This time my chicken was undercooked by besides that it's a lovely establishment/ The sweet tea tasted really old, yet the prickly pear lemonade hit different was very good but sour ofc. Although it felt out of place, the service was great and the food was immediate. After parking, there was no wait, there was no line, and I got my food immediately after ordering. I did like how grabbing bread and the pickle bar is literally open, and the variety of sauces was a very nice touch. Unfortunately as delicious as the food was, I did feel it's a little salty, almost requiring the bread. While traveling through the area stopped in at Big Nate's Family BBQ. Hubby loves brisket so had to give that a try. Brisket was delicious with excellent bark & seasoning. I tried the pasta & potato salad, both were tasty but not something I would personally eat a lot of. They have decent flavor but get overwhelming after a few bites. We have enjoyed Big Nate's Family BBQ on several occasions, but only at the Banning location, so we were excited to try the new location on Main St. They are known for authentic 12-hour slow-roasted and smoked Texas-style barbecue beef brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, chicken quarters, and loaded mashed potatoes, and my favorite, "Nacho Mama's Mac." They have a variety of house-made sauces, including their "Lost Dutchman's Gold" and "Arizona Sweet Heat." My wife tried the 1/4 chicken plate with slaw and baked beans, and I had to try the Trinity plate: pulled pork, chicken, and brisket with Nacho Mama's Mac and the loaded mashed potatoes. Everything was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and you could really taste the smoky flavors. They offer family packs and homemade desserts and cookies. The new location has more interior seating with tables and some booths, and they have a nice patio as well. So if you like Texas barbecue, do yourself a favor and give them a try. read more

​Who knew East Valley and Mesa had such good BBQ!? I couldn't help but stop by after driving past the big sign outside several times. Tasty brisket with some delectable sides - Nate's is worth a visit. I ordered the brisket plate with the mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. The brisket was certainly high caliber and was seasoned well enough to eat by itself. There was a whole selection of sauces to choose from, each one offering something special. What surprised me the most was how good the mashed potatoes were. They were so good that I had to go back up and let the folks at the counter know. They were really savory and smooth, and whatever seasonings they added made them taste so decadent. It wasn't very busy when I came by, and I received a friendly greeting. The cashier talked me through some of the options available. They offer your typical side dishes. I do wish there was one more vegetable option, but that's a personal preference. There is a pickle bar, which I thought was a nice touch. Overall, I'm very happy with my visit to Big Nate's. Brisket was juicy and tender with amazing flavor, fat that melts in your mouth! I tried 4 sauces: original sweet and tangy, sweet brown sugar flavor, lost Dutchman gold mustard based and Arizona sweet heat prickly pear and jalapeño. My favorite Arizona sweet heat! Got the big Nates plate, pulled pork sandwich, and sasauge. Well, I was disappointed for what I got. Brisket was on the dry end. Flaky fall apart but I prefer little more tender and moist. Flavoring it was not bad but for me some reason it was on the salty side. Pork ribs I did not like, it had some weird after taste and tasted like it sad around unwrapped for a while. Drumstick was not bad, pulled pork was OK. They have pretty good selections of BBQ sauce. They weren't bad and spicy weren't that spicy. Sasauge had good flavor and weren't too bad. I asked the girl working the counter if it was true and she said the company uses their tips to purchase things for the company - as if that use of the money justifies wage theft. Maybe the company just isn't familiar with Tip Regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act. This location is in a strip mall and I was concerned because as I arrived, I did not smell bbq even though I arrived at 6pm. The place is tastefully decorated and the server was friendly, patient and helpful. To summarize the taste of this bbq is Peppercorn. I personally found it too much. The texture and meat flavor was good and it was smoked well. But as I tried the mashed potatoes, they were of a poor consistency, gluey and too peppery. The macaroni cheese was way overcooked. The sweet tea was great and many of the bbq sauces were good. A few flavors could have used less celery seed/salt. I feel bad for barbecue places because most will be compared to either little Miss barbecue or Caldwell County in the east Valley which serve top notch Texas bbq. mostly, It's a matter of palate and flavor opinion, but the sides need some help. We stopped by randomly for lunch while out and about. There were 4 of us all getting different items. The guys at the counter were friendly and quick getting the orders together. Everything we had was excellent. Pulled pork was flavorful and tender, brisket and chicken both excellent. Sides were also on point, I hold a lot of my BBQ review for the sides. Went in for dinner around 7 pm last night. Ordered the brisket plate with macaroni and cheese and the green chille corn bread. The brisket was dry, but tasted pretty good. The macaroni and cheese was a pile of mush. It had been sitting in the warming tray for far too long. The corn bread was room temperature and also very dry. I tried all the bbq sauces. I couldn't tell much difference between the house and the sweet. I didn't care for either. Tasted too much like doctored up kechup. My favorite was the gold. With the price of BBQ these days, I just cannot risk going back again, just to be disappointed. The dining area was dirty but all the chairs were up on the tables and it was in the process of being cleaned an hour prior to close. For BBQ in the east valley, Rudy's, Tom's, and Jalapeno Bucks are my go to places for casual dining. Big Nate's falls short. read more

Did you know the name NATE is actually an acronym for the founding pit masters and their beautiful wives? N (Newell Ray), A (Anna), T (Tyra) and E (Eric). Anna and Newell Ray are siblings and thus, they're a family! This place is cute and I'm not just talking about the decor. This is their second location and to celebrate their grand opening, they were giving out free pulled pork sandwich. On top of that, it the same day as their first location's third birthday. That same day of October 12th is National Pulled Pork Day. If you know me, I love a good theme and these four amazing people did it oh so well! And honestly, it's one of the best bbq I've had in a long while. I ordered The Big Papa and it is a massive plate of food! I really just wanted to try a little bit of everything and had I brought my gal pals along, I think I would need at least three other girlfriends to attack this plate. If you're new here, you can't pass on the brisket. You can see the gorgeous pink smoke ring and that crust? Holy cow! One of the pit masters, Eric, had told us that they smoke their meat for about 12-14 hours and let it rest for the same amount of time so it can retain its moisture. And boy was that pink slab juicy. Also to be enjoyed was the jalapeño cheddar sausage (pro-tip: try it with their mustard). I don't know how but the smoked turkey and chicken were so soft and juicy as well. As for sides, I can't get into everything because this review is getting wordy. I haven't been this excited to type something up in the longest time so here are the highlights: Get the pasta salad, the cornbread (+ honey and butter because you would be crazy not to), the mac and cheese will make your skirt flip, and the loaded potatoes will have even Pioneer Woman gasping at the butter usage. I LOVE IT ALL! Oh, and know that they also make their pickles and sauces in-house too. Honestly good food by the most welcoming people in state. February 22, 2025 Horrible experience at Big Nate's bbq in Gilbert. Upon entering and ordering the male cashier was uninformed as to how some of the food was prepared. When we got our food, both meals were in only one cardboard box. We told the person that served it that when we ordered the food it was to eat there. So he brought us two metal trays and sat them down on the table. The meat was not even warm. They forgot to give us an additional item that we ordered and payed for. The "eating space" was dirty. There were handmade signs telling you how to throw out your own food and how put your metal trays away. Just an all around unpleasant experience. We really wanted to like it.
