Celebrated our Son's 16th birthday and spent the night at the JW Marriott! The service at Braven was excellent. The staff were very knowledgable, friendly and accommodating. We had the duck with risotto, truffle fries, pan seared salmon, and the homemade mac & cheese with chicken breast. All were excellent. Our server recommended a couples drink combo which consisted of the following: For him - Maple Old Fashioned: Bearface Triple Oak Canadian whisky, maple syrup, and Angostura bitters. For her - A savory-sweet mix of Ojo de Tigre Mezcal, passion fruit liqueur, blood orange syrup, lime juice, and a black salt rim. It was awesome. The hotel had an amazing gym facility and pool. I easily spent two hours in the gym as there was a variety of activities. Also, the decor was absolutely divine. Gorgeous lighting, and panelling throughout with a big open kitchen where you can see the magic happen. We would definitely stay the night again! read more

Decided to try out Braven for an early Birthday Celebration in the ice district. The dining area was very nice with a warm and cozy feel. Brenda was our server for the evening and seemed a bit pushy at first even though when we arrived there were hardly any other diners in the restaurant. But by the time we decided what to order she calmed down a bit and let us relax. I had ordered a vodka espresso martini. It was very impressive with a thick creamy foam head and a nice chocolatey taste from the espresso. My wife had a margarita which was also pretty tasty but a bit messy with the amount of salt on the outside of the glass. For our entree I ordered the 8oz. Flatiron steak and the truffle fries. Steak was cooked to what I asked for and was seasoned perfectly. The truffle fries were good but Way too salty and I could not finish them which was disappointing for the amount of money we spent on them. Something Braven cooks needs to perfect. My wife ordered the Beef short ribs, which she loved and so did I. It was fantastic! We would definitely come back here and If you're craving a steak, you definitely need to try Braven. read more

The strip loin and flat iron were amazing. I got it at a medium and it was absolutely perfect. After it was served to me, the chefs came over to me and made sure I was pleased with how everything tasted (I was sitting at the bar). The waiter (Aaron) also always made sure my water was full which I really appreciated. The ambiance was incredible as well! I came here recently to celebrate a special occasion. The place is a gorgeous place to take pictures since it is located inside the JW Marriott. They offer complimentary parking if you park in the parkade underground. Just go up to the restaurant after you parked to tell them your plate. Do not enter anything at the parking meter because it doesn't provide you a free option. For food, we tried: -New-York Striploin ($52)- the server said Braven was the only place in Edmonton with a hardwood fire grill for steaks. The steak was juicy and seasoned well. A bit pricey but pretty good. -Mezza pasta ($24)- pasta was made out of scratch and very yummy and fresh! Presentation kinda makes it look like Mac n Cheese though -Truffle Fries ($12)- Loved the truffle and cheese. Crispy and flavourful! Oliver's Carrot Cake ($15)- Not bad. It was moist and I liked the ice cream on the side. Nice presentation. There were some extra fees that we weren't aware of until the end. Such as $3 extra for peppercorn sauce and $8 for stilled water. Overall I had an enjoyable experience! Service was friendly and knowledgeable. We came here for our anniversary and had a lovely time. The service was very good, friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was stylish and upscale, but we had a booth so it also felt nice and private. The food was very good, delicious filet mignon and perfectly cooked broccolini. We ordered a bottle of the Bordeaux house wine, which was lovely and smooth. The highlight of the meal was the dessert, key lime pie with white chocolate and custard, just delicious! This place is very pricey and I'm not sure how much better they are than an average or even more upscale steak house, which is considerably cheaper. Finally. I ended up booking reservations just in case it was super busy on a weekday. Which it was. So I recommend booking reservations to make sure you get to enjoy this beautiful restaurant. We had a few drinks and shared a caesar salad to start. I found it good but I'll admit it wasn't anything crazy. Good caesar that you would get at any steak house. We then got a tenderloin and striploin steak and a side of whipped potatoes. The tenderness of the tenderloin to the striploin is worlds of difference. Go for the tenderloin. It was perfectly cooked absolutely amazing. The broccolini and tomato sides of the steak I felt like could really use some extra seasoning to give it the punch it needed to match the flavour of the steak. They were kind of cold and just flavourless. I would order the tenderloin again in a heartbeat and the ambiance of the restaurant is incredible. It is definitely a must go. read more

