If you have your pet with you, avoid this store. This is NOT a pet friendly store. There are NO signs dening access to people with PETS. I was confronted at the front door and told "NO PETS ALLOWED". I will spend my money else where, rather I am shopping with or without my pet. read more

Horrible customer service; workers leave the phone off the hook constantly so they can avoid helping customers. I tried calling a different month thinking it was a one time deal but it happened multiple times. Managers are also unfriendly: when a customer is standing infront of the shoe area & looking at you for help it's common courtesy to ask: do you need help? Not let the customer chase after you to get assistance: unless you want me to go to the back room & grab the shoes myself. Won't shop here again! read more

Purchased a ping pong table here for a great deal - they were having a sale - they were so helpful, explaining the differences between the 3 models we were looking at, helped load what had to be at least a 250lb box into our truck, and refusing to be tipped. When we opened the box the next day, we discovered a damaged part (most likely damage occurred on the journey from manufacturers to the store) and that there were a few small parts missing. The manager, Steven, graciously resolved our issue that afternoon, and we were able to finish building our pung pong table!! I visit this store occasionally and usually find the items I need. Shoes seem to have become a staple there have my Size 12 shoe size about 85% of the time. My reason for this review was a recent visit because of an item I had for a year. It was purchased at this store and now required a repair so I sought their help. They simply offered to replace it at no charge. That's great customer service! read more

This location does have very good service. I've had great experiences at most every Big 5. I'd say it's one of the last remaining sports stores that still operates in the old way...that is to say, in a good way. Chances of someone having some knowledge about the product is not terrible whereas a place like sports authority...you might as well not even waste you breath to ask. As a prior Big Box retail store associate, I appreciate the professionalism you find in smaller locations. At SA, I feel I might as well be at Costco. Very friendly staff, very helpful. Yesterday, I bought some leggings in the Santa Paula location for my yoga classes that I just started and I was stoked because they had smaller sizes which they never have in any of the other stores. So I spent around $100 on six items but I needed to return them until next week because my money got tied up. So I just went to return to the big five in Thousand Oaks and I have never been treated so poorly in a store. EVER. So the bag was in my car and I smoked one cigarette over the past day in the car but when I walked into the store I had just put out a cigarette and the manager JAKE denied the freaking return because JAKE said the merchandise smells like a "cigarette," this is a lie. If you smell them they smell like new bathing suit that new bathing suit stretchy spandex smell it exactly what it smells like it does NOT smell like tobacco. obviously the manager JAKE that was working did not want to give me my hundred dollars back if you or loose the sales he had earned today. JAKE was so incredibly rude and announced the fact that he's denying my return by getting a second opinion from his manager SCOTT in front of the other customers that were in line. And THEN since he didn't want to embarrass JAKE the other manager SCOTT the manager piggybacked on the denial WITHOUT EVEN SMELLING THE MERCHANDISE. So they both denied the return and I was baffled that I was being treated so unfairly so I called corporate and spoke to a woman NAMD LEAH corporate and explained the situation . But SHE HAD no power as to whether not they did the return (so what's the point in calling. Corp?????) And after all that was said and done. I was denied the return so I left the store feeling like the enemy when IM THE PAYING CUSTOMER AND the customer is always right. And in this case I WAS ACTUALLY RIGHT. I've worked in retail for over 15 years and my laser position was a district manager. And I could've sold that merchandise at Nordstrom in the bougiest is part of town for more than they sold it to me at. So we have bad service - bad sales people - Literally bullying and making fun of me Big 5 isnt a booming business right now. So they will not outlast Dicks and other high end sport stores. They will go down just like sport chalet and those managers will not be able to find a job because they lack the skill sets required of a sales associate. Worst customer service EVER!!! Was looking for basketball shoes for at least 20-30 min. Not one person came to ask if we needed help. That's because the 3 guys are standing there talking about Facebook and sports. I thought they were paid to help employees. If I didn't need the shoes for tomorrow afternoon I would have left. When I asked the girl who the mgr is she said he's one of the guys back there talking. I said that's poor cust service. She said I should have went to them. Horrible customer service. Stood in the arms section for a very long time(30ish minutes) before being helped. Then when I informed the manager that I'm waiting for help I received a rude response. We were interested in looking at knives, sitting st the knife counter for a while, nobody greeted us. That seems to always happen whenever we go in there so we went to the front and asked for help. The girl at the cash register is very nice and helpful. Lucas one of the employees helped us look at knives today. We picked out a knife, and he didn't tell us he brought it up to the front or packaged it so we walked around the store assuming he hasn't packaged it yet. Just the customer service was not my cup of tea, let the customers know next time that there item is waiting for them at the front desk.. It's common curtesy. I hope there customer service improves because I really like the big 5 store. Employee James didn't seem to have a very nice attitude towards us when we accidentally got in line before someone else did, when the new cash register opened up.. it was weird. we were waiting there long enough in the first place we almost left without the knife cuz we thought he was taking forever.. read more

I really like shopping here. I always trust that they'll have what I'm looking for. The prices are not too bad. They hold most of the big companies like Nike. They could have a better selections like colors and stuff. But other than that they're pretty good. The staff are really nice as well and pretty helpful. Can't go wrong. read more

ok for... -- tennis balls, orthotics and cheap binoculars lousy for... -- the help - these are just kids & knowledge is poor --shoes - don't get suckered by the ads - the inventory is junk. they will almost never have the stuff advertised in the newspaper, and even if they do, the quality will be poor - usually specially made cheap stuff for big-5. and the shoe salesmen are absolute louts. recommend instead: --sport chalet or the outlet stores for shoes. much better fitting service. worth a few dollars more. By the way, avoid the snooty running stores like Fontrunners - if you are not some kind of mean & stringy triathlene, you will be looked-down upon in a very uncomfortable way. --REI for backpacking and camping gear, or better yet, A-16 (heaven - but expensive). read more

Very poor customer service from the Manager. I went to this Big 5 on behalf of a friend who is looking to buy a Shotgun. Specifically a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500. I suggested to my friend to get it at a Big 5. So today, I went to this Thousand Oaks store to check out what they have. I found they didn't have the Remington in stock, but they did however have the Mossberg 500 in stock for $399.99. So I texted my friend and he asked me to text him a picture of the gun. Well while I was framing my shot the Manager raced out of his little back office and stood in front of my iphone and told me that I'm not allowed to photograph anything. Big 5 does not allow pictures. Since when does a retail store care about a little iPhone picture? I photograph and text merchandise all the time when I'm shopping. "Hey Steve, I'm at Costco, check out this new 60 LED TV." "Hey Bill, I'm at Best Buy, check out this Canon Rebel camera on sale." Seriously, what is the big deal that I need to be chastised by the Manager for trying to take a photograph of an item they sell in an effort introduce a buyer to their product that would otherwise not have been a customer. Does not make sense. Perhaps Big 5 Corporate needs to reconsider this no picture policy. As for me and my money, I will shop elsewhere And I told my friend what happened and he isn't going to buy the gun from them either. read more
