It's a Togo spot so nothing about the ambiance is a wow, standing room only. The staff was cool but not friendly, like give me your order and move on. The food was so mid I was annoyed. I will say that their fries were seasoned well. I ate those over the fish. I had catfish and prawns the fish wasn't cat maybe basa. It was flavorless to me. This isn't a spot I would go to again. I ordered here through Uber Eats and I was utterly disappointed. I ordered the 3 fish, 6 prawns plate with potato salad for my side, as well as an extra side of coleslaw. What I got was the fish and prawns on a heap of french fries and no potato salad. The fries were cold and gross. The fish was super greasy and also almost cold. The prawns were ok, but I would not want to order them again. The coleslaw was mushy, tasteless and didn't appear to be fresh or even made today. I took a fork of it and spit it out. I didn't feel like it was even safe to eat. This restaurant was an utter disappointment. So dry the fish itself dried up to a little strip within the overly crisp batter. It also carried that old fish smell. Like either they've been using the same oil for a minute or the fish is just been thawed for a min. They provide a side and a corn muffin with the meal. The muffin was dry and processed. I chose the greens as a side and they were o-k. Quite honestly the greens were the best part of the meal. I also come from a long line of Black soul food cooks so standards are high. It seems like this place is trying to cook soul food but it's missing the soul. Once again the guys at this place are super cool and just on that I've given 2 stars. I'm thinking that the fish was probably Swai (often used as Catfish). The fries and prawns were fine, but I think I'm going to steer clear of the Swai (I mean catfish) ... moving forward! ... and it's a shame because I had made my first sweet potato pie (which was on point), and wanted that Friday night soul food fish (prawns), fries, and slaw combo experience ... to go with my pie and vanilla ice cream. This is definitely not a fancy place, but you will get full! It never disappoints. Then again, I never have gotten the snapper, which seems to be the point of contention amongst reviews. I stick to my shrimp, fish, and oysters. The portions are generous and I simply love their cornmeal coating. Makes the Southern part of me flutter. Fish King is a neighborhood staple. I've been coming here for years. I would love to give them a five star review but a four star review is most accurate, overall. They hit way more than they miss. Sometimes it taste like the grease wasn't changed or they may fry your food too hard but not enough to leave a bad review or to never go back. The portions used to be more than the menu specified. They used to always throw in a extra piece or two. Now they're portions are exact and I think they cut their fish pieces to make them stretch. I can't say that I blame them because inflation is real. Even with that being the case you still get your money's worth. Make no mistake about it, when they hit THEY HIT! They have this frying thing down to a science. I love a good crunch and they give it to me every time. You will always see the same faces when you visit them. Always cool, friendly and accommodating. The location is convenient if you have to do laundry or buy hair supplies because they're in the same lot as a laundromat and a beauty supply store. Parking can get tight inside the parking lot but there's plenty of street parking as well. The inside is small. Not really ideal for indoor dining but there are some chairs and a table or two. An East Oakland classic , they've been open for quite some time now. It's off international in a really tight parking lot shared with little caesars and a beauty supply store . So I'd recommend calling your order in due to tight parking . The store front itself is small but enough room for a few tables if you'd like to actually sit down and eat . Real basic set up . The food itself I've never had a problem with. My favorite thing to order is the 4 Way Combo . You get 4 shrimp fish and chicken , fries and a drink for 20$! It's a great deal and feeds 2 people ! They cook it as soon as you order so it has a little wait time BUT guaranteed hot and steamy ... seasoned well and melts in your mouth :) Until further notice lol , I will keep coming here .