Located in the lobby of the JW Marriott hotel in Ice District, Braven did not disappoint! This restaurant was really popular so I would highly recommend a reservation here. The staff were amazing, so friendly so helpful and informative and attentive. I was so impressed with the service here, even the manager came over to ask us how our meals were. We decided to order a bunch of dishes and share them all so we could try many things. We ordered the cheesy cauliflower, beef brisket, wedge salad, a pasta dish with lamb, shrimp cocktail, and deep fried cheesecake for dessert. We were so impressed! The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, full of fresh complex flavours and so much food we couldn't finish it all between 3 of us. The prices for a restaurant of this luxurious nature were very well priced. I felt it was an excellent value for our dollar especially if you want something more upscale but don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Our favourite dishes included the wedge salad, the pasta dish (which was a large portion), beef brisket, and the duchess cocktail! How can I forget about the cocktails?! They are really yummy here and I would definitely recommend the duchess cocktail if you want something tasty that looks fancy in a coupe glass. Overall highly recommend Braven for a special night out, celebration, or just to treat yourself to something out of the ordinary. Make a reservation and go! We arrived in Edmonton and were craving steak for dinner. We booked this restaurant as there was reservations available. We were seated right away and menus dropped off. Our server got us water shortly afterwards. After looking over the menu, we ordered a number of items to share. We ordered the garlic and cheddar buns, smoked duck carpaccio, seasonal Canadian coastal oysters, mac and cheese, mafalda bolognese, AAA braised short ribs, bone-in striploin and banana split. Food took awhile to arrive. This is more of a restaurant to chill, chat and drink while you wait for the food to arrive. The garlic and cheese bun was pillowy soft with slices of garlic. We were surprised to find garlic slices, but it gave the buns that garlicky flavour. They could have served more maple butter on the side. The duck carpaccio has a strong smoky flavour. The oysters were from the east coast. I forgot which type, but we were able try two types of oysters. They were fresh and easy to eat. The house made pasta were tasty. The mac and cheese was super cheesy. The pasta was al dente. The mafalda bolognese was tasty as well and had a decent amount of meat. The short rib was tender. I did not understand why there was an onion ring, but the presentation was nice. The star of the meal was the strip loin. It was enough to feed two people. The meat was cooked medium rare as requested. Meat was tender and juicy. The mashed potato was buttery. The braised onion had a rosemary flavour. The broccolini was good. We finished off the meal with a banana split. It was also large enough to share amongst a couple people and was presented nicely with house made ice cream. Overall, it was a tasty and satisfying meal. I would consider this restaurant date night worthy or for special occasions because of the price point. There was street parking available nearby. If you are looking for a spectacular night out with a special someone or a special group of friends - this is THE place to go. I was treated to this amazing dinner by my wonderful group of friends for a very special dinner just recently and both the dinner and the company did not disappoint. It was the first time I had been in the JW Marriot and WOW the hotel itself is quite spectacular. When you are dropped off at the roundabout they greet you beautifully and treat you well. The restaurant itself is just around the corner and everyone treated us like royalty. We were seated immediately and our server, Susan and the manager Naveen were wonderful - always asking if we needed anything and ensuring the meal was up to spec. Between us we had the steak, the tuna and the cod... we shared the truffle fries (how can you resist), the salad and the dip. They substituted veggies for a gluten free option but didn't keep the chips for us. The dessert was fantastic for those of us who were OK with gluten. My gf had to ask for a gluten-free option - which is odd considered what a high-end restaurant this is. She was bought out a lovely ice-cream with berries (and charged extra for it) but there were no available options on the menu for her. Overall, we had a lovely evening. We had even started out at Alchemy - the speakeasy upstairs on the fifth floor and I will say if you are treating yourself to a night out go all out and take in the whole package. I'm pretty surprised by some of the terrible things I'm reading in the other reviews; but here I am to give a glowing review... because