In May I went in for an exam and new contacts - could not be more pleased. The doc fitted me for multi focal contacts to try for a week. Went back to finalize the prescription a week later. This is the first time in years I haven't needed readers on top of contacts. Insurance covered the exam, and a year's worth of contacts with the new customer discount plus some other rebate cost me $199. For a year's worth! Super pleased - lenses are great, comfortable, I can see up close, far away, in between, so clearly the right prescription. Very satisfied. read more

I have been a client at Spex and now MyEyeDr for over 10 years--my entire adult life. This has come in handy as I have developed some neurological issues over time. Dr. Dahl has been a fantastic optometrist. She is incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, and patient. I always come away having learned more about my health. I appreciate the large selection of designer eyewear and I have purchased Lindberg, Tom Ford, Ray Ban, Oliver Peoples, and other designer frames over the years. I do agree with other reviewers that there is a pathological salesmanship attitude that permeates the enterprise. You have to be careful about what is being offered and be knowledgeable about what you want and what your insurance covers and does not cover. Terrible! Kept me waiting 35 minutes to see dr. I left after that. When I rescheduled I got there a few mins early. Ten mins later they took someone else. They had booked me and another person at the same time. I left again. When I did see a dr they did not have a correct sample contact lens so gave me one that was not my Rx to try?? I cannot see well out of my old glasses but I was told they were correct. Even though I paid for the exam I still am going to another eye dr for vision correction. I have never been so angry after an appointment in my life and I'm not an easy person to piss off. I absolutely cannot stand incompetent staff. After the exam, I sat down with a woman who did not know how to calculate the difference of two types of contact lenses with my insurance. Like a sloth, I watched her slowly click from screen to screen confused for 15 minutes. She finally asked the man for help next to her after I tried to help. Within minutes, he located the costs for her. She proceeds to tell me that with the exam costs and 6 month bi-weekly contact lenses that I owed $500! I know this amount is wildly incorrect because with the same lenses and exam in BEVERLY HILLS, I've only had to pay about 1/10th of that amount. After attempting to rip me off, I had to show her my coverage and repeatedly give her a breakdown of how much is supposed to be deducted from my lens and exam. After doing simple math about 7 times for her and 2 times for her coworker to understand, I walked away still paying 3x the amount I'm accustomed to. NEVER EVER AGAIN. Summary: If you want to go to an office that overcharges with hidden fees, has staff that can't do simple addition and subtraction, then you're in for a lovely day. read more

First let me say that the selection of eye wear is awesome! They had beautiful glasses in every price range from $100 on up. My daughter had her eye exam a couple of weeks ago. I spoke with Alicia over the phone who took care of setting up my daughters appointment. She was friendly and very helpful. There ended up being a glitch with my insurance that didn't cover the costs so she gave me a great price. Then my daughter needed glasses, my insurance wanted me to go to a different eye doctor but because Alicia and Michelle were so friendly and the doctor was excellent I called Alicia to see how much I'd have to pay out of pocket because I didn't want to switch doctors she made sure she pointed my daughter towards the glasses that were on clearance. I couldn't have been happier. Highly recommended, I plan on bringing my son here when he has to have his exam for school. Thanks ladies!! read more

I wanted to get my lenses updated to my current prescription so I went through the store attached to my doctor. It was going to be over $900 for 3 pairs of progressive lenses with insurance. They had a good deal on new frames through my insurance but their frames are boring which is why I always end up getting glasses at Spex. I thought that was too much and decided to see how much Spex would charge. They had some awesome deals! I got my 3 pairs updated and a whole new pair too for less than my other place was going to charge for just the lenses. I am so pleased! The guy did say they just very recently changed their pricing. Their frames are very interesting and unique too. Edited to add: just picked up my glasses and I am removing a star from my review because they took away my nice original glasses cases that had cleaning cloths that came with the glasses and gave me some ugly generic cases. When I called, they said they always do that. But why then did one pair still have the original case? They said I could come back in and pick out other cases, but that is very inconvenient for me and I really just want my old cases back. read more

