Pretty disappointed with our board and equipment rental experience at Scotty's Ride Shop, and like most experiences, it was the people that made all the difference. AI said Scotty's was known for its friendly and helpful staff, and specifically a good place for families newer to boarding and renting outside of the local resorts. It's not our *first* rodeo, but it was the first time we ventured away from renting onsite at the resort. To be honest, I was a little intimidated at the thought of renting at a "board shop", imagining being surrounded by intermediate and expert-level boarders both at and behind the counter, impatient with this mom and her relative-noob 10-year-old son. Well, it could have been worse I guess, but my fear was confirmed. We walked in around 8ish Friday night to rent for the next day. Zero other customers in the store. The lead clerk was engrossed watching something on his phone and looked up with a scowl. The tone of his "How can we help you?" was agitated, as though we knocked on his apartment front door at 11 PM asking for a cup of sugar. Once I said we were there for a board rental for the next day, he groaned and without eye contact, he droned rote orders to start the rental process. His tone down-shifted from agitated to condescending, as though I was a petulant child who had already disobeyed his commands the first round. Now I was pissed so the smile left my face and I dropped my cheerful tone. I was grateful when his colleague took over the next step; he smiled at us and chatted us up but unfortunately, it was back to muppet-hair (yes--this was his defining physical feature) for the rest of the process. By this time, another couple walked in and he might have realized he was being a jerk to me because he bucked up back into a passable professional tone and demeanor to greet them. Maybe it's because my son is a tween, but the remainder of this dude's spiel was back to a condescending and rude tone--again like we were 5 and stupid. He even made a point to shame us for choosing Snow Valley, explaining it was really because he would NOT be coming "all the way" to SV if there was an issue with the board my son could not fix over the phone or FaceTime. Not the family- and beginner-friendly vibes I was promised by reviews. To be fair, the clerk who answered the phone when I first called Scotty's a few weeks back (definitely a different guy--different voice) *was* super friendly and gracious! Where was that guy that night? My son had noticed the grouchy and condescending tone as well, commenting on it once we were safely back in my car. And when it came time to return the rental, he said, "I hope it's not that same guy." I assured him it most likely wasn't because now it was two days later and a different time of day. Wishful thinking; it was the same clerk! He was about as friendly as that previous Friday night but at least this time we were prepared for it. The board itself--just the basic package--was pretty nice and newer, that part lived up to expectations as advertised. It was so nice that my son's Snow Valley snowboard instructor commented on how sick it was which made my son beam and me feel like I did right by him. But all the local board shops offer this for around the same exact price, so the difference is customer service as far as I can tell. I have a feeling this guy was the exception to the rule at Scotty's--just bad luck we got him, I guess. But enough where I'm not gonna roll the dice on this shop again anytime soon. read more

This is THE spot. Scotty's been taking care of me and my friends for the last 5 years. He just moved into this bigger shop and it's even closer to Summit and Bear. He has different levels of boards and skis so you can upgrade to some cool stuff. They have a bunch of gear to buy as well. I bought my first snowboard from here and he hooked it up with a great deal. Got to know some of the other employees over time and always a warm welcome at this place. The prices are great, cheaper than some of the other spots I've seen. This new location is way more convenient, it's next door to a 7-Eleven and a Mc Donald's. read more

I must say the prices were great but the staff had the worst customer service I had ever experienced. My friends and I felt very uneasy and disgusted by the two Hispanic girls attitude. The shorter, darker complexion girl was bad mouthing another customer who was standing right next to us. Very loud, rude, and disrespectful comments the entire time. Made us feel awkward standing there.. at one point she said "I hate people" and looked at us and said "no offense". She also told my friend to don't bother reading the fine print on the agreement and that it basically said we are responsible for everything. I love this place! The staff was super nice and welcoming. I forgot my ID and didn't have a credit or debit card, but they still gave us a chance and handled everything with a smile. If you're trying to get rentals. It's all right. If you're trying to shop for stuff, it's the worst place to get anything. They barely have anything. As far as customer service goes, it's probably the worst . There was this older man who was working there, and I could not stand how he was talking to his employees. He had the most condescending attitude and also the way he was talking to customers I get it. He's trying to be a sales person, but he was the worst upsell person in my experience. I mainly just feel bad for the employees that work beside him. I get it. He is familiar with everything and he prefers to work in a fast paced environment, but when you're dealing with customers that it's probably trying snowboarding for the first time or even working alongside colleagues, definitely not a people person and should not be in sales. Been meaning to leave a review for this place. Went here last season and they were very helpful to our group. They help my friends get fitted and rent our boots and a board/bought whatever else they forgot to bring. I got my board re waxed and edged. The people that work there are very knowledgeable and helpful. Answered all our questions and concerns. We had a few veterans in our group and I believe the shop owner gave us some limited edition stickers. Great guy! The parking is to the left of the shop. Plenty of spaces. If you need a place to rent gear this would be it. It's on the way and has competitive prices. I'll be heading here next time I head up to big bear. read more

