    Mac and cheese

I visited this establishment recently on the recommendation from a good friend. Im all about supporting local businesses in my city so it was plus that it was in Oakland and Black owned so I was like hell yeah let's go.. I decided to try their chicken wings and shrimp combo and it comes with two sides. I choose to run with Mac & Cheese and Red Beans and rice. Usually my goto when visiting a new soul food restaurant. My experience started off great as when I got my food one of the workers blessed me with their Kool Aid free of charge. So that was a win in my book and good service. The total rate of the experience is a 2.8 out of 5. I actually had high hopes for the food as well. The chicken wings were on point. Nice size wings not overly fried and seasoned well. No ranch or sauce needed. I gave the chicken a 4 out of 5. The fried shrimp was ok not the best but definitely not the worst. Nice size shrimps seasoned okay could of used a little more love(more batter on the shrimp and little more seasoning in my opinon). I gave the shrimp a 3 out of 5. Next was the red beans and rice. This side I gave it a 2 out of 5 because the beans could of been a 3 if it had more seasoning it wasn't the business. The last side I tried was their Mac & cheese and in the words of my guy Daym Drop call it Whack N Cheese. Their mac and cheese needed all the love and attention. The dish didn't taste like nothing with no type of flavor which was sad. It wasn't good not after a few bites had to toss it.. Last was the Kool Aid that the young worker blessed me with and I havent had any Kool Aid in long time and by far this was one of the best cups of red Kool Aid I've had in years. Everything was just and some more!!! The Kool aid was a 4 out of 5. Overall experience was good. Service was good & I want to come back to give the food another try as it could of been bad day.

The service here is poor and very slow. The cashier didn't know how to use the register and took about 10 mins to ring me up. I ordered a combo and a side, and I waited over an hour for my food. The food is alright, but the wait is a breaking point for me.

Oakland has gotten a Lot More Soul with Big Mommas Kitchen open now!!! I rolled into Big Mommas and was impressed on how nice the Décor is . There is a lot of Original Artwork that I found out later , a family member of Mommas painted . The Dining Area looks Freshly Remodeled and Spacious . There are 3 LCD TVs for Entertainment . While I was there I met Big Momma which turned out to be Little Momma Big Momma is a Petite lady but she definitely is the Boss. Big Mommas Kitchen is a Family Run Business. Everybody at Big Mommas is Friendly and very Knowledgeable about their Food . Which is Cooked fresh to the Order . Big Mommas Specialty is their Po'boy's . I perused their Menu and Ordered a Shrimp Po Boy ,Turkey Red Beans and Rice and a Lemonade. The Lemonade was very refreshing and came with free refills . I was given a Sample of the Fried Chicken . It was Moist and the Skin had a Great Flavor and taste to it . Not Oily or Greasy . Ill definitely order Fried Chicken on my next visit. My Very Friendly and Cheerful Server brought me my Shrimp Po Boy and my Red Beans and Rice . The Shrimp Po Boy was packed full of flavor and served on a Sesame Hot Dog roll which really worked . Great Idea. The Turkey Red Beans and Rice were very Good . It was Savory and Very Meaty . The Quality is definitely is there at Big Mommas Kitchen . They take Cash and Debit Card . Ten Tables to Dine at.

Food was absolutely delicious they threw in an extra candy yam on top of my meal hats off to the Cook

. I would have given them a three if they would have put paper towels in the microwave when they reheated the fish

got to give them one more try, because my expectations.. were reasonable, but the experience! today!, was disappointing. next time I'll stick with the deal of the day because although I do eat leftover fish, I would have preferred them put paper towels in the microwave so that it doesn't come out as soggy when you reheat it. And givin it was 7:30 at night, so they could have been closing but I'd rather a business give me their best service for 30 minutes, then to give me half of their service for 8 hours. so I'll wait for them to get some rest, I'll try them earlier next time, on a different date. I'm rooting for them... Besides a professional upscale restaurant, it's just a mom and pop restaurant with amateur chefs, that never quit. I want them to have my business but I want to get my money's worth. Fried Fish Plate

Came with my family (my mom had a Groupon). And thank goodness she found them! Anne or Anna was our server and she was everything you want when you go to any restaurant. The food was EXCELLENT! The smothered turkey was the best! The fish and fried chicken were delicious! We were so full by the end of the meal but we still ordered dessert to-go (Peach Cobbler, Red Velvet and Chocolate cake with toffee). I love my mother so much more for introducing us to this place lol And the tribute to the top Oakland figures on the walls creates a sense of community pride! (Just missing Damien Lillard) I will definitely be back !

Bout to try the Mac & chesse for sure make or break type shit!

Let preface this by say I'm picky about my food and what I like. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the collard greens tasted just like my mommas nicely seasoned. The fried okra was aiite nothing phone home about. Red beans and rice was great loved the taste but they could have put more beans got dry at the end. Mac and cheese was screaming!!!! That means delicious. If you want some quality soul food come to big mammas I can only speak for what I've tried so far those things mentioned above

The server/host for the afternoon, Paul, was absolutely great, friendly, and made me feel at home. While I waited for my guest, I ordered the tostones (twice fried green plantains) and the Island Vibes Rum Punch. Tostones came out crisp, hot, and with an aioli dip. Just delicious. Maybe could have used a touch more salt, but still yummy. The aioli was a great addition. My cocktail was also delicious and I could have easily put a few of those away. But... work. When my guest arrived, we ordered a couple of dishes to share: Dominican "Spaghetti" (Udon noodle, confit garlic, pork longaniza, beef salchichon, tomato sazonado) and the El Barrio Picadera (Chicharron de puerco - crispy pork belly, beef salchichon, pork longaniza, lime, pickled red onion, honey mojo, and a side of tostones). Wasn't sure what to expect from the spaghetti but it was slurpingly delicious. The sauce was savory, not sweet, and the pieces of pork sausage and beef were perfect additions. The Picadera was equally great, almost like a tapas plate of assorted meats. The crispy pork belly had lots of tasty fat to add flavor and moisture. Def enough food for two. Alamar isn't a huge space, but it's cozy inside with a see through to the kitchen. Dinner service has outdoor seating available as well. Will most definitely be back to try the more expansive dinner menu.

