Big Eyed Fish on Wells Street - when you have a craving for Fish & Stroh style fish and tarter sauce Yes, I know that I could go to Stroh to get this old time flavor. However, Big Eyed Fish is pretty good fish in its own right, local...and flavored like the taste I remember from the past. We visited the Big Eyed Fish location on Well's street. They have an express shop located on Huegenard Road and another dine in location at Leo Crossing. This location has been in service since 2003. It has a nice diner feel with super friendly service. You can find parking on the street or in the lot behind the store. The inside is rather large and works well for parties up to about 8 diners. There is a small bar and TV's if that is your thing. They also have a big and varied menu including breakfast items. Here is a run down of the food items: -Fried Fish: the white fish fillet is thin and fried with a thin breading. The fish is moist and tender. It will flake apart with a fork or by hand. The breading has a slight amount of seasoning and isn't very oily to taste. It has a taste similar to the Fish & Stroh style if you are familiar with that. The fillets are not very filling. For an extra $3...I went with the all you can eat option. Delicious fish! -Tarter Sauce: I love tarter sauce. In fact I might order fish to go with my tarter sauce - lol. This mayo based sauce is reasonably thick, somewhat sweet and has a hint of pickle flavoring. It's creamy and makes a perfect complement to the fried fish flavor. -Baked Beans: this side really surprised me. The bean is small and contained hamburger pieces. The sauce had a slight BBQ flavor but not enough to classify it as a BBQ baked bean dish. The meat flavor was a nice add to the smooth tomato spiced sauce. Delicious!! -Cole Slaw: I kind of use KFC as the standard for Cole Slaw. This is very similar. The slaw pieces are cut very small with only one kind of slaw. Seemingly no additives - just slaw. The sauce is mayo based, a bit more sweet along with a hint of vinegar. I loved this side too! -Hush Puppies: these balls are pretty small in diameter. The inside is very modista and sweet with that southern style corn bread taste. The outside is thicker, a bit oily to taste and has a mild corn bread taste/texture. These are probably some of the best hush puppies I've had in my southern raised life. read more

Went to the Big Eyed Fish on DuPont Ft Wayne In today. Wasted my money. Spent almost $17.00 for burnt food. Waited at the window for 4 minutes until someone came. Then she opened the window and said I will be with in in a few. Problem is I was the only one in line and no one was inside at the counter. So disappointed. The girl at the counter was refusing to make the DoorDash order that I needed to deliver despite the customer as well as myself stating that a different Dasher had picked up the order and canceled prior to delivering yet they still refused to make the order. It's in a convenient location with plenty of seating. The waitress was friendly. However, the salad was a letdown and the bread was just okay. The fish was tasty, but it came out cold. I was looking forward to a Miller Lite, but it wasn't available on tap. The ranch dressing was a disappointment and didn't taste or taste like ranch. Husband wanted fish. This is our "go to" for fish. I was hungry for a burger. They gave both of the best imo.. There burgers are cooked to perfection. Still juicy and full of flavor. Just some cheese , onion n mayo. Delicious. Their cook knows how to make the best burger vI ever had. Oh and can't forget those crispy yummy fries. That being said both were better then the nasty crap I got at Burger-Fi at Jefferson Point on Monday. And cheaper too. Went to Big Eyed fish for lunch. Very modest atmosphere but clean as a whistle. I had the tuna and my husband had the salmon. The salmon was slightly over cooked, I think the baked potatoes were cooked in the microwave as they Were not fluffy at all. Five stars for the service. Refreshing to see such a genuine smile & attentive service. A level of service I generally see at high end restaurants, exemplary. Mom had an omelette (your choice of 3 ingredients) hash browns, raisin toast & included coffee. I had 2 eggs, toast & coffee ($2.50). Both together were under $10, including 2 cups of coffee. The exterior & interior are nicely painted but you feel like you are stepping back in time when you step inside. The chairs & bar stools look like they are from the 80's. The service was great. A new cook must have been in training as we could hear the loud instructions being given to him. The onion rings were average frozen variety. My baked potato was disgusting- it had to have been cooked the day before from the brown color of the insides of the potato. I should have been told that the potatoes had sold out & to pick something else. The one piece of fish tasted ok but the 2nd piece had an off taste. Not a fishy taste but an off taste. I went to this place several months ago when I was visiting Fort Wayne. I was pleasantly surprised and had a wonderful meal of bluegill fish! So I went back today since I'm visiting again and did not have a good experience! Fish was piping hot but VERY fishy. The French fries and hush puppies were barely warm and some fries were hard in the middle and a few of the hush puppies were still a little mushy in the middle. All this cost me 20$ without a drink. Sad to say I won't be returning. I ate what I could and did not complain. I figured a bad review would bring more attention to the owner or manager.
