My husband and I took the half day tour yesterday with Captain Tommy. Due to the Coronavirus scare, they took extra precautions to ensure everything was thoroughly cleaned before and after we went aboard. Seas were a bit rough, but it was a beautiful day and we reached Buck Island without any problems. The catamaran was not full, so we had one on one attention and were able to ask lots of questions about the island. We all were asked to practice snorkeling on the sandy side of the island before we made our way to the reef. The water was gorgeous! And the marine life was incredible! We saw numerous varieties of fish including blue fish, spotted fish, parrotfish, and even barracuda! After snorkeling, we were treated to Mutiny Punch - a delicious adult beverage. We took the sunset cruise on the Big Beard catamaran last night, and it was the highlight of our trip to St. Croix. Captain Greg and crew mate Rico gave us an amazing experience by heading out to deeper water in hopes of seeing whales. We didn't find any humpbacks, but we were accompanied by a playful pod of dolphins. The gorgeous sunset, the vodka punch, the music, and the camaraderie made this excursion truly special. And unlike all our other adventures, it required zero physical exertion! Hooray! read more

This was a top notch experience led by Captain Gabriel. He was accompanied by Cornelius, (pictured on the side of the boat), Leah, Sydney, and photographer, Mandy. This was a lively crew who went out of their way to be welcoming and made sure we were having the best experience. They equipped us with snorkel gear, life jackets, and instructions. I was extremely impressed with Mandy. She was extremely up front with her photo service and wanted to be sure she wasn't making a hard sell. Her photos were fantastic. I have some trouble walking and the crew went out of their way to help me. When it came to snorkeling, Leah led me around the reef with a life ring while I held on. (Beautiful reef by the way...). She pointed out Barracuda and other fish. The crew then grilled us lunch under a tent on the beach. It was awesome. We chatted with new friends and enjoyed the punch. The staff was amazing with both novice and experienced swimmers/ snorkelers. One of the most beautiful places on the island.

First off the crew was fantastic. The three guys on the Renegade went above and beyond to make everyone as comfortable as possible. The trip I went on I was one of maybe five people that were not part of a larger group. The large group was having a great time and made the boat a real party atmosphere. Unfortunately that wasn't the type of trip I was hoping for, I wanted to go enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature at one of the prettiest national parks in the country. The time you actually get on the reef is very limited. During the six hours of the tour, you only get an hour on the reef. It seemed like it was time to go just as we were getting started. Overall the trip was good. I had a good time with the other customers despite it not being what I had in mind when I booked the trip. If you want to just get out on the water and experience a variety of things this would be a good trip for you, but if you want to spend some serious time admiring the underwater beauty around Buck Island you might want to consider a different trip. read more

These guys are fantastic -- fun, attentive, helpful, knowledgeable and totally focused on you having a wonderful time. The day we went out, the weather prevented us from doing the full tour of Buck Island reef, so we just went snorkeling off the beach. My husband and I did the full-day tour of Buck Island. Gabe, Rico, Cassie, and Gabriel do a phenomenal job to make the experience everything it should be. They begin the tour with a snorkel lesson for those who have never snorkeled or need a refresher. This was so helpful as my husband did not have any snorkel experience and he was having trouble breathing with the mask. Rico fitted him with a full-face snorkel mask, which allowed him to relax and enjoy the snorkeling. Even with choppy waters around the reef, my husband felt 100% comfortable after the snorkel lesson and adjustments. The BBQ and rum punch made for a perfect and relaxing end to the afternoon. We really enjoyed our day with Big Beard's. It started off running to the shuttle. We were worried we wouldn't make the time slot we picked. We finally got to the shuttle at the end of the cruise ship dock and had to wait for others on the ship to get off. It's about a 30 min drive from the cruise ship to where Big Beard's is. When we got to Big Beard's we had missed our time slot. I was so worried we wouldn't be able to go on any other boats because when I called previously they were booked. I spoke with the ladies in the store and they were so nice. They were definitely busy but somehow got us on the full day boat. The full day was so much fun. We went to several places around St Croix. We stopped at a beach that had the bluest water and the whitest sand. We went snorkeling and others could go hiking. We also went to another little beach where the captain and his mates bbq some burgers, hot dogs, and fish. He had a hotdog/hamburger apron that was pretty funny. The crew was so nice and attentive to everyone. Truly one of our favorite days on our honeymoon! read more

