fix it quickly. The guy on the phone was like "Uh... just stick a screwdriver between the pads and wiggle to open it up." Clearly it was a 1 minute job that he wasn't enthused about, but I insisted because I wanted to watch a professional for future reference. He complied. I started doing cartwheels in the office. 2 minutes and 5 bucks later, my bike was up and running again! read more

Fantastic experience. I needed a new crank for my bike and thankfully they had it in stock. Other bike shops needed to "special order" it, which seemed odd to me because it's a basic part. Customer service was outstanding. When I called in for the part, I was put on hold, but then I got an important call, so I had to hang up. To my surprise, the girl at the shop called me back to let me know they had the part. Lastly, when I got to the shop, it was packed because it's really tiny, but they worked efficiently to help me and the other customers. I was out in 10 minutes. read more

Dear Home, I have found the best bicycle shop. Ever!!! Story: Three rides in a row, Boy broke rear wheel spokes. The first two repairs cost ~$40 each. I'll give the first place the benefit of the doubt, but the second place should have offered me other repair options (such as rebuilding the wheel!) when I told them that the problem's happened before, Boy is a big boy, etc. The third time, I called a bunch of shops to see if I can get the wheel rebuild. Because Boy's bike was purchased for less than $500, I'm not going to put $250 into a brand new wheel, and I tell them this up front. All of them say that Boy's bike is a piece of crap (it's not!) and that he should ditch it for a pricer bike or that I should suck it up and pay for a new wheel. I call Bicycle Express and they say that they can rebuild the wheel with heavy duty spokes for $65 (just over the cost of repairing a spoke!). When I pick it up, they remembered who I was *and* encouraged me to bring it back in after a ride to get it re-tuned (which is covered in the price of the repair!). After I brought it home, I also discovered that they cleaned the sprocket (a very nice bonus). Absolutely love it! Great service, great prices, and they don't have any of the snobbery that comes with most bike shops. read more