last night was nothing short of amazing. Fiancé took me out to celebrate my birthday last night (a Saturday night). We came early for a 7:45 reservation, and were seated right away at a very intimate table in a more private back seating area. Our waitress, Hannah, oh my gosh. I hope her managers, and their managers, and their managers read this. That girl is a gem, she created such an elevated dining experience and I literally felt like royalty the whole evening. That girl knows what it means to create a customer experience, and it wasn't because it was a special event (she didn't find out it was my birthday until dessert time), but she just went all out to make the night feel special regardless, without prompting. She was very helpful with the menu, made suggestions for cocktails, and was very prompt with her service. It wasn't until we were leaving that we realized she was managing that whole back area herself. She's a brilliant server. Now on to the food... Fiancé loved his lamb, I had cod... everything was flavoured and plated beautifully. I will say that the cod was cooked a little less thoroughly than I normally enjoy so that's probably just me and a matter of my preference. The taste was very nice though. One of the slices of my cod, though was "jello-y" is the only way to describe it. I had to pass that piece to the fiancé... I have no idea what that was, but it was not appetizing and to save my experience I gave that piece to him. Not enough to knock a star off. Come dessert time, Hannah asked what we were up to this evening; and Shawn mentioned birthday, and Hannah said, "well the dessert is on us then". We had chosen the dessert platter, not cheap, at $22. We added that to her tip, because that was so kind. But the dessert platter was so cute and they wrote Happy Birthday on it.... Anyways... and here's where it gets really good. Shawn mentioned that we wanted to check out the speakeasy upstairs (Alchemy). Hannah told us that during covid on a weekend especially the reservations would be packed solid and it would be unlikely we would get to go in. She left for a short time while we were clearing the Bill, and brought her manager Michael. Michael introduced himself, and said he managed to get us a table at Alchemy and had come to escort us upstairs. Michael was so professional, treated us like very special guests, told us neat things about the hotel and the speakeasy on the way upstairs. He is very customer oriented, so I can see how he ended up managing such a trendy and elevated local spot. We were so happy to go, and everyone was just so kind and wanted to make sure we were having the best time. The last thing I'll mention in this rave review is that normally we go away to Mexico or somewhere for my Birthday. Obviously not possible, but for a night I felt like I was on a vacation, as this didn't feel like Edmonton. Hannah and Michael made our night; and I would absolutely like to return. read more

Came today for a family birthday dinner. Food was exceptionally expensive which we don't mind except for the fact that the quality was below hotel restaurant quality standards. The 60$ sable fish was not fresh and had an aftertaste. The Triple A short rib was inconsistently cut. Mine was literally 3 times bigger than another person who ordered the same dish. I was at Braven for a friends birthday dinner on a Saturday. There were 6 of us and we knew it would be quite busy however it took 1 hr before we received our drinks and 2 hrs before we received our food. When we did get our food, all was amazing, we all did enjoy our dishes immensely. Braven is quite a large restaurant and very open so it can be quite loud, we didn't mind it but some people may not like how echoey it was. Overall I personally am glad I got to try Braven out but I doubt I will be back as the price point is on the ridiculously high end (my dinner was 45$ and my glass of wine was 24$, these were on the low end of the menu lol) the service was good but not phenomenal and overall I think there are some better choices out there. So I went here for Downtown dining week, so I am just judging it by that meal alone. Inside it is beautiful. Oak furnishings and accents, high ceilings, elegant décor. It reminds me of a library in England. What I didn't like was the lack of space between tables and how small the tables were themselves. We couldn't keep the plates, our drinks, and look at the menu at the same time. For a fine dining experience you don't have to load them up like a barrel of fish. Looking at the menu, it is fairly pricey so this would be for a big date night. The Downtown Dining week was much more affordable for 20 bucks we got a soup and a main. Food wise, everything was excellent. I chose the Habitant Soup with mustard and apple. For a Main I went with the Penne Al Forno - rocket & broccoli pesto, fior di latte. My friend went with Grilled Albacore Caesar - crisp romaine, cucumber, crispy teriyaki shiitake, pickled ginger, wasabi