I do enjoy their potato salad, but I decided to try the "meat knot" today. The knot is just a pretzel with something inside. This one had like a slice of prosciutto or something. It was terribly overpriced at $7 and not worth it. It should be like $4.50-$5.00 and no more than that. It is a snack and not a meal. You can get a burrito in SF for $7, but a "knot" is not of that filling proportion, so I can't recommend a "knot." The potato salad is almost divine. If you remove the occasional long wait (I rarely come when it's super busy for this reason) this place has been and continues to be really great! A beautiful spot for relaxing with friends or family or a stop on a date! I've eaten snacks, lunch and dinner here many times. I'm not a big drinker so I often get mulled wine in winter or a radler or they sadly took away my favorite non-alcoholic drink which was the almdudler soda. They still offer other good beverages though. Their burgers are absolutely amazing, I highly recommend them if you eat meat. Their pretzels are usually perfect too! Their other foods are good albeit I'm personally not in love with their potato salad. Their restaurant down the road is a great stop for even heartier food or indoor dining. :) They do shared seating style so be ready to share a long table and benches. It's all very comfortable and friendly. (I have no idea how this will work out under the pandemic right now). They also will offer blankets when it's chilly for you to use. Restrooms are always clean. They're two private, gender-free restrooms with a hand washing station outside. Cute, chill spot to sip on some brew especially on warmer days. My bf and I came on a sunny Sunday afternoon and it was a full house. It's open seating picnic tables and it was a full house when we got there. Seating can be tricky so don't expect to find a full empty table when the weather's nice out lol. You'll either need to wait for a table or enjoy your beer standing. Thankfully another group was kind enough to scoot over and share their table with us. Beer's are pricey. There's nothing like spending a lazy Sunday afternoon playing drinking games with friends. Biergarten is the perfect venue for such an occasion. A fenced in open area bar right in Hayes Valley, this place has a very chill vibe to it. The beer selection here is decent enough and they have some really massive mugs you can order them in, which worked out perfectly for our intended activities. Another reason I had been looking forward to coming here is that they had also made a top 100 7x7 list recently for their pretzels. We ordered an assortment of them, and although the plain one was the one that had made the list, both the crispy pork version and the banana dessert option were far better. All of them had great texture and crispy outsides. The plain one came with a pile of minced garlic and a mustard that had entirely too much horseradish in it. Why the plain one made the list instead of the others is beyond me. Another cool part of this place is that they have lots of blankets to use for anyone who wants to use them. Definitely considerate of them, especially with how chilly it can get in Hayes Valley on a cold night. Overall, Biergarten is a great place to have some beers and snacks in a comfortable open area. So far of the few I've been to in SF, it's the one I like best. For this purpose I'm going to say that Biergarten is "as good as it gets." read more

Cute outdoor beer spot in Hayes Valley. A group of my friends came for drinks and food. We brought in a couple pizzas from Paxti's (right down the street) and ordered beer and wine from the counter. The space is an empty lot with lots of benches and tables, string lights, a roofed area, and re-used shipping containers (the counter and kitchen area). There's bathrooms as well on the lot. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. They even came by and gave us blankets. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

We came to this place as part of a pub crawl that a coworker put together. They are beer and wine only and are fully outdoor. We got here around 10 pm and it was freezing, we probably would not have stayed here if we were not a part of the group as we were too cold. We had a beer and the pretzel and their cheese app. I am not sure if I was misreading the menu or just assumed what I wanted but I thought the cheese would be a hot dip for my warm pretzel. I was wrong, it was cold and odd. It had a heavy blue cheese-ish flavor and I was not a fan. The pretzel was good, just like most bar pretzels. It came with mustard and fresh horseradish. I would recommend the pretzel but I would not get the cheese again. Many people with us ordered the pork sliders and seemed to enjoy them but this was our 3rd bar stop so I am not sure if they were delicious or just necessary. Found out these kind of place exist after going to the one in nyc and I love the environment! Grab a sausage and a litter of beer and have fun and be with friends or meet new ones! Staff are really nice and it's at such a nice spot in Hayes valley near a bunch of amazing! We got litter and half a litter of their dark and light beer! I like the dark ones better. I suppose if you really hate German beer and sausages and this is not the place for you, but even then it might be because you can still sit outside with your friends and eat pretzels and drink cider so really you have nothing to lose. All of their beer is German beer which is important to know, but if you like trying German beers this is a great place to try a few different varieties. You can also get full liters (those big steines you think of when you think german beer) which is always fun. They also have a bunch of different food including sausages and pretzels and sandwiches and pickles and other appetizers. I got the curry wurst last time which tasted like curry wurst! The pretzels were also quite good we also got potato dumplings which were quite tasty. The best part about this place though definitely is that it's all outdoor seating. They have big long picnic tables by lots of people can sit outside in the sun. They also have some of them covered with a tent though so if you have a baby that needs protection from the sun like I do you're still set. I totally disagree that this place is bad for kids. Maybe not good for kids I suppose but fine for babies - I was not the only one there with an infant. It's easy to bring a stroller in too. Only warning here is that it is pretty loud. Be warned! This place gets busy! So get there early. It's order at the counter and they give you your beer right there and then bring you your food but the line get so long it goes out of the garden and down the sidewalk. read more

