This store has the worst customer service. As soon as I walked in, I greeted the cashier Heydy but she completely ignored me. When I asked about cleats, she vaguely responded that they only had one and that my chances of finding it were 50/50. My husband later discovered the shoe in the clearance box and asked for the price. When we inquired about an additional discount since it was in clearance, she dismissed the request, claiming they didn't know the price because the tag was missing. The crew working here is really chill. You know those $10 off your $30 purchase mailer coupons? I think they only deliver them to house addresses, not apartments/condos, but I'm not certain. Anyhow... So the hubbins went in for a knee brace (5/3/19). I had no clue how much those things were, and I gave it to him anyway. He presents it to them at the register even though his brace is like $19.99 and they still gave him the discount. Rad! He later decided he needed to exchange it for a different size. Done with no issues. Or as all the weird primary kids/teachers say, "Easy peasy lemon squeez-y." In the past, Big 5 has been hit or miss for different stuff, but it has potential. read more

WHO DO I TURN TO? Toys-R-Us is gone. Sports Authority is gone. Big 5 was basically my third choice. I was looking for a Nerf football, like I had when I was a kid in the 70s. Something that wouldn't mar the vehicles as I teach the neighbor's grandkids how to throw, throw better and throw for accuracy on the move. I also need a Nerf style soccer ball that isn't super tiny but, also not a full sized, size 5 soccer ball either. The employee I dealt with was as helpful as he could be but, not carrying and item has me now look elsewhere for foam style sports stuff. Target? Nope Walmart uh-uh. Amazon... of course but, I am tired of having to go to Amazon for EVERYTHING. SO TIRED! SPECIFICALLY GETTING WHAT YOU NEED: I like to see different versions of an item. Hold it in my hand. Feel the weight, density... bounce it... kick it... knee it. Parents who play an active roll in their kids lives get this. They also get that denting a car panel with a sports ball is not good nor is breaking house windows. They get that you can't go to the park to play with the regulation style and size ball every day. So, it is logical to carry this item... yeah, yeah... at AMAZON. FOUR POUNDS OF STUFF IN A THREE POUND BAG: As for everything else in the store, it seems to be well stocked... manybe overstocked. Judging the size of the inside of the building from the outside is deceiving. They cram so much inside it is crazy.... this mostly applied to where the winter jackets and snow pants were. I had to transit this area and I am not sure if they had just gotten a shipment or a sale was going on and they moved everything from the back to the clothing racks or what ... but it was full... not hoarding full... just full. ATHLETIC TAPE: I will say on another visit I came to get athletic tape to wrap some devil sticks/fire sticks I am making. WOW! What an assortment. Pretty amazing. Trust me, if you need athletic tape... Skip AMAZON. Lots of local school colors, plus Dodger blue, neons, I think there even may have been some camo ones in there. So if you are a climber, gymnast or want to wrap a home chin-up bar, this is your spot. TENNIS: Oh and lastly, I did see reasonable prices on getting yourself set up with a tennis racquet and gear. Eventually I will do that here. PARKING: Decent lot... I was on a 5-mile health walk when I stopped by so I didn't have to fight for a spot. EMPLOYEES: Dealt with two but, I am pretty self-sufficient in a sporting goods store. I mostly require navigation help, which I received both times. I like to think of myself as a "get me to the aisle and I am good" type of customer. LOCATION: Right on Firestone, by the mall. EASY! Big 5 is 1 for 3 (batting .333 isn't bad if you play pro ball). Came into this store for some shoes. The store was empty. An employee told us someone would help us out momentarily. We wait for 20 minutes. When we walked out we saw 2 employees just talking. RACIAL PROFILING!! If you are of Asian descent and shops at Big 5 stores regularly, might want to avoid visiting their store on Firestone in Downey, CA. Today is 05/01/2024, I walked in soon as the store opened. Got my items and was the first in line, waited approximately 5 minutes as the store manager Luis was working on something at the cashier's area. Another customer walked in, she initially looked at me from head to toe and began a conversation with Luis. I interrupted their conversation by saying "There is a line here". I'm a strong believer of "First come first serve" and if a customer leaves the line, they should get in line like everyone else upon returning. This is common courtesy in my book. The conversation stopped soon after and the customer proceeded shopping. WELL, THIS IS THE BEST PART! I walked up to the cashier area and was informed by Luis she was here first. In addition, Luis asked me the following in an extremely rude manner "DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, ARE YOU IN A HURRY, DID YOU GET UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED"? I