peas, sesame ginger. Everything was delicious. The soup was flavourful and rich without being overpowering. My penne was fresh and my friend's salad was zippy. I think I would have enjoyed the salad more, but both were really good. Our server though was not. She brought us our Cesar's, and maybe filled up our glasses once but wasn't to be seen. I definitely could have used some water. And the restaurant was not that full. So here is the issue, looking at the reviews it has a solid 4 star level, but then reading the reviews, for the premium price people were generally disappointed with the food, the service, the space or a combination of all 3. So I thought that I would not give them an easy pass and be the first person to rate them with a 3. I probably won't go back unless something changes. read more

Was hoping for something a little more outstanding from a Marriott hotel restaurant, but this restaurant is nothing out of the ordinary. It's a nice restaurant located in a very nice hotel, but for the price point, you are expecting an exceptional meal. My friend, who loves her steak tartare, felt the one at Braven was bland. The skinny fries that came with the steak tartare were fabulous though; nice and salty, just the way I like it. Reminded me of McDonald fries, but for double the price. I had the foie gras french toast, which I wasn't totally a fan of mixing the sweet and savoury, and the piece of foie gras was a little on the stingy side. The tuna tartare that I also had was a bit on the bland side. The lobster and shrimp mac'n'cheese wasn't bad. Upon seeing the serving size, you're a bit disappointed, but it's actually pretty filling, or maybe I just found it filling because I had just split two appetizers. Either way, I finished the meal feeling quite satisfied. The dessert menu doesn't really offer anything extraordinary, although they do have a huge black forest sundae that is share sized for 4. (unfortunately, I could not convince my friends to partake) I split my meal with a friend, and we ended up paying a little over $40 each. My other friend ordered the set menu, and we all felt it was the best deal, although the entrees in the set menu didn't really appeal to me. She felt the crab, shrimp and haddock cake was the highlight of her meal. I found her dessert (the sticky toffee pudding) to be too sweet, and she found it very filling. Excellent service. Food came out at a good pace. To sum up: expensive, not really worth the price, but a nice spot to have get-togethers or to celebrate a special occasion. My husband and I celebrated our 3rd anniversary @ the JW Marriott during the Sept long weekend. The JW is located in the new ICE District downtown Edmonton. Finding the entrance for parking was a little difficult. My husband had to park a distance and walk over to find out how to get to the valet. Once we did get there though the service was great. The valet drivers were very friendly and also helped us with our luggage. They insisted on taking it in for us. I haven't seen that service from the Fairmont even. We were happily impressed. We checked in and went to our beautiful room. We had booked reservations at Braven. We went down for our reservations and as we were heading over an employee came up to us and suggested a dish and wished us a great evening. We went to check in and they seated us immediately. The restaurant was very busy. After being seated our server came by to offer us anything to drink. Once we ordered we were very impressed with the everything we ordered. Serving sizes were great. I love tartares and this one was definitely at the top of my list. The pickled vegetables cut the richness of the meat and the egg. I do however wish they had more pieces of baguette for the amount of steak they give you. My husband ordered the soup and thought it was pretty tasty, very earthy.. the color leaves a little to be desired. We both ordered a flank state that was cooked to perfection, seasoned with salt and pepper, our sides of wild mushrooms and mashed potatoes were pretty average. The dessert was suggested by our server and it was mind blowing. perfectly creamy cheesecake and a well done phyllo cover. After a disappointing experience at Braven's sister restaurant, Kindred, I came here with lowered expectations. Thankfully though, Braven is very different from Kindred not only in ambiance but also in their menu. They have a dark cabin-style decor with old time-y framed photos and mounted stag heads. I was expecting SUPER fancy but I would say this is only kinda fancy, some people were still dressed very casually. Our server was very attentive and friendly. As soon as we were seated, we were each handed with a sizable drinks menu. As a gin fan, I was very impressed with their cocktails menu as they have over half a dozen interesting cocktails with a variety of gin. I choose to go with 'The Duchess' and it turned out to be delightful while still being quite strong. 