The guy who checked me in quoted a price that was almost twice what I was quoted at a different optometrist. When I asked about the price, he mentioned a couple of additional test that I didn't ask for. When I told him I didn't need that done, then the price changed. Why not be upfront about the charges and allow me to decide if I want them or not instead of adding them automatically. I selected frames before I went in for the exam and when I came out, the young lady that was helping me had three other "suggestions" that were all a lot more expensive than the frames I originally wanted. It felt like she kept steering me toward more expensive ones. The exam itself was okay, but overall I felt like they were constantly trying to pad the sale, which made them seem a little dishonest and untrustworthy. I chose this store out of convenience and had purchased glasses there previously -- none of which lasted more than a couple of years... so shame on me for ignoring my suspicion that Spex is probably more about fashion than quality. More on that to follow. Beware -- the woman that is the manager at this location (Laura Bloom) was very dishonest with me. This is the core of my experience and is what is fueling this update. "Rude" and "mean" are all subjective descriptions and all relative ultimately... however facts are objective so this review will focus on facts. I spent over $600 with Spex on a pair of "titanium Lindberg" prescription glasses that soon developed problems with the lenses chipping...Spex replaced them replaced under warranty...but then the same "chipping" issue affected the replacment lenses...but I just put up with it because I didn't really want to deal with warranty hassles again. But soon after, the $600 titanium Lindberg frames broke while I was cleaning the lenses, This really surprised me because Spex presented them as very tough -- sales person literally sat on them in the shop to demonstrate their "toughness". I reminded Spex of this and they were eventually able to get these frames replaced under warranty. During the process, I pointed out the recurring chipping problem of the lenses to Laura Bloom, who said she would get them redone too. This all sounded great to me -- but I wanted to know that the chipping problem could be solved too..since this would be the third time replacing the lenses in these frames. Laura recommended "high-index" lenses (instead of standard polycarbonate) would be a better fit for these frames and resist the chipping. Why this was not recommended before I have no clue... but I was happy to hear about a solution and gladly volunteered to pay the cost difference to get the better lens material... she said she would check into it and get back to me. What had to be checked -- I don't know... why not just get it done -- especially if I am paying the difference? Next day, Laura Bloom called and left a message on my voice-mail claiming the high-index lenses were not possible because their lab had already made my lenses from polycarbonate. This seemed strange since the order was just submitted the day prior. Doing a bit of homework, I learned that Spex outsources their lens work to a 3rd party "lab" in Aurora, IL called "Focus Optical Labs". So I called Focus and inquired about a customer order under my name. The receptionist ("Rose") must have thought I worked for Spex - though I did not tell her I was a Spex employee. Sure enough, she looked up my order and told me in fact that my order had not been made and that Laura Bloom (Spex manager) specifically called her earlier to ask if it was possible to switch my order to high index lenses. Focus told me Bloom was told it was possible - but Bloom told them (in effect) "never mind, keep it how it is". Why go through the effort of trying to find out if an order can be changed and finding out it can be -- only to not change it and tell me that it was too late to change it? Very bizarre. Learning that my request to have my order upgraded to a better lens quality was intentionally disregarded even though it could have easily been changed was irritating to say the least. Then being lied to about it? That is beyond awful customer service --it is unethical. I decided to ask Ms Bloom (Spex manager) about this. She was very clearly angered that I had somehow figured out that she purposefully ignored my request and exposed the fact that she was dishonest with me. Now confronted with the evidence, she admitted that yes, it was still possible for me to upgrade the lens material to high-index. Since the lenses had not been made, I asked her to use my new script that I just got (the one they had used was 10 years old). She said "no" and that I would have to buy a whole new set...considering the circumstances I expected she would accommodate me - but after some back and forth - she asked me to leave the store. She did not want customers to hear me recount her behavior. She had her manger call me -- Boyce Moffit..who defended Ms. Bloom and asked that I not return to Spex. So to recap... I offered to pay the upgrade difference for better lens quality -- she said she'd look into it and get back to me, then says 'sorry, too late', I check with their lab and find out that's not the case, then call her out on this, and I get banned from the store because of it. What happened to my order? Spex sent the frames and the lenses back to me via mail -- the lenses were purposefully not installed in the frames...in my opinion, a vindictive retaliation for my exposing Ms Bloom's behavior. Because of the above, I filed a complaint against Spex with the Better Business Bureau Complaint ID#: 94249065; Spex did not respond. read more

Brought my expensive Lindberg frames in for repair and was told there would be no charge, but they had to send them back to Denmark to get them repaired. They mentioned that they have many shipments to and from Denmark because they are Lindberg distributors. Went to pick up my glasses and suddenly there is a $30 fee for parts and "return shipping." Not what I expected when I was told that there would be no charge. This place does not play fair. read more

