I should have known when the cashier rang me up at 24.01 and I asked are you rounding down and the answer was no I got .95 back. I love the new math. This was for a two meat combo with a drink. Seems very pricey for lunch. I watched order come out wrong before I got my order that was wrong as well. It was simple stuff, but still not that busy. Mine was a very simple order fatty brisket, smoked sausage, hush puppies and okra. I wound up with cornbread rather than hush puppies. The brisket was definitely not fatty. It was pretty much the opposite so it had no moisture. I don't know what's happened to the attention to detail On the counter where you pick your food up, there were about 20 single serve containers set on a tray that someone was filling would looked like ranch out of a gallon jug. This was left wide open for someone to sneeze, cough or anything else into as you were reaching over to grab your food. Every one of the single use containers was wide open. No tables were cleaned off when customers left. I have not eaten here in a while and will probably not be back anytime soon. read more

I dined in at City Barbeque about two weeks ago with my family and overall it was just okay for me. I ordered the leg quarter, ribs, mac and cheese, collard greens, bread, and banana pudding. The staff at the front were friendly and the restaurant itself seemed clean from what I could see. The sweet sauce was actually pretty good. The regular sauce was just okay. The food overall was very mid for me. The ribs had decent flavor but there wasn't much meat on them and they were just tender, not really the kind that fall off the bone. The leg quarter was juicy but kind of bland and definitely needed sauce to bring it to life. The mac and cheese was mostly cheese with very little pasta. The collard greens had way too much vinegar for my taste. The bread was soft but dry at the same time and didn't really feel like anything special. The banana pudding was decent, probably one of the better things I had that day. My main issue overall is the value. For the price, the portions just don't really match what you're paying. It felt a little underwhelming for what it is. Overall, it's not terrible food, it just didn't impress me and I probably wouldn't go back often. read more

I'm leaving 5 stars not only for the delicious barbecue but also for the amazing customer service from the team on shift at 5pm Sunday (9/21). I had placed a very large order two hours prior, but they ran out of ribs :(. The staff immediately stepped up--offering me either a refund or comparable substitutes, which I went with because I needed to feed an army. Truly appreciated it! I picked up the order and set up a whole spread, and it turned out to be a fan favorite! Everything was flavorful, generous, and served with care. A friend and I drove 30 minutes to eat here; we would not do it again. Not because it is awful; it's not. It is just quite mediocre. My friend had the 3 meat platter (with creamy coleslaw and cornbread) and I had a half rack with fried okra & cornbread. We agree that the cornbread was tasty; he said the creamy coleslaw and the sausage were the best things on the tray. I liked the fried okra. we are frequent CBQ customers mainly at the North Raleigh location. We did this one as we were in the area. 1. No beer 2. No Sausage 3. No bread ready 4. She said she would bring it out when ready. 5. She did not 6. I went up to see where it was and saw she was giving bread out with meals as I was standing there. 7. The service here was nice. The cashier was friendly and attentive while we ordered and so was the person who gave us our food. The place isn't too loud which allows you to have a nice conversation with the person across from you without having to yell. As for the food, it could he better. We ordered the beef brisket and felt it was missing something. It wasn't the worst sandwich but it did seem a little bit dry. We did love the mac and cheese though, and could definitely return for it. The place could also use some cleaning up, as the floors were dirt and some tables were sticky. The restaurant is very nice on the inside, set up like other bbq restaurants where you order and then pick up at the counter before sitting in the dining room. The service is good, no issues with the ordering or pickup process. The food was ok. The brisket sandwich was good together with some added bbq sauce but a little messy and when I ate a piece of brisket by itself, it was extremely dry and hard to swallow. The Mac and cheese was a little dry as well. I know it was likely baked but there was zero creaminess to it. Brisket seems to always go fast and quick. Today they were out of chili and brisket. Told us they'd have more in an hour. We went to target to waste some time, came back and were lucky enough to get some because they were almost out of brisket again lol. Tea container was empty, out of forks (they were washing them), and bathroom was out of paper towels and tables were dirty. Just ate lunch there and was so disappointed. The brisket was tasteless and tough and the cornbread was fishy - like bad oil. The tray they served the food on was greasy on the bottom, so I had to use the ladies room to clean my hands before eating. The ladies room was dirty (not recent mess, but dirty) and in disrepair. Was there at 11:20am, so this can't be blamed on customers. Clearly the closing shift didn't clean for a couple of days. One of the two toilets was out of order, which happens, but the actual stalls were not straight and left gaping holes. Was super stoked to try this place as I've recently embarked on my bbq journey as a bbq-hater, turned lover -- But this place was so mid (actually kind of worse than mid.) Firstly, every table was dirty. You've got five people in the back (it's 7PM, Wednesday, only one party of three and ourselves in here, nobody in line). Haven't seen any of them come out to wipe down tables. Secondly, the forks that are accessible for everyone to just grab is facing prongs up, which is also just a tiny detail that's lowkey gross. So onto the food, I was so disappointed after my boyfriend raved about the City BBQ in Cary and after I've been spoiled by Original Carolina BBQ (I'd recommend them 1000% over this, I'm sorry). The BBQ contrary to Original Carolina is not vinegar-based, much like ENC BBQ is. I tried the slaw on its own and it literally tasted like nothing. The pulled-pork itself was flavorless, so mixing that with the bland slaw, just left me with pork that was honestly 70% fatty-bits and an extremely greasy top bun. My hand was drenched in grease. Got the Mac and Cheese and hush puppies as a side, and out of all of my meal, the only thing that was hot were the hush puppies -- Which were actually tasty and had a good texture. The mac and cheese was room temperature. Like sitting out, not even under a warmer, room temperature. The sandwich also not even an ounce of heat. The bun cold. I never ever try to judge harshly but honestly after starving at work all day and coming to this to look for some comfort food, this left me cranky. Sorry. read more