5/5 I skipped appetizers and went straight to what I'd come there for: the meat! Again this was a hard choice as their menu is full of delicious sounding red meat and seafood dishes. In the end, I ordered the short rib which was served with polenta, some roast veg and gravy. And oh my god, it was absolutely perfect! It is a 5/5 dish and well worth the money. One of the reasons I decided not to give Braven a 5/5 overall rating is the sides ('Complements'). Together me and my friends ordered 5 sides and almost all (except the wild mushrooms) were disappointing and a little bland. Finally, for dessert I tried the phyllo wrapped cheesecake which arrived with an amazing fruit compote. Sadly we were too full to try the Eaton Mess sundae which looked absolutely amazing! I want to preface this by saying that I ranked it 4/5, but the experience was more like a 3.5/5 or 7/10. It's got a lot of kinks to iron out because the place is new. Right now it's just an insanely expensive average experience. This is the new restaurant in the JW, Ice District. Finding this place is difficult, as they have parking but at the moment it's not really complete. I'm here to save the day though, and get you through this maze. You park in the underground parkade off 103 Ave, near Stantec tower. If you blink you will miss this parkade due to construction all around it, so keep your eyes out. After that, go into the parkade, up to the main lobby of the Stantec, and it is directly across the street. Don't try to go in through the patio doors, they keep them locked. Go around the building to the front of the JW and then you will see it. There is a lobby bar, walk past the lobby bar and you are there. I feel the need to explain this because getting here was definitely a bit crazy. But, hey, free parking! So we get to the hostess stand, get checked in (you need to give your license plate for the parkade), and the restaurant itself is behind the wine wall! The decor is beautiful! We were seated at a nice four-person table, chairs were very comfortable! I just felt very fancy. If you guys know me, you know I like to pretend to be fancy when I'm actually not (lol). Our server was awesome, when she was there. She was running around like a mad-woman trying to handle all her tables. She did a great job considering the circumstances. It took about a half hour for her to get our wine to us, which is a pretty long time considering that we hadn't even ordered our food before our wine. It was at this point that I knew we were in for a rough 3-3.5 hours. But I get it, it's ironing out the kinks. We ordered a Burgundy ($84) and a Gamay Noir - the Gamay was the least expensive ($58), however, I think you're pretty safe in ordering any wine that is on the "cheap" side because the price doesn't really matter. It is very clear that they have spent the time to carefully construct their gorgeous wine menu! When looking through it I could tell that you're basically safe with any wine because of the time and care it takes to create a menu like that. All stunning wines and different varieties. I obviously preferred the Burgundy because I'm a boss, but the Gamay was delicious as well. I take a big issue with the size of the font on the menu. I mean, come on, why do I need a magnifying glass to read this? You have so much space and should make the font bigger! Even our server was squinting trying to read which items/wines we were trying to order. I totally get wanting to have a nice aesthetic, but this is hurts my eyes. We ordered a bunch of menu items to try, the Chargrilled Salmon, the Cauliflower, Onion Rings, Fried Squid, Hamachi Sashimi, mashed potatoes and the Rib Eye. I'm a pescatarian/mostly plant-based, so I did not try the Rib Eye. I was very impressed by the Chargrilled Salmon and the Cauliflower dishes. But I was totally taken aback by how BOMB the mashed potatoes were. I had to laugh because they totally stole the show for me. YUM! I was very pleased with the Salmon and Cauliflower as well. For dessert we order this Black Forest Eton Mess Sundae and it was so underwhelming. That was my least favourite part of the meal. It looks like you're about to stuff your face with delicious brownies. But what it actually is, is layers of whipped cream and a tiny bit of ice cream, brownies and cookies and a bunch of maraschino cherries to fill the space. Two big slices of some kind of merengue to make it seem like it isn't just a bowl of whipped cream. For $21, you're better off going home. So yeah, kind of an average experience for the first time. I'm definitely going to come back in a few months when they iron out the kinks. I like the space and I want to give it the shot it deserves. You can tell they put a lot of work into it. Right now, however, it needs some work. I wouldn't make it a regular spot until the future. I will, however, be back to spend a bunch of $$$ when I recover from this. read more

