Oh. My. God. This place is too good for words. Not very in-the-know for the Edmonton food scene, I relied on one of my girlfriends who lives in Edmonton still (I do not) to suggest a place to grab a later dinner. We ordered the beef tartare, coal fired sugar pumpkin, sourdough, and pork shoulder, plus a couple of the beer tastings. It was all divine. In fact, this may have been one of the best meals I have ever had and I wasn't even hungry! My only suggestion is that you should be able to choose the 4 beers you get for the beer tasting rather than these being pre-selected but that is only a minor inconvenience. I agree with other reviewers when they say that the food at Biera is on another level because it really is. If you get the chance to go here - DO IT. You will not regret it. read more

Deep within the confines of the Ritchie Market (a hard left as soon as you walk in) is what Avenue magazine has designated as this years best newbie resto. Biera is a super cool looking place mostly made up of wood and steel. A see thru brewing room and a large long bar accent this excellent space. Good thing we made reservations (you should too) because it was packed for a Tuesday night. We get a cozy little seat and get our dinner under way. This is probably the most interesting menu I've come across in recent memory. I'm not even gonna attempt to explain it because it's so diverse in conception and execution that I would butcher any attempt to convey what the hell is going on at this place. First off..their sourdough bread. A thing to behold according to the write ups and yes it is very tasty, but the show stopper is the whipped lardo topped with buckwheat for an incredible added crunch texture. Downside, you get the privilege of paying 12 dollars for 2 pieces of bread. Like one piece of sourdough bread cut in half actually. A little steep in my estimation. The menu is basically a tapas bar on steroids. All plates are meant to be shared and are all very elaborate. So we decided on 3 selections. Smoked potatoes, charcoal parsnips, and a grilled pork shoulder for the meatatarian . The parsnips were pretty tasty, the roasted ones were delish. The shaved ones were a bit sweet for my palate. Smoked potatoes in a mushroom garlic sauce. Again pretty good, the deep fried russet potato on top was amazing! The baby potatoes a little dry and underwhelming for me. And the pork shoulder was also pretty good. The ends were almost all fat and when you grill fat like that on a cut like shoulder it's basically shoe leather. The middle part was perfectly seasoned and juicy tho. In the end I like this place. The beer is all brewed in house and everything on the menu is locally sourced and pretty tasty. The biggest problem with this place is price. I hate harping on this especially with the min wage going through the roof, but everything (except the beer) was outrageously priced. Parsnips-17 dollars. Potatoes-17 dollars. Pork Shoulder-28 dollars. Two glasses of mediocre wine-26 dollars. Beer...cheap and delicious! This is a cool place no doubt with a bright future, I'm not going to be tripping over myself to get back there anytime soon tho. Biera is definitely unique! The layout of the space feels very open with the super high ceiling and some large community seating style tables at the centre. The visible brewing equipment and pipes definitely makes this place look even cooler. Their menu changes seasonally and has seems to be carefully crafted with unique ingredients. They encourage ordering multiple dishes and sharing which is something I prefer doing in groups. We tried almost everything on their appetizer and dessert menu and my personal favourites were the sourdough and beef tartare. The desserts were not my favourite as they are not your conventional flavours and textures. Maybe it is just an acquired taste that I might appreciate the next time? Obviously the beer was pretty awesome, they have a variety of flavours and I liked almost all that I tried. read more

Poor service. Lack lustre food. We had reservations at 7pm for 4 and we asked the hostess for a different table than originally placed at. The hostess declined as there was another party that had specifically requested all of the other 4-tops (weird). Our server initially started out great but slowly became distant and disengaged. The food came out progressively throughout the night; the presentation was great but the flavour was incredibly bland and lacked any seasoning. The cherry on the top of the night was that after we paid our bill. The server had told us that we weren't able to stay around and we had to finish our drinks outside in the foyer as our table was earmarked for another reservation. Our bill for 4 people came out to $200. Not bad, but I'd rather spend it elsewhere. Thanks but no thanks Biera. read more

