This place is a hot mess! Clutter ! I went to Sports Authority across the street to look for some golf apparel/gear and didn't have any luck so I thought that I'd try Big 5 since I'm already in the area. Went in and it's horrific. There were clothes and equipment all over the floor. The employees weren't all too help either. It's just a sad cluttered mess. I felt claustrophobic! The hat area (I was looking for a hat) was just a huge rack of unorganized and outdated hats. Never coming here again. read more

Great customer service! There are always more than a handful of employees around the store to help anybody who has a question. I stopped by this store two days in a . Firtst to buy tennis balls and the next day, a basketball I saw one sale for $19.99. I found courts with both basketball and tennis courts right down the street from big 5 where I;ll normally be for now. I miss playing competitive sports! read more

Been here a couple of times with my father and brother as long as I could remember whenever it was sports season back in middle school/HS. Couldn't remember much. But a couple of days ago I went in and inquired about one of their rifles in the Sporting Goods section and the staff was very friendly. I didn't mind though that the manager was teaching two other employees on what to do on firearm purchases. They also let me choose the rifle out of the ones they had in the back. I'll update when I get my Mosin Nagant in a week :). There is a parking lot, but its a bitch to get into because its always crowded in that area and you could wait forever trying to turn left coming in from South City Gellert. read more

I like Big 5. It's a tad cluttered, but last year I found really great deals on snow gear. Can't beat the deals they have. Today I went in to buy a gift for that special someone for Christmas. I was over in their sporting arms section which was pretty crowded. I was waiting there for maybe 5 minutes while the two employees behind the desk were helping a few cats. Kelsey,I believe she is one of the managers, saw me waiting and came right over to help me. She is a sweetheart. I walked to the checkout where there were two girls working one register, I believe one of them was being trained. Well, they kind of messed everything up. I asked for a gift receipt which they forgot, so they voided the transaction and asked me to swipe my card again only it wasn't working. They kind of just laughed and pressed a few keys, freaked out a tad, didn't communicate with me about what was going on while the line was starting to hit the racks. I felt my face turn a bit red during this process. Finally they called over one of the managers who was on staff; I forgot to get her name but she was so friendly and eager to fix the situation for me. Hint on who it was- she was wearing a loony tunes tie; both creative and fun! She fixed the problem and gave me a 10% discount for my troubles. She also apologized more than once which showed she really cared. The impression I got from my visits here is: -they have awesome deals -lots of ammo and fire arms to choose from -great supply of everything else needed to camp, hunt and ski/snowboard -the manager's of Big 5 deliver excellent customer service. read more

Whenever I walk into any Big 5, it feels like I got transported back into the early 90s. It wouldn't be logical for me to say that it transports be back to the 70s because in the 70s.. I was barely a thought. Anyways, Big 5 makes me think of Old school type of stores.. The carpeting, the lighting, the counters, the shelves. It's nothing bad, embrace the old and new. The customer service from the manager was poor. I waited patiently for service at the Ammo center. No one came so I approached the cashier who buzzed a manager when I asked about CO2 refills. After waiting for 5 minutes, the manager with a backwards hat approached me whom seem bothered by my question regarding CO2 refill. The manager said Big Five doesn't do CO2 refill and proceeded to tell the cashier "don't call me unless it's for guns or ammo". Not sure a manager should belittled the cashier in front of everyone. Place is a junkyard of low to mid grade sporting equipment. Nothing is organized and nothing is really what you want, unless you are looking for the entry level version. I gave them an extra star because they have great selection of shotguns. read more