Not worth your time. Literally, on their website it says: "We welcome all insurances". I'd leave a screenshot here if I could. (see for yourself at: https://www.myeyedr.com/). It is part of their marketing. Unfortunately, that is a lie. Go ahead and try to make an appointment at this location (522 Dempster in Evanston) and you will be told that they DO NOT accept Davis Vision insurance. That's what I get from my employer and have used it at many other places without issue. Perhaps being clear with your customers and removing that language from the website would be a better idea. Dishonesty makes for a really bad first impression. Also, when I showed up for my appointment (BEFORE I learned they don't take my insurance), I was immediately greeted by 2 rude/condescending employees. Both of them (man and woman) seemed like they would rather be somewhere/anywhere else. The guy at the counter stared at me with a cold look, only to tell me I'd have to pay full price for my exam, because of the insurance they don't accept. He also tried to tell me that they called me to tell me this before my appointment. They did not. I'm 100% sure. I keep all my voicemails and log my calls thoroughly. Never did I receive a call from them. Just texts to confirm my appt. The guy was rude and clearly didn't give a crap. Complete waste of my time, which I don't take lightly. Stay away. Any company that advertises something that is blatantly untrue is not worth your time, especially when it is your health. There are better places in Evanston for eye exams. read more

OK, so it's been over a month since I bought a new pair of glasses here and I've had time to get use to my glasses. They're great, in fact, best I've ever had. I've been buying at that mall chain for 20 years and decided I wanted something different. I first looked around in January, and the sales woman helped me for about an hour. I told her I needed to wait a month for my insurance to kick in and it wasn't a problem. I stopped back a month later and she showed me some frames that I hadn't considered, but looked really good on me. Now I get compliments on my glasses from random people and I've never been able to see as good with these glasses. Admittedly, I spent more than I expected, but I am very happy with the glasses I got here. I highly recommend this place if you want quality lenses and frames and want to have glasses that are different than everyone else. I will definitely return when I need new glasses. read more

I went with my husband for his eye exam so I could help him pick out a pair of frames. Not only did we not find any that worked (they have only very trendy/fashion styles and not much that looks "classic" for men) but despite having an appointment we spent nearly an hour and a half at the store for his exam. There was a ~20 min wait before his first eye test. Then another ~20 min wait before he saw the doctor. Then she dialated his eyes and we had to wait another ~20 min for that to take effect to complete the exam. It took this long despite the fact that we declined the extra retina tests they recommend to all patients (that are not covered by insurance) and needed only a basic glasses exam. Everyone was friendly and professional but the numerous & lengthy wait times seemed very inefficient to me. read more

So I had gone in a few weeks ago to check out some of the frames because I was WAY overdue for an eye exam and glasses. My wife had taken a look at what chains were covered under her vision plan and Spex came up. After looking online, I found that there was one very close by our place and decided to check it out. It turns out that I've passed by this place several times and even looked in the window a few times and here it was. The location is kind of in a small corner of Evanston close by a Starbucks and across the street from Blindfaith Cafe. Katie, one of the staff at Spex, was very helpful and extremely patient with me. I basically wanted to check out half the frames but she never rushed me. When I came upon a couple of frames I liked, I booked an appointment. It turns out that the Optometrist, Gina, came in only on certain days and her schedule was fairly booked up so I had to set a time that was a couple of weeks out. When I came back and had my eye Exam with Gina, she was very professional and very polite. Also it turns out that she was very thorough and didn't flinch at all when she was detailing out the cost of eye exams and what was or wasn't covered on my insurance. When it came time to check out frames again, the other staff member that I worked with Laura was equally as helpful as Katie. After making my selection now came the fun part. The price. I will be honest and say that it wasn't cheap. Though the insurance covered a significant amount, the frames carried are not the standard designer brands but you get what you pay for. And although they told me that my glasses would be done in 7 days, I was lucky and got them in 3 days! I would definitely recommend this place but be prepared for the price and check with your vision insurance first to get an idea of what will be covered or not. read more

