This restaurant is located in a shopping plaza with other businesses with shared parking in front. We came to the restaurant early one Sunday morning. We were seated right away. The employees that we engaged with were pleasant and attentive. I ordered the one egg combo with bacon, potatoes, eggs, and a biscuit. It didn't take long for our food to be brought out to us. The food was served hot. The potatoes and the biscuit were good. The biscuit was soft. The bacon was a little greasy and the eggs were a little too wet for my liking. Tables are old school banquet tables with the metal bars restricting your legs from extending. The service was solid, nothing special. The menu looked great, except they didn't have country fried steak. My omelette and home fries were ok, but I sincerely prefer Waffle House. My son attempted the 3 hot cake challenge and miserably failed. He ate one. The biscuits and French toast were very dry. The prices are far greater than Waffle House for a lesser product. First timer! We have heard a lot about this spot and seems pretty popular in the area. I know they have multiple locations so we tried the one in garner. There was a line, but it moved pretty quickly. Maybe a 5-10 minute wait. We both ordered the fried catfish breakfast, his with grits and mine with home style fries aka hash-browns( that's what I'm use to calling them back home). My bf ordered a biscuit and I did the hot cake. Warming the hot cake is HUGE. Like extremely massive. One is perfect for the table. It has a sweet flavor to it, kind of like cornbread. I really enjoyed it. I will say that the catfish tasted pretty salty. And I think it was more the batter than it was the actual fish, because the fish seemed as if it was seasoned perfectly. We are normally ok with saltier food, so it wasn't a problem for us, but of note to others if that's the norm. read more

Good place to stop in for some southern cooking. I have been here for both breakfast and dinner. For breakfast, I ordered a pancake, an egg, and bacon. Pancake was thick and fluffy, and they used a pound cake batter for the pancakes. It's definitely one of my favorite pancakes in the area. Their dinner menu rotates, so something they'll have one thing on the menu, then other times they don't. I like that meals come with a dessert and I'll always choose banana pudding. Service is usually quick and attentive. Our waitress checked in often enough not to be overwhelming but also just right to make sure we had what we needed. There is nothing fresh tasting about the omelettes. Hey, the home fries were crispy and good though. We have been at Big Ed's too many times to think it will get better , but after the past few times with uncooked meat and sausage etc, we won't be returning. I ordered deviled eggs, one pancake, country ham and tomato juice. The deviled eggs would definitely not fresh and did not taste good. The pancake was the size of the plate which is OK, but it really wasn't cooked well nor did it have a great flavor. I asked for lemon for my tomato juice did not get that. I immediately got pain in my stomach after my meal . I asked if they had pure maple syrup and was given la dirty look by the old lady behind the counter who was not very pleasant, not very friendly. The waitress was very nice and very sweet. The cashier to check out also very nice and very sweet. It's a little pricey, definitely not worth it. I've eaten at Big Ed's Garner on so many occasions and it hasn't disappointed me yet. Our women's group visited on a Wednesday for brunch. I called ahead to say we had 14 and they had us covered. Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable as she shared tips about the food items. We quickly got our beverages and placed our orders. Our meals came out quickly. Plated nicely and pleasing to the eye. I had tuna salad, collards and pickled beets. I got two large scoops of tuna...enough for 3-4 people. I ate off that plate 3 times. There was no sweet pickle relish in the tuna salad but it had a good flavor. The collards were fresh, not greasy and seasoned with something a little salty. They gave me two little packs of crackers with all of that tuna. Okay come on now...at least 4 packs y'all. Nice experience at Big Ed's. To start a 20/30 min wait turned into over 55 mins when the hostess had no clue how to seat patrons. She continued to sit people at tables she kept saying to her counter part they could have pushed together for our party of 8. Finally seated, our waitress even stating how terrible the hostess is and issues they have had. Although a nice enough server, providing biscuits fast as we were all very hungry at this point, the food come with missing pieces, one missing order that came out wrong not to mention another order not even having what made it what it was supposed to be, Bananas Foster with NO BANANAS. One would have expected some sort of discount, help with the bill at this point for missing food, corrections that had to be made etc and correction of bill for food that did not show up , ie. Pancakes we sat and had to remind her never made it to the table. Cold french toast missing the bananas. But , no, full price for all of it. Then as we are leaving a waitress behind us spills a drink which spills and splashes on my legs , no apology or seeing if we are ok , no quick action to clean thee spill and one of their own people takes a horrible fall , i help her get to her feet as well as other patrons. needless to say they need some serious help and certainly need to find a Hostess that understand how to seat people and engage with people. read more

Gotta love Big Ed's! This is an additional location of the Raleigh-famous good ole country restaurant that started in Downtown Raleigh. I moved to Clayton a few years ago, but worked in Garner. I was glad to find out there was a location much closer. This restaurant is located off Benson Rd in a shopping center with a Food Lion and various other business and restaurants. There is plenty of parking, but just keep in mind it's not just Big Ed's so you may have to look for a park. I've never had an issue finding a park though and there's Handicapped parks readily available as well. There is a specific door for entering the restaurant which takes you directly to the host stand to check-in. Be aware that during breakfast hours on the weekends especially there may be a wait, but it usually moves fairly quickly so don't be discouraged if you see a line or people waiting. Now on to the food...Good ole country food at good prices! Although most people probably come for breakfast, lunch options are also good and they are also open for dinner or some days as well. The lunch and dinner menu varies daily, so make sure to check their website or call the restaurant for that day's menu. You generally can't go wrong here in my opinion! I've always been pleased with anything I've ordered. I usually get the 2 egg with meat breakfast. The omelettes are good and large as well as the catfish. Be warned...the pancakes are HUGE! It's what Big Ed's is known for so don't think you can order 3 and eat them all in one sitting. read more

My server let me know that 1 pancake would be enough since it's the size of your head! I got a spicy sausage patty to go with it. That's when things got weird. Neither the pancake or sausage were cooked fresh. Both were warmed up. No butter on the pancake. It wasn't hot enough to melt butter. The small sausage was tasty for sure. This place fell flat on flavor and service. The restaurant space is great, however, so there is great potential here. Tables were spaced nicely, they have a center breakfast counter - no alcohol for those wondering. The eggs were average, home fries were great actually. The grits were boxes and the catfish could have been prepared better. Biscuits tasted good. Really, the main issue was the slow service. It didn't seem too crowded, maybe they were under staffed? When places came up that I would recommend, "Big Ed's, was one of them and based on my fond memories of eating there with my coworkers and family, I gladly described my experience of that location in downtown Raleigh. I hadn't been to the Garner location at the time of my first review. I apologize for the misunderstanding. I've since eaten at the one in Garner, and it isn't the same. The food isn't prepared the same, nor is as good and the ambiance with the lanterns, smell of tobacco leaves and old memorabilia is gone. I had the omelet, grits and toast to go. When I got home, I was disappointed. I'm not sure how an omelet and grits were undercooked. The older waitress/manager was nice. She apologized for the long wait to get my order. During COVID-19, all employees are wearing masks and dine-in and carry-out options are available. We chose carry-out. This location does not accept online orders so we called to place an order. Ordering and pick-up was quick and easy. All employees we interacted with were helpful and friendly. Before leaving I checked the order and it was 100% accurate. We ate at home and enjoyed our meal. I especially enjoyed the omelets and biscuits. We were not a fan of the gravy (not bad, just a different kind than we are used to) or the buttered rice (no flavor). The prices are affordable and the portion sizes are large. We recommend this restaurant to others and plan to return! read more