I rent out gear here normally so I know what I'm grabbing, but newcomers who are trying to figure it out normally end up taking a little longer. I really wanted to give this shop 5 stars but I can't. The prices are great. The owner made me so worried about anything happening to the equipment, that I didn't feel comfortable. He was bad mouthing previous renters, saying how much he charged them for "lying" about how they used the equipment. He said the bindings he was renting out broke easily if you stepped on them. And if you broke them it's your fault. I did have an issue with a part of the equipment but was so worried about fixing it myself. It was a setup error. I had to take everything off, get back down to the locker, call him 2x because he didn't answer, then get told to take it to the shop there. All in all... cost me an hour of slope time. That's a lot of time. I won't go there again. :( read more

Scotty has the best place on the mountain period. His rentals are great but I truly recommend if you are ready to buy a board this is where you go. He really focuses on brands that are not burton and 1) has unique options because of it 2) prices are right. After buying my first board from him My back plate broke in a wonky way and he contacted the company for me at the end of the season last year and managed to get me replacement plates for free. He kept them all summer and replaced them for me at the top of this season. Honestly this guy goes above and beyond and will be an expert in setting you up with something that's perfect for where you are at with your riding. My wife skis and we were able to walk out of the shop fully outfitted for a reasonable price. Huge fan over here, thank you Scotty! read more

1000% recommend! Best shop on the mountain! I got a brand new Gilson snowboard (165 Wide) for Christmas and took it into Scotty's to get it waxed. He told me it was way too big for me and I'd struggle on it. He recommended I get a smaller board. Scotty made some calls and ended up swapping out my new board with another brand new one my size, same color, no charge. My man saved the day and I'm stoked with the new setup. Seems like skis run out more quickly though, so be aware. We passed by Scottie's on the way to Big Bear Ski Resort. The price Immediately stood out for me as super affordable, so I decided to stop by and check out their boards and prices. Staff was quick to welcome my group in and offer assistance. Boards were nice and waivers were a breeze to fill out. Everything was priced well for rent and we were in and out in about 30 minutes for 4 rentals. I was impressed with their service and their knowledge. They were really cool and had some tips and tricks for the beginners in our group. Gear held up great with the shredding we did and the return time of 9pm for day boarding was well witching reason! ***GO HERE AND NO WHERE ELSE**! After a trial and error with about three other board shops, i've finally found my Big Bear go-to!! I'm fairly new at boarding, and have been going to multiple shops and have felt either rushed or intimidated. Scotty's board shop is relaxed, comfortable, and makes you feel right at home. AND on top of that, you get really cool boards. Best vibes before going boarding for sure :) RENTALS: I rented the actual COOLEST board i've ever seen here. it had a design of a deck of cards and the joker on it. I was/am in love with that board! I got SO many compliments on the mountain. It rode so well too! 10/10 I would purchase if I could! The boots fit super well! for $5 more, you can purchase the knob boots which is an absolute steal! Had no problem with the equipment whatsoever! CUSTOMER SERVICE: 1000/10! As i stated earlier, the environment is very laxed! The woman who worked there was super personable and explained to me multiple times that if anything happened and i needed new equipment that I could call their number (which she said is located on the board) and they would drive a new one to me! How amazing is that?! Later that night, I met Scotty when i returned the board. he is the man! I face planted and had a couple of scars and he gave me some advice on some products to pick up from the store and reminded me to take advil/ibuprofen. super positive vibes!!