chose not to argue with him or he might call the authorities. After paying for my merchandise, I ask for his Supervisor's name, his business card. All Luis provided on the back of a regular Big 5 business card (because Luis doesn't have one for himself as a store Manager) was hand written Luis, (800)898-2994. The phone number is for Customer Service. Luis, if that is your real name and title, because you did not wear a name badge nor having business cards in your name. Please feel free to chime in, review your store's security cameras to support your claim that the other customer was there before me. Also suggest for you to enroll in a sensitivity training course, because asking customers rude questions is not normal. I appreciate the neatness and efficiency of this store. I have tried going to a few other branches nearby and they have inconsistent times mangers show up etc. The Downey spot has been the best. Full Disclosure: The store is AWFUL! The merchandise is poorly coordinated not consistently grouped together. There is no displays. Nothing seems to be where it should be and SADLY there's no customer service. This place needs help!! Seriously there is no way you can be in and out of here if you're looking for something specific. Tip: IF you are thinking of coming here to buy something, and looking for something specific?! Keep driving down Firestone until you hit the 605 South freeway and head over to Dicks Sporting Goods or The Big 5 in Cerritos since NO ONE will bother to help you anyway. The customer service here does not exist. Had one of the worst experiences trying to shop for something here. My Experience: I came in looking for an outdoor folding chair I saw online. Unfortunately for me, the chairs I wanted you could only buy in-store. I walk in and I'm immediately met with two girls just standing around doing NOTHING. One is standing behind the register and the other one is leaning on the counter chatting/chilling. I approach them both asking about the chair and "Desery" (she's a little awkward looking) just brushed me off! Responds " you can go look in the camping section" I was very specific with the description of the chair I was looking for and she replied " yes all the beach chairs are over there" I said nothing about a beach chair, but ok. I go over there and LOOKED! It was a mess, chairs EVERY WHERE! I go back to the counter where these two inutile good for nothing employees were and asked for help again since I saw chairs all around the store on the top of the opposite side where she had directed me. This time I showed her a picture she responded "I'll send someone right now." My goodness her and ol' girl were JUST STANDING doing everything possible not to help!! I walk away and kept looking - what do you know?......No one showed up to help. I walk all over the store - nothing! They get a second chance. My husband returned to the store same day and same thing happened to him. We head over to the Big 5 in Cerritos - Big difference, it was night and day! Thanks Big 5 Cerritos and Thank you David! The layout was similar however the store was clean, it was bright and it didn't smell like a library. We were immediately greeted by an employee his name was David. Right when we stepped foot in the store he says " What can I help you with today?" We told him what we were looking for, he responded "right over here" and walked us right over to where it was. Clearly he understands the importance of customer service and how it directly effects the sales as wells as the PROFIT of that store. This employee knows that if you're coming into the store it's because you're buying. This is a specialty store. These 2 need some re-training. They clearly don't understand their role and how their poor attitude and lack of customer service impacts the sales and profit of that store. I'm not one to be a snob when I interact with people who work in retail. I'm your favorite customer. I am someone who loves to shop. Customer Service is about offering an experience, it's engaging. Big 5 is a smaller sporting goods chain. This particular location is quite small. We come here quite often when we are looking for something that is more reasonably priced than the larger chains like Sports Chalet or Sports Authority. When you sign up for their email they send you coupons and specials that aren't normally advertised. We have been able to get some pretty good deals on weights, workout equipment, and clothing items. Since the store is on the smaller side they have really packed items in so it is quite cramped. Customer service is sometimes lacking. Some of the ladies working the register seem to really hate their job, while others (like the one I experienced the other day) are really friendly. Parking here is limited and sometimes it's difficult to get into the lot (you have to make a u-turn) especially since there is construction on Firestone Blvd. Other than it being small and parking, it's an a-ok place to go for sporting goods. read more

