Omg I stopped in we seen they are under New owner ship The place was clean, smelled sanitized and fresh everyone had on masks they where changing gloves often. I ordered some wings with the Yodi Sauce and fries my family ordered other flavors and boy where they good fried perfect. We went back the next day and got their Red snapper, catfish nuggets and a red snapper Po Boy with greens mac n cheese potato salad and their desserts are to die for. It was my first time here and I was not disappointed. The fish Po'boy was so good; the fish just melted in my mouth. I loved the way all the flavors complimented each other! We were first attended by a young lady who seemed decent. 20 minutes later, still no food or coffee and a man that worked at the front asked us to repeat the order. Two other customers that arrived after us, got their orders before us and were given friendly updates and apologies from the same woman. 35 minutes later, we ask the man about our food and he seemed annoyed that we asked, with no apology, and tells us that our food was "almost done." 50 minutes later, the same man approaches us and tells us that they did not have anymore leg and thigh chicken pieces and that if it was ok if they cooked fried chicken wings instead!!!! WTF, How long does it take to cook chicken and waffles??? I expressed my frustrations and walked out! His excuse was that there were MANY other customers ahead of us..the place was EMPTY with one other customer dining and serviced two to-go orders in the beginning. The kitchen is visible, and no joke, there were 4 people working in that kitchen !! Why did we wait so long to leave?? Because it is hard to find HALAL soul food. In terms of service, there was nothing halal/islamic about the service or ambiance. There is really no point in falsely claiming halal on your menu when you treat your non African American customers like garbage. And FYI, Halal goes far beyond how meat/poutlry is slaughtered. I don't normally write middling or negative reviews, but this place needs some constructive feedback if they want to make it. Came in for dinner on Saturday, 1/16. Strike 1 Swing and a miss: It took us 30-40 minutes before we could order. Waitress said they were understaffed that night, so this wouldn't be a deal breaker if the other aspects were good. Strike 2: Many menu items were sold out, and it was just the start of dinner service. This is a huge problem because it means that the staff doesn't care or isn't even aware about their their volume sellers and inventory. Again, forgivable except for one big thing: Strike 2.5 Foul ball: The waitress waited for us to make our selections before telling us they were out. Later when the meal plate came out sans cornbread, we had to ask before she would tell us they're out. We saw this unfolding at other tables as well. This is a huge customer service blunder. She should have been upfront about what they didn't have. That would have been disappointing but people would understand. Instead, she let expectation and excitement build, before letting us down. Strike 3 Went down swinging: Then came the food. I'm sorry, but 4.5 Yelp stars? "Best Southern food in the bay?" The reviews must be overrun with friends and family. How could Southern food be so bland? - Shrimp po'boy: The shrimp was fried decently with a light and crispy cornmeal crust. But the rest of the sandwich with "the works" tasted like cafeteria food, with big chunks of lettuce and slice of American cheese haphazardly thrown into a tiny bun. - Fried chicken platter: It looked like it wasn't even battered or seasoned before they dropped it in a deep fryer. No flavor to it whatsoever. My wife did not even finish the 2 pieces she got. Big Momma's Kitchen needs some major help in all aspects of their business. I hope they take some of this criticism to heart, because it's destined to shutter if nothing changes. I for one will not be coming back. read more

What a disappointing experience! I had not heard about Big Momma's until seeing the Chef on one of the local ballot measure commercials for the upcoming election. In an effort to support local business, I visited Big Momma's last week with friends. Pros: Friendly server although seemed unorganized and overwhelmed. Cons: Never received the third item of my 3-item combo despite ask the server twice; Never received my cornbread or greens (Yes, I reminded the server three times). Lastly, the server made excuses non-stop: "We are understaffed", "we only have two fryers", "oh, I keep forgetting". "Sorry, we are out of Gumbo today". Also, Big Momma's only offers fried chicken strips not a full chicken. I will take my business back to Nellies who are consistently terrific. read more

However, we had fried fish and shrimp, both were quite good--fresh, not overcooked, properly fried fish (i.e., using cornmeal); and a shrimp Po'boy that was also quite good. Cajun fries with the sandwich were tasty (just be aware that they are 'steak fries', not skinny french fries), and red beans & rice plus collard greens with the fish, also all good. I really enjoyed this new spot. I went in with a large party for a family dinner with about 15 people. Even though the restaurant is small, they accommodated us really well. The customer service was really good, especially considering we had so many people. The food was the best part though, literally everything I had was good. There is a huge difference in the portion sizes based on what they used to serve...maybe as a new business they realized they need to cut back a bit; but the difference is so great it makes you question why you're paying that much for a dish.