It is all about the food!!! Coincidentally I went here on the day that It was named top 32 restaurant in Canada. Lots of pressure as my partner was not so keen eating in Richie. The place is located in a very changed and improved corner in Richie. The area has gone through a major make over and it looks quite good. Parking in on the street and although I didn't have issues it may be tight in a busier time. I later noticed that there is parking area one block west from the restaurant so it is good to know. Biera is a an industrial looking restaurant. There is a brewery at the restaurant so you can see the pipes and the beer silos with in. There is seating inside the restaurant and you need a reservation for it. However, the host does offer non reservation needed sitting outside of the restaurant. Of course, it is first come first sit basis but it is good to know that you have options. Here you will have to share the space with patrons from a vary flavorful coffee place situated in front of Biera. There was a patio also but still cold to try it. Bathrooms are down the hall and shared with other businesses in the building. They are super clean,, bright and not far to find them. The service was good but a bit slow. The server was very knowledgeable about the plates and drinks the suggestions. She did confuse the beer order from a full pint for a half pint instead. No harm though as we could try a different bear for the other half. When asking for the bill, she took her time and i think it relates to how busy it got. So now the food.. This is the best part. We order three dishes: one potato based one chicken and the risotto. The chicken and the risotto were very delicious. You can feel the flavours exploit in your mouth. Probably one of the best meals in a long time. I admit I had observer jealously as I noted many other plates served in other tables thst look quite appealing. For you, if it is your first time.. Order few dishes and Share them with your friends. Be adventurous as there are really nice plates at the restaurant. Skip the potato dish, For example.. It is tasty eh but bit of a safe bet and try something a bit more riskier. Definitely you leave the restaurant with the intention to come back, try a different plate, and bring your friends... It is enjoyable and you should try it but be aware of that with the new best restaurant title.. It may become harder to make reservations here. read more

My wife and I took a friend for dinner as a thank you for helping us out with some things. The place was packed for our 7 o clock rezzo on a Friday night. We were seated promptly in the loud echoing dining area and our server soon arrived to take our drink order and to explain the menu. Obviously, considering BIERA is also Blind Enthusiasm Brewing, the beer was what we ordered and it was pretty good brown nectar, maybe not the the best brew in YEG but, not bad. Since it is preferred to be a sharesie type experience, we did just that: Biera Sourdough was amazing, so delicious with the whipped lardo. Ricotta Dumplings were good, but a bit too salty., need to find a better way to balance the saltiness. Winter Green Salad, same issue with the saltiness, not sure why, but we all found this to be a bit salty as well. Grilled ACME chicken, right from the butcher next door, this was good, but again, at this point maybe we were looking for it, but it was a bit salty. Korean Short Ribs were good, but not as adventurous as I hoped. Desserts: We got em all, and they were all top notch. Actually some of the best desserts I've ever had in Edmonton. Service: Excellent. I really had high hopes for this place. They definitely lost stars in customer service. I came earlier than my friend and sat there for a while staring at the menu. No hello or acknowledgement that i've been sitting there for a while. Another person got sat down beside me and he sounded like an amazing server. Right there my disappointment started. Finally someone came and i got to order my cider. When my friend arrived she mentioned that her other friends had the same disappointing customer service. She ordered the beer flight. I ordered the scallop cerviche right away. I have to say the thin sheets of scallops gets better the more you eat. Our server never bothered to ask us if its our first time, which it was. She didnt explain the menu and felt rush when she asked us what our order will be. Since it was our first time we asked for the popular item. She suggested the rissotto and we ordered the chicken. We started calling it bird seed rissotto after a while but it was really good. Chicken was grilled and had this sour cream sauce that made it perfect. Love love loved this place. We ordered the beef tartar, the endives, the mushrooms, the chicken and the risotto. All the food tasted great! The mushrooms were flavourful and the chicken was moist. The risotto was a unique creation but it worked! The dishes all came out one by one and we're shared so it did take a while, but I'm sure they would bring it out all at the same time. The home to the much anticipated Blind Enthusiasm brewing company has definitely raised the bar for Edmonton brewpubs. Our group of 2 couples visited on a bustling Saturday afternoon soft opening, and we were all pretty much thrilled. The first thing you notice is the striking building in the beautiful residential neighborhood near Mill Creek Ravine, apparently a part of the cities' "Cornerstone" Program to help bring commerce and social spaces to residential neighborhoods. The patio was full, but it was very hot so we opted for the high ceilings blessed with XXL ceiling fans. We we're lucky to get seats right away. The interior is just as striking as the exterior and I had to snap some pics. We arrived before the dinner menu was being provided, so we tried a few snacks. The menu was totally gourmet, but very reasonably priced. Everything was extremely elegantly plated and the food tasted amazing. We had sausage, spiced mustard and crackers and a portion of pretzel-like sourdough nuggets with some fantastic beer cheese. The beer... Oh my the beer... To be honest, I read so excited to try Blind Enthusiasm, and I enjoyed them so much my brain is a little foggy on the specifics. And I can't find their beer menu anywhere, so I will have to return for a more thorough review! But I tried all three beers on the menu, and the taste and quality was impeccable. They seem very influenced by Belgian beer culture, and the reverence for the clean and pronounced flavours really comes though on their brew. I look forward to fleshing out this review! Went in for a bday dinner with a table of 4. Took nearly 45 minutes to get our first drink. Plates are oversold to be something amazing but overpriced for what you get. We had 4 starters and 2 mains. Wanted the chicken but asked if we could pay extra and get fries for a side, which came with the steak dinner. We were told that they could not accommodate our request. If you offer it anyways and we're paying over $300 for our dinner, it does not seem like a big ask to charge us for a side of fries. Beef tartar just tasted like mustard seeds, over powering the entire dish. Dumplings were good but that was the only thing we actually felt like it was getting. Service was poor all night despite there being many servers working. Will not be returning. Do not waste your time. read more

