Before this, I hadn't been to Big Al's since my high school grad night in 2011 and the main thing I remember is everything being sticky/greasy and it's still like that now! Big Al's also seems SUPER expensive. I compared prices to other bowling alleys and determined bowling is just outrageously expensive. The difference is Big Al's charges per person, per game rather than per lane, per hour like other places. If you have a bigger group, go elsewhere!! We go to Big Al's about once a month to bowl and then play in the arcade. The last two times we have found the service not that great. Tonight, we almost had to beg to get food and drinks, bunch of staff members sitting around talking to each other vs taking care of guests and at one point I went to the restroom and found a bunch of them in there texting and chatting with each other. We like slider ally lanes but select the lanes 38 or above. Lanes lower than this have a light show that swirls across the lanes which we find a distraction. I wanted to squeeze in a round of bowling with my youngest before dinner after a long day at work. I stopped by just after happy hour ended, so it wasn't too crowded. Unfortunately, I had to wait longer than I expected to be helped, and in my frustration, I snapped at the associate and other team members--without realizing they were in training and doing their best to assist guests. Daric handled the situation with professionalism and kindness, helping to defuse the tension and giving me a chance to calm down and collect myself. I truly appreciate the grace and patience the entire team showed me. Once things settled, the staff got us set up with a lane, fitted us for shoes, and even brought out a ramp and smaller ball for my child. This place ought to be called Fat Al's because this guys pockets have got to be stuffed. This was the most overpriced entertainment experience of my life. We used to go to Gameworks, and now on occasion we go to Dave & Busters. Both in my opinion are more affordable and both had far more entertainment. Now Al's does have bowling which the other two do not, but the video game selection here was terrible, the quality of game is below console and the price per game was between $2-$7 100% overpriced. We didn't eat or drink so I can't comment on that. I never at at Gameworks and the food and D&B is not tasty, so if Al is serving up a tasty plate, that would be a feather in his cap. That said, you couldn't convince t return. You need to take out a personal loan in order to spend more than an hour here. read more

Has lots of lanes. The place is very loud because of the bowling, music, and people talking (or shouting). The lanes have big tvs showing different things, which i find unnecessary. Our balls got stuck in the back, but it was easy to call for service from the computer screen. There is an arcade upstairs where you can earn tickets to exchange for prizes. Only a couple pf the machines didnt work. The food is good but expensive. Most of the employees were nice, but they didn't clean off our table or get us water when we asked them to. The place to order was at a bar, and the employee freaked out when he saw my kid with me. Well maybe don't have the ordering spot in a bar if you cant handle kids being present! This place IS supposed to be for families! How nonsensical is it that there is a law against minors even being present in a bar, but at the same time this place had an employee come over to us while we were bowling who offered us free beer samples? read more

If I were you I'd drive to any other place to bowl. I made a yelp account to leave this review. Went here for the first time last week. Worker up front told us the wrong price, gave us the wrong sized shoes, and then when our game shut off half way through told us we could "pay more to keep playing". Manager didn't show after we asked so I had to ask a different worker. When the manager finally came it had been like 30+ plus minutes and we just wanted to leave. When I brought up it was shady that her employees were lying about the prices to get people in the door she wouldn't have it. I told her I wanted a refund for the half of our time we were initially promised and the food that we never would have ordered if we were told the price in the first place and she just kept blaming "the high schooler" that had "messed up" and then passed me off to another manager. The second manager kept blaming us for not "reading the price" and instead just believing what the worker told us. After being told there was no way that either of them could even refund me if they wanted to they told me they would ask Gary. Turns out Gary was in the building but "wasn't clocked in" and would have to call him later. Got home that night and my fiancé spent half the night puking from the food. I've called Gary a few times with no reply so I guess I'm gonna have to call my bank to get my money back TL:DR Got told the wrong price to get us in the door to buy overpriced food that made us sick and then laughed at when I asked for a refund all while the big boss was too busy chilling at the bar to make things right. And they don't deal with ANY CASH. They pointed me to what they called a "reverse ATM" which gives you a plastic card to use for games, but gives you NO CHANGE. We only had a 20. I was invited to a VIP event at Big Al's. Tiffany hosted this event and it was a huge success. We enjoyed sampling some of their new additions to the menu and even enjoyed playing at the arcade. The drawing for prizes was fun too! The potato skins, corn ribs and steak bites were really yummy. The mac and cheese had a nice kick to it. These new enhancements to the menu will be nice. Literally didn't acknowledge a kid and then wouldn't even make eye contact with me when I asked him how many tickets I had, was on his phone the entire time so