If you ever make the trip to Page, AZ for a tour of the Antelope Canyons, a visit out to Horseshoe Bend or just passing through on your way to Zion or Monument Valley, I cannot stress how important it is to stop by Big John's for some amazing BBQ. I'm talking falling-off-the-bone good. We were in town for a couple days and made sure to stop by for a 2nd visit before we headed back to CA. Each time getting their traditional pulled-pork sandwich, some cornbread and an ice-cold beer. Being from the south, I'm picky when it comes to BBQ but I can happily give this place 5-stars bc it met and exceeded my standards. The location used to be an old gas station which has been renovated to a restaraunt but still keeping the same outdoor look. In fact, you can sit down outside under the cover of the awning that once gave refuge to weary travelers who filled their gas tanks in the rain. We had to stop here because the smells coming from the place were amazing! We elected to get take out because they said the wait time was 45 minutes to an hour for a table. However, we saw a lot of people leave but no one was really being seated or the tables cleared so they could be seated so it might have been just slow service. We got ribs, a pulled pork salad, and brisket nachos. Everything tasted pretty good. The best was the pulled pork salad...it was mostly pulled pork with a side of salad. To our horror Big John's was not open yet, what to do for an hour??? Well we decided to drive to to the bend and take a look. My husband could not stop talking about going back and so we did. Now I've had Texas BBQ in Texas (thanks cuz!), and don't mess with Texas and their BBQ, and if you are claiming to be TX BBQ, well, you better deliver. Big John's, you deliver! We ordered some basics, Coleslaw, Corn-on-the-Cob, Baby Back Ribs. Normal fair when lookin' to get your BBQ on. The Ribs were so tender and moist, slathered in a delicious sauce that was literally finger lickin' good. The corn was done to perfection where the kernels were bursting with juicy corn goodness. As for the Coleslaw, neither of us really like coleslaw, but went with the servers recommendation, and I'm sorry to say that I was not disappointed by it. The aroma and live music brought us in, but am definitely not certain that we would return. Food had good taste but a bit dry, in particular the ribs. Wait times were crazy and service less than impressive. Our buddies ordered a salad from the time that they sat down, and that was a 30+ minute wait. The next 20 minute or so wait for the food is I guess acceptable, but no service to stop and ask about drink refills or any other needs during our meal. We understand that it's a busy place, but a quick 10 seconds to check on guest as you pass should not be overlooked. We flagged down the server to request our bill, and that once again was about a 15 minute wait. Once arriving, the bill had not been split for the two parties (4 people total) and so we requested it be split. The second time arriving, we noticed that the charges per item number were not the ones listed in their menu, the difference was a dollar in excess; this was for a couple items on our bill as well as our buddies' bill. Pet friendly and they have these special bones for dogs that have been cooked soft. So no sharp shards when they break them. The seating was outside because it was a beautiful day. There were rolls of paper towels and a sink to wash. The standard soda for drinks. The ribs were excellent. The sides of beans and slaw was excellent. Walking into this place at first may seem underwhelming..the basic table & chairs, the different colored tiles, paper plates and plastic utensils...but the food is ON POINT ! We came around 530pm on a Thursday and were seated right away. Fast service, food came out quick. They smoke their BBQ overnight outside and you can taste it in their food. The meat is so tender and juicy. It has that smokey flavor and falls right off the bone ! We ended up ordering 1 order of their peach cobbler....then ordered a second one !!! Seriously best peach cobbler I've ever had. We enjoyed our second slice outside once the band had started playing around 7pm. Come before then if you want to get seats outside because by that time the whole place was packed. It was overall a nice experience and exceeded my expectations. Unexpected legit Texas BBQ in the middle of nowhere. I didn't expect to find Texas BBQ in a small little town. It's really in the middle of nowhere. Hesitant at first to try, but you know the place is legit when there are bbq smokers right outside. I had the spicy hot link with baked beans and potato salad. Add the bbq sauce on the table onto the hot dog. The sides are SO good. Potato salad is LEGIT. The special that night was Corn on a cob. BEST. Bright yellow, juicy, and smothered in butter and bbqed. I review this place as (1) a native Texan, (2) an avid bbq fan, and (3) a resident of Arizona. I've tried multiple highly rated bbq joints in the Phoenix area and have largely been disappointed. Rudy's is good, the others only so so. I went to northern Arizona this weekend with a buddy, and we came across Big John's on Yelp and wanted to try on Friday night. But it was so packed on the outside, we knew we'd never get in the door. So we came back on Saturday. This time we got in and seated right away, but after having to park at the Safeway across the street. It was worth it. I had a half pound of ribs and they literally fell off the bone. It was meat and not mostly fat unlike a lot of places, and came from a large amoker right out front. The sauce (comes in a bottle at the table) was amazing. The menu said they had "fruit cobbler," so I put their true Texas-ness to the test and asked what kind. They offered apple and peach - so that passed the test (what real Texas bbq joint doesn't have peach cobbler for dessert?). It was good, maybe not quite as good as at Rudy's. This is a really tough review for me I never usually do this but I thought it was important as far as the food and people there I thought it was great. There was a situation that I saw with one of the servers name Kelly that bothered me enough to write a review. As we order the food in and talk to the waitress I watched her belittle and put down another server to the point where she was boasting about it to me and my wife enough to make us both feel uncomfortable. I would just like to note that you don't have to put someone down or make them feel bad or bully somebody at work this poor girl was in tears to the point where me and my wife almost feel obligated to say something to the waitress Kelly over her actions . knowing that the young girl did a great job and I think that in the future if you read this Kelly treat your employees with the same respect you'd like to get treated with she was a joy to be around and we and joyed the food there thank you . read more

Great service! We were visiting Page being tourists and stumbled upon this BBQ joint, as I really love BBQ. They were pretty busy and probably a bit understaffed. I think they may be closed some of the season and this was the first day that they were back open, so may not have known what kind of volume to expect. But they still got to us in a reasonable amount of time as we looked over the menus. Our waitress was 5 stars of friendly and made us feel like we were at home. Food came out in a very reasonable amount of time after we ordered. The menu was pretty basic and not a whole lot of variety. They also only had one type of BBQ sauce. With that being said... They had everything that this type of restaurant needs and the one BBQ sauce they had was perfect! I try to eat BBQ as often as I can when I find a place that I think may be the caliber of this place. Therefore, I know what's good when it comes to BBQ and this is a top tier spot. The waitress also said they do make more than one type of sauce regularly. This place exceeded my expectations because I didn't expect to find such great BBQ in such a small town.
