I was sold four rims during my visit. After installation, the rims rubbed. When I came back to address the issue, I was told there would be a $180 diagnostic fee. The interaction felt rude and unprofessional. Impact: Vehicle not driving correctly due to rubbing; additional inconvenience returning to the shop. Resolution requested: Refund for rims and/or proper fitment without additional fees; professional communication. Summary: Based on this experience, I do not recommend Mel's Tires and will not return. Came in for an alignment, was told it didn't pass and that I needed to replace a bunch of stuff coming to total of nearly $2200. Before coming for an alignment my mechanic checked and replaced what was needed which struck me as odd. Consulted with my brother and he recommended his friend which he checked everything found only a bolt needed to be replaced, did the alignment and passed ! He stated none of the parts mentioned by Mel's tire need to be replaced at all! Definitely wouldn't recommend and always get a second opinion before spending. read more

This review is way overdue!! I met Mel, his wife and their daughter when I used to manage a Starbucks store in San Leandro and they were regular morning customers. When I found out that they own a tire place, I took a note to remember to go to their place if I ever need tires. Few years later in 2017 I needed to replace my tires for the first time. I went there and right off the bat pleasant service, honest and quick. Now fast forward to 2023 I need to replace my tires from 2017 (yup they lasted that long even though I drove a lot to and from Santa Cruz and San Jose during the pandemic). I of course went to Mel's tire again to get new replacement. I missed my first appt but they were happy to reschedule it. And I miss the time again and came in 1 hr later and they still made time to replace my tire in a little over 1hr (yes all 4 tires!). Veronica and Monte are sweet and dynamic team. Mom and Pop shops FTW btw. I was in and out of the at the shop in 30 minutes. I called, a human answered! Checked if they had availability. Veronica said I can come in now and she will check if my spare used tire is good and will mount it for $30. Upon arrival, she took my used tire and quickly got to removing the rim from my flat tire. Monte checked the tread on my other tires and took off the donut and installed the mounted tire. He also made some recommendations on when to replace tire pressure sensors since the batteries themselves aren't serviceable. When putting the donut back in the trunk, he noticed that my trunk latch was loose and volunteered to tighten it. Now, that's service! They have earned my future business. They weren't even open yet and the owner, Veronica greeted me and told me they would take care of me. She called me within an hour and my car was ready. They're great and super friendly. I had tires which were old and i had to constantly put air in them every other day. I spent my sunday looking for replacements but had no luck. Came here on Monday and they were able to get me tires for my car for a great price and done on the same day. Which was also convenient for me because i work a couple of blocks down the street. Not sure if it's because I went during the week but I got a flat and yelped the closest tire place. Thankfully I found Mel's. I was in and out in literally less than 30min. I drive a Honda Accord and the cheapest tire option they had was 85$. I paid 115$ in total. If you want them to take a look further, I'm sure you could ask. But all I wanted was the tire replaced so I could be on my way. The woman at the front (Veronica?) is very nice and handles everything efficiently. Calls kept coming in the whole time I was there so I'm glad they're keeping busy. Her husband that did the replacement (Oscar?) spared no time as well. Over priced the labor just to balance and installing they charged 50. Then called me saying I needed to go to my bank and get cash because their credit card was not working. Veronica and Nestor are very nice and took care of all my tire issues. We couldn't figure out why my tire pressure light was coming on and they offered to help me out in every way possible but eventually we figured out the wrong tire was ordered and/or installed. They ordered a new tire and are replacing now. A little inconvenient with all the run around but I guess I'm a really patient person. When I realized that my tire was leaking, I knew I had to take care of it quick. I called ahead to see if they would be able to service my vehicle later that afternoon and the lady said I could come right away. They patched up my leaky tire in about 10 minutes. It was $25, which I think is well worth it so you don't have to buy a whole new tire. Excellent and friendly service. They check to make sure they can fix your tire before they charge you. FYI make sure you know where your wheel lock is to expedite the process. I highly recommend this place to everyone. Glad I have a go-to tire place if I need it. read more