to make up for what he did, I ended up giving 150 tickets to the little kid that he ignored because I felt so bad. My name is Candice, I just came out of brain surgery this morning and I wanted nothing else but to go bowling with my friend Emily. Upon arriving at Big Als this afternoon, I was appalled by the front desk employee. He asked if I wanted bowling shoes, and when I replied "no", assuming he meant I could go in my normal shoes, he said, "you need bowling shoes to bowl." Later in the evening, a young lady approached my table. Emily asked where we could get water, at which she scowled and looked Emily up and down. "Don't you see the bar over there" she uttered rudely. Obviously we didn't assume we could get water at a bar, since bars are for alcohol. We laughed but she didn't laugh with us, she laughed at us, rolled her eyes, and went to flirt with the men at the other table. At this point I thought the bullying was done, but as me and Emily went upstairs to the arcade, we were met by another rude employee. I asked what I should do with my card, and he sighed and looked down at me. He refused to answer me the first time I asked, then he growled and said "I can check your tickets." I was appalled when I discovered I only had 60 tickets. At this point I was angry not only at the employees but at Big Als itself. I paid $20 for the card, and with my newly done brain surgery all I wanted was a stuffed animal. 6000 tickets for one stuffed animal. All I could get with my puny 60 tickets was a tiny, finger sized hamburger gummy. Big Al's is more like BIG RIPOFF. You're going to spend$50-$100 for a few hours there PERIOD. It is a ripoff because they know they don't need to be polite, give any sort of decent service, and they can charge what they want since the closest competition is 20 minutes away. Truly the only thing Al's has going for them is location. But I would rather drive than give them my business. We had some tots to eat, and our friends got pizzas and some chicken tenders, and toppings and sauces weren't right. You can't order from their QR code to help in efficiency, because the service is AWFUL and you can't get a signal on most phone carriers inside. Al's isn't even THAT nice inside if you're talking ambiance. It's generally clean but it's the same as the other places that offer the same thing. They're just FAR overpriced. So before I get into this I am glad Big Als is here and hope they do well. We've been here in the past and enjoyed it. Last night was not up to previous standards. The good: The Pretzel and cheese started things off well. Salty soft Pretzel with a mildly spicy cheese sauce. What's nor to like. The wings- one of our party had the red hot wings and really liked them. I did not try. The average: The Philly- this was my meal. Not enough cheese sauce throughout-and this really is not a Philly. It's a hot roast beef sandwich with peppers onions and cheese sauce. Not a bad sandwich, but consistency throughout would improve it. The onion rings were ok too. Big and crunchy, but this kind cool off so fast. The bad: The nachos. Literally no cheese anywhere. No flavor. Just a giant pile of chips for way to much money. Terrible. Will never order again without management assurance that next time will be different. Literally maybe the worst we've ever had. How hard is it to put cheese on chips? The potato skins. My wife had ordered and didn't eat. I thought she might be acting picky so I tried one. Had a disgusting burnt acidic flavor that caused me to spit out and take a dry chip from the nachos to cleanse my palate. Horrible. Service- in light of the pandemic I know they were changing things up and I understand. The ordering app needs work. Didn't want to let me pay. Reset about 5 times before it went through. The kitchen either doesn't get the notes or read them as the servers had to go back repeatedly. By ordering and paying through the app - it takes away incentive for the servers to do a good job as well as they want you to tip in advance. You can tell. No attention to the tables and no one checking to see if you needed anything. We waited for refills on drinks for 45 minutes. I know we could get up and go to the bar- but why tip anything at all if I'm going to do everything myself? I'm not upset, just disappointed that they have let their standards slip. When we first came here the food was not the best. However I believe that Big Al's has changed somewhat and has upgraded their food.. usually we order nachos definitely shareable Portions. I called one of the workers over and as this worker was helping, the manager Corey came up to them and told them they needed to get back to work in a dismissive rude tone. We have a local Big Al's that my family and friends frequent, each visit lately to our local Al's has left a less than optimal experience. Our latest visit was yesterday, we stopped by to watch the NCCA games in the bar area. We were dissatisfied with the lack of service the bar area had during our recent visits. The single bar tender was very friendly but with the influx of customers he was totally overwhelmed and had long lines waiting at the bar for service. They did not have any other service even with the extra traffic. The other employee would not help us, he said we had to wait for the bartender, not sure what their role was. My friend and I left, due to the lack of service, we did not want to wait inline for a drink. We really enjoy the TV screens and some of the food. I hope some changes are made so we can continue to enjoy stopping by. read more