Went there at 6pm on Mon 4/14 and it was not busy. They had plenty of people working, but they were all doing as little as possible. There was a girl with a weird purple/red colored hair color fixing the food. She was speaking loudly and throwing around F Bombs, about 4 times in less than a minute. She was telling a story to what looked like a manager in a red shirt, and he didn't tell her to watch her month. Then he dropped a F Bomb too before they stopped. They were not fighting, just didn't care. The place was a complete mess with no one paying any attention to cleaning it. Please see pics. The guy in the red shirt left at 7:10pm without cleaning anything nor giving any instruction to anyone else to clean up. Maybe he wasn't a manager, don't know for sure. I highly recommend if you are in the Garner, NC area and there are other locations around North Carolina. Perfect Option for every type of meat eater! Convenience: I stopped to get fuel during my travel on the road and stumbled across City Barbecue. It is conveniently located in a mall center where there is a SHEETZ gas station and other shops. I was traveling off of I-95, so it was a 30 minute ride, but it is near I-40. Environment: There is inside and outside seating. I chose to seat outside and it was nice plus the weather was beautiful and it was during the sun setting. Quality: I tried the Brisket Chili, Fried Okra, Fries, Pulled Chicken Sandwich, Turkey Breast Sandwich, Baked Beans with Brisket and Peach Cobbler Brisket Chili: Never had before and loved it! 10/10 Fried Okra: Could have been fried harder, but it still satisfied the taste 9/10 Fries: Well-Seasoned 10/10 Pulled Chicken Sandwich: Well Seasoned, Moist- Melts in Your Mouth 10/10 (My Favorite) Turkey Breast Sandwich: Good flavor, but a bit dry the unfortunate dilemma of white meat it is easy to dry out 7/10 Baked Beans with Brisket: I loved that it included beef versus the traditional option pork 10/10 Peach Cobbler: Crust perfect, peaches well-baked 10/10 Price: I paid $28 dollars for two people. I placed an order for curbside pickup and arrived just after it was supposed to be ready. I clicked the "I'm here" button in the app and waited. And waited. I then went inside and waited. I watched while the counter staff did everything but greet me or check in to see if I had a pickup order. Finally someone noticed and grabbed the bag of food for me. Upon arriving home, I eagerly opened up the bag and my family dug it. The food was ... not great. While I don't expect city BBQ to be like Franklin or skylight inn, I definitely expect it to be better than whatever this stuff is. The brisket was extra fatty, the pork was mostly flavorless, and the collards were somehow chewy. If this was my first experience with city bbq I would never come back. Sunday afternoon and the place is not that busy, with most tables empty--the likely reason being they were filthy with leftover food and the floors were much the same. Come on people, you're not that busy and the place is dirty and that makes me wonder if the food processes are to be questioned. City Barbecue is one of my favorite eateries because they never lose sight of a very important detail about dining out: it's supposed to be fun! There's a sign over the foid counter that says they create happiness, and they do. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere may not look like much, but itge staff make it welcoming and all about savoring their food. We had the Pick Two plate; make your selection of two different or double servings of their meats. I chose the brisket (juicy and tender) and sausage (rich and juicy) with corn pudding (delightfully sweet and flavorfu - a Must Try( and potato salad (creamy and delicious), while my husband got a double shot of sausage with collards and macaroni-and-cheese (which he said was yummy). I topped off dinner with Peach Cobbler that tastes as good as grandma made. The staff is friendly and welcoming and it's well worth your time to download their app. You'll accrue points to use as savings (I got five dollars off), free dessert or apps, etc, plus notices of specials. After eating there I would advise coming early as it everything seems to have just been reheated. Had the sampler plate: chicken thigh was very good, brisket and sausage were good as well. Pulled pork was very disappointing and dry. The reason this drops to three stars is the sauces, they were overly sweet, no heat. Tip to patrons mix the bbq sauce with a little bit of the swine wine. The aesthetic of the restaurant is homely and great for a bbq spot..however.. I been here on 2 different occasions to make sure to give an honest review. The staff was very much doing the bare minimum. I do not recommend the brisket, it's all dry and not enjoyable. I got a new item on the menu: not a sloppy joe and a side of beans with brisket..sigh.