Beer is good. They have rounded off the edges on all the flavors which is a good call to get their feet wet. I think they can sharpen up the dimensions of each beer as they get more feedback on the particular tasting notes of each beer. Food is tasty. A little pricey. The skate fish is pretty cool. Website needs some help. I had trouble making a reservation. Staff is friendly but a bit green. I am sure these points will be ironed out soon enough. This is the restaurant for the Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company. Don't expect pub food though. They bring the food level up several notches. You can order any brew the company makes, and that includes a sample of four 100 mL pours. They also have special brews, including one in partnership with Ritchie Market neighbour Acme Meat Market. We went for dinner, and the menu is set up for sharing plates. Three plates for the two of us was plenty of food. Where possible, ingredients are sourced from local growers and suppliers, and it shows in the quality of the food. The highlight of our meal was the Acme chicken cooked on their charcoal grill. Service was good, other than our server forgetting to put in our dessert order. It did come after a half hour wait, and they gave us dessert for free. I saw Avenue rate Biera as the best overall restaurant in Edmonton and decided to give it a go. It's Friday (mama don't cook night) around 7 pm and although we didn't get a seat in the main restaurant, they had several overflow tables and we were seated right away. Now, Indulge me with a little background info first... I met my wife 30 years ago working at a five star hotel in the Alberta Rockies. She was a journeyman chef who had just come back from winning a gold medal at a " food and hotels Asia " competition in Singapore. We dine out regularly and we're not strangers to well prepared food. I enjoy food a lot, I cook occasionally but my wife could on any given day, cook better than most restaurants. We watch master chef from 3 different countries . We like food !.... I really have a hard time believing the ratings this place is getting. It's new..ish, it's an interesting cool atmosphere and in a great walkable neighbourhood, and it's got beer ! What's the problem ? Some of the reviews mention the sourdough bread... A must try ! We mostly eat low carb but once in a while, we give in... we were served one slice of room temperature sourdough bread, cut in half and served with two kinds of butter . Fantastic butter, but butter/lard all the same. My wife's first thought when she saw the bread was "the emperor has no clothes". (come on ppl, $12 cold bread ?) Next came the squid. Well cooked and tender, nicely presented but some weird bitter glaze that tasted like burnt sugar and served with an aioli that didn't compliment the bitterness of the charred glaze. I'm not sure if this was the way it was supposed to taste but I needed beer to get the taste out of my mouth. I mentioned this to my waiter and his response was "oh, you didn't like it ? Thanks for letting us know " (wtf?). $25. The star of the evening was the feature dish. Asparagus wrapped in parchment, steamed with a butter and lemon sauce and served with a hollandaise on the side. This was truly fantastic. Not sure what the price was but should have ordered two of these. Our last dish was the duck, it was decent, nice sauce but the serving was small, $35 for about 3 or 4 ounces and came with a duck leg croquette which was over cooked and very dry with no dip or sauce. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things, I'm not complaining about the price, I assumed (in error) that the waiter would let someone know I wasn't thrilled with one of the dishes. Very disappointing. Food Service took both forever to order and forever to arrive. We ordered a $13 cheese plate but guess what - crackers are not included! Those were an extra $6. And they kept trying to remove the plate when there was still a good $5 left of cheese on it . When we finally ordered and finally got our food, it was very good. The waitress was the kind who pays most attention to the man in your party assuming he is paying the bill. She made eye contact with me once. Not sure if it was the place in general or just the really bad service but the cost is not worth going back to find out. :( read more