I have been a patron of Spex for about three weeks. I know, right now, that I won't be going back after my order comes in from them. Please, you have the option to go elsewhere! I came in for an appointment on a Saturday. My husband and I had back-to-back appointments right before noon. The appointments started more than 30 minutes late. When I got in, they didn't explain to us the difference in a regular eye appointment and a contact lens appointment. She did both, back-to-back. We got charged $60/ea. for the exams (after what our insurance covered). Then, instead of ordering our original contact lens brands, the doctor wanted us to try a different one. The reasoning she gave my husband for his (he was perfectly fine with his brand!) was different from the ones she gave me (I wasn't completely satisfied with my other ones). I can only imagine it's because these particular contact lenses are pricey. They're $400/yr more than what I pay now! My husband wasn't impressed with the lenses and asked Spex to order his original Acuvue 2s. The woman at the front desk said she had to check with the doc first. Fine. But instead of ordering Acuvue 2, the doc wanted him to order Acuvue Oasys. She didn't even talk to him about why he wanted to switch. My bet is she ordered these because they are more pricey than the 2s. I waited more than a week for my lenses to come in, and when I got them, I knew they wouldn't work. I've been wearing them for two days and my head hurts, my eyes feel like needles are constantly poking them, and they're dry! I called Spex to order different ones. They are making me come in for a follow-up appointment. They say this is mandatory. When I said they didn't require my husband to, the front desk gal switched her tune and said, "Oh..well it's on a case-by-case basis." Me thinks this is fishy. My husband's lenses are far cheaper than mine. I need torics, I have astigmatism in both eyes. And me jumping from expensive brand to Acuvue would save me a HUGE chunk of change. So now I have an eye appointment tomorrow for a follow-up. She said it'd be less than 10 minutes. And I've been told the doctor will tell me what brand she'd like to see me in, and will order what she thinks is right. I'm paying for these things. And I HATE thinking that I'm going to be put in another pair that I hate. And then I'll have to wait another week. And then I'll have to come in for another follow-up. And then I'll get into a nother pair that I hate. I've worn Acuvue's for the past 10 years. I've exhausted all other options. It's not that I refuse to try others. Tho, I guess now, I'm TIRED of trying others. I have no other contacts at home, and am looking at not having any contacts that I love, in hand, for another month at the least. Spex does NOT care about you, or what you want. They care about your insurance, and how much money they can make off you. Please go elsewhere. They are not helpful at all! read more

My husband and I paid over $382 for two pairs of glasses. My glasses came in two weeks as promised, my husband frames came after the two week period. After a month we both received separate bills; mine was for $25 and my husband's bill was $90. When I called to understand the bill, Nina said she couldn't help and would have Elijah call back. Elijah did not call back, i had called back neither one could explain the balance they said the person (angela) who helped us knew why we had a balance and she returned to work tomorrow. Angela calls the next day states she was just told to call me (given no background information) and she too did not know why we had a balance and said she would contact corporate; that was 4 days ago, no one has contacted us with an update! When we first walked in Maggie greeted us and helped us pick out our frames (they have a vast selection). Sebastian was very thorough throughout the exam. Alicia Arroyo was very patient with all of our many questions and made us feel at home. My teenage daughter absolutely loved Dr. Fatima Bukhari. My daughter was in heaven once she saw all the colored contacts available.The staff genuinely cares about their patients. We have absolutely no complaints and found our new Optician. read more

I ended up paying $600 plus dollars for glasses, frames and eye exam because I didn't pre-price. I hear they have more reasonable glasses. They were careful to tell me which ones were on my insurance plan and that helped. However I love my glasses and the service I got there. If you have money it's a great place to go. All the frames were locked in cases, but both opticians were in the back of the store working on the computer. I kept having to find someone to show me, & my daughter, frames, & that person wouldn't stick around in the front to remain available, to unlock cases, make recommendations, etc. If there was some major problem they needed to solve, it would've been nice if they'd acknowledged it, instead of just ignoring two customers. I was 8 minutes late for my appointment, waited in line for a few minutes, and when I got to the front, they told me that I was 12 minutes late, that they were super booked, that they close early on Saturday, and that they would be happy to reschedule me for next week. I've been to this place before (I got my glasses there) and they seem to be always overbooked. What's frustrating about that is that is that they have no problem making me wait, for a lot longer than 12 minutes, if necessary. Won't go back. read more

