Service is seriously lacking. Walked into the store with an employee right by the door, instead of a traditional pleasant greeting, I was given a snarling glare as if my presence interrupted her afternoon. As I walked to my desired department, I saw another employee who also did not greet me or ask if any assistance was needed as I held shoes in my hand. Rather than say hello, he walked behind me (narrow aisle) and into the employees only area twice without saying a single word. I sought out a third employee to help me with grabbing a pair of shoes from the back. Her tone and body language made it seem as though she was above helping customers and was frustrated that I asked her for help. Her tone was extremely short and snappy when I asked for a two different sizes to try on. Needless to say I didn't buy the shoes after she handed me the item to try on and walked away. read more

Employees will not greet you based on a 'certain' appearance even when you say hello when you enter the store but will walk over and stare at you. Last Sunday my boyfriend stopped in with me to exchange some shoes I had purchased at another location that were uncomfortable with my original receipt, since Michele M mentioned I could do so. It definitely saved me a trip since I had purchased them from their location in the Bay Area, phew! The shoes my boyfriend helped me pick out were just $15.95 on their sale rack and were available in my half size! I saved $3.99! The staff were very sweet and helpful and the store was completely organized, in stock and clean, which is a big plus! Given a budget to purchase whatever boots I wanted at Big 5. Spent quite a bit of time reviewing the different models while waiting for a store close by to have them in stock. This wasn't my first choice, but they fit better than most others. I had to step down into an 11.5 when I always wear size 12. Did the leather protecting thing to protect the uppers and finally had the need to wear them about a week ago for some serious garden restructuring. Got into moving dirt around to build a retaining wall and several hours into the project, I felt the boot come apart while putting pressure on the shovel's rolled step. Called up the store and they said my 30 day window was closed, but I could bring them in to try to get an adjustment. The side story to this is that Big 5 reviews on this boot are all four and five star. I should have noticed the most recent review is over two years old, but this is a normally stocked boot? After a lot of researching, waiting, then running around to get the boots, they end up being garbage. Combine that with another Big 5 employee telling me, "good luck with anything but a four star or better review". Apparently only good reviews matter to Big 5. read more

After striking out with terrible quality no-name import kids shoes online and at big stores like Target, I went to Big 5 more out of desperation. Found some good shoes that wore better than the no-name junk. Then I went there for soccer cleats for my kids. Their selection wasn't huge (mostly my fault, because it was right before the season started so there were slim pickings left), but what was there was known brands and the prices were decent. I've since found myself going here more and more, to the point that they are my go-to store for sports gear and equipment, camping equipment, and all other outdoor stuff. They have what I'm looking for about 95% of the time. I've interacted with their staff several times and they've always been friendly and helpful. I had the worst customer service from the so......called Manager (Tim Denson) and a cashier (She did not have a name badge on). I strongly believe that their poor customer service/ behaviors those not represent the core value of BIG FIVE. I made a purchase from the store on 7.12.13 and returned the item for an exchange on 7.13.19 for the right size, I also made additional purchases on my new visit. At the point of check out, Tim Denson was the cashier, he did not refund me for the transaction I made on 7.12.19 before proceeding with the new transaction on 7.13.19 Rather he subtracted the price of the item that I bought on 7.12.19 from the purchase that I made on 7.13.19, however, he did not refund me the taxe of the purchase that I made on 7.12.19. I was going through my receipt the next day and observed that he did not refund me the taxe that I paid for the purchase that I made on 7.12.19, I went to the store to enquire about it. I was next in line for the returns, I approached the cashier and explained the reason that I visited the store, she did not even look at my receipt and told me that the taxe was already included in my purchase on 7.13.19, I asked her how? she gave me attitude and offered to get her Manager Tim. Tim was called and I re-explained the reason for my visit, again he did not look at the receipt and advised me that the taxe was accounted for on the purchase that I made on 7.13.19. I could not comprehend/ what he was saying does not make any sense, I asked him to look at the receipt and explain to me how? he got very...defensive and told me that he will not explain it to me and that I should contact their cooperate. I insisted that he explain to me how I was refunded of the taxes, he started going off on me and advised me that he was going to call the security. I don't usually write a review of this kind, but I think it is very important to share with the general public. 1. He could not mathematically explain to me how the taxe was included to my new purchases, I know that one of the requirements to a Management positions is that one should be able to do a basic math's. 2. There was no need to be very.... disrespectful, unprofessional and defensive when asked for clarifications. 3. I reached out to their cooperate, they were very apologetic and assured me that they will follow up with him. Hopefully they will be able to train him on how to do basic math's and how to provide great customer services to customers. I came in here to get a cooler for a work event.. I was not greeted when I walked in the door, okay fine whatever, I don't care about that. However, when I was looking, I overheard a customer ask a female employee, I didn't catch her name, but she had long brown hair and glasses, the customer asked her for some help. The employee was EXTREMELY rude to this woman, rolled her eyes at her.. a lady who simply asked a question and then mid sentence as the woman was going to speak to her, the employee walks away without saying a word. It actually caught me so off guard as I watched it happen. I had someone helping me get my cooler down or I would have left as the woman did immediately. I told her that the employee was extremely rude and disrespectful towards her.. and I almost did not purchase anything because of it as well. The lady said she wasn't going to buy anything as she was "afraid to ask another question" because of how rude the employee was. Then, as I'm walking to the register, the employee is gossiping with her other coworker at the front about it. I listened for a brief second .. she then stated how she "may get in trouble for not being in the right uniform(shoe wise)" I believe and I said "no, but I hope you get in trouble for being extremely rude." I work in customer service and to have a customer walk out because they're afraid to ask another question due to the response of the employee is beyond me. If you don't like your job, don't work there. Plain and simple. I will not be coming back to this location due to the behavior of this female employee, who also had other employees watching as this happened. Absolutely horrible customer service. read more

