I bought my Schwinn LeTour II in 1977. I was a kid but I had money saved and, for me, it was like buying a car. After all these years, it still looks like new with hardly a scratch even though it has logged many miles It's had some upgrades but, increasingly, I just used it on rollers indoors. A beautifully bright orange bicycle is meant to be seen. It was that realization that made me say goodbye to a bike that I once thought I would own forever. I made the decision to give it away and Bicycle Kitchen seemed as good a place as any other. I rolled my LeTour in last weekend and Reynaldo was there working on his own bike. He was surprised that I wanted to donate mine and he encouraged me to keep it. We often talk about hidden gems when referring to bars or restaurants but rarely do we have a true hidden gem in plain sight. This place is an oasis in the SoCal desert. Yes, they have weird hours but it's worth it. Catch me if you can style. Norvand put a new chain, new/used wheel and new/used tire on my charming rusty beach cruiser. The back tire was about to explode literally and the chain would fall off 2+ times every time I rode my beloved bike. The place has a great community that is cheerful, helpful and full of energy. People of all rides of life with varying degrees of expertise drop in to volunteer or just donate supplies. The vibes were positive as was the random yet extensive and quality collection of parts. What an experience! I will go back again but for now I will happily ride off into the sunset and just enjoy my bike. This bicycle shop is an asset to the community to help cyclist maintain their bicycle or provide others with a used bike at no cost. I stopped by to donate boxes of used parts I had stored in my garage but didn't want to throw away. The only thing I wish they would do is stay open everyday because their limited hours are not too convenient. I came here thinking it was a bike shop but to my surprise it was even better. It's a non profit bike co op space where volunteers or "bike cooks" teach and walk you through bike maintenance/ repairs. I thought I needed a new chain but they after they inspected it they just let me know that my bike just needed some TLC. I cleaned and oiled up my chains and tightened my brakes. The Bicycle Kitchen is pure heaven on earth. The volunteers here have taught me so much about bikes. I always leave a little sweaty, pretty greasy, and much more in tune with my 2 wheeled little friend -- that also rides much better upon leaving. Bicycle Bitchen is especially great for female-identified bikers. The workspace is open only to women on Monday evenings 6:30-9:30pm which makes it more likely for us to get stand time since the kitchen gets real busy other days, at least when I visit on weekends. The space is pay what you can, with a suggested $7/hour donation. Parts are also by donation as they're all donated parts themselves. Leaving the kitchen with a nice souped up bike that you've built/fixed yourself is a great deal, and I'm happy to support this space. The cooks and the people who frequent the kitchen are all really nice and willing to help, even when you're a total bike noob. You guys rock. read more

Wow, this place was so crowded! It was sort of hard to know who was working here, because they place was packed and the staff doesn't wear anything to make them stick out. So, why rate it so good, when it sounds like I am crying in the sink? Well, when I got the girl behind the counter to help me, it was awesome! She knew her stuff, had be outfitted with the right parts, helped me understand some new terms, and I got a fair price. What more would I want? Well, I would say, this place is a little more expensive than others. But, I like this place a lot more than others. I am happy to throw in a few extra greenbacks to get such service! read more

What a great concept. Bicycles for all, and all for bicycles. This is a community space, volunteer driven, bicycle advocacy program. A "soup kitchen" for cyclists. They will teach all types of riders the ins and outs of their bike. Schedule an appointment for a technical fix, or walk in for a quick fix. The bicycle kitchen will not only fix the problem, but teach you how to fix it yourself, as well as prevent it from happening again. Its the antithesis of our wasteful world. Instead of throwing something out, take it here and repurpose it, and gain the practical skills in doing so. NOTE: yeah, they have crazy hours. Don't like them? Volunteer your time so they can be open longer. Too busy? Donate to a practical, real cause that has an immediate impact for people who's bikes are their lifeline. Stay safe! read more

If there was a "Car Kitchen", a "Finance Kitchen", and a "Girlfriend Kitchen", I think 90% of my issues would be solved. I came in the other day with a bike I'd picked up and no idea of how to work on it. I told the guy at the counter I'd never been in before and asked, "So what's the deal here?" He showed me how to put my bike on the rack, took a look at it and told me the wheel wasn't straight. He showed me how to true the wheel (my new slang for the week, it means straightening the wheel. like you didn't know, sheesh) , then how to adjust the brakes. All of this would have sounded like rocket science before I came here, but once I had someone friendly who knew what they were doing to show me what was what, it took less than an hour. They had all the equipment we needed, taught me how to use it, and asked for a whopping $7 donation in return. I gave ten. read more

