Stopped in for a hot dog while passing by. Ordered a hot dog without fries and a small fountain drink. The place is clean and roomy. Located right behind Sushi Station on Randall. Their hot dog is your standard Chicago dog. A decent option, but not as good as Portillo's or other Chicago area staples. Nonetheless, it was a decent dog and the bun was wonderfully soft. However, I was a bit taken aback by the prices, which, by the way, are not listed on the menu. Hot dog (no fries) and small fountain drink = $6.78. Yikes! Was staying in a hotel next door for business and this was the closest, decent looking spot for a quick meal. Tried a bunch of stuff- hot dog, Italian beef, chicken tenders, burger, fries, onion rings. Everything was kind of exactly what you'd expect- greasy, filling, and pretty ok. Burger and tenders are definitely frozen. Hot dog was whatever. The Italian beef was HUGE. Meat/gravy didn't have a ton of flavor but the roll was decent and the giardenera was really the highlight for me. Stear clear of this Big Sammys location in Elgin off Bushwood. Ordered a Gyros meal (extra meat) yesterday and asked to have it well done on the spit. Not a sole in the place and 3 employees working. After paying $20.00 I notice the kid in the back shaving Gyros was putting it on the grill and told him I wanted it cooked on the spit. ""You want it on the spit? I said yes please as it has a tendency to mix with other meats cooked. I could tell he was miffed, but they WERE NOT BUSY and the request I felt was reasonable. 5 minutes later my meal was ready. Took it home and guess what...It was greasy and undercooked. Stear clear of this location and maybe Big Sammys. This happens when a business expands too fast. Its such a shame, I really like the food here, but the Front counter guy is so rude. It happens so many times that I finally decided to rate the place. It was friday 8/16/2024, I placed an order and got there 15 minutes later and stood to wait on the front counter. This time he replies yes your order is ready but your not the one Im ringing up. Why didnt he just say that in the first place when I first asked him?? And I wouldnt have to tap my card. Its just so rude when you ignore someones question and then become piss when they assume and tap their card when your ringing someone else up. So he rang me up after and handed me the bag that he was holding that turned out to be really mine to begin with while he looked for someone else to ring up. Its a shame that the food is good here but they match their food up with rude front worker who can barely speak or speak poor english. Came here for the first time today during my lunch break for a quick bite to eat as I was passing by. I ordered the Chicago dog lunch special with fries and a Dr. Pepper. It was around $8 and was hands down some of the best hot dogs I have ever eaten! I am surprised to read some of the mixed reviews. I've had excellent experiences on the several occasions I have picked up lunch from Sammy's. Unlike the photo posted in another review, the Italian Beef I got was huge. I bet it would have tipped the scale at a full pound or better had I tried to weigh it. Perfect juice to roll ratio and the beef was nice and tender. You can tell it is a higher quality beef. No fat or gristle at all. The Chicken Parm sandwich was excellent as well. Maybe a touch light on the marinara, but definitely met my expectations. The Gyro sandwich was close to the best gyro I've ever had. The fries are excellent. No second frying like another review mentioned. Fresh, hot, crispy, and salted just right. The small bag was easily equal to a large at other Chicago style grills. As for the down sides, there are a couple worth mentioning. At lunch time, they are usually slammed, so if you are in a hurry, this isn't the place for you, but the food makes the wait well worth it. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing the availability of some good hot giardiniera on the counter or in some small cups to go. Giardiniera is a Chicago food staple and having it available would have put my experience over the top. All in all, a great place to grab lunch. Big Sammy's is a place that will always have a place in my heart. I started going here when I was younger but it was at the Elk Grove Village locations because I'd visit some family and go with them or hit the spot up before I went to visit. I do also agree that a Chicago Dog needs to have that poppy seed bun but other than that I honestly don't have any major gripes with this place. Seating can definitely be better as well like some others have said but it'd a Hot Dog joint, what do you expect? For the price the 2 hot dog special is not bad at all. For 7.75 you get 2 hot dogs, fries and a drink. Now I know people think you should go here for the Hot Dogs but honestly give the Chicken Gyro a try. That is pretty much what got all my family including myself hooked onto this place. The chicken has good flavor, the pita is cooked perfectly, some lettuce (I usually remove some of the lettuce it can sometimes be too much), and a really good honey mustard sauce. I've had Chicken Gyros at other places and I have to say so far Big Sammy's in my opinion has the best. Also just an FYI I saw a couple days ago that they had something outside of the store of undergoing a process of possibly getting a liquor license? Maybe Big Sammy's is going to sell Beer and/or other types of liquor soon? Maybe I also was just food deprived and going crazy but I could of sworn I saw a sign that said it. So, I can ONLY comment on the hot dog's since that is all I had at Big Sammy's so, here it goes. They use cheap buns, generic bland pickle slices, not the freshest tomatoes, and the relish stinks. The pickles are sliced not quartered... The relish is non existent and not green.... there is no celery salt, with the exception of the sport peppers I would deem this NOT a Chicago hot dog, but then what's the point of going to the place.... The buns are just wrong... stale and no poppy seeds. So skip this place, even if it is convenient... Go to Portillo's, go to Paradise Pup, there are just too many good places that do a good job. I've came to this location ever since the doors have opened here. Great people behind the counter, sometimes even Sammy is there helping out. They got a great deal on hotdogs with a meal. I typically get a double cheeseburger with large fries. Do not ask for all the condiments because the burger can get very messy & they typically overdo them. I've only been here once, and it was pretty decent. I ordered the chicken gyros sandwich, which unfortunately, I wouldn't order again. I would have preferred my gyros to be a little more crispy, as it was too soft or undercooked for my liking. The portion was OK. There were tons of fries, and the fries are delicious! My friend ordered the regular gyros, and it was just okay. I also tasted the popcorn chicken which was excellent! I'd definitely order that if I was in the mood for fried chicken. I stopped in here for lunch when I didn't feel like fighting for parking at Panera. The service was great, and he was understanding with my questions (since I'd never been there before). I got their 2 hotdog special, and they were delicious. Normally when I get a bacon cheese dog, I feel slightly skimped on cheese. Here? The cheese was warm and gooey and I had to be careful not to spill it all over! The fries were crispy, nicely cooked. If anything, they needed a little salt - easily fixed with a packet of salt. My husband picked up an order that we placed through Uber. When he went to go pick it up Sammy - THE OWNER mind you, gave him an extremely difficult time over a $3 Pepsi. We ordered through the app and paid $44 and within that order was 3 Pepsis. Upon my husbands arrival the owner refused to give him all three and accused him of scamming him because their receipt was only charged $41.