What a fun, well planned day! We had a group of 16 adults on our trip and Big Beard's was very accommodating of our large group. We did the full day Buck Island snorkel and our whole group enjoyed it, even those who chose not to snorkel. The water is a little choppier than some of the other places I have snorkeled but well worth it. The lunch was great, especially the mahi mahi! We did the half day Buck Island tour, which was the perfect amount of time. Friendly crew and easy process. Don't worry where you sit on the boat, every seat is a great view. If you have common shoes/flip-flops, make sure you mark them someway before they go in the bag :-) The beach at Buck Island definitely deserves its ranking as one of the best in the world! Pretty strong waves the day we went snorkeling made for a tiring and rough swim, but still a great view of different corals and schools of fish. Staff was all really friendly and engaging. Great day excursion! My friend and I went together on Jan 30th and the crew was amazing, informative and friendly. We snorkeled the coral off Buck Island and saw tons of beautiful fish, an octopus and of course the coral. The guides were helpful, patient and courteous. Oh, and lunch was great!! Including the hermit crabs and mongoose that joined us! Definitely recommend to anyone visiting the island. read more

The full day trip to Buck Island was fantastic! All crew members (Caitlin, Chris, Andy and CJ) were wonderful. This is the best snorkeling I've ever experienced - so many types of fish and the coral reef was super cool. The water and sand beach on Buck Island is way better than any other beach I've been to, and no crowds to speak of! The picnic lunch was just so-so, but the rum punch was delish and free-flowing for the rest of the afternoon! Any time I return to St Croix, I'll be heading out with Big Beard's crew! read more

Incredible experience!! The crew was awesome and very attentive (Capt. Gabriel, Mandy (photographer), Jackie and Brian). We did the full day excursion (so glad we did!!) Buck Island, Turtle Beach, beach lunch and, vodka punch! - Mandy the photographer has a true gift! The pictures she took were amazing, they will be printed and framed! In my opinion, they were not expensive and well worth the $65! - The snorkeling - Turtle Beach and The Reef (both protected areas/monuments) were stunning. Saw turtles, all kinds of fish and the underwater reef tour - nothing like it!! - The beach lunch - there's an opening through the trees, with bar height tables and some wooden benches. The crew charcoal grilled burgers (veggie too), hot dogs, and mahi mahi for us to enjoy. They had chips and vodka punch (all food and drink was unlimited and they had plenty). There are island creatures that sure do know when the tourists arrive for lunch because so do they! They were not intrusive creatures (a few mongoose, A LOT of hermit crabs, and some doves). Not gonna lie, I fed them many leftover hot dog buns . Yep, I'm that kind of animal lover! On the ride back, it was perfect for sailing so the motor was shut off and we sailed all the way back! Highly recommend by this yelper! This was definitely the highlight of our trip. We did the full day sail and are so glad we did! Mike and Adam were fantastic tour guides, entertaining everyone and putting any fears at ease (be sure to bring cash to tip these guys!). First we sailed to pristine Turtle beach - rated one of the top ten beaches in the world. Then we went snorkeling through the underwater trail after a brief lesson. This is when the tour went from beautiful to amazing and magical. We saw many colorful fish, including parrotfish and a huge school of blue tangs. I've been snorkeling before but I have never seen a reef this beautiful and full of fish. Despite being diligent about sunscreen we got pretty burned and next time we snorkel we will definitely be buying some sort of wet suit/rash guard for extra protection from the sun. Buck island is a truly wonderful place, kept in its splendor by the national parks dept. Afterwards we went to their private beach where the rum punch flowed and all you can eat bbq was cooked. As we are vegetarians, we called ahead to inform them and they had veggie burgers there for us. A great time was had by all! read more

Fabulous morning on Buck Island. Crew was knowledgeable and chatted with all the passengers. Lots of pelicans around the corner from the first beach. We were glad to have a guided snorkeling tour on the reef side before exploring it on our own. Many diverse fish and coral plus a nurse shark sleeping on the sandy bottom. I can not say enough about our trip with Big Beard's. Buck Island was amazing. So beautiful and a National Park to boot! We saw lots of fish and the coral was really neat. The crew (Gabe, Leah and Guillermo) were incredible. Very knowledgeable and so helpful. They were all great with our kids and with some of the other passengers that were not as familiar with snorkeling. The BBQ was just right after all the energy spent snorkeling the underwater trail around the island. Lots of really cool hermit crabs on the island that kept the kids entertained. Great family adventure. We chose Big Beard's for a sunset cruise because we simply wanted to rent a spot and hit the sails not rent the entire boat via a private charter. As a big shop, they really have their act together and make sure everyone is having fun, even the kids. It was fun to see how Gabe taxied in the harbor one footed. We then raised the sails and adjusted course based on "where the wind takes you." They invited us to sit up on top in front for a more interesting sail. Tito played the role of Rum Punch runner and cruise entertainment. He handed my daughter some bubbles to play with. A real treat for her as we watched then twirl around and around. Lastly, it was a really cool treat seeing how they sound the horn returning to harbor. read more
