My husband Matt B. got really into riding his bike last year, so I decided to get him an upgrade for Christmas. This was a great idea because all I had to say was "I want to get you a new bike" and he did all the research. He went to Godspeed Cyclery, a bike shop in walking distance of our house, and conferred with the owner Alex. He decided to get a Trek Checkpoint SL 5 AXS Gen 3 in Trek Black/Matte Carbon Smoke. I know this because it was on the spec sheet Alex printed out for Matt to bring home. I waited until shortly before Christmas then called in the order. This was very easy, and I was told that the bike would arrive in a few days' time. I also decided to get Matt a bike computer as an actual surprise gift. I was about to buy one on Amazon when I thought to call Godspeed, and sure enough, they had several different options in stock. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I went in person the week before Christmas and met Alex, who was super nice and helpful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Godspeed was spacious and well stocked, with tons of bikes and related products. There was a whole back area I didn't even see, where the shop must handle repairs. I bought the high-end bike computer Alex recommended, with an assurance that Matt could return it if he didn't actually want or need an expensive gadget. I paid for the bike computer and the bike together, and Alex threw in a few accessories on the house: two water bottle holders and a portable bike pump, I think all of them also by Trek. I took the bike computer home and wrapped it immediately, with our four-year-old son Leo B. sniffing around, asking about the present while his dad was within earshot upstairs. I said I'd tell him if he piped down and kept it a secret, and he readily agreed. The next day, I overheard the following conversation: Leo: There are so many presents! Matt: But Leo, you know not all of them are for you. Some are for Wade, some are for Mommy, some are for Daddy... Leo: I know! I got you a bike computer! So much for surprises, but Matt was quite happy with his gifts. He's been riding his new bike almost every day, and the bike computer appears to be an excellent toy. My visit to this shop was short and sweet: I was greeted by an employee who took me to Alex in the back. He really is as friendly as other reviewers have stated. I explained the problems I was facing with my road bike and he immediately got to work on it. No more than 15 minutes later he had given my rear derailleur an indexing adjustment, inspected both my pedals, reinstalled said pedals after adjusting them, changed the tension of my rear brakes to match my front brakes, and shortened the lengthy, cable end stops on both my front and rear derailleurs (these had been super long since I last got my cables replaced). Thank goodness I found Godspeed Cyclery. Although not nearly the closest to my home in Encino, I'll drive to mid-Wilshire area for their knowledge, sincerity, friendliness and quality of service. Their overall attitude was so refreshing and made me nostalgic for days gone by! My finding Godspeed was sort of a fluke; I was directed there by a bike manufacturer's website (Trek) which showed they were one of the few stores in the area that carried the bike in which I was interested in possibly purchasing. I ventured to their store, which is relatively small compared to many of the bike stores that I've been to; the size of the store is misleading, however. They have an amazing inventory of road and mountain bikes, plus an extensive inventory of parts and accessories. When I came to Godspeed, I spoke with Brian, who inquired about the type of riding that I did. We discussed and I mentioned the model that I was interested in; Brian told me that I could buy that bike, but that I would probably do better (because of my interests) in a different (but similar priced) model. He wasn't even sure if they had it in stock, but said if they didn't they could get it. He wasn't trying to upsell me, he was trying to do what was best for me, and I appreciated that. It turned out that they did have the "better fit" bike in stock, but it had to be built. So I said I'd like to get that, and Brian said that they would build it and I could come back later that day and pick it up...he didn't ask for a deposit, he just took me at my word. When I came back to pick up the bike, I met Alex, the owner. He was friendly and clearly appreciates his customers. He, and Brian, were just as attentive upon my return to the shop and had assembled the bike beautifully. Alex asked me to come back after 2-3 rides, so they could adjust things and ensure that the bike performed up to its capability. Again, a throw-back to a different era. Yesterday morning, after the third ride since my purchase two weeks ago, I brought the bike in for its adjustment, and they actually remembered me! Alex, Brian and another gentleman working on a bike in the service area, all chatted with me while working on my and other bikes. Alex personally checked and adjusted the bike's many components. No charge. These guys are the real deal. Old-fashioned service, new technology, up-to-the-minute model inventory. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! If I could give six stars I would! Can't recommend this bicycle shop in Koreatown highly enough. I needed a bike helmet and a front light. The family who runs it was so sweet and patient with me while I tried on and asked for pricing on just about every helmet. I was sticking with the lower price points but you wouldn't know it from the excellent and attentive service. I also arrived not far from closing but they graciously stayed open a little late for me, didn't bring it up once, and didn't rush me out the door at all. After I chose my helmet and bike light they asked me if there was anything else I might want and it turns out I did. I also walked out with the cutest little bike bell. This was the year I decided to finally take the plunge and pick up a bicycle. Now for someone who hasn't ridden a bike since childhood, this was a daunting task. Plus, I'm above average height and size, 6'5" 270lbs. I'd need a special kind of bike to hold my frame, and not feel cramped. When I walked into Godspeed Cyclery I was greater by wall to wall bikes, accessories and a fantastic salesman, Kim. He knew exactly what I needed, allowed me to test ride several bikes and was very patient with my elementary questions. His zero pressure approach allowed me to go home, do my research and come back