This is how it leads off, it might have been the time of night (Friday around 7pm), it might have been a new cook, it might have been the 2 chairs that weren't level that rocked my girlfriend and I into consciousness that the hype around Biera was only that... just hype.  Biera leads off with a mild price appropriate beer list which provides the proper libation to wash down the sorrows of the meal. (Id suggest the calmont ale for this).  We then ordered CHEVRE GRAND AFFINEUR with rhubarb apple butter pair to start as we decided on the rest of the meal. The cheese was sharp and delicious, a great start. For appetizers, We started the beef tartare after being reinsured that the tartare was on point after asking our server... you know how they vary from restaurant to restaurant. The presentation so so, a pile of beef with a yellow horseradish/mustard cream coating the inside of the dish, the flavour of sauce over powered anything that the beef could muster...d. Oh ya and the BC lobster mushrooms... thats about all you need to know. To the entrees, the Broek Back Berkshire pork and the Korean Style short ribs. The Ribs arrived first, the presentation of spring greens and radish made us dig for the cuts of rib. The Wort glaze had a wonderful flavour in it but the ribs were chewy chewy chewy, I wish they put the same effort into the slow cooking as they did the sauce. Both my girlfriend and I, still ravenous but weary of whats to come, jumped at  the pork when it was placed down minutes after the ribs... it turned out to be RAW. We tried an end cut and sent it back and the chef agreed, and removed it from our bill. Overall the only way I would be going back was with a crowd for beer, I'll give it some time to heal my sorrows. Hopefully it was just a one off but the bang for the buck... that quality is NOT there. read more

We have been here a few times now and wouldn't give it anything lower than 5 stars. The beer is fantastic, haven't had a beer yet that I didn't love. It's so refreshing to have a restaurant and brewery together that doesn't just serve normal pub food. All of the dishes are really inventive and delicious. I may have missed this on the menu but I would love if they did some kind of chef tasting menu that you could get beer pairings with. This would really push it over the top for us. read more

The venue itself is nice and the service was good. However, I didn't like how they had no hard liquor or bottled beer. I also found the prices quite expensive being that the food we tried (the Korean cut beef ribs, sourdough and kohlrabi rolls) was just okay. I don't know if I would be back. read more

Worth the price, perfect for sharing! Two of us had steak, potatoes and mushrooms and everything is served with the idea of sharing. It is prepared uniquely and with thought so the wild mushrooms were served with a slightly acidic, lemony butter while some were sauted while others were crispy fried and made for a surprisingly hearty dish. The potatoes were small potatoes with a flattened potato on top again playing with the texture and with a rustic beefy creamy gravy. The steak was perfect, it comes medium rare and with grilled leek which I could do without. The steak was perfect and juicy even with being pre-sliced managed to maintain its tenderness and flavour. We ordered a super hoppy beer which was great with the steak and the chocolate covered haskenberry marshmallow for dessert which had a wonderful gingerbread crust. All told the bill was 80 bucks (excludes tip) and it was enough to fill us up. You're paying for adventurous creativity here and in my mind, worth every penny! read more