Son and I went here to have some 1-1 time together and we had some fun. Upon entry to the venue we were given the opportunity to bowl in two places. The lanes to the left had regular swivel chairs while lanes toward the back were best suited for larger groups because they had bench seating. We decided to go to the back because it seemed less busy. The lanes seem to be in great order but the computer system for player entry and lane management seemed so old and outdated. The interface was not responsive and the graphics didn't look modern. Nonetheless we did get them to work and were able to bowl. We played two games and including our shoes it came out to $54 which seemed kinda pricey. They do have cheaper 2 for 2 games on Tuesdays. We had some additional fun with their games and arcades upstairs and their games run off a fun card that you buy and load credits. read more

HUGE ten pin loads of fun. The lanes were ripping last night at Al's. Geeze for a Tuesday night this place was rock in'. From the loads of lanes to the fun music videos and dependable bar food and drink, our gang had a blast. This time of year Al's is a place to be. The rain is here Portlanders and inside fun is still to be had. We played two games for $2 each and $2 for our shoes. The 16 oz beer was served by the friendliest bar tender I ever met. $4.25! Considering other sports venues are charging close to $10, Al's prices at least on Tuesday seem rolled back to pre-inflation prices. Highly recommend an evening out with friends. Not the best experience, unfortunately. What stood out to me though was how everything had a very greasy texture, from the arcade games to the table and bowling balls. I mean I've been to a few arcades and bowling alleys in my life and they've all been a little greasy but it just felt excessive here making me track down one of two hand sanitizer machines in the building on more than one occasion to scrub my hands free of the grease after playing on one of the arcade machines. What really nailed home the grease saga was that I had to wipe down the table we were assigned with a blue rag laying around on one of the service carts since it was greasy and had crumbs on it. While my boyfriend kept having to wipe his bowling ball with a paper towel because it kept slipping out of his hands and messing up his delivery :( Overall, it was a disappointing experience; and my boyfriend and I left Big Al's that evening feeling a little greasy However, the drinks were good, and the bartender was friendly! Fathers bowl for free on Fathers Day, and $5 arcade play for free as well. This was good enough reason to spend the day at Big Al's especially with the rain. We were told that there would be an hour wait for the lane (first come, first serve) so we went into the mail dining area to catch a baseball game and purchase a few appetizers. They texted us within 30 minutes and our food had just arrived. We ordered the tots. Pretzel bites and personal pan pizza. The food isn't amazing but better than your traditional bowling alley. We transferred food and drinks to lane 38, located in Slider Alley. This is a more private area with luxe seating with more space and a cozier feel with limited number of lanes. The music and psychedelic light show was entertaining. No one checked in on us - could've used another drink. Price was great for 3 bowlers since Dads were free and we all own our own bowling shoes. I let corporate aware that the Big Coin conversion negatively affects us because it's a 50% price hike for games. Instead of being helped their corporate leadership bans me instead. I have complained to Dave and Busters guest services and they have given me free game credits or gift cards. At least over $50 in free stuff just for voicing my concern. But Big Als just bans me and has not figured out how to refund my game card that has tickets / credits. Their leadership is very unethical and they have no long term goals to be like Dave and Busters. Their goal now is to charge as much as they can and hope people don't find out they been raising ticket prices for prizes or used Big Coin to disguise a 50% price increase! Then ban anyone who speaks against them. They talk about being family owned but this arcade feels more like it's run by the mafia. I have been in to Al's several times over the past few years as they are close to home. Last night I was home alone and had a chance to visit with friends for dinner. Couldn't resist the great company. We found it fairly empty which meant no wait. Always nice. That said we were seated right away. Our server was Catherine and found her full of personality and energy. Between the three of us we had one beer, two Crazy Al's (one with two eggs, both with peanut butter), tots with one and house-made chips with the other. Our third person opted for the Greek Bowl salad (I think). I was offered a choice as to how I wanted my hamburger cooked and I asked for some pink. Unfortunately there was none and it was consequently overcooked and a tad dry (for me). The chips I had were plentiful and good. My friend seemed to enjoy his burger and tots. The salad was reported as "delicious". Some was taken home - always a good sign. We also had two pieces of mud pie and that was a mistake. The slices were not particularly large as genuine mud pie should be. The ice cream was good but instead of putting the whipped cream on top it was placed alongside. The real deficit was the thin chocolate crust. Traditional mud pie has a graham cracker crust. At best, it was marginal, but I can't recommend it. My peeps agreed. As I said, this wasn't my first time in. Service has always been friendly and helpful if occasionally inaccurate so no complaints there. However I have noticed some inconsistencies in the food - I'm looking at you Bacon Chicken Mac & Cheese. Let the record show I don't bowl and although the screens are enormous I can't recommend Al's a good venue for watching sports UNLESS you can get a floor seat. I also don't drink so can't speak to that aspect. Since I can't speak to anything other than food and service I'm going to score Al's three stars.