Upon entrance into the JW, it's truly an impressive site. The restaurant is hidden behind the lobby bar so it's a bit hard to locate at first. Ambience is beautiful, dimly light to be romantic but bright enough to read the menu. However, once in, it becomes quite loud. The ceilings are low and it traps the sound so even though everyone is having regular dinner conversation, it is very loud. First impression: 8/10. I know from experience new opens can be hectic and staffing is precarious so I imagine things can only improve here on out. When our server was at our table, service was 11/20. She was personal and attentive, but unfortunately not present enough. We did wait 10 minutes for a first greet, we sat at 7:11pm and our appetizers didn't hit the table until 8:10pm. By the time we left it was 10pm. Again, I do see the restaurant is busy and staff is running around everywhere. Our order: To start: Onion rings ($10), Fried Squid ($15). Onion rings are just that, nothing fancy. Fried squid is just badly battered calamari and slightly under-seasoned. The fried batter fell off the squid quite easily. Mains: Chargrilled Salmon ($34), Charcoal roasted Cauliflower ($21), Hamachi Sashimi ($23), 14oz Rib Eye ($65), mashed potatoes ($10) Wine: Burgundy ($84), Gamay Noir ($58) Our other two friends who ordered the cauliflower and salmon found their dishes to be really delicious and flavorful. There was 5 thin slices of hamachi underneath a heap of garnish which overpowered the delicate flavor of the fish (5/10). The steak was incredibly underwhelming which is disappointing for $65. We ordered rare and it came out medium rare/medium and was not well marbled for a rib eye. For the lack of marbling I would have thought it was closer to sirloin (5/10). Mashed potatoes were great. I chose not to send any of the food back because 1) I was starving and 2) it's a soft open so things won't be perfect. I think Braven has a lot of room for improvement if it truly wants to be considered a high end dining experience amongst some of best in this city (Butternut Tree, The Rd, Tzin, Woodwork, Sabor, Cibos, etc.) And not just an mediocre and expensive attaché to JW Marriot. I would definitely give it 3-4 months for the restaurant to iron out it's wrinkles before chancing another $400 on dinner again. read more

Checked out braven tonight for a date night dinner. I was excited because its reputation is that of a high class expensive posh steak house. Truth be told it was not as expensive as I expected but it also didnt live upto the hype. I feel like I got good value for my dollars but I also felt like I would have rather spent more for a better experience. We got 2 appetizers to start, the oysters with nasty sauce and the shrimp cocktail. Both were awesome although we had to really move the table around to make everything fit. Square footage is at a premium so we made it work with our wine glasses beside our plates. The mains is where it went south..... I ordered the ribeye medium rare, it came medium well. Our waiter was super attentive and got me another one and the manager came over to let me know he was giving me half off my steak... great but that's not why I sent it back I just want it cooked properly, it is a nearly $70 steak after all. It took almost a half hour. My wife was completely finished her entree before the steak came back. I should have ordered the burger or just eaten the medium well steak. I expected more from edmontons newest steak house. Overall it was still a good experience. My replacement steak was amazing even though I had to eat it alone. The sides and applies were awesome. I'm sure i will be back but I'll have to go back to ordering my steak blue rare because i will eat blue, I'll eat rare and medium rare but more than that i need to get a new one. read more

You've likely heard about Braven seemingly taking over the Ice District restaurant scene out of nowhere. Could it really be THAT good? Worth THOSE prices? Well my friends, without any ounce of hesitation, it is absolutely worth it. Atmosphere is great. Not stuffy or pretentious. Just perfectly classy. Service was exceptional, with several people checking in on our table. Our server Nick was refreshingly passionate. Now onto the food. Our table enjoyed steak, smoked chicken, and black cod, with some modification requests that were happily accommodated by our server. The black cod was my dish, and melted in my mouth just as I expected. I was honestly in heaven. Everyone was thrilled with their meals, and they were very decent portion sizes. And the steak was cooked exactly as ordered. We couldn't pass up dessert. Well, we could've, but when the mains are as good as they are, one must also indulge in dessert. Phyllo wrapped cheesecake, which was so unique being that the cheesecake was warm. Sticky toffee pudding with sour cream ice cream was my fave. Without a doubt, I will be back. What a delightful experience. We ordered the lamb sirloin, filet mignon and maple rum glazed black cod. Each dish was a "wow", from presentation to party in my mouth. Lamb sirloin