I started my day with a low tire alert in my car. I had a screw. Go to Big O my coworkers say. I get to Big O around 9:30. The sales guy, nice enough, tells me he'll come have to have my car for a few hours, he says, "Look at my parking lot". Okay, no worries, I get. He ask me if I had the wheel lock? New car for me, wasn't in the glove compartment last I looked, I told him no. He tells me, he can break the lock but might damage my tire. I ask should I go to dealer. He tells me he doesn't know. Trip to the dealership. The service advisor tells me, "Sorry the lock wasn't in there. I'll have to charge you to break the lock and charge you for a new one" ARE YOU KIDDING ME? He also tells me that they probably can't repair my tire so prepare to purchase a new one. He didn't even look at my tire. His coworker steps in when he sees I'm not happy. He goes to my car and checks the trunk... BINGO... not only is my lock thing there but also a brand new set! BLESSED!!! Needless to say, I tell the original advisor, no thank you, I'll take my service elsewhere. I leave with screw still in tire. I'm not going back to Big O. Why didn't he look before he sent me away. Hey, right across the street is MEL's TIRES, let me call them. I pull into MEL's, no cars waiting, the wonderful women at the counter came out looked at the tire, quoted me $25 and a 30 minute wait. I wanted to cry. After the experience with the first two, I was frustrated, but GOD sent me to the place where I should have gone to first. I don't know why everyone is across the street at Big O! Don't go there! Take your business to MEL's. She was honest and didn't try to sell me something that I didn't need. This chick right here will be a customer as long as MEL's is in business! Why Mel's Tire Pro? 1. Honesty - These guys didn't try to sell me the Goodyear Fortera (top of the line) Tires, although I was looking to spend the big bucks on em. They showed me a few much cheaper, but similar quality tires. 2. Personability - Brian (Owner) Still remembers me bringing in my Pathfinder years ago. Ulisses & him are great at establishing rapport with customers, and are also patient..Understanding that Tires are not an easy decision. 3. QUALITY - Tryng to save money (and I didn't save that much) by going to other places (i.e. Costco, America's Tire Co.) left me with less than satisfactory workmanship. Mel's SAVED ME last night. I picked up kid 1 from preschool and was on my way to pick up kid 2 when my tire light came on. Stopped at a gas station and saw my front tire was nearly flat and I could actually hear the air coming out from a leak. It was 4:43, and I called Big O tires, who said: we are about to close, come in tomorrow. There is no way I could wait until tomorrow or handle it in the morning, as we only have one car and two kid drop offs, so I started to panic. I then called Mel's, who I thought was open until 5:30, and they said come right over and they will see if they can help. I got there at about 4:53, and they got RIGHT TO IT. They removed my tired, patched the leak, and put it back on in 10 min. I later found out they close at 5, not 5:30, and they stayed past 5 just to help me out. They said they could hear the panic in my voice. They are my absolute heroes, and for an excellent price. I would highly recommend them. Thank you so much! read more

I recently spent close to $1000 on tires here. I have a 2017 Tesla s and needed 3 tires and an alignment as I had purchased a single tire there several months before as it had a nail. After the 3 tires had been purchased and installed I was told they didn't have the equipment do do an alignment on the Tesla. I was called later by the owner's husband who knew they didn't have the equipment and said his wife should have told me ahead of time before I spent the 1 k for the 3 tires. The point is tell the customer ahead of time if you can't provide the service. I would have been a lot more forgiving if it had been a clerk who didn't know any better, but it was the owner and she knew her equipment wouldn't work. They wanted my 1 k and didn't want me to go elsewhere where I could get both the tires and an alignment at the same time. Buyer beware. read more

