How fun was this place ... we were on a road trip to see our youngest further up Vermont and it was getting late so we needed to eat. While they have parking, it was full and it was unclear where else we could park without violating parking rules. Once we figure that out, in we went and it was packed! It was a Friday night and there were having live music. The staff was lovely and found us a space in the corner. We split a meal and got burnt ends and ribs. We also ordered some fries and the cornbread. WARNING: the cornbread (which they also warn you about) has bacon it it. I thought the burnt ends were good - just needed a little more umph, but they had sauces at the table. The ribs were also tasty, but I stuck with the burnt ends. The fries were a good match for what we ordered, but the cornbread was not my style. I think I like it sweeter, but the bacon took it another direction. Still good, just not my taste. This will definitely be in our rotation of where to go when we visit our kid. read more

Went across from brewery to see Fattys. I love ribs so I got ribs and chicken. Comes with a decent slaw. First ribs came out at room temp. I ate one and then called the server over for a look. Good: The Cole slaw was amazing. Not to sweet. The brisket was fatty and delicious. And the steak was on the dinner special perfectly cooked. Mid: The sides that the steak came with were meh. It had hash browns - wasn't special, and the green beans - it was dry and the amount was very limited. Bad: We came in 30 mins before closing. They took the cornbread away from the salad bar before we got to it. Also they ran out of ice tea, so I literally just got one glass and was told that they were not going to make another batch just for me. What a name for a restaurant! Big Fattys has decent barbecue in Vermont. You get to seat yourself but be warned: there's limited seating available and it gets packed indoors on Saturday nights. Fatty's also has a large salad bar for vegetarians or those who need fiber to accompany their heavy meat dish. There's live folk music on Thursday thru Saturday from 5:00-7:30PM. Who doesn't love Big Fatty's BBQ?! I'm trying to give it 4.5 stars but Yelp won't let me. You can only eat like this - grand Texas BBQ style - in the Upper Valley in very few places. I know of 2 places - in total - but the other is only open 3 times per week. Big Fatty's is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but open from 12-8 daily, otherwise. Our Fatty's Baked Beans were so good and even more delicious than I remembered them to be! These were more sweet and perhaps fancied-up for autumn because they had a lovely, surprising and delicious flavor of fall apples. If you took a vat of mulling spices and seasoned the mix of beans in this, and then boiled them in it, I'm guessing they might taste similar to these. What a fabulous surprise, and an innovative recipe. We enjoyed the Smoked and Sliced Kielbasa with Ryan's barbecue maple mustard sauce as one of two appetizers. Loved the kielbasa, especially the ones which were darker and crispier. The maple mustard sauce was sweet and delicious, though the maple flavor was more subtle. We also ordered the hush puppies with honey. These are the most sturdy, cornmeal-like hush puppies I've had. Dipping them in honey is good. Butter on them would be even better. The Bottle of Homemade BBQ Sauce at every table totally rocks here! I never have found a barbecue sauce that I was really enamoured with until now. How do you get all of the right notes of whiskey sweet, smoky thick and umami presence all in one sauce? Come to Momma! I ordered the smoked bbq 1/4 Chicken & 8oz. Texas Beef Brisket platter. The brisket literally falls apart when you take a bite. The chicken was juicy and fine, seared well. The cole slaw is traditional, yet substantial in texture and flavor. I look forward to the bbq here! For sides, we enjoyed a large order of seasoned Fatty Fries. They are perfect. The Homemade Cabot Mac & Cheese is rich, sharp and buttery. Very good. Were the tiny red ingredients smoked cherries or cranberries in our cornbread? The server didn't know and the manager was not available at that time, but I will update this review if I find out. Gorgeous presentation. Big, substantial lovely slabs of cornbread with whole, mildly chewy kernels of corn sprinkled throughout. The pecan pie was lovely on my last visit and this time, again, even more so. I learned a lesson with this pecan pie which is how to judge other pecan pies. Because this one became my new standard for the best I've had. Why? It's the way Big Fatty's roasts or smokes the pecans: the texture and flavor are perfect! And the filling is not one big layering of overly-sweet glop. Instead, it's a medium-sized layering of sweet and boiled, chopped pecans and other ingredients (typically dark brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, granulated sugar, eggs and vanilla extract). Maybe they use maple syrup and whiskey extract, here, instead. And then the crust: it's not cakey like the kind that gets kind of stuck in your mouth to chew. It's so good: light and flakey in texture, browned and high on the shortening end. All of the ingredients in the Big Fatty's pecan pie come together for fabulousness. And, I'm here to tell you, it's good for breakfast. Seriously, not too sweet with morning coffee plus added protein from the pecans. The strawberry cheesecake was creamy and good. The strawberries are actually inside of the cheesecake. That was a first! Stopped into Big Fatty's for lunch soon after arriving in town. Full disclosure is we were trying to put eyes on the Elixir restaurant to make reservations and guess what - they share a parking lot with this place. The front door is decorated with a large pig statue and just inside there are two entrances - one into the dining area and one for selling the microbrews made locally. We entered the dining room to find all the tables taken but thanks to a super ambitious waiter and a courteous couple, we were seated at the other end of a table and ordered some drinks. Ordered a pulled chicken sandwich to eat and for a full restaurant with a continuous to-go line at the register I was surprised how quickly the food arrived. The pulled pork was good - I didn't notice any smoky flavor but it was good. The coleslaw that came with it was fair, fresh and crisp but lacking flavor. All in all an acceptable lunch on the fly in White River Jct. if I'm back I'd definitely try the brisket or ribs. Hopefully have more flavor. read more