was cooked to perfection. I ordered medium rare and it came out no more and no less. So tender and juicy along with amazing flavor. So smooth and soft to chew with a bit of charcoal flavor. If you're a lamb lover, this is a dish that you don't want to miss. Now the maple rum glazed black cod. As soon as it was in front of my eyes, it already had that flawless fish dish look that you can tell it's going to flake perfectly if you were to poke it with your fork. It was beautifully caramelized with the maple rum as well. And as I predicted, it flaked like a perfect fish dish would. Once it was delivered in my mouth, it was exactly how I envision a maple rum glazed black cod would be. Lightly sweetened with the fragrance of maple and just melted delightfully when it hits the tongue. Would order this dish over and over again. The mignon we had was probably one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. I felt like I was cutting butter and the sight of this perfect steak cannot be described properly with words. Again, the lightly charcoaled crust gave the steak a super delicious flavor. Grilled to perfection, this also melted in my mouth like the other two dishes. Overall, excellent experience. We went to Braven a while back for a special night out. First off yes, it is expensive. If you aren't prepared for that then go to Joeys around the corner. We had the Maple Rum Glazed Black Cod and the Beef Short Rib. Both were excellent. We split a bottle of white wine and shared the sticky toffee pudding dessert. Overall with tip our meal cost us more than out room at the Marriott for the night. On the surface expensive but the service was excellent, atmosphere impressive and it was a great special event night out. read more

If I owned a high end establishment downtown I'd be nervous right now. Located in the brand new sparkling JW Marriott is MasterChef Canada's Micheal Bonacini's new restaurant Braven. The amount of money spent on this spot boggles the mind. When you walk in the hotel there is a giant open lobby bar, and the two new Bonacini restaurants Kindred on your left and Braven on the right. The decor smacks of modern sophistication from the lighting to the tables and chair. Just outstanding. The restaurant itself is elegance turned up to 11. We get our table and go to work. The GF decided on a three course set option consisting of a cream of mushroom soup which as good as anywhere on the planet. Rich and thick topped with creme fraiche. Next a grilled salmon with tomato compote and a thick sticky toffee dessert. She loved every bite.. I went ala carte starting with the best fried squid I've ever had. Deep fried in a tempura like batter with a XO mayo for dipping. I can't emphasize just how perfect these little bites were. Amazing. Followed up that gem with a expertly cooked 12oz NY strip with grilled rapini and a creamed peppercorn and cognac sauce. Honestly just heaven on a plate. I probably wouldn't do the rapini again just a little too bitter and over charred for my palate, but no problem. Wrapped the whole thing up with a decadent cheesecake wrapped in philo and baked to a delightful golden brown. Top that baby with blueberries and you have a near perfect end to a meal. The service was absolutely top notch, our server Chrissy was incredible. For a place only opened for two days, she was really knowledgeable with the menu and super friendly. We had no less than 3 managers stop by our table and introduced themselves and make sure we had everything we needed. One of them, Ashley, even contacted another Bonacini restaurant in Toronto where we will be next week and told them to take good care of us. Certainly not a typical or expected touch you get at most places. We even got a couple glasses of Prosecco on the house when we first sat down. Above and beyond... You can expect to pay a lot or a little depending on how much of an experience you want to tackle. Their wines go from 60-1000 dollars. The list itself is a mix of old favourites and some new offerings. You can dine on the economically efficient side if you'd like or full blown extravaganza. Here for lunch, I enjoyed the Smoked Chicken Fusilli with creamy pesto, roasted peppers and mushrooms. The pasta is made in-house and it was cooked perfectly. The service was attentive and friendly and well aligned to the fine dining experience. The restaurant has a very classy look and feel. It has an incredible selection of unique meat dishes as well - perfect for the carnivore. I only wish I had another opportunity to eat here during dinner as the chops and steak looked amazing at the neighbouring table. First off, the JW is absolutely gorgeous. It feels luxe and sophisticated. So I assumed that Braven would be the same. The restaurant is very classy; however, the service was disappointing at best. Our server didn't seem to be aware of the menu, because when we asked what type of oysters they had, she looked at me like I was crazy. She also wasn't sure of many