In the most recent instance I called asking about a handlebar swap on my gravel bike. As you can see from my transcript of the call below, I clearly stated all the facts up front (Pinarello Grevil F7 2024, integrated cable routing, hydraulic disc brakes, mechanical shifting, separate bar and stem). They quoted me a price of $72 or ~$75 with tax. I came into the store today with the bike, went up to the counter and politely asked them to confirm that the price would be $72. The worker said no and then printed me out a quote $336 -- nearly FIVE TIMES the cost I was quoted on the phone. I would understand a small price difference. But ~FIVE TIMES THE PRICE? I walked away feeling extremely misled and deceived. Is it normal for them to lie to potential customers about the price to get them in the door and then upcharge them later? The time before I took my road bike w/ clip on aerobars into the shop for bar tape and re-wrapping. With a sales associate I picked out a tape, after I was told it would be long enough to cover both the main bar AND the aerobars. Upon returning I was told "Sorry, there wasn't enough for the aerobars" and was given the bike back. I got halfway home and realized they hadn't asked me to pay! Not wanting to be accused of theft, I turned around and had to come back and pay them. The cost I believe was close to $50 -- more than the cost of the tape itself.

DC has some law against selling used parts but not so, fair Mount Rainier -- the city actually donates the space to this volunteer-run effort. The co-op was founded by a bike whiz who still works the wrenches there and is eager to teach the nuts and bolts of bike repair to anyone who cares to listen. Service and parts a tad more expensive than Phoenix, but still quite reasonable, especially for DC cyclists used to paying a premium at stores in pricey neighborhoods like G-town or Adams Morgan. You can shop for parts and do your own repairs if you're so inclined. Didn't ask if they fix up bikes for sale as does Phoenix; call during their odd hours (Tue 6pm-8:30pm; Wed 6pm-9pm; Sun 1pm-5pm) for more info.

Although I dropped in without an appointment, they began work on my bike right away. They were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and generous with their time. In addition to repairing the derailleur, they spent considerable time talking with me to explain the nature of the work that was needed as well as providing recommendations for other repairs to make the bike safe. Over the years we have been very satisfied with College Park Bicycles for our bicycle needs, including purchasing another bicycle and various accessories, as well as for maintenance service. We have always experienced high-quality service from them, both under current and previous ownership, and all of the staff and management there have been helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and reliable - we trust their judgement and advice and will keep going back. Before making the trek over here, my friends and I looked online to see if there were whistles to be had any where near where we were. We weren't having much luck until this popped up. We made our way over here and into the store. Trying to figure out where whistles would be in a sporting goods store is not fun. Every single sport they represent could be a possibility of that location. We wondered up and down aisles in hopes that they might be with the soccer gear, no luck. Basketball gear? Nope. Hidden in the back corner of the store? Why of course... We see the whistles, grab our twenty and head to the register. The guy ringing us up must of thought why are we buying so many. Then when the total came up, something wasn't adding up. Even with simple math it wasn't correct. Then we noticed that the amount per whistle is not what was listed on the many pegs we just cleared back there. We let the guy know that each peg we pulled from was a price less than what was in the system. He got on his walkie and had a back and forth with another employee who persisted that the price it is ringing up is the price. We protested, as we (four of us) all told him the price is not as marked on the peg. They were hoping that we wouldn't care much, but one of my friends went to the back corner to meet the associate and point out where we grabbed the whistles from. Once she did that, they honored the priced from the numerous pegs. Crazy situation, but when you buy twenty of something, the price difference definitely stands out.
