This review is for the Big O Tires at 2201 Washington Ave in San Leandr., near Old San Leandro -- not the other Big O location farther south on Washington Ave. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My husband brought our vehicle in for service, and while the staff was relatively nice, they were not very helpful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I can see how some of the other reviews mentioning staff attitudes may be accurate based on several visits to this shop, though that was not the main issue during this most recent visit. The larger issue was the service itself. With an appointment, it still took about **three hours** for an oil change, tire rotation, balancing, and related basic service. We also paid to have the coolant system checked/pressure-tested because there was a leak, but they did not find it. My husband later found the leak himself within about five minutes, which was frustrating and made us question how thorough the inspection was. There are also concerns about the oil change. I cannot say for certain, so I will not state it as fact, but the oil filter looked questionable afterward, with fresh oil drips and an overall appearance that made us wonder whether it had actually been replaced. At this point, this has become a safety concern for us, and that is a deal breaker, and thus overpriced/not a good value. Well, today was my last visit and I counted on them taking care of my car. They've lost my business. I used to use Mario and Brad but since the business was sold, it's gone to hell in a handbag. I stopped by today to find out why my engine light came on after they had done a major service on my car 4 months prior and they wanted to charge me $100 just to plug in the scanner to tell me what is wrong. Avoid this place. They installed a faulty new tire. They didn't tighten the lug nuts properly. They didn't balance the wheels properly. So basically, they failed on the three basic tasks you expect from a tire shop. The day after buying a set of new tires here, one tire was completely flat. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I went back to the store, they were jerks about it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They figured out it was a faulty valve on the new tire they had just installed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They acted like they did me a big favor in replacing the valve. Not even a whiff of apology for selling me a defective tire, and making me have to come back and deal with this.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Two days later, when I heard a metal rattling noise coming from the car, I discovered that one of the lug nuts was completely loose and rattling around inside the hub cap. They hadn't even tightened the lug nuts. Further, the ride on these brand new tires was pretty rough, even on smooth freeway pavement. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I complained to Big O's corporate office and got a prompt response from someone who kindly agreed to have another Big O inspect all my tires and reinstall and balance them.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They found that the balancing done was horribly wrong, explaining why it vibrated so much. Turns out that Big O is a franchised business. So each branch is independently owned. This one clearly has quality-control and customer service issues. read more

Our Family has been coming here for 30+ years. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ever since Mario retired, it's just gone downhill. Poor Customer Service, over charging for parts, replacing parts not needed. Not Taking responsibility for their actions.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We took our car in for an oil change, brakes, tires and a brake fluid flush. We paid a lot of $$. We drove it home(half mile). The next day it was being driven to Monterey. It over heated 20 miles into the trip. We had to take two cars to hand one off to our Son so he could make his appointment. We had to have it towed back home. We took it back to Big O and they said it would be $600 to replace a $10 part that was broken by them. They stated that it couldn't be proven that they broke it. REALLY? (See Pics). The hose that was connected to the fitting is in the only path for them to reach down and clean all the brake fluid that was spilled all over the engine. Can't trust them anymore. Went to big o tires for an alignment since I had warranty from big o tires from my last alignment (within 6 month). Told them of the situation and they brought the car in, 10 mins later they called and said they couldn't align my car bc the control arm was bent, possibly this voided my warranty but wasn't sure. So I came back to the shop to pick up my car only to be hit with $120 bill, which they claim it was for putting the car on the lift. Initially they said for inspection, which I didn't ask for. Not only did they not honor the warranty, but they also charged hidden fees. Very shady behavior and terrible business practice. They should have stated the potential cost upfront so customers are aware and has the right to choose whether they'd still like their warranty honored with the associated cost. End of story, not only was I NOT offered an alignment from big o tires, insult to injury: I had to also pay for the ZERO service provided (their quote on quote lift price, to lift my car and tell me they can't do anything). This review is long overdue as I've used this location multiple times over the last year and a half. Brad always takes excellent care of me and my car. I have a very difficult-to-access insurance to cover flat tires (which I get often in East Oakland) and Brad takes the time to get in touch with my insurance and make sure I get coverage. Brad is honest about what services are needed, how much they cost, and how much time everything will take. He also always offers options to reduce cost if needed and gives me guidance on what is absolutely essential to keep my car in safe working order. Brad clearly understands automotive mechanics and can explain things in layman's terms to someone like me that has no experience in this area. For two weeks now my car has been inoperable due to the hassle with my damaged tires trying to shop around and have my car diagnosed for damages. Other shopscharged me $299 to check out my tires then left my car on Acc killing my battery and not taking ownership. I had to pay another $200 for a new battery. Not to mention the outrageous cost estimates given by other shops. I called Big O spoke to Fleur, Mario, and Jesus. Jesus help me today and has been wonderful. My car is still with Big O awaiting completion but I am so relieved with the estimate and the intervention it's been a peace of mind knowing they can reasonably complete the job. The dealership where I normally take my car for service had an issue with one of my wheel locks, which had rusted. They tried drilling it, to no avail other than breaking half of it, and then said they couldn't take the rest of it off. Their proposal was to replace the entire wheel hub and bearing and a quote of $1200+! So I called around and ended up reaching Fleur (who was also indignant at the dealership). Long story short, she and Mario were helpful, friendly and pragmatic about the whole thing. They didn't honor the tire repair warranty. They said the nail was too close to the side wall. Nail was nowhere near the side wall. I bought a new tire. I had been told the exact same thing a few years back at a previous tire store where I had bought a set of tires with the repair warranty. Seems like it's a standard tactic. read more

