Complete perfection in a meal, where everything from drinks to appetizer, entree, and dessert is rare, but last night at the Iron Rose they came really close. To start Abigail, our waitress, was attentive, helpful, super sweet and just about the best waitress I have ever had. My wife and I ordered a round of cocktails, expecting the usual great description with subsequent lack luster drinks. Last night was different, midnight bloom which is their take on an old fashioned, but really in a different league; Smooth complex, and satisfying. My wife got the Ruby Ruby which is sort of a pomegranate martini with champagne. Refreshing and vibrant. For appetizers we had the blue crab fritters and the pork belly. The fritters were crispy, light, and full of crab flavor. Virtually no filler. I could have eaten a hundred. The pork belly was crispy, and rich without being too heavy. They also serve it in a white sauce that I was still thinking about the next day. For entrees we got the Roasted grouper and the pork shank. The grouper was maybe a bit overcooked and dry, but the accompanying butter beans stole the show. The were rich, and layered with flavor. I will never see the simple butter bean in the same way ever again. The pork was fall off the bone tender without being dry. The sauce it was served in was a masterpiece. There were hints of apple, berry, cinnamon, and many other notes, I would drink it by the glass if it was available. We split the gelato for dessert. Pure delight. Smooth, bursting with flavor, and leaving you wanting for more. All in all, except for a small misstep with the cook on the grouper a near perfect dinner. I would go there soon because a Michelin star can not be far off, and then getting a table will be a near impossibility. read more

We stayed at Mills House where Iron Rose is located, yet we never got a chance to dine there since we ventured out daily throughout our stay. However, we did pop in every evening for happy hour and/or a nightcap. The place STAYS busy so that says a lot. Jackpot! We had just visited the Gibbs Museum's Rembrandt exhibit, and were walking to find a spot for a drink and a snack. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We happened upon the Iron Horse's cloistered patio. I was thirsty and a little famished from trekking around Charleston all day, but had a while before my dinner reservation . . . so I stopped off at Iron Rose, which is housed in the Hilton Curio collection hotel, Mills House. The spot is open, light, airy. I came between lunch and dinner and sidled up to the bar. My server was Reilly for most of the evening and she was fast, warm, and personable. For food I had the pimento cheese, served with super savory applewood bacon and breadsticks as well as the charcuterie board. The pimento/bacon concoction was amazing, but would have been better served with some type of crusty toast rather than breadsticks and crackers. The charcuterie board was standard, but the meat and cheese were quality. I had the Soul Mate, which was made with mezcal, elderflower, rosewater, and hibiscus. Very refreshing and flavorful, a great flavor profile. My favorite drink of the night. I also had the Royale rose (reposado, pamplemousse, lime, agave), which was also light and easy to drink, but not as tasty as the Soul Mate. I finished with the sweet brier (rye whiskey, grapefruit, honey syrup, ginger beer), which wasn't bad, but unimpressive. They have the option for bar seating, including the high tops and the fire pit, or a table which requires a reservation. This is a very nice but casual restaurant located in the Mills House Hotel. It was a short walk from our fantastic B&B and we were lucky to get a reservation with only a couple days notice for a Saturday night at 7:30. We were seated in the main dining room at a nice table by the window. The place was very busy and VERY noisy. There were a few larger groups who were excessively loud - which made it hard to hear each other talking across our table. Otherwise, the ambiance and vibe of the place is great. The courtyard, with fountain and fireplace, is fantastic for drinks! We had the Pork Belly and Crab Fritters for appetizers. Pork belly was good but the crab fritters were amazing. For entrees we had fish. I had the Red Snapper, which was the market catch of the day, and she had the grouper. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious. Dessert was the Banana Pudding Tiramisu. I ordered the avocado toast and there was an option to add mushrooms for an extra $4. I thought that sounded nice to have mushrooms on my toast. When the food came out, I was disappointed to find the mushrooms were on the side and not on the avocado toast like I thought it would be. The mushrooms did not taste seasoned. The crab cake was so small and flat that I couldn't even see it under the egg. I asked for medium rare on my filet, and it was VERY rare. Like cold center rare. It took 20 minutes for the waitress to bring water and take our drink order. She made it a point to say she's so busy when she got to our table but it really wasn't that crowded.