I went yesterday with my sons for eye exams and glasses for all of us. I have been wearing glasses for a thousand years and my kids have been also for 10 years so I know what is supposed to happen when you go to the eye Dr. I also know that they up sell you no matter where you go. The Dr. was very nice, and I feel the exams were thorough and he took time to listen to concerns. The customer service experience, however, was absolutely the worst. My insurance covers glasses and exams at 100 per cent. I confirmed this with the staff and then asked to see frames while waiting for the Dr. She limply stated, 'these are $130' pointing at the cheap-o frames. I asked if this was with insurance and she said, 'yes' even though this was clearly false. I then called my insurance who called the place and confirmed that the glasses were totally covered. Dr. calls us in, everyone gets seen, great. Now back to the frames. My son picked out a pair and she said they were going to be $60 and she had me sit and wait for an invoice for the exams. (now I am getting irritated since I told her we were in a hurry and I am not sure why I am waiting for an invoice that says I owe nothing.) I tell her I am not paying $60 and she puts the frames away. I asked her why it was not possible to have glasses that are covered by the insurance. 'you can, but that would mean not getting the protection plan.' Seriously? I said, 'OK, just give me that then' She didn't even bother to explain any of this to me, just put the frames back and was done with me. I have NEVER had this happen to me, EVER. So those glasses are ordered, we wait for the invoice for $0 and I will never in my life go back there. There are plenty of other eye places to go without getting all that attitude and complete laziness. Update: They called to say the glasses were ready but when I took my son to pick them up, the lady (the nice one, not hateful side eye) holds up a pair of women's glasses and says, 'these aren't the right ones are they?' um. no. Since being purchased by MyeyeDr. the caliber of optometrists has decreased, my vision needs haven't been met, and the customer service has been very poor. Today, I went for the last time to pick up my vision records, as I plan to tradition to another optometrist. I was told that since Spex was purchased, all of my and my family's Spex records have been purged. In other words, thrown out. Trashing an entire practice's medical records?? I was not notified of this in advance, and have never heard of such a thing. I would definitely avoid this business. read more

I went here for an exam and contacts. The optometrist was very friendly and spent a lot of time answering any questions. All of the support staff was warm and helpful. They explained the cost of contacts and glasses and made sure I got a rebate on my contacts. It was also easy to get an evening appointment. The only reason I took a star off is because it was so expensive. I didn't ask about the cost in advance because I knew my insurance covered an exam, but Spex charged extra for a lot of the tests my prior optometrist did for free (e.g. the one where they dilate your pupils). My wife doesn't have vision insurance and got a more comprehensive exam at Contact Lens World for about the same out of pocket price. Next year I'll go there instead. read more

I bought a pair of Lindbergh frames here 1.5 years ago. The frames, though pricey are terrific. They did become loose and so I took them in for an adjustment. Not only was this done quickly and well, but the staff were very accommodating. They also gave me a new case, lens wipe, and fluid. read more

This would have been a very negative review but for the determined efforts of Alicia at the Dempster St., Evanston, location. The first two attempts to get the different focal areas of my new trifocals properly placed had been futile, and I was despairing of them ever being correct. In stepped Alicia, who immediately realized where her colleagues' mistakes had been made and took it upon herself to get it right. And that is exactly what happened. I have been wearing the glasses for a month, and the focal areas are perfectly aligned, whether I am in front of a computer, watching TV, reading a book or driving. So, yes, I was disappointed that the process took two time-consuming do-overs, but I am very happy with the result. Third time charmed, I guess. Thank you, Alicia. read more

I got new glasses and new lenses for my very expensive sunglasses frames. When the sunglasses came back, they were too wide and literally fell off my face if I even LOOKED down, never mind if I leaned over. I went back to have them adjusted a second time and the tech said that they could only do so much at one time without breaking the frames. I could never use them. I purchased plain sunglasses to wear over my everyday glasses. Today I went back and again and the manager went out of her way to make it MY problem. The frames were really, really old. They weren't responsible for the screw on one bow being stripped. They couldn't do anything for me. Yes, apparently I signed a waiver saying that they weren't responsible for sending out frames to get new lenses, but NO ONE gave me any indication that there would be a problem replacing the lenses so I didn't even read the fine print. This location is very badly run. First of all the manager has a very insulting tone of voice. Alicia. Their computers were down when I was there and the girl at the desk said she could not give me my prescription and the receipt at the time and to call back. When I called back, she took my credit card information and promised she would email me the prescription and receipt (upon asking, she did not offer). Once they got the information they never sent an email. When I called to find out, the manager Alicia stated that due to HIPAA laws I would have to come in to sign a form. She talked over me and she did not apologize for the inconvenience or for having to go in again, in a very offhanded and rude way. She hung up the phone, and gave me a number through which to reach her supervisor where no one answers. I would not use this location again. They always seem to be apologizing for something, whether it's delays due to the computer system, delays due to having too many phone calls or whatever. Very badly run location. read more