I was advised to not bother wasting my time shopping here. We found almost everything we need, but we weren't able to get everything because of the lack of size selection. Manager doesn't know the laws regarding ammunition sales, they were out of basically every type of ammo you could think of besides 22 and 12 ga. They didn't have .45, .38 , .380 or ,9mm. I tried to purchase a box of 22 and after filing out all the paper work he asks if my address matches which it doesn't and says I have to bring in a govt document that matches which I don't have obviously but he conveniently offered to sell me a hunting or fishing license and that would meet the requirements. I find that strange since I had bought ammo at 2 other real ammo stores the day before with no issues. Seems like a scam to me read more

I went in there last minute to buy a father's day gift, I was not greeted when I walked in nor was I asked if I needed help, etc. Mind you I have never been this location so the set up was foreign to me. I find what I was looking for, so i check out. I overheard employees talking as if they possibly thought I was stealing. Checking my items at the register making sure I did not sneak anything in them. As well as making comments like "they are checking the videos" "what's that in her pocket?" And then an employee taking a photo of my car as I was backing out of the parking lot. I honestly found the whole situation offending. I spent $77.00 that I wish didn't even go to that company because the way they made me feel when I was in there. I do not recommend this location. I have been getting my kids baseball equipment here for years and have not problems getting what I need. I needed white baseball pants for my son and they did not have his size. An employee on the floor had asked if I need help and she was kind enough to find the pants we needed in the back. At this point things we down him. I could not find shoes in my sons size and did not see anyone on the floor, so I went to the register to get assistance. Caitlyn who was working the register was completely useless. I told her my issue and she waived her hand and said they were in the back with the rest of the shoes. Obviously they were with the shoes, but I was having trouble finding his size and told her so. Her response was to go to the back and find an employee because she could not leave the register. There were two cashiers and there were no other customers in line. Came here last night with my friend to get an fsc + firearm at about 5:40. Clerk behind the gun counter was swamped; when we let him know what we needed, he told us he wouldn't be able to help us that night because they close at 7, the process to take the test + sell the gun takes over an hour, and there were already like 5 people ahead of us so we just left. Next day we come back at 1. Nobody at the counter but clerk tells us someone will be with us in about 5 minutes. 20 minutes later, someone comes over and tells us they aren't issuing fsc's now. I could understand the guy getting it wrong last night, or even that they stopped issuing them overnight, but there is a sign over the counter that says they issue them and they couldn't even be bothered to print a piece of paper that says we stopped issuing them. read more

I recently was in the market for skiing pants. I visited REI, very expensive! not a very good selection! I tried Walmart, target, Ross, Burlington Coat Factory and Costco. all were either out completely or had a very limited selection. I called Big 5 and they said they had a variety to choose from. they sure did, and at a very good price $35.00 good quality snow pants. I'm happy! I'm leaving a 1 star reviews for big 5 sporting goods stores due to the corporate policy for not helping a customer who is stuck with a product that's not working but purchased driving back and forth 3 times and the corporate won't even help a customer with a simple refund due to their policy. Purchased a case of crossman co2 gas cartridges and 500 pellets. Inserted co2 cartridge into my barely used, used 8 of co2 cartridges in its life time which is fairly new, a crossman brand air pellet gun which was purchased at Big 5 sports good store a few years ago. A brand new crossman 5 of co2 cartridges and one cartridge came empty while the others were good and full. I tested the gun and the gun was working but I was not happy at the fact that one of the co2 cartridges came empty. But the store employee said they don't take used co2 cartridges but I told the employee that one of the cartridges were already empty before I got to use it. So the emoyee exchanged the whole case for me to a different brand, Daisy which I requested to avoid another defect or an empty co2 cartridge. As soon as I tried the first Daisy branded co2 cartridge, the gas started to leak. So, I took the cartridges back again and they were blaming the broken gun this time. As they tested out all the co2 that I purchased, they tested the gun with another co2 cartridge and the gas started to leak too. I was frustrated due to the fact that I was not able to use the 5 co2 cartridges but I came back home with 5 empty co2 cartridges which was paid for but used all 5 co2 cartridges to test at the store. So, I'm a customer who purchased co2 cartridges but the store emptied them out for me to test the gun out. Now, I'm stuck with a broken gun, all empty co2 cartridges due to testing at the store and 500 nonrefundable pellets. Called the corporate to see if I can at least get a refund on a $7 pellets that I'm stuck with. But the answer was a big "NO". So, I never got to use any of the 5 co2 cartridges but tested to empty at the store and I'm stuck with 500 pellets just because I wanted to test it out once. I think I need a refund for the pellets and the co2 cartridges that was never used by me. I'm leaving a 1 star review due to the corporate policy. read more