Chris was awesome. I was there this evening. It was a long day for me and had to rush to get one long list of items on the to-do list done! Chris was there to the rescue. They didn't allow me the use of their restroom so I had to rush over to Dunkin to use theirs [I purchased something...not because they asked me to do so but it's the right thing to do] and then headed back to complete my purchase at Big 5 where Chris had already pulled out the majority of items from the list only briefly read to him while on my way out to Dunkin. Great customer service from Chris and another young man there this evening. Not so much from the young lady. She rolled her eyes at me. I didn't need that. Yes, I was in a rush but no need to be rude or dismissive. There are a ton more items I have to purchase before Christmas. Here's hoping Chris is there to help when I come in. read more

I just reminded myself why I drive 10 miles to Dicks sporting good because the customer service at this facility is the worst I've experienced. I think corporate needs to know how shotty the employees on 3/4/22 around 4pm are. Oh Big 5.. Love and Hate... Where do I begin.. First of all, Ive been to all the Big 5's in this area, Cerritos, Lakewood, Bell Gardens, Whittier, and I must say this is by far the smallest, right next to Cerritos taking a close second. Now what I have heard, is that this one is one of there big mover stores, so a lot of merchandise comes to this store due to the flow of items. Which would be the reason this store is always full of merchandise. Which is a definite plus. So if your looking for something, this store is most likely to have it. Bad thing here there customer service. You can tell there high school kids, or just out of high school, who dont really care, and are there just to get paid. I came here a couple weeks back looking for some hiking shoes, and the customer service I got, I'd rather buy my shoes on Zappo's. (shameless plug). One rep. helped me get a pair of shoes, but when the size didnt fit, he was no where to be found. I got another rep. to help me get the right size, but he said he was doing something else, and would be back in a while.. I just left after waiting there like 10 mins. Today i had the pleasure of being descriminated against.At least thats how it felt. Maybe because I look like an angry unshaven Mexican, I dont know. I went to the store to purchase some rifle ammunition. I waited a few minutes while the guy at counter helped other customers with air rifle pellets and another with rifle ammunition. When the guy asked if I needed help I told him that I wanted to purchase ammunition. He immediately told me that they are no longer selling ammunition. I asked him what time they stopped. He paused and thought about his answer and stated that they stop selling at 5 PM. This was at 7PM when I just saw him sell some. After that I just said Thank you and walked away. This is not the first time that they make up policies for different customers. During the recent ammunition shortages in the area I went in to purchase ammunition in mid April. I attempted to purchase two boxes of 9 mm. Guy at the counter told me that I was only allowed to purchase one box so that's what I did. A few hours later I returned with a friend after letting him know that Big 5 had ammunition in stock. This time my friend was allowed to purchase multiple boxes. I guess the guy didn't recognize me from being there a few hours earlier. Even though they have inflated prices I was still willing to patronize this location because of its close proximity to my home. Unfortunately after these two instances I will have to drive a little further and visit the Bell Gardens location or my favorite Turner's Outdoorsman in Norwalk. read more

This is a very small store. They have so many things inside that it feels very crowded even with no customers inside. I didn't feel comfortable walking around the store because it felt stuffy. So I went straight to the register to ask the employee to bring me my water shoes. I was told by the bell gardens location employee that the Downey location had 5 pairs left in the size I was looking for but when I got to Downey the young lady at the register said they didn't have any. I was persistent so she called another employee and sure enough the shoes were in the back! I was told I could they are just no going to sale me any weapons I said fine just need the test. Once I was in they told me I could do it without a purchase of a weapon. Then I tried to purchase a face mask the complete face mask by Nike. One of the employees told me she had just took all of them and the girl in the front should have it. When I asked her I seen her putting them in a drawer by her cash register. But she told me she didn't have anymore and the only ones she had where the like the medical ones. I told her my cousin just bought one less then 10 minutes ago and you have them there in that drawer. She just seemed bothered and annoyed to be there since I walked in. Just a regular big 5 sporting goods. They have great products but it kind of messy usually. Came to get some supplies for my trip to NYC. Like hand warmers and beanies. The hand warmers worked wonderfully but they were just scattered all over the place. Maybe better organization and better customer service and it would be a way better experience.
