Topher and his squad provided appetizers and the main meal at our daughter's wedding at Squam Lake. He really knocked the ball out of the stadium on this wedding event. We stopped while visiting Woodstock. It was a Friday evening and we didn't have reservations. There were no tables inside so we were seated outside on the deck. I am Celiac, so I was questioning different items on the menu to see if they were gluten-free. The majority of the waitstaff didn't know much about whether items were gluten-free or not. They did go back to the cooks and find out. We had the chips & guacamole, and street corn cob as an appetizer. The chips for the chips and guac were mostly broken, which was disappointing, but the guacamole was very good. The tortilla chips are not gluten-free. They are made of corn, but are cooked in the same fryer as the churros which means they are cross contaminated. The street corn on the cob was excellent and we found out, gluten-free. Two of the members of our group had burritos. They were very big and well wrapped. They both enjoyed them. The rest of us had tacos. We had Carne Asada. (Excellent!), tuna (also very good) and pork (excellent!). If you don't like spice, the pork is the way to go. I ordered the chickpea and sweet potato side with my tacos. It was so spicy it was un edible. Even those in our group who like a lot of spice said it was too much and I couldn't eat it. Overall, it was a great meal. We really enjoyed ourselves. One of our favorite spots in the Upper Valley! They've expanded their non alcoholic beverage list and it's PHENOMENAL. Get the coconut mango limeade or the maple guava lemonade -- SO GOOD. The trick is knowing the hours, still checking the website or calling to see if it's open and being there in the right season. We loved everything we ordered. I think we came at an off night for Trail Break given the overwhelmingly positive reviews. When we arrived we were able to snag seats at the bar and our waitress came over after about 5 minutes. We ordered immediately (which was a struggle given their NIGHTMARE to read and navigate website menu) and waited about 45 minutes for our food, which was tacos and quesadillas (aka some of the quickest food to make). The blackened fish was tasty, as was the chips with salsa and guac trio, but everything else was just off. First off they were out of nearly every side they had at 7 pm on a Saturday night, and were out of two of their ~7 taco options. I ended up getting the chickpea mash side which was so sickeningly sweet it was like coated in maple syrup. I didn't like it at all. The other taco I got was the black bean, onion, cotija cheese and tater tot one. I don't know what I was thinking with that but I do not recommend. Super strange flavor combination. Would love to come back and try it again when they're having a better night. Giving it 3 stars because our waitress was super sweet and generous with extra chips, and the inside is super cute and welcoming and we were able to snag seats right away without a reservation. read more

I had the seared tacos (marinated, shaved carne asada) and my husband had the grilled tacos (shredded, spice-braised chicken). He was happy enough with his meal, and I with mine, though there were some tough bits in the carne asada. Overall flavors were quite good, and the tater tots were an interesting textural addition - though they didn't add much flavor. We stopped in for dinner and were seated immediately. The restaurant is very spacious and bright. For starters we had chips with some spicy sauce, guacamole and a pineapple sauce. There was a healthy portion of chips and interestingly enough everyone at the table had a different take on which sauce was best, personally I liked the spicy one. For our entrees we had the chicken quesadillas, steak quesadillas, and a couple of serving of tacos. The chicken quesadillas were ok, the carne Asada quesadillas were a bit dry. My girlfriend enjoyed the Mahi Mahi taco but not so much the carne Asada one. The one thing they enjoyed was the sweet plantains. I'm sad this place is closing soon and moving to Quechee. It's been a staple of WRJ, and I've been coming here for years. It's such a desperately needed fun and vibey place to grab food and drinks in this area, and we always have a good time. The food can be a little hit or miss--stick with the pork and beef items, and steer clear of the seafood, which is where they struggle. Skip the tuna tacos, which had too many flavors going on at once, and the fish burrito, which is bland. My personal favorite item is the left coast burrito, which tastes nothing like Mexican food, but more like something delicious your best friend might whip up in their home kitchen to cure your hangover. My other go-to is the nachos, but subbing in their delicious pork instead of the chili, which is too salty. The nachos are enormous (can easily split it between 4+ people), and they do a wonderful job of layering all the delicious toppings so each bite has a good amount of topping. For apps, I always get the duck wings, which are perfectly fried and tossed in a sweet Asian-inspired sauce. The tap list is stellar, and their horchata is also delicious. And if you're lucky and they're not too busy, their house popcorn that they bring when you sit down is also addictively spiced. The inside is so much fun with a ski/snowboard theme and an actual ski lift you can sit in if you happen to reserve the big table (I'll really miss this). The staff are also excellent. I had long heard rumors that the owner was a real jerk, but these rumors were confirmed via his comments on the restuarants' page. Their comments show an insensitivity to the plight of working class and service industry people as well as a disregard for their own image as a restaurant. Made a Saturday reservation for my husband's birthday for 6 cause we have been here twice before and liked the food and beer menu. Though the second time they were short staffed . . . The staff is absolutely excellent! I ordered a skinny margarita and another bartender asked me how it was I said it was fine. He said fine? Not great? He then proceeded to add to it to make it perfect! And talking to him he said even when he's not working he comes in and works because he loves the place. I had two tacos chips and guacamole. One of the best dinners we've had in the last ten years. In terms of ambiance, service and food, this was unforgettable. Family and friends and the food made it possible. We'll be coming over here again. Trail Break is located in a new building still sporting for rent signs. Even then, given the recent proliferation of restaurants, arts and nightlife in this once sedate town, parking can be a problem during peak hours. We parked by the rear of the restaurant with only two or three parking spots left available. Walking down by the side towards the front entrance, we noticed the ample al fresco area with an old ski lift chair and as well, an old gondola car as functional parts of the seat space. Several groups were having animated conversations with their dinner. Once inside, the place is airy, clean, modern, ample and friendly. We were ushered to our seats in a jiffy and our waiter, Clint, an energetic and eager server, attended us during our dinner. Trail Break is Mexican infused food with an avant-garde twist. They've taken everyday plates and turned them into culinary creations. Simple stuff like popcorn or corn on the cob become feasting items. The watermelon daiquiri is an elixir of the gods. Crab Rangoon to feast on. And tacos that transcend reality. The Ahi Tuna tacos we're indescribably sumptuous. There was not one offering that wasn't just delicious. To top it off, the waiter brought over their Churros for dessert. A little bit of Spanish churro infusion, a little bit of New Orleans beignets, a little bit of Mexican spices. Yum. We stopped into Trail Break while traveling through the state. Our party was 4 adults and 2 toddlers. We found the place to be busy, but the hostess was quick to get us seated.