When I arrived today for my scheduled appointment, I was informed that I was not allowed into the shop, as I am a man, and it is lady's night. I politely informed the lady shop attendant that I had an appointment. She showed me the sheet, and low and behold, there was my name, scratched off! My phone number right next to my name, and yet still nobody bothered to call me and tell me that my appointment was cancelled. At the time I arrived there was only one customer in the shop, and I don't think the additional pair of testicles would have made much of an impact on her. I was raised in the suburbs and, I can assure you, have no inherent knowledge of tools and working with bikes because of my penis. That the women running this shop think women are this inadequate and need a night to themselves feels sexist to me. That they would flatly not help me despite an appointment and plenty of available resources to do so is just rude. One star. read more

Such a great community resource! I was in need of a bike and thought it'd be a great idea to build a bike from scratch (i.e. "project). Alas, I knew NOTHING about bikes. Thankfully the "cook" (volunteer staff) who helped me, Michael, was patient in explaining how everything works and what to look for. Bike Kitchen provides all the tools and parts to repair, build your bike, or do your own project. Word of warning: when building a bike from scratch, you'll spend quite a bit of time looking for parts! But it's a great way to learn about bikes. I've found that every cook is different. A couple just tell you what to do without a lot of explanation so you really have to be your own advocate and ask another cook or the one who was helping you, even though he/she may be busy. Remember, there is no stupid question! Michael was great explaining the really basic things like inflating a tire, but with a couple of cooks I felt like stupid girl. I got over it. FYI, for the females like me, I highly recommend Monday nights Bicycle Bitchen--Open Hours for Women & Transgendered. There's a lot less people than normal open hours and the all female & transgendered staff are soooo supportive and patient. You don't feel as stupid girl with them than the guys...no offence to the guys though! Metro is a couple blocks away. There's also metered parking on Fountain and free residential street parking nearby. Boos Philly Cheesesteaks is almost next door for a bite to eat. read more

I've been riding my bicycle a my main form of transport since 2011. I recently had my bike stolen and I don't have the money to replace it with a bike of similar quality. I went to the bike kitchen and was able to build up a bike, frame up, with parts that they had there. they had piles of seats or brakes or whatever you needed. they had very helpful mechanic s that weren't bike snobs. I know my way around a bike, but I needed to thread some forks for a custom bike project I'm working on and I didn't want to purchase the $350 tool to do it. Called a couple of shops in the area and they didn't even have the tool to do it. Then I remembered Bicycle Kitchen and even better they were just opening as it was 6:30pm. Still not sure if its very Tami. While there I started working on a sweet ass Hybrid bike, most people around looked weirdly at is b/c it's not as hip as other bikes around. I'm not sure b/c I kind of want a shiny new bike, coolest thing is you can work on a bike and not pay for it until you're ready to take it home. They'll house your "project" for up to a month before other people can use it for it's parts. Their hours are weird though, generally only open 6:30-9:30pm weekdays and all day Sat/Sun and Mondays are Ladies/Bitches night. They are sometimes open Monday during the day, but I was super happy that I didnt drive over there midday midweek, so call them before you head on over. read more

If not, Orange 20 Cycles is across the street and will probably have what you're looking for. Bicycle Kitchen is a volunteer-run co-op with a generous supply of used parts, tools, and friendly people to coach you on bicycle mechanics. They don't buy or sell bikes or parts. They don't offer repairs as a service--they will teach you how to do it yourself, so come willing and ready to get dirty. Also, bring cash to pay for your $7/hr. stand time and any parts you take from their inventory. A little about my situation: I haven't owned a bicycle in at least 15 years, but I wanted something to do for fun, exercise, and a new project to tinker with. With the advice and help of a few friends, I picked up a 1970s road bike off Craigslist, and have turned to Bicycle Kitchen for their tools and tutelage on how to convert it to a retro-modern commuter self-statement on two wheels. I've logged two visits so far and replaced the stem, handlebars, brake levers, and shifters, tuned up the derailers and brakes, 86'd the spoke guard and trued the rear wheel. I donated all of the parts I replaced, as well as all my leftover cables and housing. I'm about one visit away from being done. I hope. I bought all of these parts (except the handlebars, which I found in Bicycle Kitchen's supply) and brought them in with me. While Bicycle Kitchen's got a lot of used parts of all shapes and sizes, I wanted to spend the most amount of time I could working on my bike and not hunting for parts. For you, it's a question of how much your time is worth. Bicycle Kitchen probably has a spare part that will do what you need it to do, but you'll need to dig for it and then do some trial and error. Bicycle Kitchen is a busy place. Hands-down best to go with a reservation, otherwise you will have to wait in line for a workstand. Otherwise, grab an ice cream from Scoops or a coffee from Cafecito and make some new friends. Parking here is a little tricky. Grab a metered spot as the local streets north of Melrose are zoned, but if you have a bike that works, ride it (duh!). If Bicycle Kitchen had more hours, they would have my fifth star by now. read more