So I get a flat and the first thing I do is use yelp on my android to find the nearest and highest rated tire-spot. I found Mel's and when I called, the man on the phone was very helpful and informative. When I arrived he explained everything to me and I left with a brand new tire. A week and a half later I get ANOTHER flat.. a different tire this time, so I just went back to Mel's- they took good care of me before so I kinda trusted them. Sadly the nice man wasn't there this time. This time an attendant named ULYSSES helped me. He looked at the tire and told me it was a nail that caused the flat but he couldn't patch it since I drove it all of 4 blocks to go there- according to him driving it made the tire UNSERVICEABLE. I guess ol' Ulysses felt for me that day tho because he found a coupon for $20 off a new tire. I bought it and had it put on. Being that this is the second tire I have bought from them in less than 2 weeks, Ulysses came to me and said "since you have 2 new and 2 old tires, I will be happy to rotate them and put all the new ones in the back. I gratefully obliged. When I left that night I was somewhat disappointed that the previous mechanic wasn't there but I shrugged it off because, hey, I got a free rotation and $20 bucks off a new tire! THEN... ANOTHER FLAT- a rear one, meaning that it was a new one Ulysses put in. I gave him a call and he told me to come down and he would replace it for me since it was still under warranty. I get there and this m.effer tries to say "oh this isn't the tire WE put on, it's YOUR old one, so it's not warrantied after all" I ask him "didn't you put the new ones in the back for me, and the old ones in the front?" His response: " Oh um it got really late that night so we didn't end up doing it after all.. " This is where I go batty.. I tell him " When I left here that night, you told me you put the new ones in the back, you told me this as I was leaving, So its either you LIED to me then or you're LYING to me now!!" He responds back with "Well it's not ours so... *shrug*.." I told him straight up after his little wimpy attempt at passing the buck. I said "I REFUSE to pay for another tire especially after you have lied about work you've done!! I will not leave here until I speak with a supervisor or until you honor what you've promised!!" After making quite the hulabaloo he finally patched my tire (at no charge) and I left. I didn't get a new tire BUT I don't think I will ever return. I understand that there was some construction happening in front of the store and that limited the ability for them to maintain the usual hours and days that they are open. I left repeated messages that went unreturned to schedule buying and replacing my tires. I still haven't received a message back. I needed to replace a tire and eventually the other three. I was shopping for rims one afternoon March 2013 and saw this shop as I was on my way to Big O tires. I figured I check out one of the smaller shops just in case. Boy was I glad I did. I was helped by Ulisses who was able to get me a quote on some American Racing rims which I had already looked at online through a few sites. He was friendly and knowledgeable. I was hoping to find a place locally that could put on some rims sooner than waiting for online delivery. Ulisses checked on the computer for their price and it was slightly higher than what I could get from Tire Rack. I asked any chance to get a better price? He said he could call the maker direct and check for me. He did and he gave a much better price which beat Tire Rack by at least $20 per rim! I asked can they make it in by tmrw and he said yes if I left a deposit by 3:30pm today. I left a deposit and placed my set of rims order. The next day I call and make sure the rims are on the way. Ulisses says he would call the company and return my call. He called me back promptly and said the rims are in the Fed Ex truck and should arrive about 12:30 according to Fed Ex. I say great and arrive around 12:30. The rims haven't arrive yet but I'm in no big rush so I wait. After awhile I ask if Ulisses can call again.. He does and after he asks to find out exactly when the truck will arrive, Fed Ex says the time given was just an estimate... Anyway I wait until about 2:45 and decide to call it a day. Ulisses apologizes for making me wait and said he will call me if they arrive later today. Also he said if they show up, that I can come in before they open and they will service me first. I say ok sounds good. Later that afternoon Ulisses calls me and tells me the rims are finally in! He found out the reason why the rims didn't arrive as usual was that the rims were placed in the truck but WAS NOT scanned. So the driver didn't know to stop at the shop. Apparantly Ulisses placed another call after I left to ask about the rims and fortunately they were able to find out the rims where in the truck and delivered them. The next day I arrive a few minutes past 8am and in about 85 minutes I had my rims on nice and shiny. They even sprayed and wiped my tires and made them shiny. Upon leaving I paid my bill and was pleased to see the shop lowered some of the labor and gave me a sweeter deal! I highly recommend this shop for all your tire and rim needs! Honest people and good work they do here! They would have got 5 stars if not for making me wait but I do understand these things happen. Hey next time I go, I'd be happy to give my 5 stars! Many thanks! Btw as a side note the Big O across the street are not honest! They quote me a decent price over the phone and when I drop by just to make sure, the guy at the counter gives me a $25 per rim higher price! BEWARE! read more

Who wants to buy new tires? NOT ME! ...but when your vehicle is no longer gripping the road and you're nervous to drive to work in the a.m. because it's raining and you're not sure how the vehicle will react to wet roads - it's time to be a 'big kid' and just do it. I YELP'd the heck out of tire places in Oakland, SF, and San Leandro...we had quotes from $700 - $505(ish) for new (no one had used in our size and I didn't want to spend another week looking for various alternative sizes that 'might work' and yet only be maybe $20 cheaper). Mel's came in at $493 out the door for 4 new tires on our mid-size SUV when even Costco was $128 per tire. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because it's in a bit of a rough area, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable going across the street for coffee by myself...but sometimes I can be a wuss. This has no bearing on the shop/service, just something to point out for the ladies. BUT there's a waiting room, so bring your own coffee and you're a-ok! More than price, the customer service was top-notch from the initial phone call for pricing AND unlike a lot of other vehicle-type places, they treated ME with the same respect as they did my hubbs...brownie points for that! We got in at 8:40am on a Saturday, and were out at 9:40am...despite having other customers come in and out during the hour, they were still able to get our tires done in a jiffy; no additional pressure to choose one brand over another, just a very 'here's the best we can do and we'll do it right' attitude. Free flat fixes, free rotation every 6K miles...works for me. Big-O is right across the street...I wonder how many people make the mistake of overlooking the "little guy" (Mel's) for Big-O...their loss! read more