well informed. Fast forward a couple of hours, I walked (We'll rode) out of the shop with a fantastic Trek Dual Sport 2, in my size and all the accessories I'd need to get started. He never tried any pressure sales tactics. I went to a few other authorized Trek retailers, but GSC provided the best experience hands down. His wife is such a nice lady as well. Update: I'd like to provide a follow-up with additional context about my initial post, which was uploaded just as a few minutes after my bike had been stolen from the bike shop. I write this review not to completely dissuade a potential customer from coming in to Godspeed Cyclery, but so others are aware of this grave customer service that I hope nobody else ever experiences. I also hope this is a learning lesson for the business owner and for the staff who for some reason had decided it was okay to leave my bike unsecured and unsupervised next to their wide open front door that faces a busy street. I'll start of by mentioning that because of my good experiences these past four years at Godspeed Cyclery, I trusted that my bike, a Kona Honky Tonk, would be kept secured and well supervised after a wheel truing I had gone in for earlier this week. The staff even gladly agreed to store my bike overnight, which I had requested because my new puppy was having some health issues that had to be urgently attended to and I didn't happen to have enough time to make it back to the shop before closing time. Bless their hearts for agreeing to this without issuing an extra storage charge! What happened the day after I left my bike at the shop, though, was extremely shocking. After patiently waiting several minutes outside the shop because of a normal lunch break, I came inside to pick-up my bike only to find that it was missing! I then realized very quickly (given the staff's reactions) that my bike had been stolen. Instantly, I asked if we could review the security footage to confirm, if indeed, the bike had been stolen. To my surprise, the footage showed that after my bicycle was attended to, it was left in front of their counter, next to their front door, completely unsecured and unsupervised. It turns out that a stranger walking by the store took a peek inside, grabbed the first of many unsecured bikes he saw (which happened to be mine), and then biked away. All this happened in less than 30 seconds' time. A bike shop is the spot you would expect a deeply cherished bike to be cared for. It's a place we expect it'll be completely secure. So, of course, I was furious to find that this deep trust that cyclists place on a bicycle shop was completely violated. I hate to get emotional about this, but my bike is one I used to explore every corner of Los Angeles. It was a bike I took on trips across the city to get to the beach with friends, a bike I took along the Los Angeles River Bike Trail, the San Gabriel River Bike Trail, throughout Griffith Park, on LA Marathon Crash Races, on commutes to and from work, to destress from this crazy pandemic year we're having. This is also a bike I used to tour across Southern California and even Mexico in years prior. As you can see, there was a tremendous sentimental value attached to my bike. In addition, my Kona Honky Tonk was quite literally my ONLY form of transportation right now as I don't have a car and I don't feel safe taking Metro given coronavirus concerns. I was completely devastated that staff had failed to do the most basic thing ever - to ensure my bike was safe from being stolen! Any good cyclist knows this is the most important thing you could do - to ALWAYS secure your bike and take no chances because the possibility of theft always exists. As any person with a stolen bike would do, I immediately filed a police report with LAPD in case they were able (in the off-chance) to find my bicycle somewhere in the streets of LA. After the police report had been filed, I left the bicycle shop to calm down from the horrible situation that had transpired and post on as many social media sites (including BikeIndex and NextDoor) about my stolen bicycle in case any neighbors and fellow cyclists could catch it. Because my bike was stolen due to the bicycle shop's disregard for security, I also posted my negative review of Godspeed Cyclery the same day. The robbery is a completely valid reason for posting a negative review - this is a reason for which Yelp exists, to provide honest reviews about a person's experience, whether it is extremely positive, good, okay, negative, or extremely negative. Two days after the incident, I called the bicycle shop to confirm that they were still offering to replace my stolen bicycle with a free one of theirs. The first thing the staffer that answered the call responded with was a comment about the negative Yelp review that I had provided. I kid you not - the staffer was extremely confrontational on the call because I had posted a completely factual review of what happened to my bike and what I felt about the situation. Let me be clear, if the bike shop had done its due diligence and safely secured my bicycle, the initial negative review would have never been posted in the first place! This Review is LONG OVERDUE. Don't be SKEPTICAL, best bike shop in LA and I promise you, you will become a regular here (like I did). I found this place through yelp + plus my friends who are regulars at this store. To start off, I always loved cycling and wanted to seriously get back into it after a long break. The shop owner Alex is a very honest gentlemen who won't upsale you or recommend bikes that does not cater to your "fit". He also, help me get my first lycra kit, as well as my first cleats and pedals. BTW, fitment is CRUCIAL for cycling, because it can prevent aches, soreness, joint pain, or any muscle imbalances that may cause injury while riding. He assesses your physical structure and gives recommendations on the types of bikes within the spectrum of the clients "wants". This way, we can enjoy the bike for a long time while riding our hearts out. I personally got fitted here for two of my bikes and while getting fitted, Alex was kindly educating me on how my body is structured for different styles of riding. Alex never rushed the process and answered all of the questions I had (and I asked alot... lol). **SPOILER ALERT*** They have the best selection of TREK and BIANCHI, so do not miss out on it. They go out FAST I will definately be purchasing my 3rd bike in the future from this shop (once I save a bit more ha!) You can never have too many bikes..
