Insane Return Policy. I recently purchased a C45 Firepower Soft Air gun and discovered the product was defective the first time I attempted to use it (the magazine would release without touching the magazine release button plus the magazine loading door wouldn't lock and would randomly open spilling the pellets on the ground). When I attempted to return the defective item to Big 5 I was told that they only take returns in original sealed packaging. How can anyone know if a product is defective without opening the package? Unfortunately my experience was horrible! The Asst. Store Manager happened so to be this lady that was rude,and clearly didn't know how to handle Customers While she was under pressure. My phone order to hold a pair of hiking boots was made at 945am,store opens at 10am. I finally got over to store in Buena Park,off Knott Ave at 430pm. Just to find out at cashier stand that they had one size 5 and 6 in the box! So I couldn't buy the boots. Not only did I just spend $250 there,but Asst Manager didn't even offer a courtesy to get a discount on other hiking boots that were on sale the day before. She was super rude. I ASKED,may you please call another's store? She said no,but pulled a receipt from register that showed all the locations that had the hiking boots. So,once again her attitude towards me was very rude,and apparently not the best experience as a customer for me. I did find the boots in Cerritos. Here,I did buy a wagon,hiking poles,oxygen cans,and some slippers which was all on sale. For this, give them a two star! 1 for awesome sales,2nd star for the young man name Juan,who seen how it all went down,and offered to walk the big box wagon to my truck with me. This is a typical Big 5 location. They have a lot of stuff and it's usually at reasonable prices. The customer service is not top-notch and you may have to wait a few minutes to get some help but you wIll eventually get helped. It's usually worth the wait for their prices. Absolutely disgusting. Two days ago I came here to buy two fishing rods which I used for a total of 3 hours. Today I came to return the two rods with a receipt and all original labels and packaging. I was refused a refund because it was "used". This makes absolutely zero sense as a customer cannot possibly know if they would like the item if they had not used it. This leads me to question whether there are other shady dealings occurring in this store. I highly do not recommend going here as there are a bunch of other better sporting shops nearby with better customer service. Do not do business with these financially hungry pigs. The staff is downright rude, lazy, and clueless about their own products. It's like they couldn't care less about helping customers. The store is a chaotic mess, and good luck finding anything you need in that disaster. The prices are outrageous for the junk they sell. This place is an absolute joke. Located at the corner of Knott and Lincoln in a stand alone building in the corner of a little shopping plaza whose neighbors include rite aide, my favorite Tshirt place, Pine Hill KBBQ and Home Town Buffet. They are always fully staffed eith smiling friendly employees. This is my go to stop for excercise accessories. They have a good selection of weight lifting gloves, tapes, clothing, ect. They ususlly have a good sale selection of shoes in random colors and styles which is kind of cool. When I was rehabilitating my arm, I was able to pick up some light weights to help gain strength. If your not into fitness, they also have a good selection of camping stuff, survival stuff, outdoorsy things. It may not be the best sport place but Im a fan. read more

With the service I was given, I would have bought stuff even if the items weren't on sale. Professional, friendly, knowledgeable and not judgmental. Walked me around the store - found me items in the back storeroom, convinced me to try things on (hate doing that, rather buy and return or exchange if I have to) and made sure to let me know what was on sale and if something was due to come up on sale soon. I wish I remembered his name. Anyway - the store is a packed tight with merchandise almost to the point that it looks somewhat cluttered but it's at least an organized clutter. I didn't have to look for workout gear in three parts of the store. I didn't have to wonder if I was looking at women's workout apparel. If you're reading this - take this with a grain of salt - it's very likely not everyone working there will provide the service this guy did - but if they all did, this would be my go to place for outdoor and sporting goods. read more

