Two words "Sunday Add", Big 5 specializes in close to loss leaders in their weekend adds, sure its small, but if they have what you are looking for, they will have the best price. Guns, Shoes, and Knives are my favorite purchases here, By purchasing knives for example from the add, you can get two or three for the price of one the same brands elsewhere. read more

As the mother in an active, athletic family of one girl and three boys (four, if I count dad ; ) our local Big 5 is often my first stop for shoes, sporting goods, camping gear, and unusual, inexpensive "toys" that make fun gifts. Their prices are so reasonable, and they are great about helping you get the most for your money, whether it's extending a recent sale price or offering valuable coupons, etc. And the employees are very helpful. I was there again yesterday buying shoes for my son, and was so appreciative of the great service provided by Yolanda. She was awesome! read more

We were in the gun section for almost 45 minutes before just walking out. No one offered to help us, or welcomed us to the store. Didn't seem friendly or helpful at all. We just decided to go somewhere else, where the customer service was better. read more

I was pleasantly surprised today when I stopped by Big 5 Sporting Goods just to see if they had a pellet gun. In fact they had a large range of pellet guns perfect for young beginner shooters and campers just looking for something to protect themselves from snakes and such. The staff was really nice and helpful. In fact they also had a nice range of rifles including some vintage guns. Their ammunition stock was pretty full for today's standards and were helpful in guiding you to another competitor if they did not have the ammo in stock. Though I am not a big corporate chain store consumer or at least not more than I have to be, I am glad we have thses guys in our neighborhood. read more

We went into Big 5 today to look around. As we walked into the store, the manager, Kit, went out of his way to not make eye contact with us... I guess so he wouldn't have to greet us. We then went to the counter to look at the pellet pistols and again "Kit" walked past us and ignored us standing there. He did, however, greet the other couple that was in the store and asked them if they needed help... even though we were standing there first. I have no I idea why he felt that we were not worth his time or effort, maybe due to the fact that we are an interracial couple... who's to say? I called in to inquire about disc golf disc. The lady who answered the phone said they infect carry disc golf disc. I drive half an hour to check out their selection. Once I arrive I spoke with two different employees who have no idea what I'm talking about. I have read about their incompetent work force before I arrived and those who reported such are not exaggerating by any means. All I found in the store after waking around a bit were some frisbees, not disc golf disc. Needless to say I've wasted my time here, but luckily for me Dicks Sporting Goods is right down the street. read more

I needed a new pair of running shoes, and he kindly, patiently, and expediently helped me find a GREAT PRODUCT at a GREAT (on sale) price! As a Regional Manager, I assume he visits and performs "quality checks" on the stores in his region, thus his presence in this store. I sold shoes (on commission) when I was a lad. I like the fact that Big 5 has largely remained unchanged throughout the years. Yes I can find some things cheaper at Walmart or more selection at Sports Authority, but in general those stores don't have what I am looking for. I go to Big 5 for the specific things I need that I know that they have, as others have mentioned their ads are great. Customer service is always good I've never had any issue with finding someone to assist me, or making a purchase or return. In fact, without asking I've had them price match a high cost item, plus give me an additional discount for related accessories. Very pleased. read more

This place is small and crowded, but they always have great prices and selection on shoes. They are not very knowledgable about fitting, so you may want to research the right shoe for your foot or need before you go. The staff is so very friendly and always really helpful. read more