I haven't personally been at the actual shop myself but the Midnight Ride that they help put together is a simply amazing experience. Just imagine from the front of the ride to the rear... took at least 8-10 min for the whole ride to pass.. . Description from website... Midnightridazz.com -2nd Friday of every month. Meet areas vary. 9:30 meet - Ride @ 10pm. The most recent ride was on the 7/14/06 and from what I heard from this guy I met named Joe that rides almost every time, said he counted at least 1300 riders... Roadies, MTB'ers, tandems, and Big Wheelers were all there. We rode through Hancock Park and people were coming out of their homes saying that we were riding in circles... lol. That's 1300 people on bikes lady. THANK YOU CORKERS!!! ******************************************************************** Ok... Two years later and I realize that I was a little misinformed because of my excitement of the Midnight Ridazz (I called it "Midnight Ride") Sooo... they don't organize the MR rides but a lot of people who go there have been to a MR ride. No complaints about this place.... ...why? I used to come here with my boyfriend, but now that I have my very own rad road bike which I bought at a garage sale, it needed some tuning up. I came in Sunday afternoon after making an appointment and asked a friendly volunteer, Kristen, if she could assist me. I told her the condition of my bike. Within one hour, not only did we turn my ol'pumpkin into a golden carriage, I also received a hands-on Lesson101 on everything there is to know about road bikes. I spent $16 here that day which included the hour of service($7) and a new chain($9) that had to be replaced. NOT BAD! Not bad at all. There is definitely a positive energy/atmosphere when you step into the Bicycle Kitchen. These volunteers are here to do what they love and I commend them for it. I got there early, and the door was unlocked. I went in, and I was kindly asked to leave... Inside, were volunteers giving a kid some assistance fixing his bike. I guess kids can come before the shop opens and earn a bike (by building it, under expert advice). Ok, enough about the kid. Now about me, and my experience otherwise: What an awesome f*in bike co-op!! I'm in love with the place (and its phenomenal organization!). I checked in and got a stand -- and a person! I had a specific person to go to for all of my questions, and he usually made himself very available when I needed him. When I saw him helping someone else, and I stopped a random other employee, they politely asked, "isn't so-and-so helping you?" Then I was awe-struck that I actually had a person! No confusing, contradictory advice from multiple people. No more explaining everything over and over again while trying to flag down some help. I had a person -- my very own person! ...he knew what I came in for, what I had done, little extra tweaks he wanted to show me, etc. Ahhh, it was blissful. I actually learned and accomplished something in the hour I was there. Everything went smoothly. Including my old bike as I pedaled off in to the moon-set... I always accepted clicking, crunching, and squeaking as an innate part of my vintage bike, but Mr. So-and-so gave me the tools and direction to make my rusty ride as silent as a breeze. I would like to share my story about coming here if you will indulge me. I have friends that ride but they are part of the bike culture in Los Angeles that most people frown upon which is the mobs of 200 people on fixies. That is not what I wanted to get into. I want to ride for fitness and exploring the city one bike lane at a time. I went to a shop in Pasadena where I was laughed out by a bunch of guys because of my lack of knowledge. I went to another shop in LA to find the guy would not talk to me unless I was ready to drop 1500 on a bike yeowch! I heard from a friend that this place will help you build a bike if you pay for parts and time so I wanted to check it out. I went online and emailed the Bicycle Kitchen. I asked a few questions which they promptly responded swiftly and answered all of them. I was pretty excited to check this place out. If you want a taste of REAL bike culture this is the place. When I walked in there was a mom fixing her daughters bike on one stand. A girl fixing her beach cruiser on another and the last one appeared to be a homeless gentlemen working on his brakes. All were welcome here. The volunteers was amazing they were INSANELY busy! That did not stop them ONCE from answering my questions about the shop, bike care or anything like that. To someone like me going in and being a complete novice this was invaluable in making me feel comfortable. I wound up hanging out for about 3 hours watching people work on their bikes, asking questions and helping people do maintenance on their bikes. This was awesome because I was not being coddled I had to learn and I had to work two things that are amazing when trying to learn the processes I had an amazing day there and I really want to go back (sadly my bike was stolen and I cant seem to find a non fixie bike on CL for a decent price.) When I get a new bike I really want to come here and pay to take the maintenance bike class they have. Sorry if that was long bottom line amazing people which are welcoming. I can not tell you have valuable this is when it seems to be all I come across are hipsters that look down on me because my bike isn't neon colors and a fixie. Great for knowledge through hard work.