FIFA 2026 in full swing - Brazil vs. Haiti on the screen- had us and other diners chit chatting during dinner, which made for a comfy, family vibe! The staff are friendly but as the dinner rush began, the service got a little harried and apologies for delays were overheard. We started with the Pica Pollo chicken wings to share. They were perfectly fried with a lovely crunchy crust outside and juicy inside and we ate all of the tasty dip. I enjoyed a Mamajuana while Eric liked his rum punches. I'm a sucker for anything oxtail so I chose the Braised Oxtail de Res and Eric picked (and finished!) his Pernil. Everything was satisfying and flavorful. I ended up taking home some oxtail and moro for another meal. So good! We'll have to return to explore more dishes and drinks on the menu.

I really like how they let you build your seafood experience exactly how you want it, from the type of seafood to the seasoning and spice level. The only thing was I think the spice level could've been kicked up a notch. Our table ordered a mix of oysters, garlic noodles, Cajun fries, shrimp, crawfish, mussels, which came with corn, potatoes, sausage and hard boiled egg! The seafood was fresh and the sauce coated everything nicely without being overwhelmingly salty, and the corn and potatoes soaked up all the seasoning. All for a very reasonable price if you get the combo, which comes in 3 different tiers! The oysters were a standout--fresh, briny & I loved all the different sauces like horse radish and cocktail on the side. I do wish the fries were a bit more crispy and could've gone heavier with the Cajun seasoning, but that's personal preference. The atmosphere is casual, lively, and perfect for big groups. If you're looking for a customizable seafood boil with fresh oysters, fun drinks, and plenty of options to build your ideal meal, Rockin Crawfish is definitely worth a visit

Based on that conversation, I expected fresh live crawfish, which was available Tuesday when I ordered from DoorDash the previous time. After I got home and opened my order this time. it was clear that the crawfish had been frozen. If the restaurant serves frozen crawfish, that's fine, but customers should be given accurate information when they ask directly about the product right? I feel misled because I relied on what I was told when making my purchase. Transparency is important, and I hope the restaurant does a better job communicating with customers about whether their crawfish are live or previously frozen. VERY DISHONEST BUSINESS SMH.

I had the salmon, fried prawns, mac and cheese, and cabbage. Everything we tried was flavorful, fresh, and cooked with care. The standout items were the blackened shrimp and the crab. The butter sauce covering the crab was absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The salmon was cooked exactly the way salmon should be--moist, flaky, and tender. Too many restaurants overcook salmon and dry it out in the center, but Chef Smelly's got it right. The fried prawns paired perfectly with their sweet chili sauce, which was a nice change from the usual tartar sauce. The sides held their own. The mac and cheese was creamy with great texture, and while I won't call it the best I've ever had, it was very good. The cabbage was excellent, but the collard greens were the real surprise. They reminded me of my mother's homemade greens, and that's not a compliment I give lightly. If you're from the South, you know how hard it is to find greens that taste like they came from someone's family kitchen. The service was attentive, friendly, and hospitable throughout the meal. More importantly, the food was consistently good from start to finish. Bottom line: Chef Smelly's is worth the visit. The bar is substantial if you are alone and just hanging out. We had a party of 7 people last week - celebrating the sale of my sister's Oakland condo - and had to reconfigure our seating for the friend who came last minute, which was done cheerfully. The set up of Calabash allows for large groups easily. We came early (5:30pm) so we had the place to ourselves for the first half hour. Their specialty cocktails are very nice. Unfortunately the wine selection is limited (I think they'd run out of some and hadn't restocked) but we were happy with the cocktails, which include non-alcoholic options. For Vegans, there are a few great items: there's a roasted brussel sprouts & cauliflower combo that is delicious (might be a little spicy for some, but not for me!); plantain; rice & peas. And for non-meat eaters, the salmon dish and the shrimp dish (an appetizer) are both excellent. I can already tell that Calabash will be my go-to spot in Oakland. I live in San Francisco, which has no authentic Caribbean dining spot, unless you count Meski (Warriors' Draymon Green's new spot), which technically is "Ethiopian-Dominican fusion". Also the price point of Calabash is much more budget-friendly than Meski. One final note is that it is black-owned, so if you care about supporting our community of Black-owned businesses, this is a no-brainer. I'm just sayin'...

Their drinks are really good and they don't skimp on the liquor when I usually order cocktails with liquor it in it, so if that's what you're going for, you won't be disappointed. I ordered the oxtail entree with rice and plantains. My oxtail was cooked perfectly like it usually is. Can never go wrong with ordering this dish. It's my go to when I come here, though I've had other dishes here, it's my favorite. They didn't have the scotch bonnet pepper hot sauce which goes really well with it. If you know, you know! I opted to try the crystal hot sauce just so I had something. It was better than nothing. The oxtail is already good without it, but I love the extra kick!