other things and had to keep running back to inform us. The food took long which I expected since they're new and it was busy, (8pm) but our drinks took even longer. I mean if the kitchen is busy, I feel as though the server should make note, and at least have the drinks rolling in to keep us distracted. Their drinks were pretty tasty. We ordered the Moscow Mule, The Duchess, Caesar, and Peach Basket. The Duchess is perfect if you're into something floral and not too sweet. Moscow Mule had a unique twist with coconut vodka, but if you're into ginger like me it was underwhelming. The Caesar was spicy and hit the spot, but the garnishes were pretty sad. For the food, I really enjoyed the oysters that came with what they call "nasty sauce". It's the perfect touch of spice and the flavour is unique. The mushroom soup was also fabulous, it was very smooth and light. For my main, I had the black cod which was probably the highlight of my experience, it just melts right in your mouth! We passed up dessert as we were too full, and did not want to wait any longer. For the amount of money spent $$$$, I would have rather ate somewhere else. I went here for a Christmas dinner with a few coworkers. The service was good and timely. Very attentive, although the server did mix up who wanted still vs. sparkling (didn't matter much to me as I'll drink tap water lol). We shared a couple of the appetizers, the mushroom goat cheese dip and the beef carpaccio. The beef was SO good! Not enough crustini to share though. I think we got 3 slices and there were 4 of us sharing. The dip was super tasty as well, but I was disappointed on the serving size. Maybe enough for each person to have a tablespoon of dip? I wouldn't advertise that as a sharing dish to be honest. Maybe enough for 2 people. Most of us ordered steak and most of us were pleased with the size and amount of food for our entrées. One of my coworkers had the ribeye and said it was "ok". We shared sides, which again I was disappointed by the serving size considering they are to be shared. I could have had an order of the truffle fries to myself. Which, by the way, were delicious. Also tried the glazed carrots and brussel sprouts which were equally delicious. To end the evening we all made room for dessert. A couple of my coworkers ordered the carrot cake which they swear was the best they've had. I, being the child at heart that I am, ordered the Chocolate Fudge Sundae. Let me tell you, that is for sure a 3 person dessert!! It was massive and made you feel like an 8 yr old all over again. It had alpt going on in it and every element was well made and yummy. I will say though, I was expecting hot fudge and instead got a drizzle of hard chocolate so thay part was disappointing. Anytime you advertise "fudge" you should have actual ooey gooey fudge like you'd expect in a sundae. Needless to say, I still managed to almost polish the entire thing off anyway as it was very tasty. All in all I think this restaurant has a great atmosphere and vibe to it. I would definitely go back for cocktails. The ingredients used are top quality. My only constructive criticism is the portion sizes. If you are going to advertise something as "shareable" than the portion needs to reflect that and be larger than a normal portion. Especially considering the prices. Food for thought. This restaurant is a must if you are looking for a great meal to accompany a special occasion or outing. I was beyond thrilled with the excellent service my girlfriend and I were provided, we were treated very well and our waiter was a standout in our night. I forget his name but he went above and beyond in order to make our experience enjoyable. Many of the other servers were helpful, one of which even taking some pictures of us and helping to get the right lighting and positioning. Absolutely terrific. The food was some of the best I have had in the city. We both had the 5oz fillet with mashed potatoes and brocollini as sides. The steaks were cooked to perfection and the presentation was beautiful. We topped the night off with a delicious Stuckey toffee pudding (with sour cream ice cream), what a great way to end the night. The drinks were nothing short of remarkable, my girlfriend and I both had cocktails (I had the Moscow mule) and they were very good looking and great tasting at the same time. For appetizers we had the tuna tartare and oysters to share. The meal however, was rather underwhelming. I ordered the beef short rib along with mashed potatoes and rapini sides. When my meal came out, the entree already was paired with these two items. Our server failed to inform us that, this was disappointing as I would have liked to try the other sides that Braven had to offer. Last night my hubby and I went there to celebrate our anniversary. The service alone was great the staff is very attentive and accommodating. For our starter, we had the crab cake and the beef tartar they were both delicious nothing was left on the plates.