This is a solid option for BBQ. Problem is they close at 8pm. Got the brisket and ribs combo with an extra side of baked beans. What went right: brisket was great, soft and moist. Ribs came right off the bone and had a perfect cook on them. Baked beans were delicious and did not need anything added. Also got the Carolina and the habanero bbq sauces. Spice level and flavor were on point! What went wrong: of course you could tell brisket was reheated, the bark on it was soft. Coleslaw was unfortunately flavorless. Very disappointed in that. Ended up with a small Mac and cheese because they ran out of baked beans and couldn't give me the full 16, only 8oz. Mac and cheese was alright. But biggest pitfall was probably the wait. Ordered online, said it would be ready in 30min, had to wait over an hour to get the food. If you're willing to wait this place can be worth it. Give it a go read more

The girls were friendly, not a lot of chitchat. I like the brisket I wish they were cut thinner but I do love their baked beans! Not sure why it takes so long for the food to come out when the only food piping hot are the beans. My daughter didn't like the Mac n cheese, she said it doesn't taste like anything and it's fatty. It would have probably helped if the food came out hot or at least warm, instead you can see the fat solidified. read more

I am in town for business. I stopped here 2 days in a row because the food is really amazing. It's not easy finding good BBQ up north so when I get some I go back for seconds. The staff are really friendly and when you enter seat yourself is nice. When it's busy don't expect instant service (just like southern BBQ joints) and the wait is worth it. The place is clean and not too loud. They also have a salad bar you can eat in or take out. I have to say the brisket is truly amazing and I wouldn't turn anything on the menu down. This place is legit! Was in town for a couple days and found it Google. Man, listen. Best pulled pork sandwich I've had in a long time. Tender. Flavorful. The bun was soft. Could've eaten it without bbq sauce. Put the cole slaw on it and oh my goodness, I built the perfect sandwich. I'll put it up against any pulled pork I've eaten before. Pork ribs were solid. Nice glaze. Tender. Juicy. My 11 y/o loved them. The Mac n cheese was a little bit too much cheese and not enough mac. But the flavor was there. Just lacking on the Mac. Passing through town and found this place on Google Maps. After seeing the good reviews on Yelp, I decided to give it a try. I placed an order on the phone, and was told it'd take about 20 minutes. There is a big parking space outside the restaurant. There were about 4 tables of customers inside which was pretty surprising considering the weeknight and almost closing time. The staff was friendly and the order was ready when I got there. I ordered Combo 8oz briskets & 8oz burnt ends and Combo 1/4 ribs & pulled chicken. Combo order comes with a small slaw. The food was incredibly delicious and the flavor was marinated perfectly imo. Food was fresh and good portion. Next time I'm in the area I will definitely stop by again to try the smoked sausage. Surprisingly good! Walked in around 6:45pm on a Sunday night (mother's day) and it was pretty packed. I was pretty surprised by the live music, two people singing and playing guitar. It was nice a but a bit loud so our party could not really have a conversation until the music stopped. However, there was seating outside which would have been less noisy. The barbecue was good! Chicken was very tender and flavorful, pulled pork was standard, and ribs were also standard. Beans and coleslaw were fine by me. My wife loved the baked beans. 5 stars given that this is southern styled bbq in Vermont, adding some much needed dining optionality to the Upper Valley. The first come first serve seating can be a bit hectic. If the restaurant is always this busy they should probably consider assigned tables like a normal restaurant. read more

***Vegetarian Review of a BBQ Restaurant*** We tried to eat here a few days before, but it was packed and there was no hope of a table, so we were kind of surprised to snag a table on a Friday night. We had our dog with us so we needed an outside table, which is first come first serve. Once seated our server was great even though they are clearly understaffed (like every place else!). We really liked the beer selection and enjoyed some good local brews with our meal. I am always so happy when there is something vegetarian on the menu at BBQ places, so I was excited to try their portobello-cap burger and it was great. It was served with fries and left me full at the end of the meal. I also tried the onion rings which came with a nice dipping sauce and were large in size, but my order came a little burnt. A note for the other vegetarians out there, the cornbread comes with chucks of pork baked into it. In terms of the meats, my companion didn't like the brisket or the ribs, so maybe try the pulled pork! One suggestion to the restaurant to improve the experience would be to set up a place to queue outside when waiting for tables to open up. Currently there is no clear place to wait in line and there is more than one entrance to the restaurant so it's impossible to wait for something to open when its busy. read more