Great deals on tires. I'm a regular here after shopping around. I went back to replace a tire, after one of the new ones I bought from them got popped my trash kn the freeway. I had the protection plan, so it was covered, and I didn't have to pay for a (new) new tire. However, one of the employees said I'd have to pay for alignment if I wanted it. but since I'd gotten an alignment with the original tires, alignment was actually covered for a year. He hadn't bothered to check before quoting me, so I was glad I asked--it saved me a couple hundred bucks, I think. Both types of warranties have been well worth it for me already. I'm very angry at Big O Tires right now. 11 months ago (8,000 miles driving) I purchased 4 new tires at Big O, for about $1500. On Friday one of my front tires blew out without warning. Took it to a different tire shop, and learned that Big O had reversed new front and rear tires. Front tires have been continuously rubbing and getting worn down from the inside, until one totally wore through. Other front tire was ready to blow out as well (inside looks totally shredded). This place can be hit or miss. Depending on who's servicing you. I really don't trust 'Big O Tire' as a collective, because like most of these car maintenance shops. They like to run game on you. Today, I'd went to get a patch on my tire because it had a nail in the top outer, not to be confused with the side wall. I was told that it's not repairable. I knew better. To make a long story short. I'd went to another tire shop that same day and the tire was repairable like I'd already knew. It only took 5 minutes to repair. If you're not familiar with the guidelines of what is not repairable and what is. There are several videos showing you. The nail wasn't near the wall. It was within the area, on the top repairable. I had a general checkup here a the same time my friend needed to do her general checkup. Not only did mine somehow take two hours longer than hers, all of my personal tire caps missing, and my things in the glove compartment crumpled and boot prints all over my documents, I found something much worse way after. I usually do my own maintenance on my car but I had to let Big O Tires do it for the last two years because I've just been too busy. Now that I have the chance to change the motor oil myself again, I found that they had managed to put a pebble into my engine! I dropped my car off for two new tires. Service was fast, took under two hours, but for some reason they called to let me know I need an alignment. I did not need an alignment when I dropped it off, so it seems weird I'd need one at pick up. I don't know if I'll be back; I usually go to Berkeley and never have had this issue. Came in initially to get an alignment as I had new tie rod ends on. They advised me that my current tires had uneven wear which would make an alignment useless. They gave me a solid deal (expensive but a solid deal) on 4 tires, alignment and threw in brand new lug nuts free of charge as I had a few warped lug nuts. I had a deep puncture on my vehicle over the weekend where it had a massive leak and tire went flat within minutes. It was about that time that we put new tires anyways since we just bought this used vehicle and it came with the original tires. Anyways, I waited until Monday morning to start really looking and typically went to Costco for my tire needs, but that would be a good week or so out and really wanted to get my new tires rather than riding around on my spare. I called several tire companies and most didn't have my size and would need to order, but the phone interaction was less than stellar. Just a bit gruff and abrupt, but whatever, I just needed tires fast! So, I came across Big O Tires' website and based on the data, they had my tires, but they were slightly higher than Costco. However, due to the urgent need of the tires, I decided to give it a go. I am soooooooo glad that I did! Made my appointment on line, but also called them to see if they would happen to have an earlier timeframe and spoke with Mario. He is the main reason why I had such a stellar experience! He informed me that they didn't actually have the tires in like the website indicated as that is a National website but he went above and beyond to find me the tires to have them shipped in for Tuesday install. I was good with that. Mario was professional, friendly and made you feel like you were the only customer he was dealing with. We did hit a snag in which the warehouse was only able to locate 1 of the tires that I wanted, but I needed 4. He suggested a different set which based on my research, I already knew that the warranty wasn't comparable to what I originally wanted. However, he just had this demeanor and I trusted him. As we continued our conversation, I did inform him that it didn't have to be that specific tire, but I needed something that was good, reliable and with a good warranty on it. So, since he said that those other Michelin tires are good and reliable, I was going to go with it, but I also pointed out that I believe that the warranty is only for 20K. He checked and he did confirm that was the case, but stated that he didn't feel comfortable and wanted to look into some tire that is comparable and said he would call me back. True to his word, he called me back and had some excellent news. He found the original tires that I wanted BUT they didn't ship as it was a store in San Jose. Instead, he resolved this issue and said he would drive out to San Jose early the next morning to pick it up. Now, that is Customer Service that I haven't encountered in a long, long time. Tuesday came and sure enough, he called me once the tires were available for install. I did have a small hiccup but nothing that Big O Tires did, but my tire pressure light came on the next day so I brought it back. The technician, I think his name was Daniel, not 100%... he helped me check all of the tires and found that one of the tires had a lower pressure, so to ensure that there wasn't any defect or a slow leak, he did a water test to make sure. All was good and even though they were short handed, he even changed my oil which was initially informed that they wouldn't be able to do right away. Overall, the team here was a delight to deal with and some of the most professional and friendly people I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. I would totally recommend Big O Tires for your tire needs! NOTE - I would recommend that you do not go with the on line appointment system alone, I would encourage you to call to see if you are in a rush so that you can figure out how busy they are and how much time you have to wait. read more
