Can't say enough good things about this place! My 5yo daughter has been begging to go fishing, and not being a fisherman myself I was a bit intimidated walking into a bait and tackle shop. The staff were so kind and helpful- they had a great selection of kids poles and set us up with everything we needed. They even put the bobber, weight, and jig on for us and recommended a kid-friendly fishing spot. We haven't caught any fish yet, but the Frozen-themed fishing pole worked surprisingly well and my daughter had a blast learning how to cast. read more

Amazing customer service, me and my bf know nothing about fishing but wanted to give it a go, but after spending a frustrating night of cutting and detangling our lines on our rods we came in the next morning and got more than what we expected. Best service everyone in my family has ever received, ever. Luckily, the other sporting goods store was closed and so we came here instead. Josh, the awesome guy at the counter, was extremely patient. None of us had ever fished with fishing rods before, and he took us step by step through fishing. He gave us a full hour or so tutorial on what bait we needed for different fish, how to rig the rod with weights, leader line, swivels, and hooks. He taught us how to assemble everything, including how to tie the knots. He took us out to the side with lots of room to let us practice casting. I really want to come back here. He taught us how to fish, and you know what they say... "Buy a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he eats for life." Or its something like that anyway. Point is, I was able to catch a foot-long rainbow trout in mid-November. I was sooo ecstatic, because this was my first time fishing, and no one else can describe the feeling of catching your first fish unless if you've made a catch before. The worker was helpful and knew the lake enough to help us figure out what we needed and where to go. But he seemed very irritated and annoyed by our presence. It might've been because we are Asian and spoke with slight accents. His response to every question was very rude and spoke us down as if we were stupid. Walked in and was immediately greeted with a smile by a man who knew EVERYTHING!!! (I don't remember his name...I wasn't the one talking to him) My friend had a ton of questions about a specific knife and the man in the store knew EXACTLY what my friend was looking for! They talked about the fishing out there, gave us recommendations for breakfast and lunch. Showed me what type of bear repellent I could carry around to scare off coyotes (when I walk my dog) etc. this was a wealth of information!!! We took his advice for breakfast and OMG...so deco lions, hole in the wall place! Told him if we come back in the spring we will be back to rent a kayak for me to layout in (and work on my tan) and my friend to fish! Go visit this store if you go to Big Bear :). read more

Came here twice during our three day stay at BBL. First time we came in looking for ping pong balls (yay for BP!) we found them, and upon checkout, we noticed a selection of knives; folding, hunting, etc. We didn't stay to buy one but Stephen, the manager, rang us up, and was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met. On our last day, we were sitting around our cabin, trying to think of something to do. All of a sudden, I reached enlightenment, and yelled "LETS GO KNIFE SHOPPING!" So we mobbed up in two cars, and 7 of us went to pick out knives. The ship was relatively busy and it didn't seem like there was anyone else working except for Stephen again. He was able to help all of us while also making sure the other customers got his attention if they needed anything. He never made us feel rushed and he took a lot of time explaining each knife we were interested in. Super professional but personable at the same time. We all walked out with awesome souvenirs, and we all agreed that this was some of the best customer service we have ever received. Wish we could take him back to LA with us. A beautiful 5 day holiday at Big Bear. Jeffery (the brocolli lover) brought his fishing pole, but Shelly and I know next to nothing about fishing. We stopped in to this great place, hoping for some male intervention. Steve was just the best guy! He basically took Jeff under his wing and showed him how to set everything up. He was just so wonderful! Didn't catch any fish this time, but still really enjoyed the experience.