This is a fantastic outdoor open area place that will surely transport you to Germany!! The atmosphere is ELECTRIC but a good kind of electric as everyone is happy and drunk off beer and not sloppy nor obscene. The food here is also BOMB!! Do yourself a favor and order one of their sausages (it usually comes with soft and supple fried potatoes -- THE BEST!!). Seriously the meat is just cooked to perfection. Big fan of this place!! A really cute, outdoor biergarten right in picturesque Hayes Valley :) I came here with two friends since we weren't that hungry for dinner yet! There was a line for people to order, but it moved pretty quickly! I'm not a huge fan of beer, so I ordered one of the ciders, which I enjoyed. The three of us also split a pretzel, which came with yummy mustard and spicy horseradish. There are a bunch of tables for people to sit at, and lots of people bring their cute doggos! As someone who is perpetually unprepared for the weather (from growing up in the Northeast to living in SF), something that I really appreciated were the large blankets they had for you to wrap yourself in as you enjoy your happy hour! For the beer lovers, this is the perfect places - and if you've been to Oktoberfest in Munich you know this too. Not a lot of places in SF have good german beer but I did find it at Biergarten. Also an amazing spot for warm, sunny days in San Francisco because of their open area. Only reason why I am giving 4 stars is because I did have a bit of a stomachache after eating their sausage with sauerkraut :/ It was delicious and nothing wrong with the taste when I was eating at all but I definitely didn't feel great afterwards. I'm not a huge drinker (but come on just get the big liter for the snaps) so I'll focus my review on the food, which I felt was pretty legit. I loved the bratwurst, especially with the potatoes. The pork belly sliders are a must. Throw in a pretzel into the mix! The Wednesday burger looked so amazing that I felt compelled to get it, but surprisingly not my fav. This is an awesome little spot with a crazy line! We lined up about 20 minutes before it opened, so we were able to grab a table quickly and get our beers and brats. The brats were delicious here, and the German beers were thirst-quenching! We didn't want to go back in line so we left after our first round. Plus, we were SO FULL and couldn't drink another sip of beer or even look at the food anymore. Really cool spot when the weather's nice in the city. They had 4 beers on tap (3 German and 1 by Fort Point) and come in two different sizes. Half a liter goes for around $8 and a full liter can be $18-20 depending on your choice. There's a good amount of seating but on a nice day in SF, the seats can fill up fast. There's also usually a line to buy your beer. I wouldn't mind standing when the seats are all full, but with a liter glass full of beer, your arm gets tired after 10 minutes. Great place to go with a group of friends or just a couple. The only bad thing I have to say is that they open at 3pm on Saturdays. Even though I ordinarily don't like mustard, it had a pretty light flavor and the type was actually tasty. It's not a Beer Garden, it's the Biergarten -- said some random hipster chick when I asked about this place a few years ago. To be honest, I thought it was gonna be super snotty from her answer and overall appearance from the outside, but was proved wrong and found it to be a very chill place to be with friends. I have come here several times during the week and got to say the staff is very nice and the food (a little over priced and small) is good for a pre game or light snack, but shouldn't be your dinner unless you want to spend. Pretty easy and simple concept -- a stand to order beer and food and a set of picnic tables to sit on. The beer selection is kind of small, but still hard to pick from--always ask for a sample bc likely they might not have the beer you usually order as the menu changes. If you are staying there the whole night, I would suggest the ~20 dollar liter of beer, but the half liter seriously does the trick. They only serve beer and wine so go somewhere else if you really want to get turnt. What makes this stand out from other beer gardens is that it is purely outdoor (oh the Lights, yes the lights are beautiful) and it is very conveniently located to the freeway and other restaurants. I would highly suggest getting here earlier on weekends or beware the wait/long lines. Very hard to plan things with big groups here as seating is limited, but definitely advise to try this place out. The line wrapped around the block and took us 20-30min before we got to the front for entry. My bf notices this and actually calls this DB out, "hey man, are you with someone or are you cutting the line??" bewildered man's response, "oh um, i have friends inside..." disgruntled bf: "dude i've got friends inside too and i still waited in this line to get in." so the guy actually acknowledged this and went to the back of the line...score one. so now we're at the front of the line, and it happens yet again...some b*tch just walks up and shows the bouncer her ID and the bf calls out this woman too... "hey i just chewed some a**hole out for cutting in front of everyone...you need to wait in like the rest of us." skank "oh i have friends inside," "WE ALL have friends inside dude!" and the girl must've felt entitled and was like "uh huh" & whipped her hair at this and proceeded inside. At this point we turn to the bouncer and ask if he's gonna keep letting people in and his lame response was "we just opened a few days ago, we're still figuring stuff out..." really?? i wanted to make