This young mexican boy who was wearing glasses at the time was so nice to me he guided me to the right place for all that I needed the HUGE complaint I have is for the manager to stop following me everywhere I go it's creepy to see a man follow you while trying to buy basketball hoops for your kids. One of my favorite stores ... You can buy many outdoor things along with some guns and ammo. Staff are always helpful. Some items here are a little pricier than Sports Authority or online .. Make sure to do comparison shopping of what you are looking for. The retail space is so little and merchandises are over flowing so much that hardly a place to walk without bumping into things (in case of earthquake, it will be impossible to get out). In case of other natural disasters, I rather be here since they got guns, ammo, arrows, bows, shelter, sleeping bags, clothes, shoes, socks, batteries, freeze dried food, stoves, life rafts, life vests, and if you get bore, you can play with RC helicopters, board games, or lift weights. This place has everything immaginable including good staff. They were slightly short staff when I came in today to pick up my ammunition which was on hold for me by the Management ( whom was very professional) 2 days ago. They are courteous and professional with an excellent stock. Perfect parking with a large parking lot and closeby Serramonte Shopping Center and food places. This is like the Radio Shack to the Best Buy, but way more cluttered. It's easier to sift through the larger items to quickly make your selection. However, things like work out gloves for lifting- not so much. Nothing is in order as far as the majority of sizes and styles go. Get your "thrift store search" skills on here. Some craftiness to find the right size and style lodged in places it doesn't belong are necessary for smaller items. If you need some help, the people are nice enough to assist you. It's really all they have locally for the Daly City/South City area since Sports Authority has apparently been replaced with a new condo project. (Booooo...) This place is MESSY! Things are out of place, very hard to find what is where unless you've been here before. It was a couple days before Christmas if I remember so customer service was all busy assisting others. Not recommended for browsing in this particular store. The prices are amazing compared to a recent visit to REI and a little on par with Sports Authority (while on sale). Came here looking for snowboarding gloves and everything were on sale, so being the picky person I am, it was very hard to find one that I really liked. Soccer season is looming. So, I took the kids to Big 5 last night to see if we could find soccer gear. I walked in a little confused about where things were located. But, it's a small store so I decided to read it like a book...from left to right. Behold! There was the soccer equipment on the left side of the back wall. There were 3-4 big signs posted which read "Soccer Packages". How cool! Everything I was looking for in one package (cleats, shin guards and balls)! So, I gathered up everything from the $34.99 package (found tons of pink for the girl...too cute!) and brought it to the front. The cashier rings me up and request like $48.00 from me. Now, didn't I just tell you that I had the $34.99 package??? So, why didn't she know that.? OK, rather than ponder the obvious, I just told her that I was purchasing the package (and I don't even work there). I even pointed to the big old sign. She needed a moment to comprehend what was going on. I gave her that moment. She needed another moment. I gave her that too. This cashier was just the weirdest thing ever!! Why did they have her working up front??? I don't even know. She was caught in a headlight, caught in a daydream, recovering from a wild night, high off her rocker, very cold...she was something that I couldn't figure out. She even had this way of looking right through me rather than at me. It was weird! Even her voice was very robotic. Maybe she was an android??? If so, she wasn't a very smart one. Because while I was spending all this time (maybe 2 minutes...but, it felt like forever in iRobot world) trying to figure her out...she was still trying to figure out my package. Finally, she got a clue as to what she needed to do and sent me on my way. All in all, I was very pleased with the price. Customer service is "OK". When I had a question, the guys in there answered it quickly and accurately. (funny, the guys in there all look alike...they've got this Vanilla Ice thing going on). But, there were no volunteers to help. No employee asked if they could help me find something or even said "hello". So, if you are a self-serve kinda person like me, then self-serve yourself a soccer package at Big 5. If you need ANY real assistance, go across the street to Sports Authority....before the androids conquer their world too. read more

This big 5 sucks - On a recent visit I was interested in a rife they had on sale. The person who was at the gun counter couldn't answer some pretty basic questions. Trying to actually purchase anything is frustrating - they only had one cashier on duty we got stuck in a line 7 people long while she tried to figure out how to process someone's fishing license application. Got two pairs of running shoes for Christmas that did not fit. I went back and exchanged them for new models with no hassel. The customer service was excedllent, even though I was just returning I was still treated like a valued customer. Plus I bought the same ASICS at nordstrom for $100 the year prior and here, only $45 buck. Stellar! read more

This is a good place to buy small hiking backpacks ... the ones that they carry here are very cute and look nice . Their shoe selection and workout clothes selection isn't that great . Besides their small hiking backpacks , there isn't really much to buy at this store except guns . Prices are cheap and affordable but Sports Authority has a better selection . read more

I think that is a perfect thing to buy from Big 5 after you shop here because you might want to shoot yourself afterwards. No one here is happy- whether you buy, exchange, or return. While Big 5 is an acceptable store for bargain shoes and sporting goods, it has the worst service of any sporting good store I've ever visited. Normally I would visit Sport Authority next door for the much better selection, but I needed a shotgun and Big 5 had it on sale. I went in 10 days ago, paid, and expected to pick it up today (self bday present). When I went in today at 3PM after some 30 minutes of driving, the clerk told me that the DOJ website was down since last night and they cannot let anyone pick up until tomorrow. I asked the clerk that the number of people picking up on this same day is probably in the single digits, so why didn't the store at least give me a call so I could avoid the 1 hour trip? The short answer was "we do not have time to call all these customers" and "your idea is a good one" ......... Looking at the previous reviews and looking at their workers today, it is painfully obvious to any reasonable person that they are well staffed enough to spend 15 minutes and let a few customers that spent $400 know not to waste their time and gas coming in today. Now I will have to make another 1 hour trip to wait in line to pick my gift up; suffice to say I will never visit this particular store again and already submitted a complaint to their headquarters. I remember back in the mid 90's when Sportsmart (Sports Authority) opened up right across the street and everyone was saying that Big 5 days were over. Almost 20 years later and Big 5 is battling it out with the bigger sports store across the street. Why do I like Big 5? It's the original sports store of our area. Many childhood memories flow through this store. My first bb gun that my parents bought me and my parents also bought me some spalding shoes here back in the day when you didn't know any better! It's amazing to see Big 5 in it's original location. The store has been there for as long as I can remember. I'm talking about back in the day when the movie theatre existed where Ross and Petsmart are. Sometimes I just walk in the store to venture back into nostalgia. read more

These guys are awesome! I came in here to look for some work boots and i got exactly what i was looking for! i was helped right away by two guys named Kevin and Matt P. They were quick and seemed to very knowledgeable in the footwear department. Once i got my shoes i strolled over to the firearm department where the manager, Kelsey, helped me and answered every question i had with the knives and guns, 5 stars for her! Once i was done shopping i went to the register to be helped by a boy with big gauges in his ears, i think his name was Evan, anyway he was very polite and had amazing hair! great experience and i'll be back next time i need something in the sporting good world! read more

As I was purchasing my (awesome) new fishing rod, I had a short chat with one of the employees working the register (Anna or Analyse or Annabel or something).