Trendy warehouse style Brewhouse. Wooden chairs and wooden picnic style tables. Industrial feel. High carb food. Lunch is breads and cheeses only. The lunch prawn fritters were small and not worth the $14 price tag and too salty, such that it overwhelmed the shrimp, not recommended. The sourdough nuggets were excellent though. Beers are top notch. The German wheat beer tastes like the ones we had in Germany. Staff were very pleasant. Focaccia bread was too salty on the top. If you are a low carb low salt person, you might go elsewhere. But interesting concept focussing on cheeses. Dinners would be more balanced. read more

One word to describe our experience YUM!. We were pleasantly surprised arriving at Biera. We had no idea we would find such a gem in this area of the city. It is located in the Ritchie Market area, which has certainly seen a total upgrade to the amenities right in the heart is Biera. There is a ton of free parking in the area as well. It is a brewery which serves up its own brewed beers and a list of fabulous cocktails and OMG delicious food. The menu offers shareables, cheese plates and amazing desserts. There was 4 of us and we were celebrating my daughters birthday. We made a reservation (highly recommended) but when we arrived a table wasn't available. We waited about 1/2 hour for a table to open up. There is an area with tables to wait outside the restaurant, but indoors. The manager apologized for the wait and offered to purchase our drinks. Super nice. The drink menu has a very good selection but of course the feature is their beers and ciders they create. You can ask for tasters if you are not sure on what you would like. When we were seated the restaurant also comped a plate of warm sourdough bread with two kinds of butters. It was delicious. We ordered a warm winter salad, it had pear, kohlrabi, butter lettuce, parm cheeses petals with a warm creamy dill dressing that was not to over powering or too much, Korean beef ribs topped with arugula and pickled carrots and the ricotta dumplings. The food was absolutely delicious. The salad was my favorite with the Ricotta dumplings next. The salad had so many different components and the dressing was light and creamy. The dumplings were melt in your mouth delicious and were topped with a crispy swiss chard in a light and airy cream sauce. The Korean beef ribs were very flavorful. For dessert we had the Transcend Coffee pudding and it was amazing. A bit of tart sorbet served with a smooth espresso pudding topped with crispy espresso. We're not big eaters and the portion size was just enough but we did have the bread to start. Nobody left hungry and no one was over full. While we had a number of items comped the total bill came to $75.00. I would highly recommend Biera to foodies, couples, small and larger groups (they have 2 private dining rooms you can book as well). I went with two other women from work, and on the upside the atmosphere and location are great, but pretty much everything else was a miss. It feels like they try too hard with the food. It was pretty pretentious and sadly didn't taste good. The sharing plates were delivered one- by-one with an over-production that included a drawn out description of every ingredient. The asparagus was drowned in a sauce that was overpowering and made the dish taste like a weird vegetable pudding. Most of the food was on the bitter/sour end of the palette, which I guess is due to the German influence but meh. I didn't like the flavours. The bread dish covered in sauerkraut/onions was so strong and smelled so bad I had to move the plate. This could be a taste preference, but 2 out 3 of us didn't eat much. The flavours were also too similar. The real kicker though, and why I won't go back, is because once we told our waitress we didn't want dessert she promptly asked us to leave, as others were waiting for a table. Ouch and lol! We likely would have ordered drinks and coffee but alas we were no longer welcome. Considering our bill was close to $200 I wasn't impressed. read more

Loved every morsel. Four of us shared six dishes and three desserts and every bite was devine. The menu is perfect for sharing although no one was too keen to share their dessert. My personal favourites were the steak tartare and carrot cake with a salty topping but others chose the squid and puréed chorizo on toasts as their favorites. The beer tasting selection is perfect and, although only two reds on the menu, the wine we chose was delicious. Great atmosphere. I'll be back!!! read more