I am very happy to get the harbinger weightlifting belt for working out at the gym, because I need to use it as they last longer than the old fashioned ones from the 80s. Also, I enjoyed wearing the back foam support for comfort on my back without bending over or improper lifting for lifting weights. However, I have been working out on my bodybuilding for 8 years since I was 15 years old. I still liked to ask one of the employees a question about fishing boots, if it's suitable for snow, but it cannot work of walking in the snow without any waterproof boots from insulation and real leather models. Lastly, I'll have the other weightlifting belt in case one of my family gets worn out, if they needed a new one, someday. read more

This was my first and probably last time in this store due to the manager's actions. I was there on 11/24/17 at approximately 4pm. The line was long and instead of helping the next customer in line the manager helped the last customer, who appeared to be a friend, cut the line and assisted him with his purchase. I was skeptical driving into the parking of this location today. We were looking for a pair of running shoes, knowing we just left another Big-5 location and they didn't have the size we were looking for. It was quite busy, there was a big shoe sale that started that day, yet after all the noise, the kind, larger Asian-American salesperson in the shoe dept, helped us as well as the other patrons out with as much speed as possible. The shoe, size and color we were looking for was definitely available there. Their back inventory is HUGE compared to other locations. This is the nearest sporting store near my place and it's very convenient- just a couple of walks away. While the store is located in a strip mall or mini shopping center, it has a plenty of parking spaces. The store is packed with huge selections of sporting products from footwear, fitness accessories, sporting accessories, etcetera etcetera. Oh and guns, woohoo, second amendment... IMO, the staffs have been very nice to me and to some others, in all fairness. The price are bit priced higher compared to some other sporting goods, but they often have sales and specials, so not too bad. read more

If I could sum up my experiences of the day: Shoddy service by inept employees. *sigh* I decided to go boarding tomorrow... and I also decided that I needed clamps and a new leash (sounds sort of S&M, come to think of it). I'd had many piss poor experiences at this location, but I happened to be near it today. I'd just whip in, pick up my purchases, and whip back out. I shouldn't have to deal with crappy employees if I made it quick. Oh, how wrong I was. I circled the tiny store twice, but I honestly couldn't find one area of boarding accessories. Looked around for salespeople, but none were around. I finally tracked one down by the running shoes and solicited his help. "Where do you carry snowboard leashes and clamps?" "Um, let me show you." He takes me to the snowboard area (which I already checked), and mutters in confusion to himself. "What did you need?" "A leash and clamps." I was patient, I promise. Still confused. Moving random beanies around. He holds up a rubber stomp pad that is clearly labeled "STOMP PAD." After glancing at it for a sec, he asks, "Is this what you were looking for?" "No. That's a stomp pad. I need a LEASH and a CLAMP." "I don't think we have much of anything right now." Damn, one star for you, Big 5, for having no real inventory and no really knowledgeable sales staff! "But," dude continues, "you should check out Sports Authority on South Street. I purchased some Everlast hand wraps from here 2 weeks ago. I used them 2 times. And after the second use, I noticed the stiching had come undone. I decided to return them. But I lost my reciept. I wen't into the store, explained my problem. The AM walked away, came back and let me exchange them for a new pair. The product was obviously defective. The cashier says $20, I say no the price tag says 14.99. Cashier says "No you need to check the model number" . They didn't have a wide selection for women, which was a bit disappointing, but since these cleats are actually for my kickball games I wasn't looking for anything fancy. Since I'm signed up for their 1 day deals through email, I always see what deals they have. Today they had a flat bench for sale. I drove in and was lucky to find one. The minute I walked into the store, a young Asian man approached me and asked how he could help me. I should him the coupon for the bench on my phone. He was able to locate it very quickly. His co-worker, another young man helped him by confirming the SKU number so I was getting the right product and even carried to the register for me. Because the wi-fi was down, the young lady at the register was able to find the coupon code for me to use. Overall it was great customer service from all the three workers who helped me today. Don't bother calling to check stock they have lazy employees I called store to check stock on a Wondershade and Laura advised they had plenty in stock but called back advised her to put one on hold and I would have father come pick up she stated ok. He went there and was advised they were out of stock. So apparently Laura lied and never checked great customer service I will be sure to spread the word to shop elsewhere.