Will NEVER step foot in the store again! My daughter and I walked into the store at approximately 520pm.....there only seemed to be 2 other customers in the store. There was one greeter, behind the counter who also played the role as cashier. We were in search of a portable volleyball set. We found one, on the shelf but the box had a large hole in it and it was torn open. When we asked if someone could verify all the contents were inside, the cashier (employee) said we could help ourself.....really what happened to customer service? When we asked if someone else was available to help, her reply was short and sarcastic....she could call someone but he might be at lunch. I honestly felt as I was inconveniencing them by wanting to buy a $100 volleyball set. A co-worker did manage to come to the front and ask if there was anything he could do, so I thought finally there was hope. Before long that theory was shot down......when I asked if he could help verify all the contents were inside the box he said we couldn't buy it. But WE could look for another one on the shelf. At this point I felt if I had found one I would have rung it up myself and paid for it and not needed a salesman at all. The whole nightmare actually got worse than that.....when I was asked if I would like them to contact another store to see if they had one in stock and I quickly replied with a yes thinking they would retract the offer considering this was the first thing they had done to try to accommodate me, they initiated the call to Vista, but when the Vista store answered the phone and put the sales rep on hold, would you believe the sales rep in the Oceanside store put the Vista store on hold? Why would you do that.....to me it screamed idiot. The saga continued by not being able to contact the Vista store, me asking to speak with a manager, and the manager only offering an apology, and nothing else. Really 50 minutes in the store having to do all the "customer service" work myself was too much. Lesson learned, travel a few miles further west to Big 5 competitor SPORTS AUTHORITY and get treated like a customer should be treated. I won't go into Big 5 if they're giving merchandise away! Its not worth my time, or the stress and aggravation. Having 2 children in sports I know now where to shop, and its NOT BIG 5 read more

I actually got good service here on Friday 4/4/14, thin white guy with curly hair in the shoes dept. Shocking! The customer service is usually terrible (wave you towards what you're asking for, even if there's no one else in the store, no checkout person anywhere near the registers, etc), so I hope there's a new manager or at least a new attitude! read more

I'm only putting one star because you have to. Before going to the store,I went online to see if they carried the item I needed. When we arrived at the store, it was a 1/2 hour until it opened. We were one of the first ones in the door so it was not busy. We Asked the front cashier if she could direct us to the item, she told us they did not carry the item we seen online. We decided to look any ways. Asked another sales associate,he also said we don't Carry them. The manager comes on to the floor, we ask him, he also said we don't have any. I look around a little and find them on a rack. You would think a manager should know his store better. So beware Big5 employees are clueless, even the manager, he should be embarrassed. read more

Staff was helpful in getting baseball stuff for my son and prices were very affordable in comparison to Dicks on baseball pants. Paid $11 for Wilson brand and the fit was great. Also got my sons team color socks, belt and other accessories. Their cleat selection and price was average. I ended up getting cleats at Dicks and were about same price. Definitely recommend it for baseball or any sports teams. read more

Big 5 Sporting Goods is one my favorite places to go and look around. This location off Vista Way is the smallest Big 5 Sporting Goods location that I have visited. As I always do I look at the add weekly and if I find anything that I was to take a look in person then I go and visit the nearest location to me. On this particular visit there was a parking lot sale going on in front of the store. To start off there was no associate outside to help people including myself as we looked through the sale items. Next, once inside I ask about some t-shirts that was on the add and the employee just pointed across the store and said "they're over there", long story short I was not able to locate the shirts in the direction I was told. Lastly, There was not pricing on some of the item that where on sale and when I asked when the sale was ending the employee stumble around and was not able to give me an answer. I gave a three star review because I like this company but this location have to improve in there customer service and product knowledge if they expect to wow new traffic walking through their doors. read more

You would think they would have signs clearly posting what stuff is on sale. When I asked for some help, the kid working just said that it should be in that general area. Really? I came in looking for softball cleats and I really wanted high tops and there were some on sale for originally 50 dollars in my size. So when I got the store manager to help us (sorry I didn't get his name, but ur awesome) by getting me the cleats in my size. So I went to Big 5 today and I was looking forward on getting some NIKE shoes. When I got there, I think the manager greeted us very well. We then went to the women shoes area and I found the shoes I wanted, but it wasn't my size. So we waited for one of the employees to help us, finally he came over and stood there. I told him the size I wanted so he can go check. To me he didn't have the best attitude, he looked kind of grumpy when helping me. Later he came back and put the shoe back on the shelf then told me, oh we don't have the shoe. After he said that he didn't ask me, is there a other shoe you would like me to check for you, he just walked away without saying anything. Plus it was really quiet in there, no one really talked or greeted each other. I have experienced better when going shopping here, just today wasn't really their day. read more
