Before arriving, I just assumed the "bats" in the name was referring to the animal not a baseball bat. ;) Overall, we had a grand ol time at Big Bats Cafe. Although this was our first visit, the staff and other customers made us feel like we were at our own local bar. I really appreciated that the bartender checked in on us a few times to ensure our food was fine and to see if we needed more refills. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibe is really laid back, which was perfect after spending a few hours at the beach.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The menu is more like comfort-style food with plenty of burger and sandwiches options. For our meals, we went with a crab cake sandwich and a fish sandwich, both of which included a side. I thought the food was pretty good, and I have no major or minor complaints. Also, I thought the crab cake had a decent amount of lump crab (for the price). It was interesting (in a good way) that the sweet potato fries had a bit of cinnamon and sugar. While the fries were a bit sweet for me, I did not find them to be overly sugary. Also, Big Bats Cafe has plenty of speciality cocktails include an assortment of Crushes. Our price tag (without tip) was about $70 for two sandwich combo meals, three beers, and two cocktails. Had to change my review based on recent experiences, today's being the last chance. Twice, they didn't get my to-go order right. The food we received was OK. The worst part is the waiting. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Today, I walked in and there were four people within my view -- 2 at the bar, 1 at the front greeter stand, and another next to them.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Three of the four people saw me, one of the people (bar tender) had their back to me, and didn't budge to keep an eye on the bar. I sat for a couple of minutes, when I realized no one's coming. Especially when the woman behind the bar saw me, grabbed her drink, didn't come over or let the bar tender know I was there. What a lovely find right after you cross the Bay Bridge heading East. Fish was light and very crispy. Not oily at all. Fries were crisp and I enjoyed the Caesar salad. Booths were very comfortable. Enjoyed the baseball theme. I definitely recommend you stop here and try this place out. read more

The waitress made sure our beverages were refilled and returned to the table several times for quality checks. We had the fried pickles for appetizer and were they fried! A bit overdone. The Southwest ranch dipping sauce was quite interesting. I'm really not sure if I liked it or not but I did eat it. My entree was a special of the day. 1/2 rack of baby back ribs with fries and coleslaw. The ribs were delicious. The meat just fell off the bone and had a great amount of bbq sauce, even though I requested extra and used the extra. Just the type of person I am. The coleslaw was a large portion and it was good, but way more than I could eat. The fries were ok. Dessert was the sopapapilla (believe that was the name of it). This was very good. A cinnamon covered fried crepe with honey, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. The sweetness was just right. Portions were perfect with the exception of the pickles. The price was high for the size and of course they were overcooked which made it worse. I would definitely recommend and return! read more

Been visiting Big Bats for 20 years now. When you want quality food and a good place to drink, there isn't a better place on the Island. I can't think of a bad meal that I have ever had here. The wings are among the best anywhere. Period. They are large wings, not the tiny ones you get most places. The seasonings are excellent and if you like blue cheese, it is the real deal. My only complaint is the price of the wings, but if you like quality over quantity, you will be fine. My favorite is probably the gyro platter. Perfect every time. Bloody Mary's are excellent. The beer is cold and there are many TVs to watch your favorite sport. The outdoor patio is large and there is a restaurant if you don't want to be in the bar. We just had the worst food we have ever been served at a restaurant. The cheeseburger tasted like cardboard cooked in stale grease. The onion rings were too brown, almost black. We requested that one of the ceasars salads be served with no croutons (due to health issues) but it came with more croutons than lettuce. The wings were very dry and tasteless. The owner is very involved...going around to the patrons and saying 'hi, how you doing?' and checking in to see how things are. Big Bats has really fell off..... ordered crab dip..... waited a while to receive appetizers. We were the only ones on the restaurant side it was 3:40... so not crowded at all. As we go to dig into the crab dip I said to my husband I really don't think there is crab meat in this, he takes a few bites. The server comes back I told her the crab dip seemed to be all cream cheese, I showed her it... She said so sorry I will be right back to fix that and walked away before we could talk..... brought out a cup of crab meat that she said "you guys can add and mix this in the crab dip" .... we were shocked.... and after already complaining once and waiting a while for the appetizers , I decided to just add the crab meat that was placed on our table ..... which made it worse... the cup of crab meat she brought out wasn't even warmed... it was FREEZING. They must of literally just pulled it from the freezer. Very disappointed in how big bats has ended up. It use to be our go to spot. We will not be returning. Lost a local! read more

As a die-hard Orioles fan, I love the baseball-theme, and the fact that the bar is packed with orange-and-black during ballgames, even weeknights. The stools at the bar are made from Louisville Sluggers, and they have some good beers on tap, and prices are pretty reasonable. I would give the bar three stars, although they only had two bartenders on staff for a packed house, and it took over 10 minutes just to get a draft beer. The wings are pretty good, I've had the Chesapeake Rub and the buffalo-style, and they were piping hot and tasty, but a little too dry. I tried to order a special, only to find out later they were sold out. I ordered off the menu, then found out about 10 minutes later they were out of that too. I eventually said, "What do you have?" I ended up with a buffalo chicken sandwich. Review? The same thing said about the wings could be said about the sandwich. I was really disappointed by the food, because I think that the idea of a local baseball bar is cool, and the memorabilia is fun. read more

I've been going to Big Bats off and on for a few years now, and have yet to be disappointed. We went with a large group after a busy day, yet were seated immediately. The staff was quite attentive, but not intrusive, seeming to know exactly when we needed a refill on our drinks, or when we were ready for our next course. They have a peanut butter whiskey that is quite tasty!!! For appetizers, we had the potato mound, which is just loaded French fries. The crinkle cut fries make it perfect! Tonight's dinner was the burger mound, a hamburger served on a pile of mashed potatoes and gravy with a veggie side. Simple, tasty, comfort food. The fish and chips is quite good, as are most of the other offerings. Finally, for dessert, you can't go we with the apple cobbler. The base seats on the barstools is cute in keeping with the theme, but they aren't really conducive for sitting for a long period of time. The benches in the bar area are also quite uncomfortable. Located directly over the bay bridge, it's a nice stop on your way to the beach. Sits in the back from a gas station, easy to get to but maybe not the most noticeable. Big Bats has been on a slow decline for years, they now have it where if you order a burger, you get: Plate, Bun, Burger. Thats it, no toppings, unless asked, no fries. I ate here a few weeks ago with a friend. We seated ourselves, even though there was a sign that said "Please wait to be seated". I have a feeling we would have been waiting awhile. The dining area is separate from the bar, but there is an open window between areas, which means it can get pretty loud in the dining area. The waitress was prompt, friendly and efficient. We ordered the nachos for an app and they were very good. I ordered the cheese steak, which I couldn't eat because I had too many nachos. I took a few bites and it seemed ok.
