This place is certainly a staple in oakland. They've been consistent with their food for as long as I've been going and there service is friendly. There aren't many places you can get catfish and man is it worth it!! Not only the catfish but the snapper and prawns are amazing as well. Love the portions. The other day my job had me in downtown Oakland, and I decided to try the fried catfish at this small restaurant. I ordered the Catfish Combo w/ a salad instead of fries. Also, an order of onion rings. The person who took my order was nice and polite. I finally get my food after a short wait. Okay, the fried catfish was good. It was fresh, moist and the meat was flaky. However, the tartar sauce wasn't tartar sauce. It was some sort of salad dressing, maybe ranch dressing? I paid for extra tartar sauce, and both containers were some sort of salad dressing. Now, the onion rings. I like my onion rings battered and deep fried. These rings were limp, soggy, and breaded. They appeared either baked or microwaved. Not crispy at all. This place would of received 4-stars if I didn't order the onion rings. Would I return? No thanks read more

FISH N CHIPS - we discovered that this is better than our other spot . They have some really fresh snapper and prawns in a very tasty batter and it just as close to our home. This was our third time coming here in past three weeks and they are kinda pricey compared to Off the Hook but the quality is way better. We got the 3 way combo double snapper and prawns with fries. This time it was a little bit drier but was still worth it ! Fries are not the best but still okay! Small location with off street parking . I always order the exact same thing - catfish and fries. Last night was no different after passing up those long lines in front of the food trucks on Telegraph during First Friday. Fish - plenty of flavor and I don't even need hot sauce. I always ask for extra tartar sauce. The fish is good without it, but the tartar sauce is so damn good. Fries - well, fries are fries. I expected less, but was hoping for more from this establishment. Our meal was awful. This is so FAR from Louisiana-style or Cajun style fried fish that it's a shame. The breading is a low-end basic commercial brand that's pretty much tasteless - more flour based- without any hint of cornmeal. The fish is fried soft, placed in a paper tray that's placed inside of a brown paper bag -that is then placed in a plastic bag for carry out. Within 5 minutes your fried fish order is greasy, sweating and terribly limp and soft. I even requested frying the fish and prawns extra-crispy -and add additional seasoning, but the request was not followed. AND, no, they do NOT serve Tartar Sauce, it is some sort of sweet creamy sauce. BUSINESS OWNERS: You just can't put seafood in your supply chain, lightly bread and season it, fry it, serve it and call it Louisiana fried fish. You should't advertise as *fish & chips* either. YOU CANNOT and YOU SHOULD NOT. Although prices were very reasonable -for the amount of food received, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. My go-to cafe in Berkeley was closed yesterday, and I will continue to patronize that establishment because THEY KNOW HOW TO SEASON and FRY FISH. Louisiana Fish & Chips is a tiny food joint with limited seating. At most, it probably sits about 8 people. I noticed about 4 tables and several chairs. Menu board is located above head and mounted on wall behind the cash register/counter. Refrigerator has bottled cold beverages. Kitchen area is in rear of business. Specialties: seafood (catfish, salmon, tilapia, prawns, oysters), wings, tacos, burritos, gumbo. The catfish dinner and the two sides were okay. Although there were plenty pieces of catfish and it was moist, I found it lacking in flavor. Red potatoes used in preparation of potato salad is better than russet potatoes. I was not impressed with the potato salad. The texture was not the same as a creamy potato salad that I am used to. I had better elsewhere, as in a red food truck that is parked over near Snow Park on certain Wednesdays. Return visit? Might and then might not. I come here from time to time as they are a consistently solid place to satisfy your fried fish and chip cravings and they are open pretty late. They also get points for having a nice variety of fish to choose from (catfish, snapper, sole, tilapia) as well as offering prawns and oysters. They seafood is seasoned well, fried perfectly on the outside and moist and tender on the inside! The staff is super friendly and very helpful which I love :) Theres just a couple things that makes me give them 4 out of 5 stars: Fries-Always soggy. Its nothing heating them in the oven can't fix but if you're grabbing food to eat at a picnic in the park etc, the fries will be a disappointment. Macaroni Salad-Always watery. I keep trying to get it thinking it will be better one day and it never is. I am not sure if they make it in house or get a big container of it and repackage it but its gross. The mayonaise is really watery and it has an overwhelming taste of peppers and other than that its pretty bland and flavorless. read more

This place is an Oakland classic. The wings are to die for, literally. And the new chicken bites, my god! My husband and I love this place. The fries and onion rings are to die for alone. The service is fine, the place is reasonably clean, the fish was delicious, light, and not greasy, and the prices are reasonable. My only complaint -- hence the 4 stars rather than 5 -- is that they would not provide us with water. I now understand (having researched it) that it is not actually a legal requirement in California that restaurants provide free tap water, and I realize that during the drought many restaurants would not provide provide it unless a customer requested it. (The drought in California is now officially over.) But I've never before eaten in a sit-down restaurant anywhere in the world (including the deserts of the Middle East) where you could not get water unless you paid for bottled water, which we had to do in this instance. read more

So for years I've driven past this spot not really noticing it until my Husband mentioned it was spot he and his grandmother went to and it as good. I was like it's gosh joint over there. I always went to off the hook who had really decent fish. So I made them my go to spot. Well I'm sorry I have a new place to get my gosh from let me tell y the flavors are just right.