the funny/dramatic point that society will start falling apart at the seams if he can't obey the rules of a line. i mean really dude, DO YOUR JOB. you're gonna have riots (not really,) and disgruntled patrons...this isn't cool. upon entry into the biergarten, we weren't 5ft in the door when it happened a third time and this time I was fired up and called them out...and yet again the response they felt justified cutting the line because "we have friends inside." man i guess i should've just done that upon arriving too... i had friends inside too but i still waited! grrr... ok enough ranting already... after all that hooplah, we still had a wonderful time. beer line was awful so i can't wait for them to figure that one out. i still would totally come back, i love the feel of this place. yay beer n pretzels! A friend of mine tipped me off about Biergarten - it's not too far from his house in SF. As a good German girl, I had to see for myself if this was a good drinking spot or not. The good: - Conveniently located right off the Freeway - even if you aren't a city dweller, you can find this spot pretty easy. Simply exit at Octavia from 101 and you'll see it pretty quickly. - Parking is easily accessible, even on the weekends. - It's always fun drinking beer out in the sunshine. - Very good beer selection. Not too many choices, but the ones they have on-tap are pretty good. - Fresh baked pretzels to go with your brew. Yummy! The not-so-great: - As with many outdoor patios, Biergarten gets pretty crowded on a relatively warm, sunny day in San Francisco. You definitely need to be aggressive when it comes to finding a seat. - Their Radler was disappointing. Having spent 3 weeks in Germany as an exchange student, I'm quite familiar with different varieties of lemonade/beer combos. This one wasn't good - way too sweet. Stick to the other drinks on the menu. - Once the sun goes down, it gets pretty chilly this time of year. Bundle up and bring a blanket! You won't regret it. I think my group stayed at the same table for about 3 hours and each time I snuck a peek back at the line, it never got any shorter! On a weekend, I'd say expect to wait at least 30 minutes to order your food and drink. That's the price you pay for doing something that everyone else wants to do in SF I GUESS! Other tips: -- They don't allow you to move their tables around even though they're oriented somewhat awkwardly. This was the first bar we stopped at during our visit to San Francisco and it was a cool spot. Super casual, outdoor beer garden type thing with picnic tables and somewhat of a shack set up where you went up to the counter and ordered your drinks. Mostly beer, you know being that we were at a beer garden but I'm not a beer drinker anymore so I was happy when I saw they had some wine options. Asked if their Rose was dry and the guy had no idea so he let me have a taste before committing and I was really glad that I did because it was definitely not dry and definitely not good. I'm also not a white wine drinker but didn't have much of a choice for non-beer drinks so I went with their Pinot Grigio and it was, drinkable. The weird thing was that they literally served it to me in a drinking glass. It was so weird, no wine glass, a straight up water glass. I would have rather a plastic cup, no lie. Anyways, the beer options were definitely great and the place was cool and low key but I wouldn't race back. I can imagine it's a cool spot to day drink and hang at night if you want to be outdoors and drink beer. Considering the super casual nature of the place too, it wasn't that cheap. read more

The idea of having a beer garden in the middle of a beautiful neighborhood is awesome, but there's just so much waiting! At Biergarten, you order your beer first, then look for a seat at the communal picnic tables... that is, if you can find one by the time you get your beer. The line to get the beer is long, especially on a beautiful Sunday when the sun's out for once. I only waited for about 40 minutes (keyword: about). My friends have waited for as long as an hour. Sorta ridiculous to wait an hour just to get a beer to sit outside. They provide blankets if it does get a little chilly! But I do get why people's willing to wait. Having a beer outdoors is just so much more enjoyable, especially if you can enjoy it from a legit litre glass. Only German brews are carried here. I do wish that they serve a bigger variety but I guess they are staying true! You can get the smaller size, but just get the litre. It's not worth it to go back in line just to get another and c'mon, you just look much cooler! There was a polka band (I think) playing at the time. Pretty cool! First time at Biergarten since living here! I've seen it, heard about it as a great place to go on warm nights, etc. When it was 80 degrees last Thursday, I decided to come. Lines were long, very long. My friend told me there as a separate line for food, so I went up to the front to look around, and when I asked the RUDE employee (the one with the long beard) about the line, he snarkily said yes, that's the line, you would wait like anyone else. I'm sorry, who taught you how to treat customers WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE? It's not unheard of to have two lines like you see at Shake Shack for dessert and all other foods in another line. What a d---. Suffice to say that was a mood killer for such a great day. So I had the gnome burger and a cheese knot. The burger was good but small and $7, and the cheese knot was just okay for me. We came here yesterday (Thursday) for happy hour knowing that it had just opened last week and were expecting a crazy line. We strolled up around 6pm and there was no line to get in! Prime HH time and no line? :) The line for beer was kinda long, but moved quickly. We ordered our steins of authentic hofbrau beer and found a picnic table for six. The crowd was really chill and respectful- no drunken, beer splashing younguns like I had expected. Food wise, I only had a pretzel. Overpriced and skipable. I do want to try a bratwurst next time though. The staff were awesome.. cheerful and always making sure to shoot you a smile if you walked by them.
